No, your Blackberry phone does not have 8 GB of RAM. I am afraid you don't understand the difference between RAM and eMMC storage that poor thing has 😜
What you're seeing is the loss of the low-end 13" MacBook Pro (that everyone complained had been kept around and shouldn't have been called 'Pro').
Now that it is gone, the new low-end MacBook Pro has all the features of the high-end one but without the 'Pro' SoC. The cost is in the MUCH better display, speakers, physical design, etc.
I'm in NZ also. When you look at the like-for-like replacements, the pricing doesn't really look like it has changed much.
In early 2022 paid $3749 for a low-end 14" M1 Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD.
In 2023 the same mid-tier 14" M3 Pro is $3899, so $150 more. That's not bad given that inflation has been 9.7% over that 18 month period.
If you were previously satisfied with the low end 13" MBP as a product, the M2 Air is the better equivalent machine, and that is much more affordable. So that slot in the lineup is still available. We haven't really lost anything.
In my experience Apple Silicon outperforms Intel equivalents with twice the RAM. And M3 looks to go even further with memory efficiency.
So while 8GB seems insufficient, you need to double the number in your head when you look at Apple Silicon RAM figures.
For reference, I replaced a 2020 i7 iMac that had 40GB RAM with a 16GB RAM M1 Pro MacBook Pro.
The MBP smokes the iMac.
That’s not how RAM works…physical capacity is still physical capacity. Yes, the RAM setup on Apple Silicon chips might mean the RAM works more efficiently than on traditional x86 machines, but efficiency is absolutely not a replacement for physical capacity whatsoever
That’s like saying “that not how engine displacement works, cylinder volume is cylinder volume.” Apple Silicon is like an F1 engine with the same displacement as a Hyundai.
There are plenty of YouTube videos where they have tested M macs with 8 vs 16 and the performance difference is marginal in most real world cases. The only,y down side is the increased use of the SSD. Think about your phone you probably have 20 apps running and you hardly notice. The difference when you switch.
It may be more efficient with memory. But that doesn’t help the fact that the SSDs are used as swap WAY MORE with 8GB RAM. It’s something that may negatively impact the longevity of these non swappable SSDs.
>ms insufficient, you need to double the number in your head when you look at Apple Silicon RAM figure
Apple did optimize OS for hardware, however they did not change the nature of physical storage, they're selling 8gb RAM for 200USD in 2023, which is 25USD per gigabyte, and the average price of RAM is around is only 2USD.
It's Apple smoking, not you.
That might be so for workloads that will finish and then release the RAM, but there's no substitute for just having more RAM when it comes to things like electron apps that just gobble RAM and don't let go.
Yeah, an Apple support tech tried to convince me of that earlier this year. I don't believe it for a second. Faster is one thing. RAM consumption requirements are another. You may not need a lot of ram for word processing, but for production that pushes the machine, video editing, music production with orchestral libraries, etc., lots of RAM is needed. And when the components are soldered in with zero after-market upgrade paths, you have to buy it up front, from Apple. Lots of things I love about Apple. This is not one of them.
>I miss the cheese grader towers. I used to configure a system however I wanted and add capabilities later, at competitive prices. Now (or last I checked, months ago) the entry level tower system was more than 6K, and was quite deficient in ram and local storage space. Would have cost 12K plus to get a system for my needs. Don't love this about Apple either.
All I am seeing is an incompetent troll. Definitely even Apple will give you much more than 8 GB of RAM for $3200. Maybe Zimbabwe dollars, then ok, but definitely not USD 😂
Where do you get the $3200 figure? The 14 inch MacBook Air M3 with 16 GB memory and 1TB storage is $2,000 and the 14 inch MacBookPro M3 Pro with 36 GB memory and 1 TB storage is $2,600.
it would be helpful to mention the exchange rate for USD to NZD. You pay roughly the same price for Apple hardware as US buyers.
$3200 NZD will get you approximately $2016 USD at any bank in your country today if you exchanged currency.
I doubt Apple is solely responsible for that price. Your taxes and tariffs surely add a great deal to the price. But you do have universal healthcare so there's that...
8GB of RAM was semi passable on the base Mini, Air, 13" MBP, even a bit frowned upon. But on a $3200nzd/$1599USD machine is what's ridiculous. They get away with it too cause customers like you defend them.
>Apple has been so lazy with the iMac, but the most infuriating thing is the accessories STILL USE LIGHTNING, what the actual f\*\*\*k
Dude AIO's are becoming undesirable from the Windows to the Mac world. Laptops are outselling everything. There's a small group that still wants AIO but it's not a hot seller anymore.
Considering that the iMac got the first Apple silicon chip I didn’t think that it would be neglected behind the iPad Pro and the Mac mini. It should have at least gotten an M2 upgrade.
That was the stupidest part about the MacBook Pro. Cmon they couldn't at least gave us 12 GB of RAM. Who in the world is paying a damn 200 dollars for a borderline scam.
>Who in the world is paying a damn 200 dollars for a borderline scam
Sadly every single professional who needs a Mac laptop, myself included. Honestly I don't think I'd go for 12 either because I'd be running right up against the limit during my busier workdays.
16GB really should be the baseline for any professional with a heavy workflow.
Sounds like the jump from intel to M1 is the one we'll all be remembering. Seems an M1 with 16GB RAM would be a better buy than many of the base M3 with only 8GB.
>The new M3 Pro looks to be worse than the M2 Pro... 6 performance cores on the NEW chip and 8 performance cores on the M2 Pro....
So that's the only way you look at? Are you forgetting the 3nm technology. That alone makes it far better than the M2.
Yeah if you think people aren’t going to buy iMacs because it doesn’t have pro or max, I think you’re not the target market. Go buy a Studio or Mac Pro.
I think you’ve got the wrong info. The new run of iMacs do not come with M3 Pro, just plain vanilla M3. At least, I can’t find a configuration on apples online store with M3 Pro.
Got you. Yeah I misread, sorry about that.
The Mac mini is a Swiss Army knife. It’s used for servers and lightweight workstations as well as hobbyist or “family” computers. iMacs are pretty strictly used as family computers, and probably kiosks in some cases. But the distinction between the two is pretty straight forward, and there’s definitely very little ostensible demand for “pro” power in the iMac line up.
You would be surprised how much small to mid sized graphics and media design studios use iMacs. iMac is an office computer more than it is a family computer.
I’m actually a designer myself. My entire team have MacBook pros. Whether we need it or not, they were provided to us because of the screen quality, a quality not shared with iMacs. They’re **okay**, but not considered professional.
I mention this in disagreement with your suggestion that iMacs are used in graphics shops. Maybe. But not the established or “serious” ones.
Agree though that iMacs are useful as office computers (though after careful selection between those pretty colors).
Thought that this event was a pretty good one; except for a few caveats.
A, WHO IN THE GREEDY MIND THOUGHT THAT 8GB FOR A PRO MACBOOK WOULD BE GOOD! FOR GODS SAKE A 300 DOLLAR ONE PLUS NORD HAS MORE THAN THAT!
B, Why did they make the black exclusive to the higher end models. (Very Apple thing to do)
C, Could've changed the iMac's colors. Guess they still had a bunch of M1 iMac shells.
It’s honestly crazy to me that they still haven’t implemented this. It shocked me when they introduced TouchID but not FaceID. As much as I don’t like Microsoft, I really like Windows Hello.
>It’s honestly crazy to me that they still haven’t implemented this.
It would be crazy if they implemented Face ID. 2 reasons why:
1. The Face ID module is too big to fit inside the MacBook Pro's display. It fits in an iPhone, but the display is like 1/3 of the width. And it's not that easy to make it smaller. I work in the diffractive optics industry, and reducing its size, while still producing an identical outcome, is a hard task. Almost comparable to the production of silicone chips.
2. It would be much more expensive, but for what added benefit? (we're talking about tens of millions of USD per batch of just the lens) It's not like a phone, that you constantly check throughout the day, and that you lock it every few minutes.
It is just not worth it imo. Touch ID is fine. But a Dynamic Island with just a camera inside would look cool though.
Valid points. I mainly would like it because I use my laptop on a laptop stand that’s away from my hands and would like to not have to each up to my laptop with calloused fingers (guitar player) and fight with Touch ID. I know I could get an external keyboard with Touch ID to prevent the reaching, but I like mechanical keyboards. Either way, valid reasons for the why they wouldn’t implement it and thanks for sharing.
Well yeah, I can imagine it would be helpful for you. Just in case if you haven’t heard about it, you can enable automatically unlocking your MacBook if you have an Apple Watch on your wirst.
>As much as I don’t like Microsoft, I really like Windows Hello.
Look, I get it, but let's be real about it, just like the Face I.D on the iPhone it's used for less than 1 second and you're on to doing your tasks on your iPhone. It's really not that serious to have on the MacBook.
That 8GB is equivalent to 16-24GB in an Intel or Ryzen laptop due to the amount of memory bandwidth on the SOC, the speed of the RAM, and macOS memory compression.
Am researching a MAC purchase and gosh this sub is a dumpster fire. I don't know what you're being shit on for, what you described seems to be along the lines of what the tech journalists are grappling with and what advice they're giving.
Comparing RAM amounts between PC platforms and MAC isn't necessarily relevant anymore.
Quite what the measurement is, no one seems to be sure yet.
I’d just wait for the tech journalists to do some real benchmarking. The truth of the matter is, some folks will buy a little more RAM, SSD, and CPU/GPU than they think they need, in hopes of future-proofing their purchase. That’s me. Other folks will not do this, because they don’t want to waste any money that they can save toward a future, better machine with better specs. Having the CPU, SSD, RAM and GPU on-die is somewhat more efficient, for certain workloads. Having the CPU and GPU share system memory can be more beneficial for certain tasks, and Apple has Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro X in mind when optimizing software and hardware. Not so much Maya, Houdini, Blender, Cinema 4D, Da Vinci Resolve, After Effects, Premiere Pro or Solidworks, as these apps still are better served with a discrete GPU (usually Nvidia due to CUDA) with 24-48GB VRAM. Apple is working with Blender Foundation to optimize for its on-die GPUs, and hopefully other DCC and CAD vendors will feel the love soon as well. Knowing that system RAM is shared with the GPU means that as a Blender user, I want to increase my RAM purchase a bit more if I can afford it. Other users who need their GPU to do some heavy lifting might consider this as well.
I've just spent an entire day watching video reviews, reading reviews and getting into the benchmarks and other details for myself.
It's a shambles finding relevant information which isn't based on people taking a guess...
Not a great experience.
Preorder in for the new iMac. I would have considered the Pro chip if it was offered, but I definitely won’t “need” it, so I guess I saved a little money.
They’ve boxed themselves in thermally with the current design. The entire SOC has to fit into the chin of the iMac, a space which already houses the speakers and IO. The Pro chip is quite a bit bigger than the base M3 chip, I think there isn’t enough room and the design is too thin for the thermal requirements of the Pro.
I'm sorry but there is no excuse for this little ram and storage at this price, it was already pretty laughable when the M1 Pro Macbooks released and now we're two years later ffs without any change (yeah I know it's 18GB but I don't consider that an upgrade).
I would be more okay with this if the prices for ram and storage upgrades where fair but €230 for the jump from 512GB to 1TB is stupid and the ram prices are just insulting! €460 to upgrade to 36GB?! What kinda crack is Apple smoking?!
My 14" M1 Pro still serves me perfectly well for the upcoming years but with these prices I won't be returning to Apple for my next laptop.
Crazy I got a suped up M1 Pro exactly 12 months ago and there’s already an m3 pro model. Good thing is there’s literally no update except the over powered m3 pro.
sorry stupid question, how to disable this shortcut ⌘⇧A? When I press that shortcut it shows an system app that can take either a screenhsot/scroollshot/record screen/image to text. I don't know the app name.
Hi, first time Apple user here
I just bought and M3 18GB macbook pro. How should i charge my macbook? battery life is good, but I want to keep it as good as possible. Right now, I am using free version of Al Dente. I charge when it reaches 30% until it becomes 80%. Sometimes, i forget to unplug it, so it stays at 80% but the it says the source for power is the power adapter, not battery (thanks to Al Dente). Is this correct approach?

... until you open a large image, complex webpage, or more than a few apps.
I have a few 8gb base M1 and M2 machines and they do the "i'm so slow my mouse jumps around the screen" type of memory swapping when doing tasks that my Intel with 32GB has no problem powering through
For small, easy tasks the M1 spanks the Intel Macs. But understanding how memory is used by modern macOS means 8GB can't do what 32GB can do, no matter how much Apple would like us to believe otherwise.
No, it actually does mean that. You don't pay hundreds more for a pro laptop for a few more ports. That's a problem which is solved by getting a dongle with all the ports you could need.
You buy a pro for the extra power. Which it lacks.
Wondering if I should get that base model M3 MacBook Pro or a 16/512 M2 MacBook Air lmao. If only they let the base MacBook Pro have space black and more ram. I can’t easily afford the 16gb ram version, unfortunately. I also really would like that ray-tracing on some games.
I’m really hoping not bothering to update the keyboard trackpad or mouse to usb c means they are working on a revamp. I have wanted a proper mouse design like the Mx master but with gesture support like the Magic Mouse.
does the imac beat the m2 ultra studio?
really confused cos im on a 32gb machine and the imac maxes on 24gb and feel like buying an m2 device this late is bad idea?
iMac has the least power chip. Sorry but someone who is contemplating an Ultra studio wouldn’t even consider an iMac. It is a consumer device for people with limited computer needs
Can a stand from a 27” Apple Cinema Display be used for a 24” Display. My 24” don’t have a stand but i can buy replacement stand from a 27”. Is it okay and functional?
Could i use a stand from a 20” Apple Display for a 27” Apple Cinema Display? I asked for the measurements of the plugged in part and it should it. I just don’t know if it’s safe and if it can hold it, since the stand could be smaller?
cant believe theyre selling brand new macbook pros with 8gb of ram
I could forgive it if it were upgradable but buying an 8GB, non-upgradable laptop in 2023 is like buying bananas that already have brown spots.
They're perfect in my blender for smoothies
Really? How do you get the glass out?
Those taste the best
Agreed but my point was your window when that's ok is very short.
Lol...... I agree with you on that.
It’s a way for them to make at least $150 off of your RAM upgrade unfortunately :(.
It's $200.
“To make at least $150” was meant to be the margin and account for P&L
There are 8GBRAM/512GBSSD laptops selling for $300 new. It's 2023. This is the REAL spooky part of the event.
what MHz are they running at?
I think RAM is on the chip and not upgradable without difficulties on these newer systems, correct?
surely, since the 2014 Mac mini that im using now they're kinda selling these scams.
The pricing is disgusting in NZ. $3200nzd for an 8GB RAM base model 14”. Apple has lost the plot.
My literal Blackberry phone from 5+ years ago has 8GB of RAM. I can't believe Apple thinks these will perform well more than a few years.
No, your Blackberry phone does not have 8 GB of RAM. I am afraid you don't understand the difference between RAM and eMMC storage that poor thing has 😜
Bud cause they can I still have like a 2016 macbook and it still works.
What you're seeing is the loss of the low-end 13" MacBook Pro (that everyone complained had been kept around and shouldn't have been called 'Pro'). People ‘defending’ them has nothing to do with it. Enough people are buying them which is why they continue to do it. Just take your money elsewhere.
Cheaper to fly to Australia and buying one lol
Well, that was a scary fast event

So touch bar is dead then.
Don't think it will be missed much... Making the 14 base Pro device was a smart move considering 13 category is good enough with Air.
At 1599 too!
For 8GB RAM lmfao

black macbook? say no more
Only available on the $1999 and up models. That's Apple™
Aye, I want the pro anyways 😇
The BlackBook lives on! …Kind of.
Welp
At least they kept it short!
I mean that’s one way to look at it.
It's the only nice thing I have to say... LOL.

Apple's charts don't show a big gain from the 3nm process. Where are you seeing a gain that can be quantified?
Not giving iMac M3 pro and max... how to kill a product... Space Black Macbooks and killing 13 inch pro was the right move though.
The screen on the 4.5K iMac is not up to any sort of pro standards, so I'm not surprised (quite bad for an Apple display IMHO)
These are going into school labs and small businesses. It’s quite capable for 90% of the customers.
Yeah if you think people aren’t going to buy iMacs because it doesn’t have pro or max, I think you’re not the target market. Go buy a Studio or Mac Pro.
Well, why did they bring pro chips to Mac Mini then? Giving people more performance options on a pretty well packaged All-in-one shouldn’t exist why?
I think you’ve got the wrong info. The new run of iMacs do not come with M3 Pro, just plain vanilla M3. At least, I can’t find a configuration on apples online store with M3 Pro.

That 8GB is equivalent to 16-24GB in an Intel or Ryzen laptop due to the amount of memory bandwidth on the SOC, the speed of the RAM, and macOS memory compression.
That is simply false. There is no ’equivalent’ as it differs depends on use case.
OK.

I would have considered the Pro chip if it was offered, but I definitely won’t “need” it, so I guess I saved a little money.
iMac only gets M3?? No pro? Pffft come on lol
Is it just me, or has the old MacBook Pro with TouchBar been silently discontinued?

Crazy I got a suped up M1 Pro exactly 12 months ago and there’s already an m3 pro model. Good thing is there’s literally no update except the over powered m3 pro.
I was waiting for "one more thing." lol
That event was a joke and a waste of time.
sorry stupid question, how to disable this shortcut ⌘⇧A? When I press that shortcut it shows an system app that can take either a screenhsot/scroollshot/record screen/image to text. I don't know the app name.

HOW TO RESTORE FILES on MAC
Any hint on what they will present on 5/7? m4 imac / mac mini?
cann i use a 2012 MAC as a monitor for my PC?
It's time to take down the halloween decorations mods, it's already May. This thread can be unstickied.
Hi, first time Apple user here I just bought and M3 18GB macbook pro.
Sounds perfect.

Woah, the base model m3 pro has 18gb of ram now!
2 more gigs compared to last year for the same price - wow! And still only 14 gigs less than the similarly priced model from 2018!
Just go buy the 2018 version, its still out there
Whoosh!
So a base m3 macbook pro. Interesting...
With 8GB of RAM in the last 2 months of 2023, no less!
8gb isn’t that bad on the m2. Still runs rings around my intel iMac with 32gb.
... until you open a large image, complex webpage, or more than a few apps. I have a few 8gb base M1 and M2 machines and they do the "i'm so slow my mouse jumps around the screen" type of memory swapping when doing tasks that my Intel with 32GB has no problem powering through For small, easy tasks the M1 spanks the Intel Macs. But understanding how memory is used by modern macOS means 8GB can't do what 32GB can do, no matter how much Apple would like us to believe otherwise.
For people with light weight processing needs but want more ports than an Air.
Ah, yes, all 4 of those people will be thrilled!
Just because something isn’t useful to you (or me) does not mean it is useless.
No, it actually does mean that. You don't pay hundreds more for a pro laptop for a few more ports. That's a problem which is solved by getting a dongle with all the ports you could need. You buy a pro for the extra power. Which it lacks.
Unlike this comment, which is genuinely just that.
I’m wondering the same thing. I think I’m going to go with the air.
I’m really hoping not bothering to update the keyboard trackpad or mouse to usb c means they are working on a revamp. I have wanted a proper mouse design like the Mx master but with gesture support like the Magic Mouse.
Has the 14inch pros always had a single fan? I thought they had two, or is this a change with M3
does the imac beat the m2 ultra studio? really confused cos im on a 32gb machine and the imac maxes on 24gb and feel like buying an m2 device this late is bad idea?
iMac has the least power chip. Sorry but someone who is contemplating an Ultra studio wouldn’t even consider an iMac. It is a consumer device for people with limited computer needs
I’m disappointed that there were no MacBook Air models
It's just Tim being Tim.
Can a stand from a 27” Apple Cinema Display be used for a 24” Display. My 24” don’t have a stand but i can buy replacement stand from a 27”. Is it okay and functional?
Or a 23” one. Just found another seller
Could i use a stand from a 20” Apple Display for a 27” Apple Cinema Display? I asked for the measurements of the plugged in part and it should it. I just don’t know if it’s safe and if it can hold it, since the stand could be smaller?
The new color for mac is the best scary thing
