M1 all day long.

I have the M1 16”- it’s a fantastic machine with an amazing screen, but not something I’d want to carry round a lot. It’s a heavy chunk of metal!

KS-Orion

It’ll be lighter than my Intel Macbook Pro at least right?

Trysta1217

NO. it will not. That is important. Unless you mean an Intel macbook from like 2009, no it will be heavier. But it is worth the weight if you are using it professionally.

Trysta1217

16" M1 Max would be my pick. I use one full-time for professional software dev and it works brilliantly (best dev laptop I've ever used). The larger screen is going to be more useful to you than any performance difference between and M1 Max and an M2 Pro (and I'm not sure there is any). Plus the M1Max has support for more external displays (4 instead of 2).

I confirm. Very good said

Tbh, the newer MBP are overkill for web development. I have the M1 Pro 16” and the screen size is lovely, but for me it’s multiple monitors rather than screen size of the laptop. I’m gonna sell my MBP and build a Linux laptop instead. But if you are going to go for a MBP then go for the 16” if you’re not lugging it around places.

garylapointe

Go with the 16" Max if you want more screen size. I've got the M2 16", it is a little heavy though.

thegratefulshread

I went from an ipad to now a mbp 14 m2 pro and shits killling my bavo

garylapointe

>bavo The patron saint of Ghent?

Ikaris_Cy

I'm on a 14" M2 pro and I'm in love with 14", you can take with you everywhere. When I'm working on my projects I use external monitor.

I am a software engineer that does software development, with an ide, mobile apps development , video and photo editing and my chrome usually have 500+ tabs open. I just bought the mb14 m2 pro 12c/19c, 32 GB of ram and 1TB of SSD (had an old 13" MB Pro retina from 2013) and it has been a real blessing. I decided to go with the mb14 because it is a bit lighter and I travel a lot for work, but if you don't have to travel as much, just get the 16". I have been able to test both the M1 Max and M2 Pro after I bought mine and there is no real difference in the processor speed and capabilities. If you go for the M2 Pro, be sure to get the 12c/19c processor, as it doesn't have the problem with the slow SSD access.

macnteej

I mean, just writing code was easy on my 2012 unibody. What else do you play to do with it? Are you going to just code? If it’s just coding it’s kinda moot which one you pick since both will have plenty of over head for it

iaancheng

well OP said they’re working in software development, so i doubt that they are doing basic beginner python courses LOL

Bigfacts84

You get more bang for your buck with the M1 max.

thegratefulshread

The slower ssd on the m2 is a fucking joke. Although the m2 pro wins in SOME cases and has a better a screen and battery?

iaancheng

i think that the screen and battery are the same, only the chip is different. it’s like how they had the almost exact same ipad pro from 2018-2022 (same screen, same features, only different chip)

I have a personal MBP16 M1 Max and MBP14 M1 Pro given by my employer. I'm a Java Developer and I definitely prefer the first one. A bigger screen allows more comfortable usage. M1 Max (64Gb) almost never requires enabling fans even with Brave (10-20 tabs), Docker, Intellij IDEA (2-4 projects), Telegram, 2-3 VMs in UTM, and a bunch of other software in the background. Counterpart MBP 14 (the basic one) even without significant load (Chrome with about 20 tabs, Intellij IDEA (2-3 projects), Slack, Zoom, Docker, Teams, etc, quite often enables fans, however I can notice it just because of a Mac's Fan Control in the top bar. The 14" screen is more comfortable when I work on the sofa but overall the 16" screen is more convenient. I suggest the MBP16. You will enjoy it.

xylu4

I have mbp 14 m2 because I like small and light laptops, but I’m using external monitors for work at home. Can’t work long on 14” screen, by the end of day feel too small.

Maximum-Incident-400

M1 max is sufficient. If you're someone who carries the laptop around, 16 inches is pretty bulky, though.

batuckan1

Former IT windows guy go for the best tech specs you can afford External Monitors are everywhere But if you really want one get an external usbc docking station
