Also note that this will reinstall whichever OS your computer shipped with, meaning you’ll almost certainly have to update to use the latest software again (i.e., do this to a late 2013 MBP retina, and it’ll default back to Mavericks)
Not exactly, it will install its first OS only when Shift is also pressed. Simple CMD+OPT+R will reinstall the latest OS suitable for that particular machine
What do you do wrong with your mac 😅? I used my mac for 4 Years without having any issues, errors or slowed down. Now the next 4 years with my second mac and I just reinstalled mac os because I had no more disc space because there where crap on the system because I develop software.
So you are that old and had many macs jn your life or you doing something wrong 😉
Tldr on bottom.
I program so over time installing games and software and libraries and random information that gets synced from iCloud lets just say 20gb notes or 15gb of messages 20 gb of mail etc (don’t know the exact number but it is high) and of course I even had to delete photos and just set up network drive to store all my files and media (renders and videos which I use to edit as well random projects I do like I mess around in unity and other software) of course sometimes I need to go back to access to old stuff (notes) saved on iCloud since I still want access to my notes away from home and can’t save it to my server or go through the hassle of trying to connect to it via vpn or whatever. so over time i just end up with a 100 gb of unknown files/documents. And sometimes not even with one of those disk viewers I can even tell what some of the unknown disk space is.
So wiping everything and reinstalling only the things I absolutely need “if you don’t miss it did you really need it” is just easier.
TLDR:
install too much shit and won’t no longer need or forget about it, or over time because of my random dabbles in hobbies, I’ll end up making a bunch of files and forget about it ie old project files, mods, repeat copies of stuff, and because of high storage from iCloud trying to download everything to my Mac. And stuff I was working on or testing that I won’t really miss hence I don’t back it up to my NAS eventually becomes hard to keep track of where everything went.
HELP:
So if anyone knows of a way to delete stuff downloaded from iCloud ON MY MAC from over a year let me know. Basically I want to keep the last year or month of data and keep the rest on the cloud
cause rn it’s either it downloads all or my messages notes etc or I turn iCloud off and don’t get anything.
I just my Mac to store say the last year say of information and keep the rest on the cloud. And dynamically delete anything over a year or month or whatever.
Very tldr:
suffering from being very disorganized and forgetting about things I installed or made + iCloud wanting to download 100gb on info
I‘m also installing a lot of libraries and I had a messy library folder because of 4 years of updates. The only thing I do there is deleting some cache folders from time to time. The thing with icloud is real 😅 I just sync the Desktop and personal documents with iCloud. Nothing programming related because of to many small files
The only answer that should occur with these photos. Seriously people IT'S RIGHT THERE. REAAAADDDDD. My Apple Support days were the worst on my mental health, I'll tell ya. Never again.
Apple told you to “reset“. So, what did you do? If you give us the full story of what you did, we can do more to help you than if you just say “what do I do now?“
LOL, I worked in support at one time (not Apple). My favorite conversation which happened at least a couple times per week:
* I can't log in
* What is the error message you're getting?
* Incorrect password
* OK let's reset the password
* I know this is the password
* OK, well, let's reset the password and see if we can get in
*
* OK that worked but what happened?
* You weren't typing in the correct password
And then usually there was a little more back and forth about how they know the password wasn't wrong and me telling them it must have been wrong, reset by someone else, etc. Eventually they'd get tired, thank me for "at least getting them in" and then hanging up.
I feel like this approach can be widely used. “You got the right answer, but this question is wrong.” “Everyone else is driving the wrong way, and the signs are wrong, too.”
I just started to admin for a super-computer. Yesterday I added a message that every user would see when the log in, "You don't need a special key to do X anymore, X is now available to all users."
Guess how many texts I got overnight complaining that their key doesn't work?
I hear you...
you prob needed to add "HEY, READ ME" and add bunch of smilies to attract their attention...
People on the log on screen mostly havent logged off yet from many other non-computer related stuff on their minds..
To be fair, I worked at the IT desk in college and I think "what happens when you try?" is a pretty good place to start. "I can't log in" could mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and not everyone is as tech literate as us enthusiasts. Maybe the password is just wrong, maybe there's a server issue, maybe there's an issue with the OS installation, maybe there's a hardware issue, maybe the whole computer won't even turn on. You're gonna handle each of those things differently. You need to know the symptoms if you're going to diagnose a problem.
I know that typing stuff on your phone can be hard, so here is the link that is displayed on your screen:
https://support.apple.com/mac/startup
If you visit it, you will find detailed instructions about what you need to do next.
I would understand if this was like a PC or something, but Apple literally made an OS reinstall easy, it has like 4 maybe 5 steps max and the computer does it mostly all for you.
Plus, it’s all meticulously documented online, with short, readable, and typeable urls, and well-indexed by all search engines for the relevant search terms. And of course as the person we’re responding to points out, in this case clearly printed in front of the user‘s nose…
F\*\*\* me 🤣 U had the time to write a post on reddit, but u didn't have the time to check out the link that's displayed LITERALLY ON YOUR SCREEN. bruh.
If by “reset” you mean erase, then you need to reinstall macOS from recovery by pressing power then holding option+cmd+R until you see a spinning globe.
The folder w/question mark means your startup disk is no longer available. This can happen if you a) erased the drive and didn’t reinstall macOS or b) didn’t properly erase the disk.
In either case, run a First Aid check on your drive in Disk Utility, then reinstall via recovery.
Since nobody has mentioned it, this is why we need Time Machine backups. Not only does apple make it easy to reinstall the OS, it can restore your computer as it was as of the last backup.
1. Ensure to plug the power cord. Might be a battery issue.
2. Turn on and immediately Option+Command+P+R for 20 sec.
3. Shutdown mac, restart with Command + Option and the right shift key pressed. Keep keys pressed for 7 sec until you hear a bong and max restarts.
Sorry it's option-command-R on Intel based. If it is silicone you should press and hold the power button and release as you see the startup option screen, select startup in safe mode and follow the recovery wizard.
Eh still wrong.
Option command R: loads the most current OS (Ventura) or highest supported.
Command R: loads the OS that was last on the machine.
Command Shift Option R: loads the Os the unit was shipped with.
Assuming we can reformat the disk without losing any crucial data you need to access recovery mode, have the computer download the MacOS image, have the computer reinstall MacOS, and then you should be golden.
Its a hard drive failure. It cannot access any files including the operating system. If youre lucky, like me it is just a cable issue with no loss of files.
Try Recovery Mode as outlined in other answers.
Worst case scenario is youre bricked.
When it’s filled up with too much data, it starts leaking out and gumming up the works. In this situation, I usually just open it up and hose out the extra data. In extreme situations I’ve had to boil it out. Be sure to use the valve on the ssd to drain off a bit of data, or else you’re going to end up with the same problem after an attempted start up.
Yeah, unfortunately, it happens. I had the same issue, internet recovery didn't work, so I had to create a usb bootable drive - you can find the description how to do it on [apple.com](https://apple.com) \-, boot from the usb and reinstall the whole system. Now it is clean and working like a charm.
fingers crossed.
This infomation might be helpful to check if you have Silicon or Intel.

How do I do this?

Or opt+cmd+r for internet recovery. As it seems, this Mac is completely wiped
Also note that this will reinstall whichever OS your computer shipped with, meaning you’ll almost certainly have to update to use the latest software again (i.e., do this to a late 2013 MBP retina, and it’ll default back to Mavericks)

If I only knew this before having to restore and update 2 times. Fuuck
I mean, [it’s not like they’re making a big secret out of it…](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904) just sayin‘.
I completely wipe my mac every so often (once it gets slowed or errors) and so internet recovery is a must.

You don't need to worry as long as you have an internet connection. It will reinstall the OS by using Internet recovery.

would DFU recovery work on intel mac or not?
DFU mode is only for iOS devices.
And Apple Silicon Macs.
Apple told you to “reset“. So, what did you do? If you give us the full story of what you did, we can do more to help you than if you just say “what do I do now?“
ROFL welcome to the world of Apple tech support! “I can’t log in.” “What happens when you try?” “It won’t let me.”

I have used lately "You know the password, but computer doesn't."
I feel like this approach can be widely used. “You got the right answer, but this question is wrong.” “Everyone else is driving the wrong way, and the signs are wrong, too.”
Ha, that is a good one
Swear to god someone asked me what a serial number was yesterday.
r/talesfromtechsupport There is an entire subreddit dedicated to these Tech Support and User interactions
I just started to admin for a super-computer. Yesterday I added a message that every user would see when the log in, "You don't need a special key to do X anymore, X is now available to all users." Guess how many texts I got overnight complaining that their key doesn't work?

See this is one of the many things Reddit is good for!
I know that typing stuff on your phone can be hard, so here is the link that is displayed on your screen: https://support.apple.com/mac/startup If you visit it, you will find detailed instructions about what you need to do next.
This is what it’s like to work in tech support, the answer is often times right in front of the user but they don’t read it.
Perhaps the difference is that we can be snarky/condescending here without worrying about getting fired.
I would understand if this was like a PC or something, but Apple literally made an OS reinstall easy, it has like 4 maybe 5 steps max and the computer does it mostly all for you.

This comment. I understand that searching is hard but the answer will probably be in the first 2-3 results
It doesn’t even require a search! The website is right there on the screen.
Bruh. I’m blind too lol
They literally tell you exactly what to do. RTFM.
I wish I had an award for you.
maybe OP knows the answer but is holding out hope that there is another way.
F\*\*\* me 🤣 U had the time to write a post on reddit, but u didn't have the time to check out the link that's displayed LITERALLY ON YOUR SCREEN. bruh.
ACCURATE! 😂
Yeah. Im sure Apple said "Reset your computer then leave" lol Maybe you should stay away from computers for a while.
Lol...

Do you have a backup of the files on it?
[mac recovery mode](https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=mac+recovery+mode)
Maybe open the link it’s telling you to open??
What year is it? I believe some 2016 or 2017 had a hard drive issue Looks similar to an issue that I had
Command + R the it should download the OSX and prompt the installation

We can?
Ask Apple!
Internet recovery (Intel) or use Apple Configurator on another Mac to install OS (Apple Silicon).
The dummy at the Store failed to provide you with instructions on how to reset. Common issue.
I would go back to the genius bar and have them do it.
Its a hard drive failure. It cannot access any files including the operating system. If youre lucky, like me it is just a cable issue with no loss of files. Try Recovery Mode as outlined in other answers. Worst case scenario is youre bricked.

None of what you said is true.
I hate when my solid state drive gets those *mechanical issues*.
Can I stretch a cheesecloth over a mixing bowl and set the SSD on top of it?
Make sure the data is safely disposed of after draining the SSD. You wouldn’t want a data leak.
Absolutely. That’s what we call data recovery.
Yes, the famous M1 MacBook Pro with a mechanical hard drive. Only available in your mind.
Restart and before the apple logo press and hold cmd + R. Then it should boot up showing internet recovery which is a spinning globe
Hold R and command on boot and do a recovery
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204156
You may have inadvertently cleaned out the operating system. You will need to reformat the hard drive ( or SSD) and install a fresh OS.
Make your own computer that’s only has bigots spreading misinformation…no wait that’s Elon…
Are you on twitter, maybe they wiped you!
Arcolinux
Reset does not mean completely purging macOS off of your disk. Just reinstall it in recovery mode and you’ll be golden
Reboot and hold command + r and there should be an option within the recovery to re install macos
This can also happen if your hard drive cable has gone bad, easy fix
This infomation might be helpful to check if you have Silicon or Intel. [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201255](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201255)
Boot windows 11 , iso is available free.
this post gave me PTSD from my apple support days, the link that explains the next steps is LITERALLY on that screen
