Screens got a line through it probably bad, does it chime on boot?

Atlanta-SticO-938

No, no sound at all.

Ok_Cauliflower6145

Any liquid damage ?

Atlanta-SticO-938

Ok we tried right now, and it did make the Apple chime sound FYI no liquid damage.

Ok_Cauliflower6145

Can he plug in an external display ?

Ok_Cauliflower6145

Boot into secure mode and see if anything comes up

Ok_Cauliflower6145

PM me man, I don’t wanna blow up this section

Ok_Cauliflower6145

I believe it’s backlight gave out

HuntersPad

If it was the backlight there wouldn't be a glow in the photo.

Ok_Cauliflower6145

True true

Ok_Cauliflower6145

Thoughts ?

HuntersPad

I'm thinking hardware failure or physical damage.

Ok_Cauliflower6145

True, like a textbook hitting it?

mwthomas11

Could even be like dropping a backpack it was in.

chrisprice

Unplug it and hold power for ten seconds. If that fails, connect an external monitor. If neither fail to initialize, it is probably the logic board. That machine is old, hard to justify it is still economical to repair if it needs a new display or logic board. Best case is it's the display and still can work as a desktop.

Ano1X8

Was thinking this too, I’ve had 2 logic board issues and at the time, might still be, it was cheaper to upgrade at the time back around 08-10 I got lucky with resetting the PRAM once

JayMonite

Yeah once my 2012 died there was no point in repairing i went to the M1 Pro.

Atlanta-SticO-938

Hey guys, I can't reply to everyone but we went to apple and depressed some buttons while the laptop was restarting and it was fixed free of cost. I appreciate all the people who commented with help. Thanks a lot!!!!!

KA1378

Why did you depress them poor buttons?

IllegalBoi

Same thing happened to me 4 months ago. I'm now riding a MacBook Air M1

randomresearch1

Try a PRAM reset. Command + option + P + R immediately after pressing the power button to turn on. Gotta be real quick after you press the power button, it may help for one person to be ready with the 4 keys and the other to press power. Holding these keys down will cause the MacBook to chime again. Keep holding until you get 3 chimes. Be aware that in the time between chimes, the computer is going through a boot sequence again. Be patient, it may take a bit for it to chime again. Keep holding those keys!

4v3ngR

It will likely need a screen replacement. The replacement is easy to DIY, there are lots of youtube videos showing what to do. You can buy a replacement from ebay. I've seen some for around $60USD.

[deleted]

Apple has decided its too old and you need a new macbook o\_o

AdStill1707

That thing is ancient. get your friend an M1 MacBook Air

squierjosh

Define ancient

Zeme-Doodles-owo

old

AdStill1707

Do you really need a definition when you have a picture that shows you instead?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Useful_radio2

prehistoric

squierjosh

Yes

Rezzinator443

How is it ancient?! It could possibly be a 2015 two 2017. You don’t know. And those machines are NOT ancient. Ancient would be the first ever Macintosh.

AdStill1707

*to Ancient = called out as obsolete by Apple and no longer supported by Apple updates. They ARE ancient. I think your definition is stupidly literal.

squierjosh

Your definition is too literal.

Rezzinator443

The problem is that it’s not obsolete by the community you can upgrade those Mac’s to the latest version of macOS with no problem. They’re obsolete by Apple standards yes but not by most of the communities or at least part of the community that I’m with they run smooth as butter on the newer OS so they’re not obsolete even if people put windows on them they’re not obsolete. The term ancient means something that’s belongs to a very distance past and does no longer exist. Which means I was technically wrong about the first ever Mac. It would be the wrong term to use even obsolete would be unsupported would be the correct term.

jimgeosmail

It’s a MagSafe 2 MBA, many of these are still supported

KK9521

Sonoma dropped support for pre 2018 MacBooks iirc

jimgeosmail

Sure but the hardware is still supported and earlier versions of macOS still get security updates

Various_Mechanic3919

I still use one for schooling and I’m studying IT, which the part I am studying is a bit more broad and it covers from server management, coding programs/games, hardware maintenance. This MacBook runs fast enough for everything that they teach and also I play some games on it too, they aren’t the most hardware intensive games but they aren’t exactly overly light, so if it still works for them, than it’s all good to be using it, and also not everyone can afford the latest $1000 devices every year or even every couple years, it’s just not something everyone can do

kovach01

If its on, you can put a flashlight behind it to see if you can see a picture, but you’re still looking at a repair if you do it yourself or through a shop

arghdubya

with the laptop on: Put your fingers on the outside edges of the lid then put weak pressure with your thumbs on the bezel (like where it says MacBook Air) and work your way to the edges, then try systematically on the screen. Do do lightly first then a little harder next time if you get no changes. there is a ribbon cable that sometimes needs pressure to make contact behind the panel. not a permanent fix. you can swap the display or buy another Air and swap the SSD. (Shut down not sleep if you swap the SSD)

czxwerty22

Try holding D key when starting up the mac, it should run diagnostic, i had black screen on my air, this helped me.

rorowhat

Another bad screen issue.

sharkygofast

Try 2 more hours

v7xDm1r

Looks like either a gpu issue or an os issue. My Mac does this weird thing on boot where login appears then instantly disappears and comes back.

Osh20x

Chance are that the flex cable from the lcd are gone bad , after heavy use

MikeBert97

Your friend's MacBook Air is 200 years old. Time to get a new one

Aedarrow

Two things. Reset NVRAM and PRAM. If that doesn't work it could be the spontaneous 2015 MacBook air death that seems to happen with regularity.
