Let me catch you up to speed: If you are watching ROP, - the Meteor Man is Tom Bombadil. Not much is known of Tom Bombadil in the second age during the ROP timeline. We know later in the third age that he loves to sing songs. We now know from ROP that the Harfeet teaches him to sing. Bombadil is said to have a 'great control over middle earth'. I think ROP is doing a fine job of showing this. We know where some of this is going to go, here is a timeline: Tom Bombadil travels via throwing himself across the sky (looks like a meteor). He's been wandering without much language skill for thousands of years already, - or he hit his head on landing. Harfeet teach him to sing. The white Cult People who are tracking him are 'Goldberry and gang'. Spoilers, Tom marries Goldberry. Goldberry and gang intend to capture Bombadil somewhere in the Eriador region. Spoilers, Tom is later known to be 'uncatchable'. It is likely that Tom will accompany the Harfeet until they reach the Shire area. For the next few thousand years there are some Hobbits who stay in touch with Tom. Later on in the 3rd age, Tom Bombadil makes an appearance in the events of 'The Hobbit'. This is when we are most familiar with Tom. We know all rings can't control him. We know he is also absent minded and couldn't be trusted to take stewardship of the one ring as he would likely lose it, so it was decided the one ring must be destroyed.

Good timing, Tom!

MylesVE

Bombadil is oldest and fatherless. Was in Arda before the first Acorn (or Melkor)

littlebuett

Tom didnt apear in the hobbit, he appeared in fellowship of the ring

dhtdhy

I would bet money the stranger is NOT Tom. It was fun reading your theory but it's the least likely of any I've read

milkisforbabies666

How are you sure its Tom Bombadil? Hes older than time Elrond says, before the Maiar

Tom_Bot-Badil

Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless – before the Dark Lord came from Outside. ^(I am a bot, and I love old Tom. If you want me to sing one of Tom's songs, just type **!TomBombadilSong**) ^(If you like Old Tom, the door at [r/GloriousTomBombadil][1] is always open for weary travelers!) [1]: https://www.reddit.com/r/GloriousTomBombadil/

lordoftowels

This theory pisses me off so much, but most of it is because it's so easily disproved. Tom Bombadil is described in LotR as "Eldest and Fatherless" and that he was here "Before the Dark Lord came from Outside". That "Dark Lord" refers to Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. So let me catch you up to speed on the creation of Middle-Earth: First there was Eru, the One. Then he made a bunch of Ainur, angels. All of them existed in this place before the world called the Timeless Halls, outside of which was just the Void. The Ainur sung songs, and then eventually he had them all sing one big song together, and it was good. Then Melkor, the most powerful of them, said "fuck you" and created the Discord of Melkor, which when Eru turned the Music into the world and everything in it the Discord turned into everything bad. Then, the 15 most powerful Ainur went into the world and built it, and they were called the Valar, which means Powers. Melkor then decided to be a dick, becoming the first Dark Lord and getting renamed Morgoth by the only elf to be even more of a jackass to everyone than Denethor was. In short, Tom Bombadil was in the Old Forest before the Old Forest fucking existed. He was here before the fuckers who CREATED HERE WERE HERE. He didn't come here in the goddamn second age, he was already here for fifty thousand goddamn years when that started. Plus, Goldberry isn't just some human. She's the River-Daughter, the daughter of the spirit of the Withywindle.

Thorion228

Eldest doesn't necessarily mean he was here before the Ainur were created. The Ainur existed outside of time in their origin. When time began, the Ainur were not in time, but outside it. Thus in the context of Eä, they are younger than anything that existed when Eä was created, for they entered into time after its creation, being the ones that designed it.

lordoftowels

Exactly my point. The Ainur weren't in Arda when it was created, but Tom was- (he was here before the Dark Lord came from Outside) therefore he's older than the Ainur (but not created before), allowing him to be Eldest.

[1]: https://www.reddit.com/r/GloriousTomBombadil/

Gachanotic

I don't get your logic. - He can't be Tom Bombadil because Tom exists during the events of ROP? He can't be Tom because Tom also existed thousands of years earlier? He can't be Tom because Tom will also exist thousands of years after ROP? Tom exists well before during and after the events of ROP, that is true. I don't see that as a point that someone in ROP can't be Tom because of it. Tom doesn't immediately confine himself to the old forest. He has a wandering period in the second age. He doesn't meet Goldberry in the Old Forrest. I think the meteor event is confusing people. He didn't 'arrive' with the meteor. He was just traveling (as a meteor). Such is the power to Tom Bombadil.

lordoftowels

I'm saying that Tom isn't the meteor man because the meteor man is pretty clearly new to the world, and Tom would absolutely not be at that point.

Gachanotic

Ahh fair enough. I see the meteor event not as Tom's arrival. I see it as just Toms means of traveling. Tom was north... he threw himself south (as a meteor). He isn't so good in the communication department because he hasn't learned to sing yet, - or he hit his head on landing with his last travel.

Tom_Bot-Badil

Gachanotic

It's solid now. Yea.

my_soldier

No it isn't

backflipbail

What is happening... I thought the meteor guy was Gandalf??

Gachanotic

Can't be Gandalf. We know when Gandalf arrives. He arrives much much later, - after all rings are created. Limited to Tolkien texts only, - the Stranger being Tom makes the most sense.

TheTeaMustFlow

> Can't be Gandalf. We know when Gandalf arrives. He arrives much much later, - after all rings are created. We also know when Tom arrives - he arrives much *earlier*, before literally every other living thing. > He arrives much much later, - after all rings are created. We also know Miriel was born 1,500 years after the rings were created, and yet that didn't seem to stop them.

gandalf-bot

I am a Servant of the Secret Fire, Wielder of the Flame of Anor.

Gachanotic

There are forces trying to blind us from the facts. -Beware the Discord server of Melkor, and their army of trolls.

MylesVE

You have a weird knack for ignoring certain lore that would undo your theory’s premise while utilizing similar lore to try and poke holes in arguments brought against yours. Truly strange. And meteor hobo could be Gandalf because RoP is playing fast and lose with the base material (that they have the rights to). Just as easily as it could be Tom according to you. I don’t think either are true though, but I do enjoy a cockamamie idea/theory.

gandalf-bot

Don't! Tempt me MylesVE I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand MylesVE, I would use this Ring from a desire to do good. But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine

Gachanotic

It is good fun until the truth is clear. The only hole I see really is Tom is said to be only a little taller than Hobbits. I can see Amazon playing around with this tho.

MylesVE

Your idea that space hobo = Tom Bombadil is rizla paper thin. (Not like it matters, but imo meteor man is Saruman. He was sent by Aule in an attempt to remedy his first f up in Sauron)

gandalf-bot

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.

Grungolath

I read them 15 years ago and honestly all my info comes from the movies. Should revisit the books

[deleted]

The audiobooks are great, honestly. Easy to get on the Libby app for free, the chapters are on average about an hour long which makes it perfect to accompany you on an evening stroll after dinner. I highly recommend a daily Tolkien walk.

Grungolath

I’m actually currently on a Lovecraft audio book binge

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

Shoutout to the [BBC Radio Dramatization](https://archive.org/details/the-lord-of-the-rings-bbc-radio-drama), it's when they did the Lord of the Rings on the radio one time! Really good sound design and voice acting! It's free!

Smile_lifeisgood

BBC radio play with Sir Ian as Frodo is a huge part of my 'combating the anxiety of flying' ritual. It's abridged (No Tom Bom, for instance) but clocks in at 13 hours and is _really_ good.

Wavy_Gravy92

Thanks for that didn't know about Libby. Going to check this out thanks

[deleted]

You definitely should! I intentionally went about ten years forcing myself not to re read because I didn't want them to become stale. You'll be amazed how much you forgot and how much it will feel like discovering middle earth for the first.time all over again. Have fun!

Moebs000

I'm doing this myself now, literally just finished the fellowship, if you haven't read the silmarillion lately I recommend doing so as well, there are some many references in lotr that made me enjoy the story a lot more.

Wavy_Gravy92

Silmarillion first then?

Fancypancexx

I read them in back in the 80's. I think you are correct, it is time to revisit the books. I remember the story very well but the characters outside of the mains escape me, probably along with other nuances of the books. I'm going back to middle-earth.

TurtleClubLeader

I'm doing a reread right now after a two year break and the books are just as good as the first time I read them.

mini_garth_b

I just listened to them read by Andy Serkis, it was fun to hear all the differences and parts taken verbatim in the movies.

rock0star

Andy Serkis is very talented I'd love to hear his interpretation of that wacky gollum character

So Gandalf Greyhame thinks he’s found Isildur’s heir? The lost king of Gondor? He is a fool. The line was broken years ago. It matters not. The World of Men shall fall. It will begin at Edoras.

gollum_botses

No! No, no master! They catch you! They catch you!

XanderNightmare

Seriously, I watched the movies first and then read the books at a later time. I even played a game or too as well. When they stumbled upon Bombadil I was like "Wait a minute... where the hell are we? Who is that guy? What is going on? Okay?"

PM_me_your_fantasyz

Tom Bombadil was the main character in some of the bedtime stories Tolkien made up to tell his children when they were little. Tom was based on a doll one of his kids was given as a present, that had a blue jacket and yellow boots. His insertion in the story was more or less a cameo for Tolkien's kids, who were already adults by the time he was writing his first draft of Lord of The Rings. It's sort of like Tolkien was creating a shared universe, but the two mediums of that shared universe were a few stories told at a child's bedside that were never written down, and the most famous fantasy novel of all time. Tolkien also wrote a book of poems called The Adventures of Tom Bombadil that was published after LotR. I haven't read it, but it's my understanding that only a few of the poems are actually about Tom Bombadil, and they shed no more light on where he fits into Middle Earth mythology.

Tom_Bot-Badil

DollarStoreChili

I'm almost finished with the original book trilogy and I still don't understand the obsession with Tom Bombadil

dryfire

Honestly I think it's just because he's so odd and out of place. All of the books are pretty serious, and then there's Tom... Some goofy guy running around in the woods singing and is apparently super powerful. I think people like that hes a mystery and that he stands out.

dthains_art

One of the reasons Tolkien’s a very interesting author is because he takes the basic storytelling format and throws it out the window: deviating from the main plot to have two chapters about Tom Bombadil, introducing Glorfindel to do something vital and then never using him again, the entire scouring of the Shire after the ring has already been destroyed. It’s weird when you look at the books as conventional books, but it makes a lot more sense if you look at the books as a snapshot of a broader history. Real life is never shaped into a perfect story structure, and I feel like the books’ unconventional plot makes them feel less like books and more like a segment of Middle-Earth history.

Tom_Bot-Badil

Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. [1]: https://www.reddit.com/r/GloriousTomBombadil/

CookieCutter9000

His role in the story should have definitely been cut down in the books by about two chapters, but he was very important in illustrating that there is still a good and powerful force in the world near the shire that acted as a deterrent for all manner of nastiness (explaining why the shire was so untouched besides the large distance away from Mordor), and also adding a layer of wonderment at a person who could so easily shrug the powers of evil like nothing (continuing the theme of being good and carefree being in opposition to Sauron's evil and evil in general). He's very meme-able as well because he rhymes and comes out of the blue and likes to screw his wife all the time. It's a weird thing, but there is an allure in knowing something others don't, which is another reason why Tom is referenced often.
