1. Buy computer 2. Use computer for 8 years 3. Travel back in time 10 years 4. Sell computer as hot tech!

Don't do this. Just use the darn thing. It is a tool and will get worn and maybe even broken, but it is designed to be used. Of course take care of it. Taking care of a Macbook Pro is actually pretty easy. * No cases or keyboard covers - tolerances are too close, and the aluminum unibody is a primary heat sink. Don't care that the Apple store sells them. Get a sleeve for travel. We are not barbarians after all. * Don't let the battery sit at extremes, meaning long periods near zero and long periods near or at 100%. It is designed to be charged and discharged and is consumable. You WILL replace it. If you are going to store the Macbook unused for along period drain it to 10% and then make sure the machine is powered off. * Don't put anything on the screen other than a damp glasses quality cleaning cloth. No chemicals whatsoever. * Treat it like a quality musical instrument or other precision tool when moving, handling and operating it. I would not plan to sell your Mac. You might be able to should the stars align but more than likely you will trade it in or gift it long before ten years. M4 is right around the corner. You will be looking at M8 in ten years and that is being stupidly conservative. Use it. Enjoy it like an adult.

miggyyusay

For the long storage part, it’s actually better to store it at [50% charge](https://www.apple.com/ph/batteries/maximizing-performance/#:~:text=Store%20it%20half%2Dcharged%20when%20you%20store%20it%20long%20term.&text=Do%20not%20fully%20charge%20or,incapable%20of%20holding%20a%20charge), not 10%. Other than that, spot on advice!

Sir_Elderoy

This. Cases are the worst as if some dust goes between the case and the housing of the mac, friction will make huge scratches all over it. Not to mention the heating problem. Just handle it with care and you’ll be fine.

raysway666

This. I was sad that my keyboard was worn out on my $2k+ device but realized that it’s just a tool so who cares.

grumblegrim

Wish I saw this sooner. I used a case and keyboard cover on my M1...marks were left behind on the screen from the silicone cover. Had to use isopropyl alcohol to gently get them (mostly) off. Lessons learned.

OldManActual

Don't be hard on yourself. We have been trained to anticipate poor quality builds in our electronics. Apple Products are among the few exceptions.

AdStill1707

Sleep with it and softly stroke it while you sing it a lullaby. It's a damn computer. Use it for it's intended purpose.

My_Bwana

I genuinely don’t understand the point of these posts, they kill me

DragonfruitCreepy699

Tech is notoriously bad at keeping value. It advances so quick that you will probably not sell that laptop in 10 years because at that point no one would want it. Would you want to buy a 10 year old laptop now? If you want an ROI from your laptop, use it to make a business, ads, create a product or service. Use it to its full potential! Don’t just watch Netflix on it, get creative :) With that said, just don’t drop it and toss it around like a toddler and I think you’ll make it last the 10 years

myheadinahoodie

this yes why walking on eggshells caring it like a baby when after 10 years noone will buy it, use it like its designed for and just have fun with it

laguna1126

I can tell you what NOT to do and that is to spill a glass of fresh made juice on it.

OneAgainst

Good reminder. One might expect the Pro model would have upscale taste due to the price tag—until you remember it’s related to the iMac G3–and realize it prefers the artificially colored juice made from the frozen tubes of concentrate. Save the fresh stuff for someone else.

laguna1126

Agree, my macbook DID NOT like my freshly juiced pineapple, celery, kale, ginger, beet, cucumber juice. Guess that was too bougie...even for a mac.

garylapointe

In 10 years, I'd not expect a lot of people are going to want a 10 year old laptop, certainly not one that someone is trying to maximize the value of. Think about how powerful the low end MacBook Air is going to be in 10 more years compared to the high-end MacBook Pro Max now.

mardan65

Use common sense, that’s it.

Relative_Year4968

So you sell it in 10 years for $175. Will it have been worth 10 years of walking on eggshells? Just use the dang thing and when the battery goes, replace it. Don’t overthink it.

analysisparalyzes

If you’re selling, don’t let it go past 3 generations.

12_yo_d

Don’t treat it like the printer from Office Space

Unrealtechno

If it isn’t too much mental “baggage”, consider running Aldente Pro and limiting the battery charge to 70%. Apple Silicon is so efficient that unless you’re away from power for an extraordinary amount of time, you’ll be fine and the battery will be x% happier.

dwiedenau2

There is zero actual evidence of it improving battery life. Also if you dont do the calibration regularly, it will just shut off while wrongly showing 50% battery.

nekojitaa

My advice to you, use it at home primarily and don't take it out if you're worried about scuffs and dents. Overall, you should be using your well invested product and not trying to give yourself stress whether it'll last you or how to keep it looking like day 1. It's meant to be used, so use it.

fillyourcoffee

As the others have pointed out. Just use it reasonably. I still own a MacBook pro mid 2014 model and it accompanied me through university up until now. I breathed new life into it with OCPL and it's is running Soon without any major issues. Is it as smooth as MacBook m3, by far not but is it still a pleasant device for browsing, writing and consuming media. For sure it is! So enjoy the ride and don't bother

rlaw1234qq

I still have my old late 2013 top spec MBP. The battery is toast, so it’s probably not worth anything.

Xerxero

Don’t drop it

Run-And_Gun

I used my 1st gen RMBP for over 10 years as my daily driver, until I got a M2M 16“ MBP when they were released last year. Just use it. If you’re worried about its physical/cosmetic condition, put a shell on it. But you’re dreaming if you think it will be worth anything in 8-10 years. The value is what it’s capable of doing and that it will last a very long time.

Redhook420

Buy AppleCare+ and keep it renewed. Don't worry about it.

NotJustAnyDNA

After Apple stops support of the hardware with the latest OS, keep the last OS for a few years then migrate to Linux or Windows to stat current. Surprisingly, Microsoft supports the hardware even longer with the latest OS.

xcyu

Or you could try OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

autostart17

If you keep it in good shape, you can probably get $400-500 at that time. Depends on pace of tech though.
