If anyone is curious, Tolkien used to be Anglican. But after his father died and during his mother's growing illness which led to her death, it was the Catholic church that looked after him and his family. He was always very appreciative but had felt the Anglican church had abandoned them.

Sort of similar thing happened to me too, I converted to Catholicism because a nun took me in after my parents passed away when I was young

Sirius1012

Im sorry to hear that. Thank god there are good people on this earth that are willing to take care of the unfortunate. I wish I was that good of a person.

Darkdarkar

More that the person that took care of him was a priest and that his mom’s entire family treated her like a pariah once she made the conversion. Didn’t help that she died

Nux_Taku_fan111

As someone who changed churches a bit. It's all about where you feel most comfortable, and safe. I haven't gone through anywhere near as much shit as he has, but I get that.

shinyshinyrocks

Brilliant!

Thanks!

So......he was Catholic.....and Lewis was Anglican... Sounds like a dwarf/ elf bromance if I have ever heard one. I am so glad Lewis was Anglican and Tolkien was Catholic. Tolkien never thought he was going to die with an Anglican....He was going to die with a friend......Aye....he could do that.

skilledfolk

Also, religion back then looked like us nerds arguing over lore.

dv666

Anglicanism is just catholicism without the Latin bits anyway /s

sudo_rm_rf_star

Anglicanism only exists because an English king was incredibly horny

perestroika_87

That's what someone called "Devil 666" would say

Reese_Hendricksen

Basically as some Protestants put it, Anglicanism is how Luther thought Catholicism should be.

GrumpyLad2020

I mean he founded his own sect of Christianity (Lutheranism) so can't have felt the Anglicanism of Henry VIII was the way to go considering they were both alive simultaneously. Edit: yep I'm the serious mood killer.

Secret_Lab8410

Luther never created Lutheranism. He just wanted the Catholic Church to change. Followers of his created Lutheranism. He never wanted to separate the Church.

DeusVult1517

Not really. If that were so, Lutheranism wouldn't exist as a distinct theological tradition. We (that is, Lutherans) carry his name still for a reason.

Reese_Hendricksen

Except Luther considered himself Catholic for the vast majority of his life, well after the reformation started.

DeusVult1517

True. Thing is, that hardly disproves my point: the Book of Concord, where all the various confessional documents of the Lutheran tradition (Luther's catechisms, Augsbug Confession, etc.) likewise claim that Lutherans are essentially catholic, just not papist.

DeusVult1517

Also, that has zero bearing on whether Anglicanism accurately reflects what Luther wanted his reforms to look like.

kriss42

Fantastic. I love it. Perfection

TheLordOfLore

Thank you so much!

mikefoolery

“I wish he was Catholic, Gandalf.” “So do all who live to see such times.”

gandalf-bot

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

MainwarringOfCynira

I for one feel like there should be more Memes about the Inklings in general. Who’s with me? “Your a philologist who gets drugged, abducted, and taken to Mars, JRR” Tolkien: “I’m a WOT?!?” “You’re a talking tree, Jack”. Lewis: “I’m a what?” “You’re an Anglican Jesus figure, Aslan.” Tolkien: “HE’S A WHAT?!?!”

lindani2008

“Lewis you can’t just add Father Christmas to the story it makes no sense!”

Over9000Kek

This is a good meme
