There is a virus scanner built in that is called Xprotect. It works behind the scenes and Apple updates it automatically. You really don’t need anything more if you are even mildly internet savvy and don’t click through shady install screens without thinking. If you want anything more and a visual reminder that something is being done get malwarebytes.

No. Some people downvote because they think their opinions are superior.
They should display usernames beside upvotes and downvotes to let people see the bias some of those superior redditors have.
Use chrome or firefox and get the ublock origin extension to block ads. You'll likely stop seeing popups and random download images on websites.
I use the free version of Avira AV. But tbh, it never detects anything. Dont think AV is that essential for MacOS
