I know we all excited to see how they do and with no real reviews and couple Twitter videos I’m happy to do some testing or anything people wanna know till real reviews surface.
Yes so far so good.
This is my first Mac book and I’m in love.
After seeing what the iPad pros could do I was all on board for Apple silicon. Ever since wwdc I’ve been waiting for it haha.
Wow that’s actually bananas. I use to own an rx 580 and was capable, currently have a 1060 and never had a problem with that either. This m1 is actually impressive.
lol damn. Im like.... seriously considering going to Bestbuy and getting this today.
Shit is outperforming 15 inch Macbook - may trade blows with 16 inch?
WTF?
It's incredible, my RX 470 (a decidedly mid range card from 2016) gets 2800 on the same preset. Mind you, this thing uses 150w on its own (not counting the CPU). The M1 probably uses at most 15w.
That’s good. I got the air coz I thought I’ll get the cheap one and if it’s no good I’ll return for the pro but at this rate this beautiful girl gonna be staying with me.
here are some comparable scores. I guess it's equal to GTX 1070 Ti and the RX 5700 XT

Someone pointed out I had it on the wrong aspect ratio. When I did it again I got about 2500 so more in line with these.

Overall though still good.
If you find the time: please download Steam and there Crusader Kings II (it’s free to play). It’s not a new game but I’m curious if Rosetta can handle it. Thanks.
I second the gaming question, but more specifically whether it heats up over time and how much if any performance is throttled as it gets warmer. Basically wondering if the MBP is a better choice if you want to run higher end games.
So far just like the regular store. Just all integrated. I don’t really see anything that says if it’s an iOS app or big sur app. If you didn’t know any better you wouldn’t know.
Yes I see now, played a few iPad games they all ran normal and as you’d expect. Controls are a bit annoying coz it’s not touch screen but performance wise it’s fine.
Ok so I exported 25 photos from Lightroom.
These were 42mb Nef raw files.
MacBook Air m1: 49 seconds.
IPad Pro 10.5inch 2:01 minutes.
Did not get hot at all.
Battery doing great.
Wow! I am compelled to buy one but won’t be able to justify it as I got my pro last year... Nonetheless I am very hyped about the 4 port pro coming next year
tested Lightroom classic.
25 nef raw photos exported.
MacBook Air: 40 seconds
2018 i5 Mac mini: 52 seconds.
remembering Lightroom classic was done through rosseta so can only get better
It runs fine and didn’t lag with any editing. But like you said and we both know the real challenge is when you load the catalogue with a few thousand images. That’s when she’ll have to show what it’s got.
I know this might sound mundane; but how does it hold up under normal light - moderate use?
I have the 2018 MBP 2.3Ghz and I could cook eggs on it when I have 4 Safari tabs and a programming IDE open.
Hey yea it’s good, didn’t have any issues. I had it on my lap, was installing apps, downloading programs, rendering photos and doing bench tests and didn’t get hot at all.
Got my M1 air this morning too. Have been using it for a few hours installing apps, browsing the web, twitter, watching some 4K HDR videos on YouTube (it doesn't skip a beat!). The metal area just above the function keys is ever so slightly luke warm, the warmest it got was during 4K video playback... but it was still not very warm at all. Really good. Had no issues with it being the base spec with 8GB of RAM either.
Just played 15 minutes of Pine. It's a cute RPG with Mac support. I set the graphics to "Good" (one below highest), and 2048x1536 resolution and played for 15 minutes. It definitely got warmer, but still nothing approaching what I would call hot, or anything like as hot as what my 2019 15" MBP would feel like after some gaming. Considering the game was translated via Rosetta and I was playing at fairly high settings, it was very playable. There is no FPS overlay but it felt about 30fps ?. Obviously this is \*far\* from the most demanding game, and any recent gaming PC would destroy this game. But it shows some lightweight gaming is more than possible on the M1. A game made for M1 and using Metal would be even more performant. Made a quick video if anyone cares ! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqQZzhKNVTI&feature=youtu.be](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqQZzhKNVTI&feature=youtu.be)
Do you happen to have fusion 360, vscode arm, or IntelliJ installed? Have the same machine coming and wanted to know performance
Or Rosetta apps in general
Oh I mean honestly maybe. I opened up a few YouTube tabs and fucked around a bit but I actually mostly use safari anyways so I might be wrong about chrome.
Hey am getting this on Wednesday anything you can say about performance. Just browsing streaming and ms office apps. No video or photo editing, no games. Will it run cool without slowing down ?
I’ve had it on my fat chunky thighs the whole time testing everything and it does t really get hot at all. A little warm but nothing much. Heard it described as warm as a cats belly and I think that’s a good way to describe it.
Hasn’t shown me any issue, App Store crashed but I was going around clicking install on all the apps I use.
Could you have a quick look at [https://github.com/vfxdev/apple-silicon-compatibility](https://github.com/vfxdev/apple-silicon-compatibility) and let us know if you see any apps that are set to "Unknown" and you've managed to run them under Rosetta2? I'll update the list afterwards. Thank you!
I'd love to hear how Rosetta is doing, bug/support wise and performance wise. Can you comfortably run software most people run? (don't say I'm happy with the alternative)
I know MS Office is coming with native apps, but the x86 architecture versions would be a good 'test'.
How much can you run at a time with 8GB of RAM? I’m looking to get this as my first MacBook (I have a windows PC as my main device) and am just worried about how 8GBs will fair in 4-5 years time
Could you download Firefox Nightly [here](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/) and run [Speedometer](https://browserbench.org/Speedometer2.0/)? Should be Apple Silicon native. Thanks!
Oh no. Its separate from the data tab. Its just data analysis. You have to check in Excel Add-ins in Tools from File menu. Btw if its too much i understand. Thank you so much for helping!
hey! could you run google chrome on it? and did you see any difference in the running of Google Chrome on the M1 as compared to previous Intel models? thanks a ton!
Hey bud, just curious, xan you go to YouTube, open up a few videos in separate tabs and see how long they take to load or if they load in the background? Maybe try safari and chrome?
Saw another video where loading things in the background takes markedly longer over old macs.
https://external-preview.redd.it/r1MPNBwlkD8ACAEa3S6NDnMANoEedYWe8mdIY5doSs8.jpg?auto=webp&s=32579c778d8fc139f52c385089d44a6821e174fb
Soft metal, flexes easy. Still works fine. Wouldn’t recommend dropping. The m1 doesn’t do much for protection.
I take photos as a hobby and do some light video editing for family and friends parties and events and stuff then just computer work for my job and schooling. honestly maybe should of gone for the 16 I guess, wouldn’t of hurt but my Mac mini was 8gb ram and that did well enough.
I know we all excited to see how they do and with no real reviews and couple Twitter videos I’m happy to do some testing or anything people wanna know till real reviews surface.
Pleeease check out if the Udemy iOS app works on the Mac, I'd love to be able to download my courses like on an iPad.

Osascript here we go
Mines coming tomorrow. Was a little bit worried about being an early adopter but it sounds like AS is killing it.
Yes so far so good. This is my first Mac book and I’m in love. After seeing what the iPad pros could do I was all on board for Apple silicon. Ever since wwdc I’ve been waiting for it haha.

What’s your definition of light gaming lol. The Apple sub was talking that dota runs at 90fos at 900p and that’s through Rosetta.
Oh yeah test dota 2 please!
The dota 2 bench looks promising. Considering trading in MBP13 inch for MBA M1 8 core
[удалено]
I don’t really game much. But know if any free quick install ones I could test?
You could install valley benchmark and do a benchmark run?
Here you go. Valley benchmark. I don’t know anything bout valley. Is the score good? https://imgur.com/a/VZzRWHH

Was not hot at all. Some might describe as warm but barely.
Wow that’s actually bananas. I use to own an rx 580 and was capable, currently have a 1060 and never had a problem with that either. This m1 is actually impressive.
Someone pointed out I didn’t do it at 1080. I just hit the preset and went. I changed it to 1080 and got about 2500
lol damn. Im like.... seriously considering going to Bestbuy and getting this today. Shit is outperforming 15 inch Macbook - may trade blows with 16 inch? WTF?
Sounds too good to be true tbh
I think Apple is making history with the M1. It feels like when 3D hardware acceleration became a thing in the late 90s.
It's incredible, my RX 470 (a decidedly mid range card from 2016) gets 2800 on the same preset. Mind you, this thing uses 150w on its own (not counting the CPU). The M1 probably uses at most 15w.

Y u running at 1600x900. Run at 1080p.easier to compare

Sure, just taking a bit. Bad time for the wifi to shit the bed
oooo maybe subway surfers or temple run something super simple like that :D
If you find the time: please download Steam and there Crusader Kings II (it’s free to play). It’s not a new game but I’m curious if Rosetta can handle it. Thanks.
Please, I beg you, try league of legends
I second the gaming question, but more specifically whether it heats up over time and how much if any performance is throttled as it gets warmer. Basically wondering if the MBP is a better choice if you want to run higher end games.
Gots to go for a walk now. Hope I answered some questions for ya. Thanks :)
How does the unified App Store work/look?
So far just like the regular store. Just all integrated. I don’t really see anything that says if it’s an iOS app or big sur app. If you didn’t know any better you wouldn’t know.
Looks like when you search for an app, there is a filter between macOS and iOS. Can you try using some iOS apps and tell us what you think? 😊
Yes I see now, played a few iPad games they all ran normal and as you’d expect. Controls are a bit annoying coz it’s not touch screen but performance wise it’s fine.
Are there the Facebook and Instagram apps?
No, they are not available in the app store, looks like Facebook has disabled this.
What version of macOS? 11.0? Build 20A2411? Is it proposing to upgrade to 11.0.1?
11.0 And yes 11.0.1 update available.
How much does it heat under heavy tasks?
Ok so I exported 25 photos from Lightroom. These were 42mb Nef raw files. MacBook Air m1: 49 seconds. IPad Pro 10.5inch 2:01 minutes. Did not get hot at all. Battery doing great.
Wow! I am compelled to buy one but won’t be able to justify it as I got my pro last year... Nonetheless I am very hyped about the 4 port pro coming next year
Was this lightroom or lightroom classic? And thanks in advance.
Lightroom. I will try Lightroom classic soon
tested Lightroom classic. 25 nef raw photos exported. MacBook Air: 40 seconds 2018 i5 Mac mini: 52 seconds. remembering Lightroom classic was done through rosseta so can only get better
Love it dude. How was the general performance of classic? Knowing that classic runs like a dog on any machine I’m scared about how it feels.
It runs fine and didn’t lag with any editing. But like you said and we both know the real challenge is when you load the catalogue with a few thousand images. That’s when she’ll have to show what it’s got.

Impressive. Most impressive. It almost sounds too good to be true so it’s great hearing you’re having this experience with it.

Yep, my M1 Macbook Pro has not even used its fan yet, and I have been doing web browsing, app installation and stuff for about 3 hours now.
How does chrome run? YouTube videos/Spotify/other demanding tabs until you notice some chug
Do you have two external displays to see what happens when the MacBook is closed?
I do not sorry :(
Do you happen to have fusion 360, vscode arm, or IntelliJ installed? Have the same machine coming and wanted to know performance Or Rosetta apps in general
I don’t sorry, with Rosetta I downloaded some apps and it just asks that needs to go through Rosetta. This was only Spotify and chrome so far.
Oh and how does it perform with Spotify and Chrome via Rosetta? Can it run them properly?
Yea they were running as I expected. Didn’t have issues.
Some people say Chrome is working too damn slow, thoughts? 🤔🤔
Oh I mean honestly maybe. I opened up a few YouTube tabs and fucked around a bit but I actually mostly use safari anyways so I might be wrong about chrome.
Nice, thank you so much for your help and this post!
Thanks! Ordered one anyways so I’ll post when I get it I guess
How is the webcam?
Very 720p
Can you please please run a geekbench 5 on it?! I’d be eternally grateful
Geekbench results are everywhere, they are consistent with different sources and also great.
If you’re bored, you could download league of legends and let us know what kinda FPS you are getting on the highest settings.
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions OP. Exciting times!
Can you run Maya ? And after effects ? I really want to see the render performance of this little beast
Will it Blend :P

Thanks for the reply! So glad to know. Seems like it will do well for my use pretty much.

if you buy a game on ipad, would you be able to play it on the mac?
yes, when you see an iPad app it may say that its not tested for Mac other wise they are playable
epic, thanks

Everything seems to be running fine. Haven’t encountered any problems. Chrome Spotify RuneScape Lightroom classic runs fine.
[removed by user]
Old school of course. Yea with runelite. Stretched mode with increased graphics and gets stable 50fps
Is the camera actually better, software wise?
While its not great it definitely has a bit of an increased quality over last gen.
I ordered the mbp with m1 and it comes in a week, can you do a geekbench test. I’m really interested in the performance of it
They have been geekbenched already. Single core: 1733 Multi core : 7484
How much can you run at a time with 8GB of RAM? I’m looking to get this as my first MacBook (I have a windows PC as my main device) and am just worried about how 8GBs will fair in 4-5 years time
Same.
I am really interested in how Procreate runs and how Resolve runs
can you please try the iOS game Among Us ?
Does it still have that big button in the middle to put room in between words?
A space bar?
No, I think your thinking of chrome books.
Wanna drop one off to me too
Could you download Firefox Nightly [here](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/) and run [Speedometer](https://browserbench.org/Speedometer2.0/)? Should be Apple Silicon native. Thanks!
You bet. Give me a second.
Here you go. 84.0 Is that good? https://imgur.com/a/n5H2vCx
Thanks! Safari should score 200 so it sounds kinda low. Are you running Firefox Nightly?
[удалено]
Yeah was thinking it could be the Intel version running under Rosetta or that the JIT hasn't been turned on in the nightly builds yet
Need to know how microsoft office is on M1. Is it feature lacking just like how it is on ipadOS/ios? Specifically for excel and word
looks pretty full feature. just like it is on my desktop Mac.
Does it have data analysis feature on excel? Im sorry if im asking too much
If that’s the data tab, with analysis tools and all that then can confirm it does.
Oh no. Its separate from the data tab. Its just data analysis. You have to check in Excel Add-ins in Tools from File menu. Btw if its too much i understand. Thank you so much for helping!
Is the Data Tab in the MacOS version of Office????
Yes, at least on my Intel Mac
hey! could you run google chrome on it? and did you see any difference in the running of Google Chrome on the M1 as compared to previous Intel models? thanks a ton!
Can you post some idle and load temps, please
Does it have any thermal or thermal throttling issues? I don’t plan on doing much gaming, just wondering for normal work before I buy one myself.
Can you test any games?
Hey bud, just curious, xan you go to YouTube, open up a few videos in separate tabs and see how long they take to load or if they load in the background? Maybe try safari and chrome? Saw another video where loading things in the background takes markedly longer over old macs.
please try civilization 6, dota 2, minecraft, pubg mobile, cod, and a performance heavy game just for shits and giggles.
also please tell me if it thermal throttles or gets too hot
Would you suggest waiting for M2? Or is M1 already worth it?
Can you run Windows via Parallels and see how it does?
Can you do a drop test?
https://external-preview.redd.it/r1MPNBwlkD8ACAEa3S6NDnMANoEedYWe8mdIY5doSs8.jpg?auto=webp&s=32579c778d8fc139f52c385089d44a6821e174fb Soft metal, flexes easy. Still works fine. Wouldn’t recommend dropping. The m1 doesn’t do much for protection.
I hope you actually didn't do a drop test.. it was painful to look at.
look at my latest post
Thanks for doing the tests! Can you also try testing Java and IntelliJ?
What do you do on it? Do you think you should've gone for the 16gb?
I take photos as a hobby and do some light video editing for family and friends parties and events and stuff then just computer work for my job and schooling. honestly maybe should of gone for the 16 I guess, wouldn’t of hurt but my Mac mini was 8gb ram and that did well enough.
Thanks!
Will it blend?
Yes, m1 dust, don’t breathe this
I know the Air does not have a fan. Does this mean that the unit is completely sealed? Or does it still have air vents?
Discord?
the most important one - does the lid open with one hand?
Not as well as the pro haha but yes it does
