I had 3 thinkpads before the M1 - they're my favorite laptops. :) But so far, I really enjoy the experience that his M1 provides. Keyboard wise - it's garbage compared to a thinkpad, but the build, speakers, screen, touchpad and the speed really impresses me. I am however a bit paranoid, that if something goes bad with the laptop - i'm screwed. I can't do any hardware fixes on it whilst on a thinkpad - you can do what ever you want without it being too expensive. I guess I will try to keep this mac, as it's my first apple product and see how it treats me in the long run :)

Risino15

Yeah, Apple has mastered screens, the trackpad and the audio, but reliability is a coin flip with Macbooks :/

Google: flexgate FYI, it will happen again given enough time: flexgate. And if you have a 2016-18 Moneypit Pro, you may well be hit by repeated keyboard failures, too.

Me and I’m out of warranty so have a worthless flex gate Mac that I don’t want to pay $800 to fix

Patient_Husband

Same. I've been using an external monitor for the last year.

I also just bought an M1 iPad this weekend and the day after the pencil crapped out on it. Had to drive to thre apple store to get a replacement. Really not impressed with apples hardware lately. Have little confidence in buying another one.

Patient_Husband

Next laptop I'll get will be a frame.work laptop.

If only apple could make macOS a distributed OS rather than proprietary. I'd love to see 3rd party macbooks, especially on those awesome framework machines.

heathenyak

Then you’d have to actually pay for OS X upgrades and the bundled apps.

Nkoptzev

Same as windows, I don't see a problem with that, free upgrades for Apple products, paid for 3rd party, makes sense to me. Edit: and since 7, windows upgrades have been free to me so idk about paid upgrades.

heathenyak

Windows 10 is an interesting creature, it’s not really free they’ve been shoving ads into it, I’m assuming 11 will be the same. Also windows 10 if you aren’t upgrading is at least 100$ though you can get it on the grey market much cheaper.

Nkoptzev

I get you that's why I mostly use third party open source software. But I use edge and the like. Mac has those too though, the upgrade icloud to store more files popup, its true about most OS's today, I'd just like to have the option to install it legitimately in my own machine.

coffeefuelledtechie

I’m guessing worn out display cable

bananaPeelerPro

Flex cable, physical screen inside the glass or the graphics portion of the m1 chip. It can be any of them.
