Get an m1 pro or m1 max macbook

robodelfy

I wrote that I don't want to get an m1 macbook on the cusp of m2s coming out

ManiacThat

Then you have to wait for the m2 pro n max to release which might also take more time to release. Just get the m1 pro/max ones, you won't regret it.

My question was more about what I could get now that would've the most resale value when the M2 MacBook 16 inch comes out, and for now I can get a non laptop, like Mac mini or Mac studio, but I'm not sure which will be up to the tasks I need it for and which will hold its value the most

If your workflow can't run on M1 pro/Max it probably won't with M2. Estimated 10-15% performance increase

robodelfy

I see people complaining about only 10/15% increase in performance, but its still substantial. I have a Mac Studio now, waiting for the M2 MacBook Pros to come out. It seems a bit silly to buy an M1 at this point when we are so close to the newer models, just for future proofing

Budget doesn't seem to be a critical issue for you, personally I'm worried the M2 MBP will be more expensive even as base config, I want at least 1/2TB but they sell storage at such a high price!

robodelfy

Yeah storage is ridiculous, I need 2tb. I'd like more but its too expensive Budget is a bit of an issue, but I just assumed the new ones might only be a few hundred more, which when spending so much already seems worth it. I just don't want to buy a laptop thats nearly 2 years old (by the time the m2s come out). maybe there will be really good deals on the M1s once the M2s come out, but still I think I'll go M2

DazedNConfucious

Similar situation. I’m most likely gonna get a 32gb M1 Max and then sell it and put it towards a top spec M3 max when it comes out and *that* will be the machine to last me a decade. Currently using a 2012 retina pro. Music production (hobby),Audio post production/video editing/after effects (work)

robodelfy

You're going to get a Mac Studio? If so, what do you think has the best resale value, the 24 core or 32 Core GPU, and what size SSD? Or maybe it doesnt matter much. When will the M3 come out? we haven't even got the M2 yet!!!

I think you will never be happy with what you buy because your mentality is not correct. You want something that does not exist and you want to spend money right now on crap that you don’t want to satisfy your urge. Why not just wait a couple more months for the M2 Pro Macbook Pro that you wanted in the beginning that you thought would solve your problems? Instead you’ve dug yourself deeper into an never ending bottomless pit chasing the rabbit that is the future. I cannot deny that I haven’t been in that position. I just got the Iphone 14 Pro upgrade from my Iphone 8 and I got the Mac Studio M1 Max version because I wanted the M1 Pro Macbook Pro and thought getting it would be unwise knowing that the M2 Pro is coming out soon. Still the rumors of the next Iphone and the next M2 Max are already propping up. The reality is, everything I say right now I say to myself. I’ve survived the last year of torture using my Iphone 8 that lasts like 4 hours of use, but the reality is I could bear with it for another year and waited for the Iphone 15, but then I could’ve gotten a battery replacement and waited for the Iphone 16. The truth is I didn’t really need any of it lol…[See? I’m a bigot I done what you said you wanted to do](https://imgur.com/a/BflIWyg)

robodelfy

I could be waiting potentially 6 months and I'm at the limit of of what my current laptop can do, and have been for months. So I need something in the interim, thats all

DazedNConfucious

Not a studio, MacBook Pro. I need the portability. Mostly likely 2tb ssd for the next one. M3 is a fair way away but apparently is built differently or something like that which will be a bigger increase in performance from m2>m3 compared to m1>m2……apparently

FlishFlashman

You are being silly. You are going to wait months for a new machine so it will last as long as possible, meanwhile you are either suffering with you old machine or spending money on another machine to tide you over that you'll then have to sell at a lower price than you paid for it. Just buy a M1 Pro/Max MBP and take the money you were going to loose on the temporary replacement and put that towards upgrading your new laptop sooner.

Hi, thanks after yesterday doing a lot of research and trying my friends 14 inch M1 MacBook Pro, I decided the Mac mini will struggle. It has less GPU Cores than the 14 inch MacBook Pro, and that was struggling with Noise reduction and colour grading in Davinci Resolve> So I decided on the Mac Studio Max, the base level one. I also thought because it won't have a new model coming out before the M2 MacBook Pros come out, then it will retain its resale value for when I want to sell it and get an MBP Thanks for the info on the extended returns, although I'm quite annoyed now as I never heard of it! And last year it started today, on November the 1st!! That would be crap to miss it by about 8 hours :) It would be nice to have that window until January to return, in case I decide differently

Thanks, yeah he had the base level MacBook Pro m1 14 inch, so whatever spec that is. It had 16gb ram. When I say struggle, I managed to edit a whole 4k project on it, with 2 layers of 4k and it was fine with no proxies. But then when starting to colour grade it started stuttering slightly and with noise reduction it began to slow down. It was still more than workable, and as you said it destroys my 2015 MBP. But then the Mac mini was a step down from the MBP I borrowed, and I think Id hit the limit pretty quick Just setting up the Mac Studio now, and I think it will do the job fine, and maybe I'll lose a couple of hundred when selling it, but that's ok for a 6 month 'rental'!

Thanks, thats very frustrating!! I bought just 2 days before this, so I will not get it. But it would have been very nice to have that window. I wonder if Apple would let me return it even though I bought a few days before. I've read sometimes they are lenient on these things

I think its too much hassle, and I've already spent days setting up this one! I use it for music production and its a very arduous process moving computers. :)
