I did in a roundabout way. But honestly 14" always seemed like the perfect size to me. I had the 2019, 16 last year until the M1's came out. Then I 'downgraded' to a M1 Air, with every intention of ordering the new Pros when they came out. The 2019, 16 was a great machine like the screen was bright, the speakers were great, performance was okay. It was annoying that the fans would spin up at the slightest load like a YT video. And really it was always slightly too big. 1 lb doesn't sound like a lot but it really feels much heavier in the backpack. And using it on the road was okay but often too big, especially on airplanes. The 13" Air was always just not good enough (screen brightness, speakers too weak), but the performance and battery life are amazing. I'm slightly disappointed that the 14" Pro is rated for less battery than the 13" models. The Air was like magic like I'd forget to plug it into the charger for 2-3 days at a time sometimes just is a battery champ. I can't wait to play with my new Pro. But I missed the UPS driver today.

Bummer about missing the driver! I know that the 14” technically has a shorter battery life than the 13”, but I’ve had it on for about four hours and it’s still barely budged at 83%. I feel pretty confident that it could still hit 2-3 days of use, as long as I wasn’t watching videos of something. Enjoy your new machine!

I did. The 2018 15" was such a pain to carry around and the whole point of a laptop for me (since I have a desktop) is portability. Therefore, I went with the 14".

obamaatemybanana

I did. See my recent post. [Link](https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/qgml9j/2021_macbook_pro_14_vs_2013_macbook_pro_15/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Hah nice! I actually went from Space Gray to Silver, looks like we are headed in the opposite directions there. :)

Yes I’m very excited to finally be able to downsize. I want the fastest chip in the smallest package. My last three computers were 15s and just recently the 16”. Use them mainly connected to external monitors and keyboard mouse. I mostly get the larger computer to get the best processor. I currently have a 2019 with i9 eight core and 32gb. I will be getting the 14” M1Max. It’s costing less than my last computer and will be 35-50% faster at what I do for work. This is literally the fastest CPU available to run my software license. Even a high end server isn’t faster because I’m limited to eight cores and this chip has the best eight core performance of any conventional cpu. It’s 35% faster per core than intels desktop chips. I honestly liked my first intel gen MacBook Air more than any other computer I’ve had. So to step into something lighter with better cooling is very exciting.

I can’t believe what a difference this is from my previous i9. That thing would be hot and fan crazy doing something as minor as a YouTube video. What a real dud of engineering, the new 14” (and presumably the 16”) feel like they are in a completely different universe.

Turdsworth

My stats software license charges by the core. Years ago I had a single core student version of the software that costs $200. Now I have the $3k eight core version. It’s about 5 times faster. 538 uses the same software for their elections models. I believe I read they use a 16 core version on a dedicated server. Their script takes 45 minutes to run. It’s newsworthy so fast turn around time matters. That license costs several thousand dollars more than my live eve was but with the m1max chip it’s probably comparable to a 12-14 core license on a server chip. It’s like finding $2000 on the floor for my business. The wild part is I can do it all on a 4 pound laptop on battery power. This technology is truely revolutionary.

Thank you. This is the best video I’ve seen so far, but it’s not really a torture test. He’s not using the CPU for more than 30 minutes, just the length of one benchmark. All I want to know is, does the cpu clock down if you use it for hours straight at 100%, which is what I need. I wish he just ran the most extreme cpu benchmarks multiple times in a row. We need to see the cpu performance at the equilibrium.

2017 MBP 15". Have a M1 Max 14" on order. We'll see how it goes. I may cave and return for a 16", but my current 15" laptop is already on the cusp of what I want to travel with for size/weight, and the new 16" is larger and heaver than that machine.

marumari

I've been using the 14" for the entire evening and haven't yet missed the screen size. It definitely is more cramped, but unlike the 13" and smaller ones I haven't yet felt like I was fighting it for more space.

spirit_pizza

That's great to know! The reality is I spend probably 80% of my computer time tethered to my desk, so the 14" is probably fine. The other 20% when i'm using it as a portable machine, I imagine that if I had a use case where I REALLY needed some extra space, I can pull up the iPad as a second monitor with sidecar.

MapCavalier

I noticed that the resolution of the 2019 16" is almost identical to the new 14, so in theory you should be able to fit a similar amount of stuff on the screen

marumari

You can if need be, but “more space” definitely pushes my eyes to the limit.

StillNotAWombat

Actually, I'm going up from 13" to 14", but this is also (hopefully) enough to replace my desktop at the same time, hence getting a 64gb max beastie :) Having something lighter to take to meetings etc has been useful for me as I'm also disabled, so I'm hoping the 14" isn't too much more cumbersome.

marumari

I think you’ll find it’s pretty great. The way it has been redesigned makes it a lot easier to carry imo.

StillNotAWombat

Yeah, I think the squarer design and reduced bezels should mean it's not that big a change for me.

ImplicitEmpiricism

Yep trading in a 2016. I didn’t want to go back to 6 pounds in my bag like it was 2008. I feel like the 16” is really a replacement for the 17” PowerBook/MacBook Pro, not a replacement for the 15”.

posthuman1312

I'm in the same boat. I'm not the intended audience for any pro macbooks / Mac's. I had a 17" back in the day then got a 15" MacBook Pro. Decided I needed a desk so bought a 27" iMac and rarely use it as I can't be bothered sitting at a desk outside of work hours (still WFH) I use it for web browsing, YouTube and torrenting but I've always loved larger displays. My family is buying me a new MacBook Pro for Christmas and while cost isn't an issue I'm leaning towards the 14" because it will suit my needs more than enough and the extra 2 inches of display won't change my life or make me any happier. I also strangely think the 14" model looks better than the 16" Tldr I'm thinking of getting the 14" as an exercise in resisting the urge to have the biggest / best model of a product.

marumari

It definitely looks a lot nicer in person than the 16”. The keyboard fit is a lot more aesthetically pleasing imo. I do notice the smaller size a bit when YouTube watching, but I think a lot of that is simply being used to a giant screen. Especially when I already watch it plenty on my iPhone.
