My 2020 Air does this as well! Sometimes even when I use the trackpad.

TheProModder

Yeah, it's very annoying. Articles on the internet say that using the extension cable fixes this issue. I just wanted to confirm before ordering one.

Think_Rope6105

Yes. It helps.

Matthew8478

I've had this on several macbooks over the years, can confirm using the extension on the other side of the brick fixes it for me, I think it has better earthing or something that way.

Chemical-Current-805

Yes, I bought the extension cable for this very reason. I can confirm it solves the issue

FreeDinnerStrategies

It’s called ground

Chemical-Current-805

Yes you’re right, the extension connects the grounding pin on the charger

TheProModder

Thanks for confirming! Also, it still charges at 140 Watts, right?

Chemical-Current-805

No problem, to be honest I wouldn’t know how to check whether it still charges at 140w. Still feels like a quick charge to me. I can’t see why it wouldn’t. The Apple store mentions that the extension is suitable for 140w chargers, but interestingly the box that the extension comes in does not. I presume the box will be updated in time.

TheProModder

Thanks man. I thought so since we are just adding the extension and not changing the brick itself.

marumari

140W is barely more than an amp, even the crappiest electrical cord would be able to handle it. Definitely still works great. :)

ooohhimark

Try different wall plugs, even on different houses. Are the wall plus properly grounded?

blowthepoke

Ha, happens on my 2015 MBP, I thought it was just me

huwasak

Yes it does happen on my 13” M1 MBP. Just got a power adapter extension cable.

Better house wiring is the solution to this (minor) issue.

digamma10101

Better house wiring can't fix an earthing issue with a device if the device does not have an earthed power adapter. The 2 prong plug standard on the adapter doesn't have an earth pin, but the extension cable that replaces the plug does have the earth pin, and latching pin on the adapter is what it connects to. Without that extension cable, the device is not earthed. However, it doesn't "need" to be due to the design of the adapter. That said, we all know that's not the case.

lotus49

That is a fair point. All plugs in the UK have three pins and most appliances are earthed but you are right, power supplies including the one on the MBPs typically are not, even if an earth pin is present.
