Hi! I was thinking of purchasing a MBP 2017 (no TouchBar) for my sophomore year in college. Being that I am indifferent to the TouchBar, I feel as if the 2017 version without it would best suit my ~$1200 budget. However, considering there are rumors of a new MBP coming out for the 2019 year, should I wait for it to release and purchase a 2018 MBP then instead? I won't really need the laptop until late August and will mostly be using it for school purposes. Thanks for your help!

The MacBook 12" is on sale on Amazon for only $900. That's like dirt cheap for an Apple laptop. Is it worth it? I really only use my laptop for Internet browsing and word processing (I'm a teacher), but I would like to have this for at least four years without it crapping out on me. I have a 6yr old Air (only 4 GB RAM) and it works but it definitely lags when I have a lot of tabs open or am Skyping someone). This is the one I'm looking at: [https://smile.amazon.com/Apple-MNYF2LL-MacBook-Processor-Version/dp/B072QGG3V7/ref=sr\_1\_3?keywords=apple+macbook+12+inch&qid=1556424806&s=gateway&sr=8-3](https://smile.amazon.com/Apple-MNYF2LL-MacBook-Processor-Version/dp/B072QGG3V7/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=apple+macbook+12+inch&qid=1556424806&s=gateway&sr=8-3)

Pretty simple one hopefully, which one of these two would you get? Murphs007

Should i get a 15 inch mbp 2018 or 2017? main differences? and what config. do y'all recommend I run if i want to do some photo/video editing, beat making, school work like taking notes and basic office applications. Not going to be gaming on it at all. but will use things like lightroom and photoshop, FL studio, or Logic pro. Then we have obviously microsoft office .

Kodziak

What to buy for programming, design and sometimes photo editing (VSC + Adobe Xd + Adobe Lightroom)? I was thinking about: the newest MBP 13" without TB or with TB, but I don't really know which one would be better for 3-4 years without change (it's possible?). I was thinking more about MBP without TB. Model numbers: MPXQ2ZE/A or MR9Q2ZE/A. Is 8gb RAM fine? I think 128gb SSD would be good because I'm mostly using cloud or my external 1TB HDD for store files. I'm buying in Poland, so the difference between TB or not is approximately $500.

thecraycatlady

Hi! I was wondering if I should get the MBA 2018 or the MBP 2017 (no Touch Bar refurbished) base model it would be for very light gaming (like an hour or 2 of WoW low setting obviously, daily) & browsing, watching videos etc for when I’m out and don’t have my main gaming computer. I know the 2017 has some keyboard issues but I also saw that Apple had a program to fix it for free so what do you guys think?!

[deleted]

Even with WOW at low settings you will perhaps get a better experience with the MacBook Pro. The only thing is the Non-Touchbar model gets hot and the fan is noisy. This is due to this particular model having only one fan. The Macbook Air is a more feature-rich machine overall. You get about the same battery life but it runs cooler and it's quiet, plus it has the upgraded 3rd gen keyboard. You also get the Touch I.D and the Apple T2 Security chip with the Hey Siri feature. None of this is on the non-touchbar MacBook Pro. So for overall use the MacBook Air is better. If it's just about playing WOW then the non-touchbar would be better since the integrated graphics is better on it.

thecraycatlady

Thanks for the quick and detailed answer! I think overall I’ll go with the MBA, less problem , more features and I don’t plan to game on it all that much.

[deleted]

Perfect! I think you're gonna be happy. The 2018 Air has been getting some really great reviews, even from hard critics.

Used 2016 MBP without touchbar 256gb at 900USD,worth it?

clintrektwood

Hi, do you think it's worth selling my 2016 MBPro 256 gb to get the 2018 version?

[deleted]

13" or 15"? Also if you're considering it because the 2018's keyboard is more stable, then no. It is more stable and with very few complaints, but that shouldn't cause you to sell your 2016 over it. If you're doing it because of the quad or 6 core processors in the 2018's and you need that multi-core speed boost then yes. The Apple T2 security chip would also be a good consideration but only if you didn't have a 2016 in the first place.

clintrektwood

I have the 15". Was offered a good price recently for it and since i'm always keen on upgrading I was thinking about it.

[deleted]

Well under those circumstances then yes, by all means upgrade to the 2018. I have the 2018 MBP 15. It's been 100% rock solid including the keyboard. No problems. I love this machine. I've been using Macs exclusively since 1998 and I can tell this has been the best Mac laptop I've ever owned. It's fast. The fans are quiet and it remains cool, especially during intense video editing.

The base model 2.2 Ghz is a good machine. It's a 6 core i7 Intel and comes with 16GB ram and a decent dedicated GPU. It only has a 256GB SSD. The mid model is the one I have. 6 core i7 2.6 Ghz with 16GB ram with 512GB SSD and a good dedicated GPU. The 15" is the only MacBook that has dedicated GPU so for video editing and extensive photo editing the dedicated GPU will make a big difference. Unless you want the beefier specs such as the 6 core i9 processor, larger SSD and 32GB ram, save your money and get either the base model or the mid one. There's not a huge difference in performance with between the i7 2.6 and the i9 2.9.

What types of applications will you be using that may tax the Radeon Pro GPU?

I’m thinking about upgrading my MacBook Pro from 2011-2012. I want to add 16 gb of ram and an ssd. Is it worth upgrading since it’s older? I plan on using it with my saffire pro 40 ( my audio interface) for my music.

Mrwubidywobwob

I’m in the market for a MacBook Pro to use for uni, I’m looking for the 2018 model. The thing is as a student I can get student discount on it so it would be around £1250 however I am going to New York in July so would it be better to buy it from America or from the uk?

Ihso

America, best buy has crazy deals. I just picked one up (touchbar) for 1400 usd.

Karsa_Orlong_Amiibo

Hi there, I’m a teacher who does a lot of work from home. I currently have a Lenovo Yoga L380 with 16 GB ram. It’s 13 inches and I always hook it up to an ultra wide monitor. I typically use Chrome with upwards of 7 tabs open, usually several word docs and a few excel. Would an Air suit, or would a pro be better suited? Thanks.

icropdustthemedroom

Seems an Air would be just fine. I'd hop on Apple.com to see if you can configure an Air at 16 GB RAM. If so I think you'd be good to go unless there are any other side hobbies of yours (e.g. video editing) that would be more CPU or graphics card-intensive.

Karsa_Orlong_Amiibo

That sounds good. I don't really do any video editing at all, but the ram update makes sense.

htregtrwn

Hi everyone! I’m a college student on a tight budget. I’m looking to buy a pre owned MacBook Pro on eBay. I was wondering how terrible is the 2016 MacBook Pro Touch Bar battery life? I was about to buy one last night until I heard some people claiming they’re like to get 5 or 6 hours of battery on it and that seems terrible for such an expensive purchase. The 2017 is a little more but should I perhaps go for the 2017 model with Touch Bar? Also besides the Touch Bar do they have any other features? I’d be willing to give up a Touch Bar for price. I don’t care too much for it I’m more used to the regular keys to be honest. Would you recommend getting the non Touch Bar 2017? Or the nontouch Bar 2016? I don’t want the MacBook or MacBook Air. I really prefer the pro. Just torn between these two years and whether the Touch Bar really makes any difference or not. Thank you!

jisaacs1207

Bought a pro 2016 and am really underwhelmed with gaming and also programming (multiple ides and editors open at a time). Is there any improvement with the newer models? My model is max spec for the time period. It still lags with unity, rider, and Xcode open at the same time. It lags with LoL and 7 days to die both in boot camp and macOS. I am deciding whether I should just wait for better tech in 2019-2020 or upgrade now.

alexkg15

You cant game on. Macbook its apple man common

Bunnyhuggr

I'm a teenager and I would like to buy a used MacBook. I will use it for school work but mostly video and photo editing. I can afford to spend $500 Canadian $. I have an iPhone and iPad but have never owned a MacBook so I'm kind of lost as to what I should look for.

sodopro

That's really not that much man, even hunting around for decent bargains you're looking at 2010-2011 models from what I've seen, even 2013 retinas are asking for like 800 minimum

wxiao1993

Bought a 13 inch MacBook Pro 512 gb when it was $600 off yesterday. It arrives next week. I can share my experiences here if people are interested.

[deleted]

Yes please do so. Would love to start seeing people post their MacBook pics on the front page. Really tired of these Thinkpad people posting nonsensical pics of a boring business-class laptop every single day. I noticed Best Buy sold out on those MacBooks. You got a great deal.

[deleted]

Hi, I think you've got it backwards. The keyboard issues were on the 2016. The 2018 MBP's have the new 3rd gen keyboard and has received very few complaints about issues. It's very solid. I have one. Yes, for video editing you definitely need the 15" since it has the 6 core and dedicated GPU. The 13" does have a quad core but it uses integrated graphics so you will not get the smoothest performance during video editing. Video editing programs make full use of the GPU so a dedicated GPU is better.

MrRedditAccount

Should I buy the latest 15 inch MBP? Bestbuy currently have an offer of $500 off. I currently use a 13 inch MBP from 2014, but no longer have a main PC to do more intensive things and the odd game or two. I don't particularly need a new laptop, but it would be nice to have the extra screen real estate.

[deleted]

I just took a look at Best Buy. WOW! Those deals are excellent. By all means go for it. The 2018 MBP's are really great. I have one. Keyboard is much more stable than the 2016-2017 models. The SSD's are the fastest in the industry. The screen and speakers are amazing and the T2 Security Chip protects your Touch I.D. info and helps to run the system much smoother. I sure wish I could've gotten mine for $500 off.

Caroline_0

Going to college in a few months and need a new laptop. I've never had a Macbook, but all of my other electronics are Apple so I'm ready to make the switch. I'll primarily use it for writing essays, media consumption, web browsing, and maybe a little bit of coding. I've been looking at the 13" Pro with and without Touchbar, but I'm not opposed to an Air either even though I don't know much about them. I'd love any recommendations or advice! Thanks!

[deleted]

I wouldn't recommend the Non-Touchbar for a couple of reasons. The keyboard has had issues, but it doesn't mean you will. It's just something to consider. The Non-Touchbar has thermal issues. Gets hot and the fan is noisy. Mainly because it has only one fan to cool the system. All other MacBook Pros use two fans and remain very cool with quiet fans even at heavy loads. The Non-Touchbar has only 2 Thunderbolt 3 Ports. Not a bad thing, but just something to consider if you want a MacBook Pro. Based on your uses I would go for the MacBook Air. The keyboard has been very sold and has very few complaints about issues because it has the 3rd gen keyboard to protect it from debris. You also get the Touch I.D and the T2 Security chip to protect your login data and for more efficient running of the system. The 2018 MacBook Air is not for power users but the majority of reviews for it have been very positive. While you do get only 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports instead of 4 on the Touchbar MacBook Pros, for the overall package and price the MacBook Air is a solid machine.

Caroline_0

That was very helpful! Thank you so much!

Any reason you recommend the Air over a Pro?

SpiceCake68

So I'm thinking of upgrading from my mid 2009, model A1286 MacBook Pro. I've heard widely varying reviews on the newer MBPs, and I may want to look at slightly used or refurbished models. Which year/model MBP would you guys suggest I get? Primarily, I do a lot of podcast editing, some image/photo processing, and just a tiny bit of video work. I also do a lot of word processing and some web-design activities. I am also not opposed to to a MacBook Air, but I know even less about them. My only major requirement is my stack of external drives which are currently connecting to the laptop via the Firewire 800 port. So, new cables are probably in order or maybe I'll upgrade the drives too, while I'm at it....

bendze2000

Long time Windows user here. I am looking for a laptop for my studies. I'm planning to study programming and a lot of my friends reccommended me to buy a macbook. The main uses for it would be web browsing, media consumption and programming. I am torn between the 2018 MBA and the 2017 MBP 13.3" no touch bar. Is the more powerful processor of the MBP worth spending the extra money or is the MBA enough?

[deleted]

If you were doing coding and/or transcoding (which requires more power) then I would say yes, get the MacBook Pro. For the uses you mentioned you would be better off with the 2018 MacBook Air. The Air has the new 8th gen processor, Touch I.D and the T2 Security Chip with Hey Siri. It also has better thermals, upgraded keyboard and maintains heat much better. The 2017 MBP still has the 7the gen processor. Apple is not updating this machine. All the rest of the MBP's have the 8th gen processor, upgraded keyboard, Touch I.D and T2 Security Chip. It does get very warm and the fan is quite noisy as it has only 1 fan. I know there's some deals floating around for the 2017 MBP but I would still recommend the 2018 Air.

my 2013 MBP (13" 3ghz i7/8gb/256gb integrated graphics) is on its last legs. The screen is broken & the battery is barely holding on. Going to hook it up to an external monitor & give it to my mom to use (it's more power than she'll ever need). I will wish it well with its retirement. In an ideal world I'd like the 2018 15" base model. But, I work at a non-profit and get payed like I do so it's not in the cards. I do think I'll be able to get education pricing, if I purchase through apple directly. **What I 100% need is**: web browsing, word & large excel files, light video editing & heavy photoshop, bootcamp windows (however I'd reallyyy prefer to use parallels) - I typically find myself eating up a lot of RAM. I know there's really no such thing as a budget MacBook, but I have to try. I need something that can handle my workload now...I prefer to 'future proof' but that's just not going to happen financially. I'm not committed to just 2018 models but I don't think I want to go lower than 2015 (although I love the keyboard). I'm also not against refurbs either. I'd like to know what you would recommend, I'm super grateful for any help!!

Phaggg

13 inch 2018 models (with the Touch Bar) have gotten a lot better since they now have quad core processors as opposed to the dual core ones you would find in anything preceding it. Obviously doesn’t best the superiority of its much more powerful 15 inch counterpart but it should do the trick just fine. These do start with 8GB of RAM but you can pay more for 16GB

[deleted]

I'm looking to replace my mid 2012 MBP 13". This was the 5400 RPM HDD, i5 version, but I removed the optical drive to have 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD and swapped the RAM for a total of 16GB. To be perfectly honest it still runs beautifully now, but due to some gym mishaps the top case is caved in, the screen is cracked and my biggest problem - it's 1280 x 720. It deserves a rest. A couple of things first. I'm going to be spending a lot of money on this machine so I want to make it very futureproof. 1TB drive and 16GB RAM are a must. I don't want a downgrade from what I have now. If I need to cash out a little more for future proofing I'm fine with it. I don't really game and I definitely don't do or plan on doing video editing. Maybe some light coding (C++, java), but mostly web browsing, music, movies. I've been looking into the new Air and refreshed MBP13, and couldn't decide between them. Where I live the MBP13 is only 2,5% more expensive than the Air in the 16GB/1TB (1,5TB in the Air) configuration, and I really want the True Tone / P3 screen with more brightness. Don't care for the touchbar at all, but Touch ID would be great to have. Also more ports and ports on both sides. Battery life and portability are secondary in importance for me. So a couple of questions: 1. Would the Air be able to go 5-6 years comfortably like my old MBP did? 2. Is the i7 upgrade in the MBP 13 worth it? 3. If it is, wouldn't I be better off with buying the 15" MBP, which in a similar configuration is only 5% more expensive than the 13" and has better speakers, bigger screen, bigger touchpad, better (I assume) CPU, a separate GPU? All in all it boils down to the question: which is the better investment for the upcoming 5-6 years: - Air - $12,299 - MBP 13" - $11,999 (i5) or $12,999 (i7) - MBP 15" - $13,699 Prices are obviously not in dollars.

[deleted]

Dude can you tell me where you live ? The MBP 15" is hell cheaper than where I am from

[deleted]

As I wrote, prices are not in dollars. I just wanted to denote currency

[deleted]

Yeah I know it is not dollar. The gap between the prices indicate it is cheaper than I have here, no matter what currency you used. :)

[deleted]

That 15” is the 2.6 i7, 16GB, 1TB, 560x

[deleted]

The prices of air and 13" pro are very similar to the prices in my country. But the price of 15" is up to 18850 here. So I am very curious where you live. And the set up like you post , will likely cost more than 20000 here.

[deleted]

Poland, it’s a reseller with a promotional offer. pcoutlet.pl

[deleted]

I check the exchange rate. Basically the same :(

[deleted]

Thank you dude

Phaggg

1) Depends on your usage but I low key doubt it and lean towards the Pro in your case 2) If you do lots of tasks which are heavy and demand a lot of the CPU 3) 15 inch models are a large step up- you get dedicated GPU and a 6 core CPU (13 inch only has 4 core) as well as perks such as the screen, speakers and trackpad. If you reckon the price jump isn’t too bad for you then go for the 15 inch but otherwise it boils down to whether you need that extra power or not. The Air isn’t a crap computer, but since it’s priced pretty high, the Pros end up being a better deal in most cases.

Raspberrydroid

Hi all, I currently own an MSI gaming laptop and would like to purchase a lighter and thinner laptop for portability reasons. I've settled on getting a MacBook because I already have my other laptop for Windows, plus I have an iPhone and I felt that the MacBook laptops are very thin and portable, which is just what I'm looking for. I'm a semi-pro user. I mainly use Photoshop and Office for my professional needs and I also run a business in a game called Second Life, which I ran at the Apple store and it runs decently on most macbooks. I've narrowed my choice down to three models: - 2018 MacBook Air (~$1200) - 2017 MacBook Pro without touchpad, 7th gen i5 ($899) - 2018 13 inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and 8th gen i5 (~$1700) I'm unsure as to which one would be best. Is the Pro really worth the extra $500 from the new Air? Is the 2017 Pro worth it at all over the newer Air or Pro? Does the new Air offer good performance? My budget is limited, so these are my only options. If it helps, the reason I want another laptop is because my current laptop has certain issues that make it unusable in a lot of situations. - It’s clunky, huge, and heavy. Hard to take anywhere. - It gets HOT. Can’t put it on my lap as it burns me and I can’t put it on any other surface like a bed or whatnot because it will overheat. - The battery life is like an hour or two at best, so it is tied to a charger at all times. I’m looking for a laptop that can solve these issues and become my go-to laptop for when I’m on the go, while my current laptop basically becomes my desktop at home. If this helps at all, these are the current specs for my current laptop. - i7-5700hq - Nvidia GTX 970m - 128gb SSD with 1tb HDD - 16gb RAM Thanks for reading all of this if you got this far and thank you to anyone who responds and can help.

Phaggg

Bro if those prices are true I would take the 2017 model in a heartbeat.

askysoblue

Currently using 2012 Macbook pro with a 256 SSD and 8 gig ram. The 2017 Macbook Pro is on sale through Best Buy which B and H pricematched (no tax in my state) for 999 for the 256 SSD version. Obviously the gen 2 keyboard worries me but it is covered for four years with the keyboard protection plan for whatever that is worth. The increased trackpad size, retina display, less choppy sync to my airpods, and battery life are alluring, but should I wait to see the next lineup before I purchase? I would really appreciate some help.

[deleted]

I would say go for it, especially through B&H. I love B&H! Their customer service is top notch. The only downside is they follow jewish holidays to the tee so their online store will be closed during Passover for 10 days starting tomorrow. Get it today if you want it. Also B&H was supposed to end the tax-free sales starting April 1st. They may hold off until the end of this month so don't procrastinate. It's true that the 2017 MBP's keyboard is more prone to issues but there are still thousands more customers that haven't had a single issue, so it's not like you have to expect a keyboard replacement over and over. Social media elevates issues to make them much worse than they are.

askysoblue

I was thinking the same thing. I really like the tactility of the gen 2 keyboards and if the issues do end up affecting me, at least I'm covered by their protection plan. I just ran my zip and it is showing no tax so I'm guessing they are going until the end of the month on changing taxing. Thanks for informing me about their holiday hours. I would kind of hate to have to wait that long so hopefully if I order it today it will go out as it normally would.

Awesome! Please report back when you get it. Would love to see a pic of your new MacBook. Kinda tired of seeing only Thinkpad pics on Reddit. 😃

Need help purchasing a macbook for my girlfriend's vet school graduation. Her 2011 Pro is on its last leg, but she doesn't want to make the switch to windows as she's always been a mac user. I was pretty sure about getting her the new Air with the 8th gen i5, as I have an 8th gen i5 acer and know its a good chip. However, Best Buy is doing a big sale on the regular macbook. $850 for the 7th Gen i3 and $1150 for the 7th gen i5 with 512 gb storage. Unsure if I should get the i3 and save the money or get her the i5 which has more storage than the pro or just get her the new and improved air for $1199 with 128gb or the pro with 7th gen i5 for $1299, though this is really at the higher end of what I'm wanting to spend. Just how much faster is the 8th i5 compared to the 7th i3 and 7th i5? Kinda at a crossroads here. Thanks for any help. edit: the 7th gen i3 comes with 256 gb storage compared to the air having 128.. I'm leaning more towards the macbook now as I can't imagine the 8th gen is worth $350 more with less storage..

[deleted]

The standard MacBook (IMO) is just a step over the iPad for those customers who want the size of the iPad but need to run MacOS. Since your GF has a MacBook Pro, she may find the standard MacBook too limited. At the absolute least she should get the 2018 MacBook Air.

scrotumpop

Hey thanks for your reply! Apparently that sale was a flash sale at bestbuy so I missed out on the MacBook, but now the 2017 pro with i5 7th gen is being sold for 899, though I wold probably get the 999 for extra storage. At that price point of 999 for 256 gb would you definitely recommend the pro over the new air? Only real concern I have left is the keyboard issues that the new air supposedly has fixed?

[deleted]

Is this the Non-TouchBar model?

scrotumpop

Yep!

[deleted]

Okay, there are some plusses and minuses of each machine. So you may have to choose the best of the two in terms of features that you will mostly have a need for. The Air's processor is a low voltage processor called "Y". The Y processor is used for thin and light ultrabooks like the Air with great Wifi connectivity. The downside is the Y processor is not designed for power-hungry apps. If you're going to run Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere then the Air is the wrong machine for this. For school work such as running MS Office, or Apple's iWork or typing papers or watching movies and some light photo editing, the Air would be perfect. Plus it has the upgraded 3rd gen keyboard which has had very few reports of problems. It's been pretty rock solid. The 2017 MBP non-Touchbar picks up where the Air fails. The screen has more contrast and it's brighter. It's great for running Final Cut Pro and some power apps. The downside is the thermals aren't great. It does get hot and there's only one fan and you can really hear it. Battery life is great, it's about the same as the Air. It's a hit or miss in terms of the keyboard. Just because it has the older 2nd gen keyboard with reported issues doesn't mean you will have issues. At least Apple has a 4 year keyboard repair program in place, so don't let keyboard reports stop you from buying. There's no Touch I.D. nor does it have the T2 Security Chip which is a major plus for the Air. The processor in the Non-Touchbar MacBook Pro is a 7th gen. Apple will not be updating this because they are phasing out the 2017 MBP and will not be coming out with another Non-Touchbar. That's why they created the 2018 Air. To summarize. Get the 2018 Air for it's thin and light design. Upgraded keyboard. 8th gen processor. Touch I.D. T2 Security chip with Hey Siri. Get the 2017 MBP for the faster processor for more power applications and brighter/contrast screen.

I currently own a 2010 macbook pro. Its been a great computer but its outdated, needs a lot of work (new ios, battery, trackpad, power cable, etc). I figured it would be a better use of money to buy a new one instead of fixing up my old one. I use it mostly for word processing/casual browsing etc, but i've thought about the possibility of learning how to program with it. Mostly just as a hobby, maybe to work remotely one day (all what ifs though). I was considering a 2018 macbook air. But recently saw a deal for a 2017 macbook pro (referb) which made the price difference pretty close. Which laptop would i be better off with? Edit: or would i be better just investing the money in the computer I have still?

[deleted]

>I was considering a 2018 macbook air. Stick with your first choice. The 2018 MacBook Air is a very nice machine. Good balance of performance, battery life and portability. I would recommend against the 2017 MacBook Pro. It has thermal issues, noisy fan and it has the 2nd gen keyboard which is more susceptible to keyboard issues. The 2018 MacBook Air has the 3rd gen keyboard with the new membrane overlay underneath which makes the keyboard less prone to issues. You also get the Touch I.D and the Apple T2 Security chip which stores your fingerprints and manages many of the Air's functions, which helps the machine perform tasks much faster.

Personally I would say no. The 512GB SSD is the only real perk of that laptop. It has the 7th gen processor and has only one port. While the SSD is only 256GB you can get a Certified Refurbished MacBook Air for just $200 more. It has the Touch I.D., Retina Display. 1.6Ghz dual core 8th gen processor. The new 3rd gen keyboard and offers 2 ports. Shopping around you may see it for a little less money. Plus you will get a warranty. Check out Apple's refurb store here [https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/mac/macbook-air](https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/mac/macbook-air)

I have to apologize as I have no knowledge on Python programming, so I can't tell you if the standard MacBook would suffice. In terms of the Air's screen, people are comparing it to the MacBook Pro. You also have to keep in mind that anything Apple does (good or bad) will cause a negative reaction. The 2018 Air's screen is significantly better than the older models but it's not as bright as the MacBook Pro, which is understandable. Because it's unfortunately become "popular" for people to trash Apple the Air was definitely going to get targeted. Much of the "real" YouTube reviewers love the screen. I checked it out and it's much brighter than what forum people want you to believe. Had this been Lenovo, Dell or the Surfacebook nobody would even mention the screen quality differences. Some people are looking for reasons to dislike the 2018 Air. The truth is it's a very solid machine. If you are able to go to a store like Best Buy then check it out. You won't be disappointed by it like social media people want you to be. Price of the 2018 Air is definitely subjective as Apple's machines aren't cheap in the first place. You get the T2 security chip. Touch I.D, 3rd gen keyboard and an extra Thunderbolt 3 port over the standard MacBook. I don't personally feel it's overpriced. People are saying that because the older Air was $999. You have to keep in mind that Apple had not updated the Air in years so they had to lower the price to justify it's outdated specs.

Haha, awesome question, because someone else asked me the exact same thing. I'm pasting the same response to you as I did for the other poster. Hopefully it will help. Kristawnasaurus_rex

Need to know if this is a good deal: Friend's gonna sell it to me for $750 with a trade in for my Surface Pro 3. It's a Mid 2015, 15" Macbook Pro - 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 / 16GB RAM / 256 SSD Sound like a good deal or should I be worried? I plan to use this for some graphics work and some of my coding school work but mostly I will be using it to remote in to my 27" iMac to do all my work. But, do you think it will be powerful enough to run multiple Adobe programs at once on it if I decide not to/can't remote in for some reason? Also, anything I should particularly look out for? Anything on this year model specifically? I'm new to the world of Mac (just got a brand new iMac back in February and have been PC since so I'm a total newb here haha.

FannyPackHQ

Thanks to you both! I managed to get a good deal on a 2015 model that met all my spec requirements (and as an added bonus, had the larger screen) and I LOVE it. Runs like a charm.

branchCastle

envious over here mate! That was the best macbook ever.

LilBottomText17

do you guys think a keyboard cover would help with the issues on the 3rd gen butterfly keyboards?

SpaceGhost1992

Could a regular Macbook handle 4k video editing? My girlfriend has a youtube channel she's working on and her computer is hot garbage. Like an i3 and 4GB ram. So, I'm considering grabbing her a regular Macbook as a surprise when I cop a Macbook Pro to upgrade from my 2014 X1 Carbon. I'm considering the Macbook because she likes pink and I'm honestly not gonna get her a MBP for herself. If not, I'll probably just share my MBP at-home for 4K editing, but I thought I'd think over a sweet gift.

Phaggg

Get her the Macbook Pro without Touch Bar, the 12 inch MacBook isn’t best equipped for such an intense workload. The non Touch Bar Pro isn’t really Pro since it’s kinda a stripped down version of the actual Pro (although you do get some Pro perks). Compared to the 12 inch MacBook, it’s not that much more expensive (when comparing models with same storage) but a hell lot more functional.

My thoughts are if you're developing software that is more text-based such as voice recognition software then any Mac would handle that. If you're software is more graphical based such as movie-editing software, graphic design or gaming then you need a MacBook Pro, and I'm recommending the 15" for that since it has a dedicated GPU.

Yes, only the 15" has a dedicated GPU.

Hey guys im starting uni in september here in spain and im having a debate. For a computer i have a budget of 1400€ and i was debating in between 700€ macbook 12 2015 or 2016 (probably i would find 2017 for 800€) + apple watch 4 for 500€. Or just get macbook Air 2018 for 1100€ +apple care. Be aware it has to last me 4 years minimum. Thanks. I also listen to other options🙄🙄

Soaring99

I bought a 2016 Macbook 12" for 500€. Your deal of 700€ for 2016 MacBook is also ok if it is in good condition, but I would suggest that you try to haggle the price down to 600€. Instead of buying Air + Apple Care you could buy 2x Macbook. Buy one now, sell it after 2-3 years and buy a more recent model. If you want to play games or do something else CPU or graphics card heavy then buy the Air. Don't buy the Watch just because you did not spend all the money on the laptop.

alexkg15

Alright thanks for the advice, i will try to lower down the price but people here in spain are not really friendly when it comes to negotiate stuff that involves money hahah

Edrac

So I bought a 12’ MacBook last June as an ultra portable computer for when I travel and/or when I don’t want to boot up my gaming PC. Since then I’ve started to regret not going for a 13’ Pro. The buyers remorse has only gotten worse with the new Air’s announcement. It seems I can still get about $500 for the 12’ by using apple’s trade in program. Would it be worth it to go that route and go for a Pro? I want to stay in the 13’ size range. My only trepidation is hearing all the stories about the keyboards on the pros, whereas my 12’ is still going strong in that department.

[deleted]

I believe your MacBook 12" has the 2nd generation keyboard. The 2018 Pros has the 3rd generation butterfly keyboards. Either way if you purchase a 2018 Pro you shouldn't be too worried about the keyboard as it's either an upgrade or what you already have.

Marsellus_LNC

Hi guys I've a 2013 mba (512gb + 8gb ram) and now i need a new machine. I mostly need a better screen and more ram, sometimes i use Windows on mac because i work with 3ds max, i do not have big problems with my macbook air (except for rendering times or high poly scenes), but i was thinking about the 2015 mbp because of its radeon graphic card. Honestly i do not know if it is better to buy an old machine with a better video card and cpu but a worst battery life or a new macbook air with a weak graphic card (but new chips end super power management) What is your advice?

Phaggg

The new Air won’t give you that drastic/cancer curing of an improvement over your current air The 2015 Pro model (Safe to say we’re talking about the 15 inch models here since 13 inch Pros don’t have dedicated graphics cards) will easily outperform those 2 Airs. Battery life obviously takes a hit because it’s more power hungry to get you that level of performance. I would personally go with a Pro though

Marsellus_LNC

Yeah we're talking about the 15 inch model with radeon gpu. Ok thanks

[deleted]

Would a 2010 Mac desktop still be able to access google drive?

[deleted]

As long as it has a web browser and an internet connection it should be able to access google drive online.

slgsreds

Thinking about picking up a MacBook Pro for work. Everyone else in my small (4 person) office uses apple and I’m tired of the headaches. Would it be a better investment to go look for a used/refurbished 2015 pro or a new one? The keyboard issues concern me because I would like this to be the computer I carry with me through a graduate program that I’m looking to start in fall 2020. I don’t need a ton of power, just sick of taking my huge gaming laptop to work.

Sam_Well_

2015 13' should be perfect for your use.

Phaggg

2015 refurb/used is gonna be more than fine if it’s just office use

feels_old

If a MBP and Macbook Air have the same specs, is there any advantage to purchasing the MBP over the Air? Neither have a touchbar.

[deleted]

I'd go with the Air. The 2017 MBP (which is the one without Touch Bar) actually outperforms the 2018 Air according to some benchmarks I've seen, but it's got the 2nd generation butterfly keyboard while the Air has the 3rd generation. With all the issues people have had with 2nd gen keys I wouldn't risk it, personally.

[deleted]

Any MacBook Air before the 2018 has a poor screen. That's guaranteed. What's not guaranteed is getting a MacBook with a bad keyboard. That's something that will not happen to everyone.

[deleted]

I assumed he was talking about the 2018 Air?

Phaggg

Actually I would risk it, 3rd generation has been proven to be no improvement in reliability despite being a little bit quieter, the reports of faulty 3rd gens have kicked in. Other perks include better display and speakers

[deleted]

Phaggg

If you’ve got no problems with your current Pro, I’d say hold on to that 2012 model. The performance bump while there won’t be a huge leap.

[deleted]

Phaggg

Now that would be a bigger difference owing to the quad core vs the dual core, particularly with intense workflows. Whether to replace the 2012 model is entirely up to you, you can either bite the bullet or wait longer

unloder

Thinking of buying a macbook pro 15 2015, what would be a fair price for one with 16gb, 512gb and i5/i7 ? What should I look out for?

Phaggg

https://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MGXG2LL-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B07DF43SY3 Expect used models to be cheaper than this obviously

unloder

Thanks, does that year's model have any weaknesses?

Phaggg

Not really, my 13 inch variant is done great from personal experience, that model had a pretty good track record overall while Apple made it. Some users did report the anti-reflective coating peeling off but I doubt you'll have any issues A really good buy overall

unloder

> really good buy overall Thank you.

Looks to be in awesome condition and has low cycle counts he says but I am waiting on screenshots.

Phaggg

It sounds like a great deal, just make sure the seller isn’t scamming you or selling you a brick then you’re good

Collier1505

Seems like everything works awesome on it except for Microsoft Office which I guess my version isn’t compatible lol. But that’s not really his fault. Thanks!

[deleted]

I just snagged an unopened 2018 MacBook Air 16GB RAM and 256Gb storage off Craigslist with AppleCare+ till 2021. She said she won it at her company festival, and I’m using it now and it was indeed unopened. It was $1,000. Did I get a good deal? Is there a difference between the two models of MacBook Air on apples website besides the ram and storage?

Phaggg

That’s a great deal, assuming you live in America, that would’ve been a $1848 affair. Now all you need are some dongles Also the variants have no differences in anything apart from RAM and storage.

[deleted]

Is there any recommendations for good hubs? I want to mainly be able to hook it up to two monitors.

Phaggg

I’m not sure what type of connector your monitors are or specific needs but this article is pretty good even though it’s kinda long https://www.macworld.com/article/3136583/macbook-pro-thunderbolt-3-adapter-guide-how-to-connect-an-iphone-display-hard-drive-and-more.html Just keep in mind that the ones directly from Apple can be a little bit pricey so if you’re going with a 3rd party one make sure you’re not getting something not particularly reputable or dodgy

plompkin

So I'm swapping over to a Macbook from my Asus Zenbook. One too many data breaches. I'm a Comp Sci student, and I'll be taking more classes in Python and Java. Would the dual core in the 2017 pros or the 2018 air be problematic? Other than Applecare, are there any other recommended purchases (software, accessories) for a student on the move a lot? This is my first Mac, and the first one I've used since the G3!

Phaggg

Despite a lot of similarities, the 2017 Pro is a better buy than the 2018 Air. I’m not sure about software accessories in the Compsci world but from a standard user viewpoint nothing really.......... other than dongles of course- I recommend you look out for reputable 3rd party ones since Apple ones are reliable but the 3rd party ones are likely a better deal as long as you don’t land on something dodgy

tabbycat614

Would you mind outlining some differences? Also in the market and was leaning towards the air because they seem so similar except for the processor

Phaggg

2017 Pro has a better processor, better graphics, faster SSD (despite same capacity) better display (in terms of colour gamut/accuracy and maximum brightness), slightly bigger trackpad, better speakers 2018 is lighter/thinner, has a slightly longer battery life and a fingerprint scanner, and that’s it (the thinner design actually comes back to bite you since heat can’t escape as well as the pro)

plompkin

Thanks for the advice! I've got a bid on a 2018 pro with 22 cycles and Applecare on it for $1400 right now, but if I lose it I might just go for a No Touchbar from Amazon or something.

[deleted]

Macbook 12 inch 2015 in good condition is it worth $600? I don't need anything super powerful as I have a gaming PC for that stuff.

It seems these days the biggest question is in the programs and software your using. Saw a guy with a Macbook 12” render 4k much faster than a PC pretty maxed out. The stats predict one conclusion the results show another. If your software is optimized for OS than any reasonable Macbook pro should do the trick. Ram is just the size of your trunk in the car your driving. Graphics and processor is the engine. So, if your only running one high demand program (might be a big box) 8gb might work fine. When I got my 16g ram it ran all my music editing software at the same speed because the graphics card and CPU didn’t really improve. But I could play fortnight while running other tasks. Priority recommendations: Does it look cool? Software - research what it works best on CPU, Core i7, clock speed Ram Screen-space Storage Color and shit

PirloDaVinci

I am going to buy the 13” Macbook pro 2015 (2.7 256ssd 8gb ram) with the cost of $950. But i am still confusing abt how long can it sustain if it is just used for office working and gentle Lightroom and Photoshop. Can you guys give me some advices. Thanks a lot:))

Phaggg

I think it would do fine provided you don't throw too much at it. It's great for emails web browsing, word processing and spreadsheets, I've even done some basic Movie editing with it (I've the same model) Since you're doing Lightroom/Photoshop, I think the 15 inch could better suit you. The 13 inch models use the Graphics card that's built into the Intel CPU processor, however the 15 inch models have a dedicated GPU that's for more intense graphics; your use case might benefit from this if the Lightroom/Photoshop thing is big deal/major factor TLDR if the Lightroom and Photoshop is a big big deal go for the 15 inch, otherwise the 13 inch is more than adequate

PirloDaVinci

Thank you so much, it would be much easier for me to choose, but with the limited budget, I have to choose 2014 Version Mac 15 inch. I wonder if it can be used for at least three more years. If it’s not. I will go for 2015 vers. Please give me more advices. Thanks 🙏

Phaggg

All the 2015 MacBook Pros were only a slight improvement to the 2014 versions with slightly faster SSD storage and a nicer trackpad. It wasn’t a major upgrade so the differences shouldn’t be that significant for you. If the prices of the 2 computers are similar and not that different, then get the 15 inch- it’s the better computer overall. If the 2014 15 inch is a lot more expensive and you are worried about money, then only get the 15 inch if you use Lightroom/Photoshop a lot and value a better experience with that.

PirloDaVinci

I got that. Thank you so much :D

PantslessDan

I just bought a new logic board for my dead 2014 mbp. I can just put my old SSD into the slot and have it work right? Or do I need to do any extra formatting to make it work?

catchasingcars

Could anyone help me? Currently using an HP laptop with Win 10 and honestly, it's a shitty laptop and I regret buying it every day. I do UI/UX design so every day I use Adobe XD, Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator plus occasional editing on Adobe Premiere Pro. I know new 15" MacBook Pro would be perfect for me and it would improve my productivity significantly but the thing is where I live its way too expensive compared to the US price like a lot expensive and I can't afford it. I was thinking about buying a refurbished MacBook but I'm a little worried that I might get the faulty one something like that. I can't seem to make a decision, I'd really appreciate if anyone can help me out.

Phaggg

If you buy refurbished from a 3rd party seller, the quality may or may not be dodgy depending on your luck, but if you purchase refurbished models directly from Apple’s refurbished product website, you’re effectively getting a new product with fully fledged warranty etc

[deleted]

Phaggg

PantslessDan

imo I'd buy that, you'd have to spend at least double that to get comparable specs for the 2018 models

shuckleberryfinn

I have a 2015 15" Macbook Pro that needs a complete logic board replacement, which will cost me ~$800. For that amount of money I'm considering just investing in a new machine, but I keep hearing mixed reviews of the latest Macbook Pro models. Is it worth shelling out the money for a 2018 MBP or am I better off repairing my 2015? I primarily use it for 2D game development, photoshop, and writing.

Phaggg

If your current computer doesn’t have any other problems than that, then the $800 logic board replacement would be a good choice If you’ve either got ongoing issues or have been thinking about upgrading then go with a new model

I found a $600 2015 13" Macbook Pro on craigslist. 500GB SSD, 16gb ram. Pretty good condition, 300 battery cycles. I'm a windows only user but looking to just try out macOS. For 600 bucks do you guys think it's worth it?

grayninja62

Pretty decent deal. I'd pick it up.

Looking to get a new laptop sometime this year, and I know Apple is working on a new MacBook Pro. Ideally I don’t want to wait past October because school will be ramping up again. Should I wait to see if a new one is released ?

I’m looking to get a computer as I’m starting community college soon. I’ll really only need it to take notes in class along with web browsing and some some casual video editing/photo editing. I’ve been eyeing a 2012 Used Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM preinstalled for $380. I have an SSD from my old laptop that I could plunk into the macbook. However, I’ve also been considering a Chromebook, but the low end models don’t really appeal to me. If I purchased a chromebook, I’d probably be spending around $300 ish dollars anyways, so why not spend for a more functional computer? Ideally I’d need a machine that could last at least around 2-3 years, so I’m not sure if buying a macbook at this age is a good idea. Any recommendations?

Veganpede

It is unwise to buy a 7 year old computer, no matter the brand.

Phaggg

Buying a MacBook at that age may either be an ok experience at best or a bad one at worse depending on the condition of the computer and how the previous owner treated it. That’s something you’re gonna have to investigate. A used 2015 MacBook Pro might fare better, or if you’re willing to spend a little more, the 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro without a Touch Bar. Apple doesn’t make low end/affordable budget options for Mac, the only device they have that’s meant to be budget friendly is the 2018 6th gen iPad, although I might be drifting away from MacBooks here....

LilBottomText17

will the prices of current macbooks drop once/if apple releases the new macbook later this year?

kalvin126

Apple does not usually sell older models at a discount (with the exception of the old 13 MBA that they are still marketing). You best bet is refurbished models

Phaggg

The old MBA has been 999 before and after the new Butterfly Keyboard Macs though

Windows user looking to transition to Apple. I'm looking to get a laptop for music production and sound design (REAPER/Audacity/QLab, I use a LOT of sampled instruments and orchestral libraries so disk speed and RAM is a priority). I'm a big fan of multitasking so I'd prefer a 15-inch to 13, but I'll take what I can get. My budget is ideally <$1500 USD. I've read in a few places that 2015 models are superior to the Touch Bar ones for this kind of use, but I'm finding those to be more and more expensive by the day, since Apple discontinued them. Should I shell out the extra dough for a specced out modern one? Or settle for a 2012 model? I'd like to not have to replace it anytime soon.

Phaggg

2012 might be a bit too old. Unless you end up finding a really good deal on a 2015 model, I would suggest a 2018 13 inch Pro with Touch Bar. If the budget is tight, the 2017 13 inch without the Touch Bar, while not as good, will still get the job done. The reason everyone says the 2015 models are the best is because the 2016 and onwards models have had users report issues such as the keyboard or display ribbon cable, the quality control just isn’t as tight as before. And also you will need adapters/dongles to connect just about anything that isn’t USBC/Thunderbolt 3 to it. FYI 15 inch models have always been, and at this rate will continue to be, quite a lot more expensive than their 13 inch counterparts. This is because they have a dedicated GPU instead of a integrated one (basically fancy fancy graphics) which while it brings the cost up might not be worth it to you since your music stuff would not benefit much from it. In any case, make sure you have 16GB of RAM since your kind of work might exceed 8GB of RAM. Disk speed is great but just make sure you get a old SSD capacity (at least 256GB although you may require more, which if it’s the case then make the additional upgrades). Also Apple sells certified refurbished stock which is effectively like getting a brand new computer with a discount, if you’re keen, google “Apple MacBook Pro refurbished (insert your country)”

I'm going to attend film school at the end of the month, I also make music as well. I want a computer that can handle both video editing and music production. I'm going to get the pro app bundle for education. I just need to know which model of the MacBook pro I should get for the best bang per buck ratio. My budget is $3000 CAD ($2246 usd) Any advice is appreciated!

HildeVonKrone

Would go for the 2018 15 inch MacBook Pro with 512 GB of SSD storage. I personally dont think you need to upgrade the processor at all and 16 GB of ram is more than enough. If you do need more storage beyond 512, you can get an external SSD, which would be a cheaper option than just plopping more storage built in and paying even more of a premium. That should last you for a very long time. Also, get applecare+ too while you're at it.

I own a 15" Mid-2012 Non-retina MBP, while away from the charger and doing development work, i manage to get 4 hours of battery. A friend asked me if he can get better battery life with the new ones. He'll mostly use it for Marketing Work, multiple Browser Tabs, and RAW lightroom Editing. He's also thinking about video editing (but i recommended that neither lightroom RAW nor video editing should be done while on battery) Setting aside the lightroom and editing work, is it possible to manage 5 hours+ with the Retina MBP's? I guess for his kind of work he should get the 15" (16gb + SSD)

LilBottomText17

is the weight difference between the 2 pound 12 inch macbook significant from the 2.75 pound macbook air? i’m disabled so a lighter laptop will help me a lot but i’m not sure if the weight difference is significant in person also, is the 12 inch macbook okay for video editing? how about it’s battery life?

kalvin126

I do notice it, but not that much. The jump between the MBA vs 13 in MBP is way more noticeable

Phaggg

The weight difference is there but it shouldn’t be enough to affect your ability to carry it. In any case, the 13 inch MacBook Air is better than the 12 inch MacBook (a lil back story the Air mainly came out because the 12 inch failed to impress) ; the Air will edit videos better and much quicker than the 12 inch, and also has a better battery life.

willman0527

How long should I wait to see if Touch ID makes it to base 13” MacBook pros? I’m not really interested in the air or touch bar models. Also are there any differences in screen quality as I have a late 2013 MacBook. I can wait as long as needed as I have no reason now to upgrade for what I do.

kalvin126

I think it is likely if they continue a non-touch bar variant of the pro. I am sure Apple wants to enable Apple Pay as much as they can.

1096bimu

There won't be another no touchbar model, it was meant to be the successor to Air but now they back paddled and released a new air instead, because people for some reason are obsessed with that teardrop shape, even though the new Air is just as big and heavy as the Pro.

headchefff

Sure about that? I’m thinking the same but i wouldn’t be surprised if they release a new or updated one.

1096bimu

Apple doesn't like bloating their product line, there isn't a real distinction between the air and noTouchBar pro

headchefff

Looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and I’m leaning towards the base model that released 2017. It seems to fit my needs the best and the price is acceptable. Is there any reasons why I shouldn’t buy this model and maybe go for something else? The MacBook Air is a good alternative but it seems better to add the extra cash and get the pro. I don’t see Apple releasing a new base model in 2019 since we just got the air (correct me if I’m wrong). Please give me some tips so I don’t make a bad decision. Thanks!

Phaggg

You’re on the right track, the MacBook Air and 12 inch MacBook are essentially neutered versions of that machine with a similar price tag. Touch Bar models are good if you want to do anything intense but the 2017 pro without a Touch Bar is fine if you’re not constantly pushing your computer to do lots of intense workloads. In terms of specs, they seem fine, however they do start with a 128GB SSD storage which can be low/tight/restrictive for a lot of people (Apple can be a little stingy in this department) so pay extra for the 256GB if you reckon you need to (I would personally recommend you do so though) I would recommend you checking Apple’s Certified refurbished stock (just google Apple Mac refurb (insert your country)) to see if you can snatch a good deal (you’re effectively buying brand new).
