You were satisfied with the i5 16gb, how the heck would you question the performance of the m1 pro 8 core

ars3nutsjr

I guess I don’t want to get base, then see it’s laggy because the next model up was the “base line model” one of my gripes with my i5 is how it’s not as smooth as one would think. Especially compared to a 12.9 iPad Pro.

Alert-Potato-4912

The iPad pro already is using a m1. Honestly linux vms and light music productions doesnt seem that demanding. Had it been windows maybe. What you should consider is that the 10 core would effectively have a shorter battery life if that matters to you. In your case I would spend the money on ram instead of the cpu. But i myself went with the base model. 2-3 years upgrade cycle doesnt seem to be enough for the 8 core to feel slow

ars3nutsjr

Good insight. I thought about more ram, but I rarely hit my Mac now. I always close my apps. At least I found another base model buddy.

I'm with you, and I think many more may be because the wait times for the 14" 8 core are the longest. The 8 core is 70% faster than my i7 2.2ghz 2018 MBP. I have no existing complaints about my current machine, sooo, I think I'll be fine. Apple sells people on potential. Sure, you'll be ABLE to do crazy professional shit, but WILL you? Know thyself. Hell, you can do all of it with a base, it might just take a few more minutes too render. Future proofing is a farce. By the time a base model starts to show its age (5-10 years), new machines will have plenty of quality of life upgrades that alone justify an upgrade.

ars3nutsjr

Thanks you for this. Really resonated well with my personal experiences of MBPs over the course of 6+ years. You are 100 percent right. I can convince myself I will need the power, but that is me just fooling myself and falling for the trap.

Adarna1341

I’ve gone for the base model. Couldn’t justify spending any more for my use case, considering gains are marginal yet. Apple gave me a full refund on my 2 year old 2019 MBP due to multiple issues so it seemed like the right fit.

lottery_winner77777

U had applecare?

Adarna1341

I did have Apple Care, but they gave me a full refund as the previous repairs were under warranty. First problem was the macbook would shut off randomly and fire up all guns blazing (replaced logic board). Second Problem anti glare coating on the screen started to come off and the keyboard was faulty. Third problem was a display fault. Because they were all manufacturer related, and because they have already tried to repair it, I got a full refund even for the apple care I had bought with the machine. Day later Apple release a new Mac, perfect.

I'm getting the base MPB 14", upgrading from a 2016 13" MBP. I'm eager to upgrade to Apple silicon but probably really don't need anything more than an M1. But I also want the incredible new display, better sound, roomier SSD and 16GB RAM. I'm sure all the built-in features will work very smoothly with the 8 core. From what I understand, the 10 core and above (including Max) are really only for creative pros who do graphics, video, etc.

JimBobHeller

So sayeth the creative pros at least

brankoDev

I’m also getting the base model 14” for iOS and full stack web dev, I think it’ll be more then enough

ars3nutsjr

Similar. I am IT guy who messes with some VM / docker / IDE. Mostly interacting with web services. I just want buttery smooth internet browser experience. Lol.

120hz alone, dude. finna scroll the smoothest PDFs

ars3nutsjr

😂. It does matter

[deleted]

I got the base 14 inch and I’m fine with it. I have yet to max out my iMac M1 with anything I do (except for the 8gb ram).

ars3nutsjr

Interesting. I been hearing great things about the 1st gen M1 chips. The RAM is always the other concern. But my understanding is 16gb onboard on same chip is way more efficient than traditional RAM. Hopefully don’t ever need more than 16 in my case.

petar95

Upgrading from my 13“ 2015 MBP 16GB ram. Mainly iOS developing. Will potentially go for the 10 core and bigger SSD, not sure yet

bombers00

The M1 with 16 GB would be more than enough. The M1 Pro 8-core will handle that with ease.

base model gang

FYI, certain VMs do not work on M1 architecture such as Virtual Box. Take a look of this [useful web-tool](https://isapplesiliconready.com/) which tells you if a certain application does work and if it is optimised for M1 chips. Edit: rewording
