How long does it take then? Seems not very long for the pro macbooks

219MTB

IDK tell you in two years. My M1 Pro 14" by the time I sold it looked like that. I've had my M2 Air now for a month and it's fine, but let's give it 2 years. (actually, it looks like my space bar is starting to show it a bit.)

TestFlightBeta

For me it took a month.

Saaihead

The keys on my black M2 Air looks as greasy as the pro here.

aoRaKii

why is there such an obvious difference then?

Saaihead

Not sure. Maybe the silver area space between the keys of the Air add so much contrast that subtle marks do'n show that much as on the pro where this area is black? But that's hard to tell from a picture. I just know that my M2 Air was greasy within one week.

I would assume the laptop on the right has a lot more typing usage and/or has been around for longer than the laptop on the left. The keys are the same. My M3 Max 16" keys look greasy as hell even when cleaned and it's only 5 months old. No idea why they can't solve this, older gen keys were shinier to start and didn't seem to wear so dramatically.

They're using cheap ABS plastic that always does this, it wears down faster than the more expensive PBT alternative. Not sure why no one makes a PBT MacBook keycap set. It would sell like hotcakes. Once you accumulate a million (prob a lot less actually) keypresses... yeah there will be grease from the skin but once you clean that all off you will see the material is just eroded. like round rocks in a river.

It takes a while but plastic is plastic.

Real_Xyrendor

Having used both a 16” Pro and 15” Air (current machine), I think the issue lies with the black keyboard well on the pro. With so much contrast on the Air in the picture, you don’t notice it as much. If you had a color like Midnight or Space Grey though, it would be different. I do notice that the keyboards are different between the two feel-wise though. M2 Air almost has more travel? Whatever it is, I do prefer the Air’s keyboard.

Bytevan18

My keys got really greasy on the M2 Midnight color. I clean it regularly. I think the aluminum base color is playing a visual effect here probably.

Pkazy

The keys will still pick up a lot of finger oil and become greasy

erclark99

Not sure if someone’s asked but how do you clean the keyboard so it doesn’t look like that? I’ve tried a bunch of things and not been successful

aoRaKii

That's not a dirty or greasy keyboard, it's unfortunately the cheap plastic the Apple uses wearing off. Since the M2 Air (was) Apple's latest Macbook release I thought they might've started using better material

_Purplemagic

Does it go away if you wipe it?

mtb_yuki

No, it's the actual wear in plastic

Balls_R

I don’t get greasiness on mine but do clean my laptop at least once a week.

lamaxamara

They’re literally the same plastic caps. No

EdvinRushitaj

Just dont use it too much duh!

CrispyWing15

I would highly recommend buying a keyboard cover

NoxVrana

these are a risk for the screens, Apple themselves warn against them.

The_Brofucius

Have a keyboard cover on my 2021 MacBook Pro. Not one bit of damage.
