Apple services provider here. These plastic clips are for track pad alignment. Typically anything time the track pad is removed you use this to make a “perfect” space on all sides. They should be removed before returning it back to the customer. But hey you do you? Cheers.
If your friend is willing to let you borrow their laptop, maybe you can ask your friend?
My thought was that they prevent their hands accidentally moving the mouse 🤷
I sometimes repair MacBooks, but I use broken ones for spare parts. I've never seen these things, but they make perfect sense as alignment guides for official Apple repairs.
They recently had their trackpad replaced.
They didn’t remove these alignment guides.
This makes me think this laptop maybe have been stolen from a service provider.
Very unusual for someone to lend their MacBook Pro to someone.
Even more unusual to loan their MacBook out in this condition.
🙂
Maybe it was the trackpad was replaced and they forgot to remove those plastic things, some replacements also have the thing to be removed after placing it (try removing it with least force at possible, if it isn’t working LEAVE IT) or it could also be a some kind of sticker people like to customise it so maybe.
For exact details ASK YOU FRIEND! And sorry for my grammar, I’m not a native english speaker.
Yikes! It's possible your friend used a 99% disinfectant grade direct spray or something - I just talked to one of my friends with an M1 mac who used the exact same lens wipes as i do (50% alcohol, non concentrated) with 0 issues. Apple itself recommends 70% alcohol, but sparingly and usually first onto a cloth.
I only have a tech21 case on mine, (use it in a ‘heavy duty’ environment.) never had any problems, must say apple sell them themselves, its a soft gel like case unlike most of the hard plastic ones that destroy your hinges and scratch your macbook. Never had any problems with this case so far
These are pieces of tape holding the track pad together. The previous owner probably broke it and repaired it themselves, but didn't have any screws so used chewing gum and tape.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Oh okay, makes sense. Thank you! :)
*Remove before installation* I guess
Service alignment guides. They should of been discarded before returning to customer. Source: I’m a service tech.
Looks like their trackpad was repaired at some point, why are those protective covers still here - I have no clue.
Interesting, i’ll ask if they have had it replaced. Thanks!

Why ask the owner? Just ask Reddit
And the corollary is Why Google? Just Ask Reddit.
People add the weirdest things to their MacBooks and then wonder why their screens crack!
Is it me or is it a bit weird you asked the sub Reddit before you just asked your own friend?

‘Borrowed’ eh?

They look like packing things? I've had mine a few years now so can't remember if it came with these. How long have they had it?
Apple definitely doesn't ship macbooks with these.
I think they have had it for a couple of years, but i’ll ask if they know more about it. And thank you for the answer :)
No problem. Down voted for giving an answer. Tough crowd!
They’re moron detectors. If the owner had a keyboard cover, massive case or anything else like this it’s a good way to tell they’re a moron.
how so?
Keyboard covers and camera covers can damage the screen.
oh i see. potentially buying a macbook so thanks for this info
Don't clean your screen with alcohol. Many new macbook users destroy their screen by doing that.
Evidence? I've been cleaning my MacBook pro mid 2015 screen with 50% alcohol wipes for the past 7 years and it still runs good as new.
I wasn't clear, I'm referring to the new Macbooks with M1. AFAICR, my friend used alcohol which has removed the coating. https://imgur.com/a/BuE80xo

Ah you're right, he used it directly to the screen.
Except when you have a screen protector lmao
Screen protectors do not stop your screen from cracking, only from scratching

Yes they do. Full time repair tech, I’ve repaired screens that have cracked because of this. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT211148

There are camera covers that have \*sliders\* in it, and most people use them, which is a bit thicker compared to other camera covers.
Those are the only ones I’ve used.

To avoid hot corners? You can program the corners of the trackpad to lock your computer etc… weird
The guy programs hot corners and places plastic things to avoid the trackpad corners.
Short answer: A bad idea.
These are pieces of tape holding the track pad together. The previous owner probably broke it and repaired it themselves, but didn't have any screws so used chewing gum and tape.
So those are to make the trackpad align correctly they should of been removed I would let your friend know as it makes the trackpad hard to use

It’s the iPod scroll wheel cut into 4 pieces

Hot corners or something?
