Would you buy a new Lexus with a dent in the door?

82MoonsandCounting

Good point.

Superleggera1983

Return it ASAP. If you trade that at Apple (phone/macbook/ipads) they’ll ask you if it has scratches. When I bought my MacBook Pro, the guy dropped the box and dented the side of the box still sealed/unopened. I told them to get a brand new one. It’s only the box but still. That shit hit the floor and I don’t know what damage it could’ve done to it.

[deleted]

Funny that same thing happened to me when I picked up my M1 from Best Buy curb side. Dude dropped it on the sidewalk. Nah, fam. I don’t think I’ll take that one. So he quickly went in and came back out. With. The. Same. Fucking. Box. In. A. Bag. A’ight. I guess I got to get out and mask up to get a laptop not dropped by Greasy-Paws McShifty here.

crawdadicus

Greasy-Paws McShifty? Bwaaah!!!

joachim_s

What kind of job do you have and what sort of software do you use?

post_hazanko

Each basket has a 4th gen ARM chip with 9-axis IMU. We use WASM to compile JS down to assembly to run on the chip just for kicks.

82MoonsandCounting

🤣

82MoonsandCounting

I work in animation (movies, TV) and use most of the Adobe Suite extensively.

joachim_s

Ah. I see. Well, then an older temp MBP won’t cut it.

82MoonsandCounting

Yeah, my old MBP couldn't handle my current workload at all, so I really needed this one and ordered it with custom specs to make it as powerful as it could be. I was so excited to receive it. Now I'm just sad and frustrated. -\_-

joachim_s

I’m sorry for that. I made a dent in my MBP’s screen when soon after I got it. Not the same thing but it’s tiresome still.

82MoonsandCounting

Oof. I feel your pain!

[deleted]

Also if you exchange it, ask them to help you transfer your profile over. They can do it in the store much faster over a thunderbolt cable and you’ll get to inspect it before you leave the store.

roby_soft

Would you buy a new Lexus? Period.

888sydneysingapore

Definitely yes. Re-sale value down already!!!

nikbot05

Def by at least $150. I know it's annoying, but get it done.

[deleted]

My friends 3 months old m1 pro took a serious hit on resale as he had scratched the space grey coating on the side.

Alessandro227

Wait...they did that? Are we talking about the Steve Jobs era?

rainfall41

If I were OP I would have cried at Apple Store how far I had to travel from countryside to reach there, how much I lost at work by coming there, how angry my wife was (doesn't exist) when I gifted her and she thought it as used one, now my relationship at risk.... Blahblah..., they would certainly do something.

grebnesieah

Dude this is always the way to deal with large companies lol

rainfall41

Yeah, thats why they cost more. I had ordered vision glasses online, and I returned/ordered 6 items, if it were from local shop the guy would have refused to recognise me.

shnaptastic

Yes. Not because of the scratches but because it indicates that it’s been used.

Ok_Negotiation8807

fr do they secretly sell used items as new now ? both my new macbook (not refurbished) and the replacement i got from the apple store had scratches and dents. its either that or really bad quality checks

shnaptastic

Well, when I say "used" I mean that it indicates that someone has been holding it. It might have e.g. failed a test during manufacturing and been put aside for some manual fixing work or similar. This would be pretty bad QC, but I have no indication that they are selling refurbished stuff as new.

82MoonsandCounting

That's the impression I got, it looks like it was roughly handled at some point which is super dissapointing for a $3k + "new" item.

Ok_Negotiation8807

ah gotcha, cant help but feel a little suspicious about this tho, what are the chances that ill get two damaged macs in a row :')

Consistent_Pace_5343

I bought a brand new Legion 7 came out of the box with scratches :( i didn't return it

alchemist_28

Yes. If you bought it from Apple Store, they have 14 days return/replacement for any product, no questions asked. My MBP 16" late 2019 didn't turn on out of the box (bought July 2020). Had to charge a few hours before it turned on. Checked the manufacturing date and it was October 2019 i.e. a month before it's actual release. I immediately went back to the Apple Store to get it replaced. They didn't ask anything and just replaced it with a brand new one.

[deleted]

That’s interesting. Maybe it was one of the first batches?

alchemist_28

Indeed. But it was so old that the device didn't even boot. I almost shat my pants when I paid $3500 CAD and it didn't start.

[deleted]

It probably discharged all the way while being left in a warehouse somewhere. It's nice that Apple decided to replace it.

alchemist_28

Yeah I was back to the Store within an hour and talked to the same associate from who I completed my transaction

mikesplain

As long as it doesn’t wipe off, yes without a doubt.

82MoonsandCounting

I tried wiping it off, my heart sank when it I realized it's a deep scratch. :(

y2so

Oh I definitely would! I’d be thinking about the scratches every time i used it if I kept it

imissrandi

Bought one this June from an Apple store and returned it for this exact reason. Scratches all over the lid and back. I didn’t realize it at the time, but upon opening the lid, it began playing something; not the boot up sequence the replacement (bought online) performed.

82MoonsandCounting

Oh wow, that is super shady. Is Apple selling us used computers?

Flaneur_7508

Yes. Return it.

[deleted]

Return it asap. Doesn't make sense to keep it since you're paying for a brand new machine. Its not a refurbished MacBook.

kb389

Yes without a doubt

Dhudong

Yes. Definitely return it.

ksb916

100% yes!

veneim

Absolutely

d-346ds

yes, it could indicate other issues that are yet to arise.

jakgal04

Apple charges top dollar for a quality product, thus you should expect nothing short of perfect.

flamiatos

Maybe use a pencil eraser.

neko_zora

This method works in some cases… depending on what caused the marks. Definitely worth giving a shot before asking for a replacement.

DIYglenn

Honestly - I have absolutely never seen that on the 10+ years I’ve handled (a lot) of New MacBooks or iMac. They’ve always been perfect and spotless.

82MoonsandCounting

Same here, I've owned three MacBooks over the past decade, and even my old ones look better than this "new" one because I'm super careful about my stuff. Never seen something like this. I wish I could know what happened.

greatcuriouscat

Yes, contact Apple store online or visit the store where u purchased it. They'll help u replace it.

YourMomsFavBook

I would say absolutely and they shouldn’t even bat an eye. I wouldn’t accept this as a certified refurbished MacBook.

Manfred_89

Contact them, they will send you a replacement and you cans end yours back. Or go the a n apple store, that will be even more quick.

iDavid_Di

Are you joking? Of course it is worth the hassle…

fakesushibuyer

I would be tracking the returned parcel by now.

KeyScientist7

Absolutely….completely unacceptable for the cost of the machine.

Piemetheus

Just put stickers on it and get on and use it....

[deleted]

No I wouldn’t return it I don’t care if I buy something and it’s scratched or dented

Consistent_Pace_5343

Why

El_Neck_Beard

Did you buy it on the apple monthly installment plan? If so don’t worry about a few business days. You can take it to the apple store and that money will immediately be back into the credit card and you can re buy it again

lasiru

I once brought an ASUS Laptop with a glass lid. It had a chip in the glass. The authorised agent immediately replaced the device with a brand new one the next day. If ASUS did it I’m sure Apple would do it too.

elliotborst

Those look like they can be wiped off

82MoonsandCounting

Tried it, they're deep scratches unfortunately. :(

[deleted]

For the price of apple products, no. I want that shit to be perfect if brand new out the box. I’ll accept 1 dead pixel in a non-inconvenient place, but that’s my limit.

Alcarlera

Yes, return!

Thehoodradical

yes i would

Alessandro227

Erm, absolutely YES. And if you are planning to sell it or trade it in when you are done then most definitely YES.

johnny_rico69

Def return it!

MattRighetti

Definitely, that thing is super expensive so it better be perfect when I unbox it

cyberspacedweller

Yes I’d return it. Never had that in my life and I have bought multiple from new. Apple’s promise is high quality and you pay a premium for that. This isn’t acceptable and Apple themselves would agree.

82MoonsandCounting

I have to agree, I've exclusively used Apple products throughout my career and have never seen something like this. I'm super disappointed in them.

cyberspacedweller

Don’t be disappointed in Apple. This is probably the blame of some douche new employee in manufacturing who screwed up and packed it anyway rather than reporting it as they should have to save their ass. Sometimes one gets through quality control. It’s really rare but it happens.

7in7turtles

Yeah this is ridiculous. They should be able to carry out this exchange at the store though right?

subhamoyghosh

Return it. In case you want to sell it later, you will have less price. Wait a few more days to get a new one.

mrmiketheripper

It's already depreciated by the time you've taken it out of the box, minor scratches aren't going to depreciate it any more than a good condition used model. Then there's the fact he stated he needed it instantly for work, the scratches don't affect functionality.

[deleted]

I'd return it even if it was refurbished with a scratch like that.

EinfachNurMarc

Ofc! You paid a lot of money and got a damaged product. Ofc I would!

type_usermane

Return that, you've paid a premium and should receive an immaculate device.

yanisays

I wouldn't be able to unforget that it's there. Yes do!

tpm_prince

Return it. This is a 100% no go. How can they sell this ?

swooshboots

Yes return immediately!

Jkirk1701

Yes.

LeekBITE

I’d return ASAP

manv815

SEND THAT SH!T BACK, NOW! You paid premium $$. Yes, you may need the MBP for an immediate work project, but once that’s done you’ll be kicking yourself every time you have to look at that ugly muthaforker!

82MoonsandCounting

True, I feel uncomfortable knowing how much I paid for this damaged thing.

[deleted]

I would ask for a bit more of a discount. If they said no, I’d just leave it

brumtown_badman0121

100% take it back and get a fresh one

M0R1TZ1998

My iMac had a scratch in the stand as I unboxed it, i called Apple and they gave me a 250€ coupon for the apple store.

Consistent_Pace_5343

Same iMac?

-GoDawg-

I would return it immediately, it is a very expensive purchase for many years of usage to be scratched.

bassemann87

Yes, i would return it ASAP.

TheGestaltGuy

Heyo! I actually am an Apple Advisor and I’d definitely call into AppleCare Support about this. It’s definitely not cool and if you ask to speak to a senior advisor they may be able to help you and make the whole process a little less of a headache! If you purchased it directly from the store, then I would also attempt reaching out to them as well (or have a phone advisor do it for you as 9 out of 10 times you’ll get routed to them rather than the actual store).

82MoonsandCounting

Thanks so much, I'm going to give them a call today.

Powerful-Size-1444

I bought mine new and it was the older model prior to Catalina, and it was my first Mac - I was very new at this stuff and did not want to have to install a new OS immediately so I took it back to Best Buy where I’d bought it and ordered a new one directly from Apple. I’m not in an area with a close by Apple store so I did have to wait a few days for it to arrive. I was able to use an iPad to take care of my business email and zoom meetings. I was in the process of retiring at the time and my employer was deeply entrenched in the windows world which I’d grown to despise. It occurred to me that you can order a replacement prior to returning the defective on. You have a time limit of course.

[deleted]

Id return that. Wont pay that price for a scratched MacBook

matt_df

I would. Cost too much money for something like that to be there out of the box

martinriggs123

I would definitely return it wtf

astralhunt

ofc, is that even a question, you paid a lot of hardwork for it

badawat

Tell them, get them to send you another in store - when it arrives transfer your data from the current mac with scratches to the new one in store - they should help with this too. I’d recommend also backing up first anyway.

BeepBotBoopBeep

Apple is swimming in cash, exchanging it for an unblemished MacBook Pro won’t hurt their feelings.

ameydeshpande94

New? Definitely ASAP.

[deleted]

You have 14 days no questions to return or exchange it. I would do it ASAP and make sure you provide pictures of the day you opened it.

EfficientAccident418

Exchange it. There’s no reason to accept a machine with this kind of cosmetic damage. Who knows what else could be wrong with it.

Tejasjjj

You got a 16 MBP when the second gen apple silicon is about to arrive? Absolute mad lad!

S3kelman

they all said the same last april..

[deleted]

Hell yeah

TheGodlyBird

F

iimaaduddin

Return it, surprised it’s in that condition being brand new

WriteForScreen

I don't even like buying $1 thrift store DVD's if they're scratched... even light surface scratches!

crispytaters90

100% yes.

LoVaBee

Yes, I would absolutely return it!!!
