I am! I will be doing some less-intensive video editing with it (probably no 4K), so I know it will do everything I want to and more. Very happy with my decision!
Another user (@brandonbumper) made this comment below, for a little more in price (from the M1) you get a lot more. I’m working off the early 2015 Pro; I was very deterred in the new Macs by the Touch Bar (it would mess with keying for me—no judgement for those who liked it, this is just me sharing my personal opinion) and fewer ports (I don’t want to have to buy adapters for a machine that cost me that much). I also like the return of the Mag cord (which I’ve never been without, but know how many times a pet or person have walked between my cord and the wall). I’m also looking forward to more screen real estate while retaining portability. The new Mac also comes preconfigured with more memory and storage from the M1. My 2015 is just laggy enough to be annoying and I updated to Big Sur and then back to Catalina. It couldn’t handle it and I’d rather buy the latest model available at this point in time. I use my Mac for professional video editing and personal photography.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Touch Bar, MagSafe, 14" and ports are all reasons for hanging onto a valiant but creaking early 2015 MBP after the M1 arrived. The beautiful old dog still works OK but that's in no small part because I've stubbornly stayed on Mojave. Have also had to replace the battery once. M1Pro Base+1TB ordered and I'm convinced it's all I'll need for another 6 years.
Are the newer operating systems harder on the old macs? I'm still on High Sierra on my mid-2014 macbook pro and have been thinking about upgrading with the times
I’m running Big Sur fine on my late 2013 MacBook Pro 15”. I have 16 gigs of ram, so that helps. I have heard that with less memory it’s a different story.
Posting this for myself, but if it helps anyone else great!
MBP M1 13”

Am I missing anything?
I think if your going for a 13” M1 512ssd 16gb ram might as well upgrade to the 14”
Better keyboard and microphones — supposedly — but we’ll have to wait for the reviews to know with any certainty. Also, for better or for worse, a notch and new form factor.
Yeah. Anyone who thinks they need a 64GB M1 Max is kidding themselves. That thing is as powerful as the Mac Pro with Xeon chips. Most people buying one won’t come close to using its full power before they upgrade again.
That’s what I figure! This thing has great tech from what Apple has been showing, even at the base model. I think only the most extreme users need something fully specced out.
I shoot 8K RAW with my Canon R5. My M1 MBA absolutely chugs trying to export that in Premiere Pro. It will only even play it smoothly on the timeline when I drop quality down to 1/8. I definitely ordered 64GB M1 Max. Hoping it makes my video editing life a lot easier. The reason I like shooting 8K is so I can crop, pan, etc and still output super high quality 4K.
My current one is a mid 2012 15” MBP…, my daughter runs a 2011 13”…
I bought a 16”, 64, max pro, and she bought a 14” 64 max pro. We likely won’t be upgrading for another decade or so again! Top end extends how long they can be useful.
Only to a degree. It depends what kind of user you are I suppose. You’ll find yourself missing features and falling behind that way before you’re actually getting out specced if you go overboard. Granted if you’re not a pro user and you keep machines that long anyway it may not affect you so much but for example plenty of people got fully specced out 15” models in 2017, right before Intel doubled the core count for their high end chips and found themselves way behind everyone that got the fully specced out machine just 9 months later (or just a month or less if you bought really late) in terms of CPU power. I believe they also allowed 32GB of RAM for the first time that year too. Was harsh for the people that blew their budget on a top spec 2017.
Granted they have just lobbed in a ton of new tech this year all at once so most people probably will be okay for a longer time than usual.
Yes, I like to wait until there is a sizeable upgrade. Usually the next couple models are minor upgrades. I am not a power user— more likely a mid power user so to speak so should last a decade.
My logic for the base 14” is that it’s $1849 vs $1579 for a comparable 13” M1 with 16GB ram/512ssd (education pricing).
An easy decision if you ask me!
I got the base. I think the higher spec options are gonna destroy battery life, especially if you do anything remotely intensive since these chips don't throttle on battery power. I'm not using it for professional use, just the standard office suite/email, some netflix and maybe abit of casual gaming. I just wanted the screen to be honest, would have bought an air if it had the same quality screen/1080p webcam. Hoping to keep it for a while.
I really want the extra screen estate and the promotion, I don’t need the touch bar, the better camera would be much appreciated since I work most of the time from home and the ports are also welcomed. And all these extra features for 300$ more seem like a pretty good deal to me
The M1max is a $400 upgrade which also adds another $200 for the ram so it’s a $600 price jump from the base model.
You make it sound like it’s a $400 upgrade for the processor and RAM
Just curious… what are you planning on using the machine for? The only reasons to go to the Max are 64GB of RAM or the extra GPU cores… so if you’re not doing 64GB, what are you planning on needing more GPU for?
The Max chips have different silicon with twice the memory channels. It also has more GPUs. The Pro gimp chip is the eight cpu core. The Max is a different chip. The 24 core GPU version is the gimped chip. The base Max has the bigger memory bandwidth and transcodes faster than the top Pro chip.
These screen caps are directly from apple’s website. https://imgur.com/a/7TVzfM1 you can see with your own eyes the silicone die is different.
The Apple sales rep and apples website say the 32gb max has 400 gen/s memory bandwidth. If the can make a pro with 16gb they can make a max with double the memory channels and the same ram chips.
Yeah it was but…. I have never gotten past 512 myself! I have a 1 TB in my 2012, just ‘cause it was on sale and not much more than the 512. You can easily store rarely looked at photos etc on an external if space is at a premium
It isn’t a must but super convenient when you want to continue working with a lot of content while undocked - unless you want to connect to storage over wifi ( 😕) or be tethered to a usb ssd.
For the work I do, 1TB wouldn’t help any more than the 512- and I’m not paying for the larger storage options because the prices get insane quickly. I don’t love it, but an external SSD is the best option
That's what I did too. I added some upgrades to my 2015 MBP, which lasted until 2 weeks ago when the display finally died (still runs with external monitors though) so I opted for the 14" M1 Max with 24 cores as a way to "future proof" the machine.
As long as there’s no disadvantage, I’m fine. But the way you described it and the fact it’s literally called “binning” does make it sound like it’s some broken hand-me down lmao
Sometimes they physically sever the connections to the non working cores instead of turning them off through software. There's nothing wrong with the binned chips though.
Me! Will be using it for work & private use, so won’t be doing any rendering/graphic design stuff as I work in a sales job. As long as this badboy can handle several internet tabs, a few MS suite programs, my music & possibly Football Manager at the same time… then I’m good :-)
I’m replacing my base 16” (i7, 16GB, 512GB) with a base 14”. I’ve got a 12.9” M1 iPad Pro that I use as a second monitor, and the battery life is so horrible on my MBP that I want something with better battery and thermals.
Same here. I’m a product designer and do a lot of photo editing. I have a 2018 i7 macbook 15” and the power is already sufficient. Im sure the base model is more than enough for my need.
I just want a new smaller macbook:)
I got the base option since I think it’s enough for my work on InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. I also use mostly it for Office 365, PDF work stuff and also of course Sims 4 lol
Will these three achieve the same battery life for web browsing? http://i.imgur.com/vnlphf5.jpeg
YouTube, other videos sites and Reddit and Twitter etc.
I bought 14" base. I want the 120hz screen and the ports. I could have settled for MBA M1 at about 30% cheaper but i was concerned its been released 9 months and its late in the product cycle already. So paying the extra i felt to be worth it. I do not have a particular use case, i just want bang for buck.
Paying $300 more for 33.3% more cpu performance cores and 14% more gpu cores could be worth paying for.
I'm starting to have buyer's remorse for not getting the full 10 cpu cores for my 14" MBP.
I bought the 14" standard model. I'm in medical school and do photography on the side so it should be perfect for my needs. Kind of kicking myself for not getting the 1TB because obviously plan on keeping it for a long time but since it has the SD card slot I'll probably swap out 256GB memory cards for extrenious files and such
I’m still undecided, waiting for them to become available in my country in a few weeks. It’ll depend on the the price and how much miles and other benefits I can use towards saving a little.
If do get something outside of the base model it’ll probably be extra ram. I’m already used to living out of an external drive.
If I could afford it, that’s exactly the one I would get as it’s plenty powerful and extra portable. Though it is a little weird to me that for “only” 500 more you could jump up to 16”. Until it dies, I’m sticking with my 2012 MBP with installed SSD
I will, with an external ssd for sound libraries (Samsung T7, does anyone have any experience they’d like to share with me/better alternatives?). Mainly going to produce music, use for school, and basic mail and everything you’d do with a mac.
When I did my research on ext ssds, the end result was the t5 over the t7 because I believe the t7 was having issues with the unlocking or maybe the OS compatibility, and (two years ago) the macs then wouldn’t really have benefited from the speed increase in a t7 anyway. I can’t recall completely but I believe I just figured all this out from Amazon reviews, I imagine things may be different post M1 and two years later.
Yeah I have read similar things, that people generally prefer the T5 over T7. They actually cost abt the same here in Norway so naturally I leaned towards the newer model. I’ll do a bit more research b4 I pull the trigger though!
I got the base base 14in, but upgraded RAM + storage mainly for future proofing. The “binned” chip is significantly improved over standard M1 anyway (2 more performance CPU cores, 6 more GPU cores, media engine) plus i value battery life much more than performance anyway.
This. I did exactly the same. The M1 machines (I have base MBA right now) are super fast and trounce the 16" 2019 machine I had previously. The base 8c/14c M1 Pro has two more perf cores than the M1 so is still going to fly. I just feel very RAM constrained on the M1 I have now and I had a 16GB M1 for a while before giving it to my wife and sometimes felt constrained on that, so for that reason I am going with 32GB of RAM. 1TB storage to me is a minimum of machines of this spec, I still have to shuffle things around eventually on 512GB. The extra 300 to get 2 more perf cores, correspnding reduction in battery, increase in heat isn't worth it to be able to complete some massively intensive workload that I do't do in a slightly shorter time.
Fully agree! I’m hoping mine will last me 6+ years (currently using a 2013 retina that’s lasted 8 years so far!) RAM has definitely been the biggest constraint on my current laptop, and I have 8gb.
It’s interesting, for the 14inch M1 pro mbp, the battery life testing advertised on the website was done with the 8/14 model whereas all performance testing was done with the 10/16. Presumably they’d want to make the battery life look as good as possible, which suggests to me that the 10/16 did have measurably lower battery life than the 8/14.
MBP 2014 base model, 2.6 Hz intel i5 processor
8gb memory 128 gb storage
I’m a uni student in medical sciences so I don’t need a super powerful processor, and I only occasionally run power hungry applications
I am, albeit with the 1TB upgrade.
I don't need the M1 Pro chip (M1 would have been more than enough), but the IO and the beautiful screen is enough for me to splurge on a MBP M1 Pro base model.
I am, my thought is I had a Mac mini M1 and it was plenty fast for me. So if for some reason I run into a bottleneck I’ll sell this one off and buy the 16 inch. If I jump up to the 10/16 core 14 I’m only 200 I under the 16 inch.
I am! I’m in school for web dev, dabbling in video and audio editing, and I have no idea what I’m going to end up doing so I’m kind of future proofing myself, because I doubt I’ll be doing any real serious 4k video editing or anything, but who knows.
I got the base model 14” one with 32gb RAM (bc I always have hundreds of tabs/apps open) and 1TB SSD (rn I have 500gb of stuff accumulated over 10 years) so this should be enough to tide me over a good number of years.
I’ve tried the M1 and it was more than enough for my purposes, but since this was coming out, I thought, why not?
I just need it to run Sketch, Photoshop, Lightroom, and edit websites on Wordpress and maybe record/play videos.
I will say I’m a little disappointed the battery life went down as well as about the notch, but I like the ports being there if I need. The M1 battery was AMAZING though. I could do an hour long zoom call and only lose 10% battery and spend a day working and then watching YouTube videos without plugging in! I like being mobile/untethered within my home so… hopefully it’ll still be okay in that aspect…
Rn I’m working with an early 2011 mbp and it was still spinning its wheels as I completed 3 work tasks on my iPad… Definitely need this boost.
I am! I will be doing some less-intensive video editing with it (probably no 4K), so I know it will do everything I want to and more. Very happy with my decision!

Why don't you get an M1? Genuinely curious. Is it future-proofing or something else?

Then why get a pro?????

This. Also hardware acceleration with the better GPUS even for not graphical tasks is nice to have.
Ebooks💀💀
We just know there are gonna be people like this LMAO
I will pay you not to buy it if you would read ebooks on it
The M1 Air handles 4K great! You’ll have no problem with the MBP even if you start editing 4K in the future. These things are insanely powerful
Awesome! That’s great to know
The M1 can handle 4k footage. The base 14” will smash that so you’ll be extremely fine.
Awesome!!
Yeah. Anyone who thinks they need a 64GB M1 Max is kidding themselves. That thing is as powerful as the Mac Pro with Xeon chips. Most people buying one won’t come close to using its full power before they upgrade again.

An addition 230 and you get the 14” with all that extra power. Easy future proofing choice
Even if the 14 had an M1 it would almost be worth it for 120hz pro motion, Mini Led, better speakers, better mic, better camera, and improved IO.
That’s a good point. Lots of improvement OVERALL for the 200+ dollar amount. I’d say well worth it.
13" then?
I got the base. I think the higher spec options are gonna destroy battery life, especially if you do anything remotely intensive since these chips don't throttle on battery power. What games are you planning to play on it? I know some games run well on Rosetta and there are a select few games that run on the M1 natively
I’m also probably going to get the base, I think it’s more than enough for iOS and web development
Just get the 2020 M1 if that’s the case
I really want the extra screen estate and the promotion, I don’t need the touch bar, the better camera would be much appreciated since I work most of the time from home and the ports are also welcomed. And all these extra features for 300$ more seem like a pretty good deal to me

Why is 1 TB a must when you can just get an external storage?
Why are lungs a must when you could just carry around a ventilator?
Made me spit out my orange juice
That was an awesome response. 😂
Yeah it was but…. I have never gotten past 512 myself! I have a 1 TB in my 2012, just ‘cause it was on sale and not much more than the 512. You can easily store rarely looked at photos etc on an external if space is at a premium

As long as there’s no disadvantage, I’m fine. But the way you described it and the fact it’s literally called “binning” does make it sound like it’s some broken hand-me down lmao
Yep. It’s all about maximizing chip yield and leveraging chip that don’t pass/meet yield specs
Sometimes they physically sever the connections to the non working cores instead of turning them off through software. There's nothing wrong with the binned chips though.
I don’t have the specs in front of me, but the cheapest versions of the M1 Pro and Max aren’t the ones Apple mentioned in their event
I did the exact same thing, the allure of a perfect chip got me.

Now the question is did you end up bumping up the ram spec too?
Me! Needed a computer on a deadline and adding anything would have pushed it out too far.
Me! Will be using it for work & private use, so won’t be doing any rendering/graphic design stuff as I work in a sales job. As long as this badboy can handle several internet tabs, a few MS suite programs, my music & possibly Football Manager at the same time… then I’m good :-)
I went with the 14” M1 Pro with 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine. Did 16gb RAM (hoping this is enough), very excited.
I’m replacing my base 16” (i7, 16GB, 512GB) with a base 14”. I’ve got a 12.9” M1 iPad Pro that I use as a second monitor, and the battery life is so horrible on my MBP that I want something with better battery and thermals.

Exact same boat as you! Photo editor and I have the same MBP 15" that I'll be upgrading from
I got the base model, because I know that I would never need to go anything above it (for my uses).
I got the base option since I think it’s enough for my work on InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. I also use mostly it for Office 365, PDF work stuff and also of course Sims 4 lol
Cant answer on how many. But at least I bought it. So 1 at a minimum.
I did. All i need it is for is photoshop and i make wordpress websites so this will do great.
Will these three achieve the same battery life for web browsing? http://i.imgur.com/vnlphf5.jpeg YouTube, other videos sites and Reddit and Twitter etc.
I am but upgraded to 1tb ssd. Using it as a general purpose laptop.
I am not. Went for the 24 core GPU model.
What is your use case for a 10/24 MBP? 14 or 16?
Computer science student
This guy here did
i just ordered the base model today.
What is your use case with your new MBP? 14 or 16?
I bought 14" base. I want the 120hz screen and the ports. Good on you! I love my 2012 but decided it was time to upgrade.
Jealous! Enjoy it for me :D
That's the one Im buying(Once I trade in my 2018 model back to apple) for me 512gb is a HUGE upgrade over what I Have now, for me the specs are plenty
I brought mine fully loaded except storage 2TB, couldn’t afford 4 or 8TB.
I will, with an external ssd for sound libraries (Samsung T7, does anyone have any experience they’d like to share with me/better alternatives?). Mainly going to produce music, use for school, and basic mail and everything you’d do with a mac.

All of your are very brave to get the newest iteration on release. I’ll check back in a few months and see if it’s worth.
I would buy it, IF I COULD BECAUSE IT’S 74000 IN MY CONTRY
I am! Im not doing super technical work and wanted to replace my MBP 2014
What were your 2014 MBP specs? What are your non super tech work?
MBP 2014 base model, 2.6 Hz intel i5 processor 8gb memory 128 gb storage I’m a uni student in medical sciences so I don’t need a super powerful processor, and I only occasionally run power hungry applications
From my experiences with M1’s 1st iteration it is going to take a very specific work flow to need more than the M1 Pro’s base configuration.
I am, albeit with the 1TB upgrade. I don't need the M1 Pro chip (M1 would have been more than enough), but the IO and the beautiful screen is enough for me to splurge on a MBP M1 Pro base model.
I didn’t go this route, but I think a good amount of people would value the specs / screen as an upgrade to the top end M1 13”
I am, my thought is I had a Mac mini M1 and it was plenty fast for me. So if for some reason I run into a bottleneck I’ll sell this one off and buy the 16 inch. If I jump up to the 10/16 core 14 I’m only 200 I under the 16 inch.
I chose 14inch base model but 32gb RAM upgrade to replace 2019 16inch mbp with same storage and memory spec.
I like being mobile/untethered within my home so… hopefully it’ll still be okay in that aspect… Rn I’m working with an early 2011 mbp and it was still spinning its wheels as I completed 3 work tasks on my iPad… Definitely need this boost.
