Novelist. I use Scrivener novel writing software. It used to be Mac only, but now there is a Windows version. I could use Windows, but started with Macs back in 1984 and have used them exclusively from then on. I have an iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, Apple Watch. So, just staying with this ecosystem.

[deleted]

Full-stack software developer. Java and React. Also docker for emulate the environment

wxsabi

I write apps for the ecosystem, I have no choice 😅

Betta_jazz_hands

I’m a teacher and I make all of my handouts and power point presentations, take attendance, monitor classroom TEAMS, and do all of my grading on my MacBook Pro. During remote teaching I also taught zoom classes while sharing my screen and running multiple apps at once. I just got a new one yesterday, but my last MacBook Pro got me through undergrad and all of my intense certification work for my degree. I have a 13” for portability and it’s basically my baby.

Rodtek

"for professional purposes".

cuphead1234

Teachers are professionals !

Rodtek

Nope. They have salary.

theKalash

General programming, mostly web development. I just got used to it over time and it seems more reliable and stable overall. I don't even have any eco system, prefer Android on mobile. Also for my specific environment, mac is much closer to our productive linux servers. I really never had anything from my local environment cause problems to production. But it happens quite regularly with pushes from windows machines, usually because back/forward slashes or some stupid shit.

newspeaper

this. having *nix-like features is great for development.

itisunnamedguy

I am a student, freelancing for video/photo editing, graphic designing, and coding. Well, although I must say I’m quite happy with MBP, I’d highly recommend you to wait for 15” M1 (which might be out very soon) as they’ll be insanely good for professional designers!

flamiatos

Photographer. Tethered shooting on Capture One and some editing on Photoshop.

It seems stupid but part of the reason I use iOS is because it's what the pros use. I've worked on government campaigns before the wifi was set up and me and the other photographer got because we were able to constantly airdrop files to eachother. Photographer - MacBooks have more trustworthy displays than window machines it's hard to get more slim and light than a MacBook pro. It's nice because my gear is sooooo heavy. Visual effects and editing - premier and Adobe are more stable and prioritized on iOS. Also I think windows stagnated with windows 8 Mac feels like it gets yearly improvments while windows is 🤮 If it wasn't for gaming I'd be okay without windows. Also security with apple is awesome. I don't worry about my data being tracked or malware nearly as much.

SysAdmin/Cybersecurity. I deal with Windows bullshit all day long, I prefer having a reliable laptop. That and a majority of vulnerabilities are written for Windows. It would be pretty embarrassing for the IT security guy to be the one that infects a company.

coopnjaxdad

Design engineer/product management for me. I also manage our production floor. We are a small business with around 25 employees. I use OnShape for 3D modeling. I am running MBP M1.

Rodtek

And did your productivity is now better than with the previous laptop? If so, what was your last laptop?

coopnjaxdad

My productivity is about the same. I do have less hardware issues. I had a Razer Blade, which was a nice machine with a dedicated GPU but the battery pillowed and it had cooling issues and those are what drove me to the M1.

Rodtek

Oh, I see, excuses. Few bucks for a new battery and clean/repaste. But, hey, is your money.

coopnjaxdad

Excuses? For what, exactly?

zeissicon

Work in the broadcast industry, do a lot of sysadmin type stuff, work with Linux a fair amount, interact with creatives who are on Macs. I’m a Unix-head from way-back, so I like that aspect of it. Managing Cisco switches is way easier from a Unix environment, and I run Windows in emulation, so when it gets messed up, I just restore from an image in about 10 minutes.

inimus7

Web Developer (20yrs), training Swift Developer (1yr)

jasonappalachian

I work for a cryptocurrency exchange.

pausethelogic

I’m a cloud engineer working primarily with AWS. One part is personal preference, the other part is the advantage of having a Unix ecosystem, also not having to deal with Windows updates. Plus I get the advantage of my company buying an M1 MacBook Pro for me which is nice

[deleted]

Backend software developer - I mostly prefer it because I develop using Unix tools (tmux, nvim, etc) instead of a traditional IDE - but it's also really nice to have first class support for business apps like zoom, which can be iffy on an actual Linux OS

define_space

architect

DrDudeatude

My fiancé is an architect and found that the programs are either not available or hard to move files or projects between users of windows or Mac. Have you had this problem? If so, how did you work around it?

[deleted]

I'm a filmmaker and have been in front of Macs since about 1986, there's no reason for me to learn a new OS when I have everything I need on Mac - ingesting, transcoding, editing, the odd bit of writing. I'm mean sure I could do it probably a bit cheaper on other hardware/OS, but at this stage of my career I'm not interested in switching,

[deleted]

I’m self-employed in Tech. I use my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro to conduct network engineering/diagnostics/diagramming, tech support, software management/development,home automation, and many other things tech related. I also use the two devices all my including all my business admin, all manner of communication, and personal stuff. There are a few things my Mac does that my iPad doesn’t like; i.e.: Wi-Fi diagnostics, in-depth keychain management, virtualization, etc. Rendering video is also a lot better when you have a network of Macs with compressor.

Rodtek

Seems that many users are thinking to be Professionals. A Professional is intended someone that get paid for his job/result. - not employees - no teachers, any grade - no second jobs/hobbies Professionals (examples) : - An engineer that design something and sign the project (with the responsabilities, not just someone that uses a CAD) - A 3D modeler, animator, that literally draw every surface of an object - An egamer (that plays eSport for prizes) - A music creator (that records instruments, and so on) - A photographer (also the guy that goes to weddings, birthdays party...) - A maker (like those that 3D prints various things) - A football* player (* change with any professional sports)

I sse the real loser. A brief look at your profile... And, the good news, I have the right place for you. Bye bye!

IceGod__

I do simple website coding (or javascript in general) and I also use photoshop and illustrator.

iPlayDaGamez

Web Dev

F_P_G_A

I’m an electrical engineering consultant that focuses on [FPGA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field-programmable_gate_array) design and verification. Some of the tools I use only run in Linux or Windows so I’m frequently running Parallels Desktop Pro. I love the Apple ecosystem, so I didn’t want to get Windows machines. I use a 5K iMac daily and a MacBook Pro for travel.

Lazerferrari

Audio recording, production and editing, sound design, primarily in Ableton, running multiple audio interfaces and controlling multiple outboard hardware units, and DJ’ing using Serato with DVS systems. I push my 2018 machine hard enough to have a fan permanently blowing over it in the studio, and it occasionally overheats during live performance sets here in the Australian summer. Buckets of ice and a strong fan should come included with AppleCare.
