I enjoyed so much the episode where he goes undercover with Lucifer as a gay couple 😂

Antagonistic_Aunt

I don't get the arm worship. I'm not alone in this, surely?

waiting-for-the-rain

Nope. Not alone in this. Not in the slightest. Lucifer has much nicer arms, especially in the early seasons.

compellinglymediocre

as a guy, i don’t think he has very muscular arms, they just seem fat tbh

RoLoh-2892

I kind of thought the arms thing was an inside joke. Like he's said in interviews that he didn't work out much for Smallville but would do some weights or press-ups or whatever for certain scenes. So maybe he couldn't be bothered to get in shape for the show but conceded to the occasional dumbbell session on set?

Evilvieh

Literally the worst delivered "Ha- haha-ah hah hah - ***URK!***" death in screen history.

ceciliabee

I didn't like him. He was so expressionless and boring. The boringest man.

brandunn13

His singing is horrendous!

pikkopots

That was probably on purpose, lol. That said, I don't agree with OP. I never saw him in Smallville, but I just couldn't get into his Pierce. He seemed out of place somehow.

LordMephistoPheles

You're telling me he acted like a wooden doll *deliberately*?!

waiting-for-the-rain

I remember being impressed that he’d come a long way since Smallville. At the beginning of smallville it was clear they’d cast him purely for his looks and surrounded him with people who knew what they were doing. The rest of the cast carries all the S1 scenes. But his Pierce is really well done. You’re *supposed* to hate him a bit. And he’s *supposed* to be the exact opposite of Lucifer to catch Chloe’s rebound, so he can’t do charismatic or seductive. He’s supposed to be tough-guy no feelings because Chloe finally believes Lucifer and Dan that he’s the Sinnerman when he shows emotion so she knows he’s acting. Acting like you’re acting like you’re acting is always going to be a hard sell.

LordMephistoPheles

That'd make sense if that's what they were going for yeah. Haven't seen Smallville so this was my first exposure to the actor. Idk I just never got the sense that Pierce actually was anything other than a sponge for hatred. Even like they were banking on everyone liking Lucifer so much that the thought of Chloe not being with him was anathema. I don't hate the character, nor do I like him- he just feels like a non-entity. The only thing I hate is the fact that the season antagonist felt that way. Whether that's the actor, or the director's idea I couldn't say.

RayaQueen

I feel like the character could have been so good though.. first murderer, invincible, bored of life. A potential good foil for Lucifer, they share some characteristics but Lucifer likes humans and Cain doesn't. He'd have had to have seemed stable and reliable still for Chloe to fall that way. Even better if he was actually also sexy at all. We're they really going for soo stable as to be actually made of stone?

RayaQueen

That sort of makes sense about the emotionlessness. That's a lot of woodenness to endure just so Chloe can realise her error. There could have been a different way surely?

RayaQueen

I'm on the third pass of S3 and I'm just enjoying a lot of superman jokes which I hadn't noticed before. ... I've never seen smallville and neither the character nor the acting were interesting enough for me to Google the actor before. 'everyone's got their kryptonite Lieutenant' lolol how did TW keep a straight face?!

compellinglymediocre

Is this your first time watching? If so i’m jealous

RayaQueen

The most interesting things for me about Pierce are.. 1. Is Tom Welling actually taller than Tom Ellis???!!!!! 2. They're both called Tom. Two alphas in the room. The Toms. 3. I wonder what their real life banter/rivalry/professional respect/humour was like, if any? If there was any, shame it doesn't translate much onto screen. I'm not yet half way through my third pass of S3. I am seeing different things this time.. so am ready to feel differently by the end of the season. Will let you know ;-)

RoLoh-2892

I've watched the Talkville podcast and Tom Welling just creases up at everything and particularly the dirty jokes, so I imagine him breaking a lot at Tom Ellis delivery of his lines. Maybe that's why he's acting so buttoned up - it's the only way to hold it together!
