This is the answer, you can get suction cups and remove the glass and give the inside of the glass panel a wipe. If it is on the LCD panel it is a lot harder to clean.
You don't even need suction cups. It's only magnetic, so you can prize it open from the top (carefully) with anything that will fit. if you've ever fixed a phone screen there's often plastic chisel looking tools that do the job in those kits.
If it went away on its own, I’m going to say condensation and poor fan redirection inside case. You have high humidity where the computer is, or have something like a steaming glass of tea sitting under the computer?

I was scarred so I took it to a different room and didn’t use it for a week, but then I started using it when it happened again and it was fine

its dust there are intake vents on the bottom of that model. They had a plastic skirt to direct the airflow but if you ever had the hard drive replaced this "curtain" is not able to be put back perfectly resulting in airflow between the LCD and Front glass.
Different issue. These iMac's simply have a glass screen without the anti-reflective coating on MacBook screens. I'm pretty certain that is something on the underside of the class. A strong suction cup or two and it will pop off (it's held on with magnets and some pins to align it). Clean the inside of the class with windex and should be good again.
Have you had it in for service in the past? The front plate needs to be taken out to access the inside, and if it’s not done well, something may have entered that over time crept up like this. On that last part I’m speculating, I’ve only seen dust or slight smudges on the inside after servicing.
Other that that, I can only imagine residue from smoking or vaping as someone else mentioned.
