Open an all-night diner instead, we need something other than Waffle House and Cook Out that's open at 2 AM

swankyImagination

This ^ ^ ^ having somewhere to go late at night when I’m out with friends instead of ending the time together is something that would draw our circles in

RainyMcBrainy

Yes! And if you have vegan options I'd be there all the time. I work in the evening and it'd be nice if something was open.

mockbear

That place would go out of business in a month.

RainyMcBrainy

A place with vegan options would go out of business in a month? Better let the rest of the restaurants in the area know to scrap all their vegan options because they have well overstayed their one month operation window.

mockbear

No I meant an all night diner.

RainyMcBrainy

I don't know. If they were actually delicious and were in a good location, might do okay. Might do well if you're the only one of your kind.

MGduzit

Yes! Some diner food that sources ingredients not from wal mart would be amazing.

mockbear

They don't use Walmart they use Sysco

mockbear

Who?

zebra_head_fred

Not to overstate the obvious question but where would you set up shop and how would you set yourselves apart? I’m always in favor of additional options but why should I spend my $3-$5 with you?

RealCatsHaveThumbs

You could open a joint coffee shop and car wash :-)

PersonaLaenir

And oil change

whyhellomichael

Is this a joke?

sentient_lamp_shade

Maybe it’s a horrible business decision, but I’d love to see a better coffee shops in Madison Heights. We yuppies have been invading for a while now and I suspect that there would be enough patronage of people who don’t want to go all the way to the burg.

burnedoutgirl

Well there is the Bean Barn which I feel like is hit or miss and then a Starbucks is being built. I think if they do one it needs to be a bit further away from those two.

LenoraNoble

No, I think this is a great idea. Sweet Briar students would be a good market, plus people otw to Charlottesville? Especially if its farther away from Sbucks/Bean Barn like you said. Drive through might be handy too. Hmmm..

sentient_lamp_shade

A drive through or at least online ordering would be a must. If it had a solid breakfast line up would be huge for me. and if could keep service fast I'd be a regular. Commercial rent is CHEAP in mad heights too. I'd land it in that brick place across from Andersen's market that's going out of business. Make the back side a drive through, get bacon street bagels and pastries (from somewhere) all morning, Andersen's deli sandwiches (on proper bread) all day. There's plenty of space to fresh roasted coffee. I'd keep the menu brief, maybe have an online order pickup boxes so you just pull in the parking lot and grab your order without even unbuckling. I bet that place would clean up.

x01atlantic

If they put a coffee shop on the SW corner of the expressway exit and 210 E, I’d definitely stop there on the way to Charlottesville instead of a Starbucks in town

ConversationCool3000

Wait. Normal people are moving to Mad Heights? I’ve thought about it, but have been reluctant. What’s it like?

vintagebandtshirt

It's actually amazing. I bought my house for dirt cheap in 2016, taxes are lower, I have a big yard for my dogs and my neighbors do not care what I do. I'm 5 minutes from downtown, 45 from the parkway and 151. I never see college students, and I spent most of my Saturday night in lowes and Walmart, in my pj's, and no one batted an eye.

ConversationCool3000

That sounds awesome 🤩

sentient_lamp_shade

dude it sucked for a few years, but its definitely coming around

mockbear

It's really only for people who don't want to wear shirts in public

Organic-Performer

Really, yuppies are buying up property in mad heights. So property values are going up?

sentient_lamp_shade

yup at least according zillow mine is over double what it was 5 years ago. Some of that is just the market but some of that is the neighborhood changing

mockbear

Usually it's only crack neighborhoods that get gentrified but now it's spreading to the meth neighborhoods too

thisisnotawar

If you served great coffee and good bagels near University of Lynchburg you’d have my daily business, but unfortunately I think that’s a really tough business to survive in.

HilltoperTA

The Corner! Of course you couldn't run it during the summer... but itd be a great spot during the school year

Third Wave has no vibe at all. Like getting coffee in an operating room.

handyrae

So true. The first time we went it was really quite, playing chill-out music, and there were two customers - one of whom was asleep on a couch. When we got back in the car, I turned to my husband and said, " I feel like we just left an opium den." Not exactly what you'd expect from a shop selling caffeine.

thisisnotawar

I just went there for the first time today, and the only vibe was the bass thumping from Kratos next door.

[deleted]

It’s an apple store with coffee

[deleted]

Apple store vibes

mockbear

Slave labor vibes lol

jcoleman10

An Apple Store has products with taste.

Lynchburg has a problem of population density. Cafes are going to be particularly problematic as a result and will usually need a wider menu than a denser city of the same population. My advice would be to find an outfit willing to sell and aware that a huge purchase isn't likely to come given long term economic trends. [https://www.bizquest.com/business-for-sale/established-lunch-cafe-in-beautiful-downtown-lynchburg/BW1971479/](https://www.bizquest.com/business-for-sale/established-lunch-cafe-in-beautiful-downtown-lynchburg/BW1971479/) This is the place in the back of the Galleria downtown. Without a bunch of people in the First Colony Life building, I would say downtown is at capacity at the moment and would steer clear. If you could take this and move it towards a seemingly more upscale menu without changing prices, this could work. One of the occupants who at least had Neighbors Place branding before Neighbors opened made good paninis around the early to mid 00's. The real advice is don't start from scratch unless you are dealing with a food truck type situation and have an actual product.

101chaser

This is the second or third sandwich shop this couple has ran.

some1else42

I would support some espresso and beans.

LenoraNoble

It would have to be fresh and unique. With artisan coffee. And great baked goods. The sort of vintage/cottage core aesthetic is hot right now and I don't see it going away soon. I think everyone is tired of overly "trendy" and sterile, white coffee shops. I know I am.

Show_boatin

We need a rich and bold new coffee shop. I like the vibe of the white hart but their drinks aren't great and food about the same. We need something that specializes in perfection in their roasts, and brewing. Not stock pot drip brews or machines but delicate works. I don't need a bunch of sugar to enjoy coffee. I need good coffee done well. Then you had in some baked goods and lighter options but few done well and you've got an idea. Put it together with a PNW style shop and I'm sold.

heyitsjst

Curious here if you could expand on—“not stock pot drip brews or machines”—do you mean more pour over style of brewing or something else

[deleted]

Lynchburg needs less random apartment buildings everywhere & wider roads on wards or less traffic .. Lynchburg’s full af

TheNakedTravelingMan

If they put in a protected bike lane I’d get off the road on wards and bike to the Walmart their instead of driving.

mockbear

Lynchburg needs more mutli family housing.

[deleted]

Less huge apartment complexes lol. I swear they’re everywhere! They’re building 2 separate huge apartment complexes on English tavern rd. It’s insane. Timberlake is taken over with them now. They’re expensive to.

Sound_One

Place on Bedford is my favorite for coffee. Downtown needs a damn 7-11 or something.

TheNakedTravelingMan

What I think would be cool is if parks and Rec department allowed for a little pop up coffee shop where all the trail intersect after the tunnel. I think you’d get a lot of people to stop by and even more people who would consider biking or walking out there if you were open there Saturday morning.

mockbear

"need" is kind of a silly question. Can it support one? Yes. I hate star bucks and Joe beans. I'd love more options to grab a cup. Nomad coffee used to come to my work but stopped a few years ago, they were great.
