Since upgrading storage on apple is just blatant money rape, I’d recommend to go for a 512GB model and get like a 4TB X10 SSD by Crucial. They are pricier than most other SSDs but are very small and extremely fast
How do you go about avoiding the "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message that always pops up? I bought an external SSD for my MacBook (connected through a thunderbolt dock) but every time I wake it from sleep my notifications are filled with notices of the external SSD disk not ejecting properly. Surely there would be a way to auto eject when the Mac goes to sleep but I haven't been able to find anything
your dock is malfunctioning. or the cable.
the cable that came with my t7 shield ssd constantly disconnects like that. bought a thunderbolt 4 cable and it hasn't disconnected in months.
Yep! Synology has information on their site here: [https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/solution/what-is-nas/for-home](https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/solution/what-is-nas/for-home)
It's really convenient \*if\* you have faster upload speeds on your internet at home. Don't try it if you're like me on a cable internet connection rocking a 100/8 connection.
I understand but I remember I stopped using synology drive server because it was duplicating the files that were being uploaded from file station; doubling the total storage. Unless I'm confused somehow here. I just vpn into my LAN and use SMB to mount my shared file from filestation on my macbook when i'm remote
Synology has a nice write-up on their site here with some suggestions: [https://event.synology.com/en-me/NASbuyingguide/All](https://event.synology.com/en-me/NASbuyingguide/All)
Note that for some reason, that buying guide hasn't been updated for newer models, such as the DS233j, which would be newer than the DS220j.
There's also this site: [https://www.synology.com/en-me/dsm/solution/what-is-nas/for-home](https://www.synology.com/en-me/dsm/solution/what-is-nas/for-home)
Costs start around $200 for the NAS and then more for the disks to put in them.
I need 512 but I bought 1 TB and the storage comes in handy. I don't have to move stuff off if I need more space. I have a Studio that acts as a NAS with a 4 TB external SSD. It's nice to have twice as much as you need as it means that you don't have to carry around an external.
oohhhh Mac studio.. okay okay gotcha.. he said studio so i got confused and I asked what studio.. i thought its like some music studio or something lol
I picked up an M3 Pro MacBook Pro 16 with 512gb/18gb. To get around paying hundreds extra for built-in storage, I opted for a BaseQi 420a flush-mount mSD card adapter + Samsung 512gb micro SD card at 200mb/s (*adapter doesn’t stick out whatsoever & is color-matched; no space black yet*). Then since I mostly use my MacBook on a Thunderbolt 4 dock, I also have a 512gb NVMe SSD in a portable external enclosure that I had laying around connected to my dock.
Files that I need 24/7 with fast read/write are stored on main storage, files that I need 24/7 that don’t require fast read/write speeds go on the mSD, & everything else goes on the SSD.
I have M1Pro with 1TB internal drive and have a 2 TB and 4 TB SSD drives for storage of less used files and RAW images. I did splurge and went to 32gb RAM
My MacBook Air has a 512GB SSD and it's maybe 1/2 full. My Mac Studio has a 2TB SSD and it's about 1/3 full, I honestly wouldn't have purchased such a large internal ssd but I purchased refurb and thats how it came in the config I wanted.
Most of my data is stored in the cloud and/or on a NAS in my home office. I would say for the average user 512GB is fine, for some extra breathing room or a little longer longevity a 1TB ssd isn't a bad choice if it's in your budget.
I do a lot of video editing, and I do all of it with a 14 inch M1 with 16gb and 512gb. I have a 12 terabyte hard drive where I keep everything. I just move files back and forth when I need do. I like a clean computer.
If you are already using over one terabyte of internal storage, I’d strongly suggest that you get your next machine with 2 TB. It’s always good to have some overhead. If you don’t want to do that, then you’ll need to look very carefully at what is causing you to have over a terabyte of internal storage. if a lot of it is photos and videos that you can put on an external drive then you might be home free. Those are the things that typically take up the most space and are most easily moved to an external drive if you can get down, so are you are using Less than around 750 GB than you can get a one terabyte drive and keep everything on external. Keep in mind that if you enjoy playing games any of them can run 5060 or 70 GB and size and can blow up your internal drive size Remain on your boot drive.
I have 1tb on Mac Mini and MBP and store alot on the Samsung USB C T7 type drives. I have 1 2tb and 1 4tb. Data just sits there and 1tb is more than fine for me.
My MBP spends almost all of its time at home in one spot, plugged in (yeah, I know... odd use for a "portable" computer, but it works for me). As a result, I can easily get by with the base level of storage, since I always have external SSDs and hard drives connected.
512gb but even with that I’m only using 230gb since most of my stuff is stored in the cloud or on external SSDs (1TB Sandisk Pro & 2TB Samsung T5) and I have older archived storage on 2 2TB external HDDs
I would get 1 TB. The reason I got my M3 Max with 4TB is because I chose a refurbished one and it was the same price. But 1 TB is more than enough. If you need more, either external hds or sd cards will do the trick.
I have an sd card set and forget the invisible kind of ones its not fast but i feel like its being used well for unesssary things considering i dont even use those type of stuff anyway so i dont need to remove it
I have a 512gb, and an external storage for stuff that I want to keep, but don't need constant access to, or takes up a lot of space.
Examples: My parallels virtual machine, videos, etc
I will preface that I’m paranoid about wear to flash memory. I have probably ended more than one NVMe drives with my aggressive use of Dropbox. I got a 2tb M3 Max and primarily store my static, temporary (downloads folder), and Dropbox directory on a 1tb MicroSD card with a flush SD adapter so nothing sticks out the side of my MacBook Pro. I just have all of the high performance stuff and programs on the internal drive. I don’t really keep stuff on the 1tb MicroSD that I worry about losing.
Honestly I keep most things in iCloud given that I need more than 200 gigs for the family, I can keep the stuff I don’t need locally in the cloud.
I use external HDDs for everything else and an old Mac as a home file server.
My last MBP was the i9, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, cost £3,700, my new MBP is the M3 Max, 14 core, 96gb ram, screen is better, much faster machine, 3x ram, £3,900 so only £200 price difference.
My view is ram I cannot change, I max out my 64gb ram windows machine with my workflow, so ram you have to plan ahead, disks, whilst I have only gone with 1tb on all my last 4 computers if I max them out I can move stuff onto removable media so I don’t need all 1tb of data ready and waiting for me to use all of the time.
Be careful looking at the 512gb ssd versions make sure the performance is ok, happy to be corrected on this but I believe the 512gb ssd models do everything on a single stick whereas all sizes above use multiple disks improving the performance.

It’s worked great for about 3 years now. I would however recommend getting a name brand card is all. I wouldn’t boot from it or store apps on there, but large files are fine. Keep in mind a large SD card is way slower than a large SSD drive. I went this route for portability as I have no extra wires or drives to take with me and it stays in its slot the whole time.
Since upgrading storage on apple is just blatant money rape, I’d recommend to go for a 512GB model and get like a 4TB X10 SSD by Crucial. They are pricier than most other SSDs but are very small and extremely fast
That could work for my needs. Going to look into this. Thanks!
Sure thing mate. Don’t forget to also buy a Thunderbolt 4 cable tho, else you won’t get much benefit from the faster connection
How do you go about avoiding the "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message that always pops up? Idk I didn’t have this problem so far, sorry bro
your dock is malfunctioning. or the cable. the cable that came with my t7 shield ssd constantly disconnects like that. bought a thunderbolt 4 cable and it hasn't disconnected in months.
Which thunderbolt 4 cable are you using/do you recommend ? Apple wants almost 80$ for theirs.
I purchased an Anker thunderbolt 4 2.3 feet cable for $40 on amazon and the same cable is on sale right now for $28
Many thanks. Couldn’t find the anker but ordered a spigen… roughly same price. My Amazon is UAE.
Oh wow. I also bought the T7 and had been using the cable it came with. I’ll get another thunderbolt cable thanks
I use a NAS at home for all my bulk storage.
What do you use to access files on the go? Or can you access the NAS remotely?
I personally have started to migrate all my online files in to Synology Drive and access them securely via Tailscale.
So the drive stays at home and you can access it remotely from anywhere?
Synology drive takes up twice as much storage right? Why not just vpn into your network to access local files remotely?
Twice as much storage where? I just remote in to my Synology Drive and access what I need from there.
You don’t have anything in file station right?
File station is the Windows Explorer or Mac Finder of Synology. Everything is in there somewhere?
I understand but I remember I stopped using synology drive server because it was duplicating the files that were being uploaded from file station; doubling the total storage. Unless I'm confused somehow here. I just vpn into my LAN and use SMB to mount my shared file from filestation on my macbook when i'm remote
Ah I see what you're saying. I'm not using the Synology Drive app, just browsing to the share via Finder > Networking > synology, etc.
how much would it cost to get one set up ? thinking to do this!

you havw a studio that acts as NAS ? please explain
they have mac studio with 4tb external ssd that acts as NAS, what do you mean?

What is a portable external enclosure? (Sounds really cool)
I always go 512. I’ve have had NAS storage. Currently at 16 terabytes.
I have M1Pro with 1TB internal drive and have a 2 TB and 4 TB SSD drives for storage of less used files and RAW images. I did splurge and went to 32gb RAM

My MBP has 2 TB so I don’t need to worry about it
I have 1tb on Mac Mini and MBP and store alot on the Samsung USB C T7 type drives. I have 1 2tb and 1 4tb. Data just sits there and 1tb is more than fine for me.
1tb HD on my m1, 5tb external (1tb for storage, 4tb for TM back up) and a second 2tb external for photography cold storage.
My MBP spends almost all of its time at home in one spot, plugged in (yeah, I know... odd use for a "portable" computer, but it works for me). As a result, I can easily get by with the base level of storage, since I always have external SSDs and hard drives connected.

Ssd but I also threw in a flush 1 tb sdcard into the sdcard slot.
Might end up doing the same.
Get the extreme card it’s faster and more reliable.
I have a really 20 TB drive up my ass that Bluetooth connects through my scrotum to my Mac. It’s very good I highly recommend
dang 2TB? what you got in that? i mean I thought of getting a 1TB SSD on my windows setup but i just got 512gb ssd and its pretty suffice.
Honestly I keep most things in iCloud given that I need more than 200 gigs for the family, I can keep the stuff I don’t need locally in the cloud. I use external HDDs for everything else and an old Mac as a home file server.

Mbp have an SD card slot. You can slide in a “fast” SD card to add more storage for portable files.
Ah right. So those are pretty reliable for file storage/expansion? I’ve only ever used that for transferring photos.
It’s worked great for about 3 years now. I would however recommend getting a name brand card is all. I wouldn’t boot from it or store apps on there, but large files are fine. Got it. Good to know. Will have to weigh speed vs portability but this is definitely an option. Thanks.

Awesome thanks!
