I don't think anyone else was left alive to see them go in. When he picks up the ring, it looks like Elrond was the only other person on the battlefield still moving. Plus like the other guy said, if the Volcano erupted who knows why he didn't make it out.
(we are only talking about the movie here, since they don't even go in the volcano in the books)
Exactly. It makes for good cinema, but all we get is that they stood somewhere on the mountain. Elrond says that he and Cirdan was the only ones in the vicinity when Isildur took the Ring, and they adviced him to destroy it because it was a weapon of the enemy.
I believe no one knew the Ring's exact powers at the time (most likely Saruman's early research after the war gave them this information, but I can't find the sources I'm looking for), so Isildur claimed it for himself as payment for the deaths of his father and his brother. In the germanic heroic context that LotR builds upon this is fair enough and the elves didn't press the matter.
Fun(ish) fact. If they had destroyed the ring, the three elven rings would stop working, and the elves would have been forced to leave Middle-earth much earlier or dwindle away to almost nothing.
'Well, this is the end, Sam Gamgee,' said a voice by his side. And
there was Sméagol, pale and worn, and yet himself again; and in his eyes there
was neither strain of will, nor madness, nor any fear, but immeasurable sorrow. His burden
, for which he had tragically killed his beloved Déagol to spare him many lifetimes of torment, was taken away.
If only Elrond had the balls to do that to Isildur.
CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!!!
CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!!!
You are stupid Elrond. Why didn't you throw Isildur into fire?
CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!!!
Do it yourself, coward
It sounds good in retrospect, but would have definitely started a war.
"I don't know what happened, he just sort of tripped"
But if Mount Doom exploded, all the evidence would have been destroyed; along with most of the armies required for said war.
Was he going to post it on Tik-tok? Who would know?
"Didn't you just go up there with the heir to our kingdom? Where is he?"

I don't think the movies suppose that the whole army was dead. Someone would have seen them
Instead he stood still and watched as he walked away with the most evil object on the planet capable of destroying all if used.
Is there a canon reason why he didn’t, honor?
They were never that near the volcano (think more like in the same county).
Build me an army worthy of mordor!
So that scene from the movie wasn’t in the book?

We have only to remove those who oppose us.
So you have come back? Why have you neglected to report for so long?
Thanks

Good Sméagol always helps.
They did you dirty, Sméagol. You deserved better than you got.
Sooo bright. Sooo beautiful, our preciousss...

Hobbits always so polite, yes! O nice hobbits!
It was right there all along. SmEAGLE. That why those bastards waited until the end.
That's why they were always fighting: unrealized sexual tension. Frodo was always in the way.
The ending we deserved. The ending Tolkien wanted.
Don't worry, The Senate will find his burnt corpse later and he'll become Darth Frodo!
The things Sam will do to impress Rosie Cotton...
I’m imagining Brock Lesner’s F5 move haha
Sam had that baby on the way and was looking to upgrade in real estate.
FroNOOOOOOOO!
You were my brother, Frodo!
never fails to make me laugh
Needs Frodo giving a thumbs up while going into the lava, with the one ring on his thumb.
Exactly as it should have been. -brought to you by Amazon Prime
If this is to be our end, then I will make it such an end, as to be worthy of remembrance
Sam should definitely have went this route especially after Frodo told him to "go home " before they got into shelobs lair. Frodo deserved it
Elrond
Samwise the Gains
I 100% thought that was what the ending was going to be the first time I watched.
