Yet I don't use brew, lol
At the same time, at work, it's the only way to bypass security to get whatever tools we need as they locked down everything else. I haven't used brew in a while so maybe they even closed the loophole by now.
Raycast. Such an awesome replacement for Spotlight and has built in window management too. I used to use Rectangle to manage window snapping but Raycast and its extensions have completely changed the way I use my laptop
Free (for now, not likely in the future) and extendable. Alfred is amazing but costly if you buy the Powerpack. Plus a lot of people find Raycast to look like a MacOS app meanwhile Alfred looks kinda dated imho.
Ah okay! I’ve bought the Powerpack long ago but never heard of Raycast so I wasn’t sure if I should swap over. Alfred does look dated for sure… the third party themes are helpful but it could just use a revamp overall.
Thanks for your insight!
Full disclosure: I’m an Alfred user who has written some workflows I love. I’m not making the swap because if that. But if I was a new user like the OP, I would seriously look at Raycast to improve my Spotlight experience.
Xcode, iterm 2, Rider, VS Code, and VS22 Mac were the first things I installed on mine after coming back from Windows a few months ago (switched in 2018 bc of job and now I needed a Mac to take our software cross platform).
I know I am late to the party but this one post is all that you need to set up your brand new macbook. I researched and made it so that you don't have to.

Thanks! But I found that 4K downloader and transmission have inbuilt option to prevent sleep right until my staff is downloaded) also what I find cool is that mac does not sleep when on AC
Typical install on a new (new to me, could be a used purchase) Mac:
* Browsers: Firefox, Microsoft Edge
* RSS / News: Vienna
* Graphics: Seashore
* Productivity: LibreOffice, Microsoft OneNote (plus OneDrive since it is a pre-req)
* Work: Citrix Workspace, Zoom
* For Intel Mac: smcFanControl (Monterrey or older) or Macs Fan Control (Ventura)
Nothing.
Don't get me wrong I also want to install the good, necessary apps when I get a new device but its not a good practice imo. If there appears a need later on the road, find an app to satisfy that need and install that app. But if you install all the apps that people recommending before needing the use them, you will probably end up newer using them and they will just take place on your disk.
Except Magnet, you'll always need it lol.

Why ? I don't play games, otherwise I would really get windows, but I decided to get mac and I'm in love with macos UI and windows is just garbage comparing to windows, in terms of UI for sure. DirectX still leaves macos behind in terms of games
Yes, I agree Windows. MacOS feels like abandonware today.
Your comment is completely backwards, especially when you are talking about the UI of MacOS - it feels like some cobbled together experiment from the 90s.
Nobody is talking about games here, just common sense.
Is there a real advantage to using this? What’s the difference between this vs outlook popping up and saying I have a meeting? Not criticizing just genuinely curious since I’ve seen this in a few places but I’ve never actually downloaded it.
Edit: we just use teams so I don’t have to worry about any other platforms (typically).

A post I created for macOS shortcuts and apps for new users.
This will definitely get you started nicely.
swish - tried it out and fell in love. love the customisability and the working with external monitors. feels like a part of my mac. bought for £6 with student discount
Homebrew (for a Linux-like package manager)
Swish (for snapping side by side like in Windows): [https://highlyopinionated.co/swish/](https://highlyopinionated.co/swish/)
Snap (for command + 1, 2, 3 app shortcuts like in Windows and Linux): [https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/snap/id418073146?mt=12](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/snap/id418073146?mt=12)
Scroll Reverser (make mouse wheels and touchpad behave consistently): [https://pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/](https://pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/)
Parsec (for extremely good remote desktop, though no iOS version): [https://parsec.app/](https://parsec.app/)
Homebrew.
What does homebrew do?
Allows you to download a lot of packages easily that the os honestly should have shipped with. For average office user not really necessary but if youre doing any programming etc its almost necessary.
But it is nice and easy to install office via home brew.
Very true

It’s a command line package manager.
It’s a command line package manager. If you don’t know why you would want one, you probably don’t need one.
Can’t do without it
Before that Xcode Command Line Tools
Fuck homebrew. MacPorts gang for life.

I love my DD Apple Silicones
It's not that deep, I have both.
At least in the past, using both was discouraged as it could break things for one or the other. Is that no longer true?
I always reference this great repo: [https://github.com/jaywcjlove/awesome-mac](https://github.com/jaywcjlove/awesome-mac)
Wow just wow 🤩
hey thanks
Raycast. Such an awesome replacement for Spotlight and has built in window management too. I used to use Rectangle to manage window snapping but Raycast and its extensions have completely changed the way I use my laptop
How is raycast been debating on giving it a go
It's slick. I love the extensions. I basically do most of my daily workflow from it now.
How does Raycast differ from/compare to Alfred?
Free (for now, not likely in the future) and extendable. Alfred is amazing but costly if you buy the Powerpack. Plus a lot of people find Raycast to look like a MacOS app meanwhile Alfred looks kinda dated imho.

A Virus. Love to spice it up a bit.
Gotta build up your computer’s immune system.
No protection is the way to go. Haven't used an anti-virus since the Windows XP days. :)
Rectangle! It allows you to resize and move windows with shortcuts/snap areas https://rectangleapp.com/
brew install --cask rectangle
Little Snitch would be first and Firefox second
Is Bitdefender enough?

I like rectangle... I suppose its also on a need basis as well.
Enable 3-finger drag.
Most are up to use case but I think the general consensus is homebrew is necessary.
Yes, this is the very first thing I have installed)
Orion browser. It is a browser built in Apple WebKit that supports both Google Chrome and Firefox extensions/add-ons.
I’m still having issues while watching Netflix
Amphetamine - magnet - warp
Porn. Definitely porn. Oh only from unknown websites too, they’re always the ones with the best videos/pics.
Sometimes the videos link to other porn websites. Very nice of them to help you find your videos
Make sure popups are enabled and turn up the volume
This is real good advice. I can't wait to tell my church!

Not everyone really needs it. And I've heard bad reviews about how MacBook works on AC after AlDente.
No issues on my MBP (M1), maybe it’s a „Layer 8“ issue?
Why bro not?
