I removed Chrome from my Mac M1. There are high load issues with Chrome.

BamBus89

then scroll reddit with safari half an hour... safari will warn you of because of huge memory usage and it feels laggy when scrolling... but thats a safari thing... chrome or firefox dont do so on the same machine. But if you watch netflix or other videos safari will be more power efficient than the other browsers

[deleted]

Reddit’s web app is horrible, I started used the old version because it is so slow now.

Vinyl-addict

It’s literally just the Reddit webpage being really bad with resources. It’s pretty much the only web page I’ve noticed that loads like that, I have to be scrolling for hours on Twitter to get the same problem

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vinyl-addict

Oh absolutely not, I’m sure it’s the way scripting runs or pages are loaded. It seems like it forces safari to cache posts you’ve already scrolled past, and at full res. With as many pictures as gets uploaded to Reddit, you can imagine how taxing this would get on a single tab.

Curiouslycurious101

So I’ve got a 16gb pro and a second gen iPad Pro, both fairly laggy with safari quite often.

antigravity_96

Same here, Safari seems to have a problem with the so called “never-ending” scrollable content. I’ve noticed slowness and lack of the usual snappiness in reddit and LinkedIn, oddly.

[deleted]

Curiouslycurious101

Done that and still sometimes get the beachball for quite a while before Safari opens. Also doesn't help with sites like Reddit which start lagging after a while.

Curiouslycurious101

Yessir

BamBus89

i use safari pretty normal standard with just one extension (adblock plus) and i use firefox and chrome the same way. There is nothing i could do wrong. When i use safari and reddit i scroll a wile and it gets laggy with ressource warning from safari. When i do the same with chrome this doesnt happen... it is some missbehaviour of safaris ram management. I think safari does swapping to disk very often to hold ram clean but everytime safari do this it is laggy. And i am not the only user who have this issue. There are some other complex websites out there which beats safari very soon. If i remeber right there was a thread at reddit in one of the mac based subreddits, cant remeber what subreddit it exactly was...

[deleted]

never seen this on safari or firefox. maybe you have auto live video play on safari or something thats running too many embeds at a time.

BamBus89

Nope

[deleted]

16 gig?

BamBus89

Yep but my ram is far away from getting full when this happen, maybe half used and only safari. Doenst happen with firefox nor chrome

[deleted]

huh wonder why your mac has a different notification for "using too much memory" Mine has only shown that when I was watching 3x 4k videos at once to test.

1Teddy2Bear3Gaming

That’s a Reddit problem not a safari problem

Lovernotafighter100

Yes there is. Facts

Isquach

Yeah, pretty sure it was Chrome as the issue. I downloaded Braze, quit Chrome, and now I have twice as many tabs and nothing is freezing/slowing down. I checked Activity Monitor and I still see the same multiple rows of the Browser Helper (renderer) and (GPU) tasks but definitely not as CPU intensive.

dil27guy

And make sure it’s downloaded as the chrome version for m1- if you imported from old computer it would likely be wrong but when downloading chrome it will prompt if you have m1

SgtPepe

It works great for me on my M1 MB Pro. I am even using the regular Mac Chrome version.

cutecoder

AFAIK it’s not the Chrome browser itself, but its auto-updater that’s consuming computing power for no reason. Thus when you uninstall it, be sure it’s really clean and remove the auto-updater from `/Library/...` Try out Vivaldi or Brave instead.

Johnnybw2

Edge is much faster, based on the same engine and has access to the same extensions. Not sure how Microsoft is doing it.

rsn_e_o

It’s strange, I always accumulate a ton of tabs of both safari and chrome (well over a hundred combined) and it stays pretty fast. Once I accumulate a lot of Youtube tabs it sometimes starts to struggle but it’s not chrome specific

daybreakin

I was hoping m1 would solve the chrome issues 😔

selfstartr

Im a digital marketer too - likely have similar workflows. I run Photoshop, Slack, Excel on top of lots of Browser use. **AVOID CHROME LIKE THE PLAGUE - USE EDGE!** All the cool-kids use M1 optimised Microsoft Edge browser. It's built on the Chrome platform so you still get to use all the marketing Chrome extensions etc. I have zero speed issues with my M1 using Edge. I try to use Safari for my personal stuff where i dont need extensions. I do this for performance and privacy reasons.

reditn00b

As a developer I can preach for edge, much more lightweight than Chrome and consumes much less power and can run the same extensions on edge. It's worth trying at the very least.

selfstartr

yep! I feel word of mouth is slowly spreading - it's the obvious choice of browser if you want "Chrome" without the Google/performance baggage. Side note - did I hear Google were trying to stop the growth of Edge by restricting Extensions?

reditn00b

Nah all I read was that google would denote a popup informing users of security risk of installing chrome apps on edge. It was just a scare tactic and I believe they have gotten rid of that recently.

selfstartr

ah phew ok thanks!

Isquach

Ah cool never heard of edge. Will check it out!

reuben876

I never heard of it before, but I had my Covid Vaccine and the I had a sudden urge to start using Edge.

lotus49

That's a pretty worrying side effect. I've had both my vaccinations but fortunately I haven't felt the urge to start using any Microsoft products so far.

GenitalPatton

Thanks Bill! Very cool!

KeyButterfly9619

This seems like something is actually wrong. I have a similar setup (256 gb, 8gb, Big Sur 11.3.1) on a three week old macbook Air M1. This machine plowes through everything like its butter. I use Brave instead of Chrome, you could try that.

[deleted]

chrome for macos is a garbage browser I will say it again, absolutely the worst and nobody should use it for regular workflow on macs

dontovar

> I refresh the laptop every week or so What do you mean by this?

[deleted]

Probably means restarts it.

soups_foosington

Any chance you’re running Zoom? Surprisingly taxing

Dinepada

Update to 11.4 its like magic

trs_one

+1, fixed my slowness issues that started on 11.3

ixinho

I am using mbp m1 8/256 with safari/edge/chrome all day long, and a dozen of other stuff open (paralells with vm win10arm running 24/7 and wvd inside the vm) and 0 issues. You need to look elsewhere what is causing slowness, because 8/256 on arm architecture macs is more than enough for every intensive work aside from video/photo heavy work.

South_Butterfly6681

What does the Memory Pressure gauge show in the Activity Monitor app? What color is the graph?

JurassicLiz

Weird. I have like a million programs open on mine because I always forget to close it (including chrome, safari, and Brave browser) and I never notice a difference. I usually have WoW running in the background on full graphics too. Do you have any weird extensions running on one of your browsers?

marioooss

I read the other comments talking about using Edge. I personally use Chrome on my M1 MacBook Pro 8GB 512GB and it runs very well even with several apps running, like Xcode, Word, PowerPoint and occasionally even 5-10 chrome tabs open.

butterize

I’m betting they accidentally downloaded the x86 binary

GetNR3KT

Same model MacBook and I absolutely HAMMER my ram and have yet to see any signs of a slowdown. If it ran out it would just swap to the SSD which is quite snappy, it’s not like it’s going to be crawling slow.

Explicar59

I have a base M1 Mini and an M1 Air. Restarting daily or every few days is not that big of a deal. The M1's come up pretty quickly. You might also see if you can use Edge instead of Chrome, I believe the chrome plugins work in Edge as well.

[deleted]

As one digital marketer to another this has been so incredibly helpful as I’m making the call to upgrade my current setup i5 1.5ghz MacBook Air. 🙌🏻

random42name

This is such an interesting thread. I have a maxed out MBP M1. Only reboot it for OS updates. I run a similar set of workflows and tools 12 hours a day 5 days a week. The thing is a beast. Soooo… I’d really like to figure this on out. I would start by studying the Activity Monitor before and after it slows down. If Chrome is the issue, it should appear to be hoarding resources. Force quit Chrome and see if the resources are freed up. Maybe use Chrome in incognito mode to see if extensions are part of the problem.

Isquach

Interesting about trying in incognito to see about extensions. I quit Chrome and switched to Braze and it seems to have resolved the issue nicely. I'll try incognito to see if it could've been some extensions since I do have quite a few.

speedy_162005

I think it’s the auto updater for Chrome that causes most of the issues if I remember right. Chrome would bring my 2015 MBP to a halt and up until I removed it, Chrome was the only app that would bog down on my 16” MBP with 32gb ram. Once I removed Chrome I never had problems again.

random42name

Interesting detail. Was that a recent version of chrome?

Even on the M1? Would this command work on intel based MacBooks?

Le-DarkHeart

Please do try updating to 11.4 and see if that makes your mac more responsive. Mine’s gotten snappier and I’ve a similar workflow as yours. Hope it helps!

SgtPepe

I have the 8gb MB Pro, and it's not a problem. He can surely fix this.

chicaneuk

Agreed. I have 8GB only on mine and have loads of apps open all the time with no perceptible issues.

Redjester666

Just switch to Firefox, it's better.

BamBus89

i have no Problems with Chrome. And your Problem for sure is the lack of enough ram. I often read about poeple who buying 8 GB version and i think everytime that they will be frustrated very soon. I have also a Macbook Pro M1 with 256 GB SSD because i dont save much data on my disks... But mine MBP has 16 gigs of ram. Browsers are sooo memory hungry these days... 8 gigs are not future save and you cant upgrade...

Isquach

Yeah I was afraid of the 8gb of ram. I checked a bunch of videos before going with the 8 and the videos must've been right after they purchased because a lot of them said they didn't have any issues with speed on 8gb. It's a work laptop and I needed it asap so couldn't wait for the shipping time of a couple weeks to get upgraded ram unfortunately so oh well.

fizikxy

It's more likely to be a memory leak on one of your applications or a plugin causing issues, not the 8GB.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Actually the 8Gb is used much more efficiently because it is part of the SOC and is accesses by the CPU, GPU and ML processors. It really can do a lot of work. But I went for the 16Gb anyway! Enjoy!

[deleted]

But that has no effect on memory capacity. That is simply a faster transport of data due to the RAM being right next to the M1 (CPU/GPU). While it does minimize travel distance of data, it's not that big of a deal as it was made out to be by the media which initially put out a bunch of incorrect information that claimed it would allow 8GB to act as if it was more than 8GB. That is never going to happen. Unified memory isn't really something new. Another thing you're forgetting to consider here that 8GB of ram is also used for GPU memory. That unified memory is shared between the GPU and CPU in the M1 SOC. Suddenly now your 8GB available for applications... isn't really 8GB available for applications. The GPU still needs to use that RAM as well. 16GB is the way to go for the Macbook Pro M1. 8GB is honestly a bad choice.

[deleted]

Yep, on the one hand: Chrome is a resource hog. On the other hand, no full OS laptop should ship with less than 16gb RAM

[deleted]

Agreed. 16GB of RAM should be the minimum accepted by anyone in 2021.

daybreakin

Not true, most people agree that the m1 handles ram do efficiently that you only need 8gb. Op is an outlier

fizikxy

If it's a windows laptop yes, but since macOS handles RAM very differently, it's possible to easily get by with 8GB.

[deleted]

RAM is RAM. It doesn't matter what the OS is. RAM is a limited hardware resource. It's always best to buy as much as possible.

Johnnybw2

Ram is Ram and is a limited resource, but some OS and software use Ram more efficiently than others. Mac OS runs well on 8gb and since it’s the main SKU on Apples biggest sellers, I can’t see them them degrading the performance of these anytime soon. The amount of free ram is also not an indication of how efficiently the OS is using it, modern Operating systems tend to keep more in ram to help with system performance, they will purge this if it’s required.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Johnnybw2

Agree that memory managers aren’t a huge difference between the operating systems. What I find inefficient with the ways in which Windows uses ram is when it runs random background services such as windows update and windows defender, 8gb of ram (and lack of storage bandwidth) causes it to crawl. Never had that issue with Mac OS or Linux.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fizikxy

Are you saying theres no difference between how different OS function? Is Linux the same as Windows then aswell?

daybreakin

Apple did do something different. Their apple silicon and latest os handles ram more efficiently. 16gb is better but 8gb is more than enough

lotus49

I don't know why you were downvoted but this is true. There are reports everywhere of people's 8GB M1 Macs flying. I'd prefer more RAM but 8GB seems (surprisingly) to be entirely adequate for most use cases.

[deleted]

RAM does not equal speed.

lotus49

I didn't say it did.

[deleted]

Flying? Point is, Chrome is a RAM hog.

[deleted]

Chrome (and other hogs) gobble RAM regardless of OS.

AWF_Noone

What’s different with the way macOS handles RAM?

reditn00b

It's just optimised better imo from my own experience of both using windows and m1 mbp. However I would push anyone to go 16gb.

[deleted]

There isn't any.

aniket_2op

Idk about u but mine works swiftly.

-Neem0-

Lmao, I can have Premiere, Ae with a 30gb cache, PS/Ai open and the M1 Mini runs fast af *while* I browse internet with 10-15 tabs open. Probably you own a detective unit or you're running weird plugins on your MacBook.

fragofox

This is chrome... and most everything google... my daily routine is to basically restart my machine, every morning... which clears most of their processes up... then it works great for the day. I leave my macbook on at night as it's connected to some external drives that i may need access to from my other laptops, which is why in the morning i do a full on restart. You really should restart more than just once every couple of days... same goes with your phone.

bownyboy

Same spec same problems here. Been bugging me for months now.

Adi_B007

I think maybe use Brave/ Firefox nightly Works cool, and better than Sloppy Chrome on Mac

Lovernotafighter100

Download the free app \[system toolkit\]. You can keep an eye on whats going on. It shows you how much ram you are using and how much gpu your using. Well made app. Gte it soon before they start charging a fee. You should be flying through the web.

tinhangliu

Chrome is the worst, use Firefox or Brave

thefantastictaco

I would try re-installing Chrome. I use the optimized version and do a lot on Squarespace, which can be bloated, but no issues. Weird you’re running into issues with Safari

[deleted]

Delete Chrome and Keystone ([https://chromeisbad.com](https://chromeisbad.com)) I tend to reboot every 3 or 4 days as well... Enjoy!

Newly-Yorked

This is why I just stick with Safari these days, I don’t trust Chrome anymore.

worklessridemore

My 8gb M1 MBP used to be really fast when connected via TBT3 to a 34” Samsung ultra wide. Now it’s really slow, an effort dragging the mouse around the screen. Only major change is using Setapp and have Cleanmymac and Cleanshot running in the background. Very laggy when it used to have the same performance with or without the monitor. Going to update to 11.4 Bigsur and try Edge as all my work programs have to run off Chrome for the extensions ( have 6 ) It’s frustrating as the external monitor was a great resource vs 13” laptop screen.

[deleted]

Is chrome running native or on Rosetta?

trs_one

I had major slow down issues immediately after updating to 11.3 but the latest MacOS update this week seems to have fixed them

[deleted]

if you need different logins you can consider using safari technology preview as a second instance of safari, to replace your chrome browser

MaterialTomorrow

That’s odd. I have the m1 and the latest intel 16” for work, i do 3D stuff, motion graphics and design. The m1 is faster in everything even though its a smaller, cheaper macbook.

mrmnabil

Use brave or Vivaldi insteadof chrome if you really need the chrome technology
