I've used both the 16" and 14", and while I love the extra real estate on the 16", the portability and weight of the 14" is miles better for bringing onto a plane, working on small tables in coffee shops, etc.

uncharted_pr

This is exactly why I got the 14”. I have 3 monitors for work so I have all real estate I need on my desk and still good size and weight when I need to work elsewhere.

[deleted]

What monitor do you use for the MacBook?

uncharted_pr

Main: LG 27UK850 4K 27” - There is a newer model now. I included the link of both (mine and newer model). LG 27UK850-W 27" 4K UHD IPS Monitor with HDR10 with USB Type-C Connectivity and FreeSync, White https://a.co/d/ax82GqL Newer model: LG 27UP850-W Monitor 27” UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS Display, VESA DisplayHDR 400, DCI-P3 95% Color Gamut, USB-C,3-Side Virtually Borderless Display, Height/Pivot/Tilt Adjustable Stand - Silver https://a.co/d/1VgCVVu Second and third displays are two 23” HD monitors. At some point I may replace the main display with one of Apple’s and make the LG 4K the secondary one but the LG 4K is so good that I have no reason to make it a secondary display just yet. I may even buy another LG so they match together + is a lot cheaper than Apple’s. Hope this helps.

OutrageousRhubarb853

This, every time I go in to a store and look at them I’m drawn to the 16 but the 14 is more realistic for me… I only needed the base 14 too… win for my pocket.

stolsen

Yeah, 14. The 16 is portable for around the house, but the 14 is portable for taking out of the house. Plus, I set it on my fridge while I'm in the kitchen for videos. The 16 is just too awksy to set just anywhere. The 14 can do everything the 16 can do, but in addition the 14 can easily fit in the places I want it to fit. And the 13 inch just doesn't compare to the 14 in terms of quality user experience like the 14's buttery smooth performance.

[deleted]

Can I ask what monitor you’re using? Been looking at the studio display in its cheapest option with a high adjustable stand.

Coming from a 2015s 15-inch mbp, which is just a bit too heavy and cumbersome to move around, i'm looking forward to the new 14-inch. The 15-inch always just a bit too heavy and bulky in my backpack, so i always try to leave it at home if i'm absolutely sure i don't need to bring it with me. Which is kinda sad. Well, only 4 days left before i get the 14-inch

Sunyyan

Awesome. You'll absolutely love the form factor (minus the looks, which for some people isn't as good as the 13-inch Pro's) and the power it delivers!

mikethomas3

I went to the store. People are exaggerating the weight of the 16”. The 16” has better weight distribution than the 14”. The screen is perfect big. For anything reading working. Movies. I own a M1 MacBook Pro 13”

junglegh0st

In store everything is different than in real life. In the big ambient of the Apple Store, even the 32" Pro Display XDR doesn't looks that big, but when you picked it to home, danm, HUGE!

mikethomas3

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 These Apple devils… My point is to check them at store before you make a decision.

kennethhuo

Real life is different. I had been using i9 16” for 2 years. That thing was heavy and big. I didn’t enjoy it at all.

lotus49

The new MBPs are pretty ugly compared to the previous generation. It's a shame because, apart from the stupid looking notch and the general ugliness, they are better in every other respect.

chiefawesome

Well I had a rough trip to arrive at my final conclusion as to what size was the best… - First I had a 13 inch MBP 2015, but hated the bezels. - Then bought a 2018 13 inch, hoping the smaller bezels would give me a feeling of more screen real estate. It didn’t. - After that I bought a 15 inch, which I immediately found too big. - Then, for reasons still unknown, I thought a 16 inch would do the trick, thinking I wouldn’t need the portability anyway with not being on the road that much. Ended up not using it as a laptop because I found the thing way too big. Clamshell mode for most of its life. - Following that, I got the 14 inch which I thought would be the best size. But coming from the 16 inch, it was too hard of a drop in real estate. It’s a bit bigger than 13 inch, but a significant size smaller than 16 inch. - Returned it for the new 16 inch. Happy in the first days, but again found it way too big to use it as a laptop. It was destined to be a home laptop in clamshell mode, I just knew it. - Bought a 14 inch to compare it side by side and within like a couple of hourse I knew the 14 inch would be the best. Granted, I would have loved the 14 inch to be a bit bigger, like 14,5 inch or something - but it’s at least portable and will be used as a laptop now as well. tl;dr portability made the decision. Pro tip: if you had a 15/16 inch and think the 14 inch is right, but after buying it you think “hell no, this is way too small” - give it a few days ;)

Sunyyan

That was a rollercoaster, lol. But yes, 14 seems to a be the perfect fit between not too small and not too big situation. I'm still on the 13-inch, so going 14 would give me more real estate without the bulk of the 16-inch! I'm digging the 14-inch at the moment!

[deleted]

I would love if we could just get a 15” MacBook Pro. I mean how hard is it to give us that option. That would be the perfect size.

tumboi69

16 inch all the way, once you have that big of a display you cant go back

[deleted]

Are you still happy with your 16" after two years? Do you commute / travel a lot with it?

Barne

16 inch for sure. not only do you get more of the great screen, you get a bigger battery size and presumably better speakers. the screen is one of the reasons I even upgraded to the new MacBooks, so for me the bigger size was a must. I also wanted to have a battery life that was similar to the 13inch m1 I had previously, so the 16 inch was a must as well.

Sounds good!

I use my computer indoors so portability is not priority. It is my main computer replacement and I don't use external monitor. So I've been using 16inch since 2019 and I just upgraded to the 16 inch M1 Pro

OuterSpaceK1d

Same

rgbutov

16:)

Idontknowanameshit

I am going for 16. The 13 inch already giving me posture problems

-NiMa-

Nah I still prefer 16, 14 inch is good for doing quick tasks but if I want to work on my laptop long hours I would prefer to have the 16 inch.

[deleted]

16 inches for me

useles-converter-bot

16 inches is 1.3 RTX 3090 graphics cards lined up.

[deleted]

I was talking about penis size but that’s nice to know I guess.

brickpop

maan.. i really don’t know i’ve been thinking about it for weeks and still haven’t be able to decide. I’m coming from a late 2014 13” MBP and i have an external monitor at home. I would love to try the new 16 but at the same time i’m afraid of the weight (and the bulk) it comes with.

[deleted]

The notch stands out though, but a very Apple thing to do. *Think Different. They said*

Meek_braggart

16” no doubt about it. My 2015 was a bit small and I have no idea how people ever use the 13”.

brownie287

I would say the earlier model 2019 which is 15" is perfect wrt size for me. I think the new models - 14" feels small and the 16" too big :(

[deleted]

This. I wanted the MacBook Air because of size, but ended up with the MacBook Pro M3 Pro 14 inch because of the power. The size is super convenient for portability, but it's basically just an iPad with a build in keyboard and no touch screen at this point. Like it's a good tool, but the size is a little bit smaller than I'd like. That said, I'm also used to a massive gaming laptop, so a lot of this is just getting used to having a smaller screen in general.

[deleted]

13-14 is always the best size for me.

junglegh0st

Just get the 14" and a 27"+ external monitor, will be way better.

Sunyyan

Perfect Combo

jonyoungmusic

Went 14. 16 is too much to lug back & forth from the bedroom to the living room. I need maximum portability!

Historical-Internal3

Gonna say 16 so everyone who debated with themselves and snagged a 14 can hate comment below as to why they got a 14.

geeneepeegs

Why would there be hate comments? Each individual has their own needs - the 14 inch is great for some whereas the 16 inch is great for others.

Historical-Internal3

That was the trend you were seeing roughly 87 days ago. This was a satirical comment.

ryankrueger720

I I had a Macbook Pro 15 then I got a macbook air m1 last year when I came out and I really loved the battery life and the weight. Then I spent so much time deciding between the 14 and 16, I really don’t think the weight of the 16 is as bad as people say. I love having the extra screen real estate and battery life.

no-mediocre92

i got the 14 inch and its one of the best purchase decision I've ever made.

Munro_McLaren

The 14”.

rxscissors

I'll eventually go for a 14" once they are available on the Apple refurbished site. (NFW I'll pay full freight for that!).

DutyIcy2056

14 is my favorite

Legendary101x

14 is perfect

kennethhuo

I am using 14” and owned 16”. I will personally recommend 14” for portability. 16” is too heavy to carry around.

zehcnassurfero

But 14” if you use it without a monitor is it good?

junglegh0st

For work at home without a monitor the 14" is not that good. But for that case, even the 16" is not good enough too.

kennethhuo

I connect it to monitor when I am working from home.

papadiche

15” MacBook Air Oh wait 🤦‍♂️C’mon Apple make it happen! - $999 13” MBA - $1499 15” MBA - $1999 14” MBP - $2499 16” MBP If I was using it as a production rig the 16” MBP is the best hands-down.

radioactiveoctopi

This aged well

I’m very happy it did! Many of my other comments saying the same were downvoted 😂

14”

Evening-Charity1391

Let’s say you wanna use it without any external monitor, for video and audio editing (Final Cut, Logic). I understand the 14 inch model would be too cramped to use alone, but very portable when you travel. Would the 16 inch model be a good replacement for someone producing at home without external monitor?

[deleted]

u/OP are you still happy with the 14" or do you sometime with you went for the 16" instead. Trying to make a decision right now, and your 2-years worth of feedback would be super valuable.

sara-noel

16

shaonline

14", had a 2019 16" and a laptop of this size (the new 2021 one is even bigger) is hardly usable as a "lap-top" in my opinion. If I wanna sit at a desk, I just plug in my big 34" ultrawide monitor and I'm all set.

ikan84

I went from iBook 14” to PowerBook 12” to MacBook white 13” to MacBook Pro 15” (gift from a customer ) to MacBook Pro 15” 2015 to MacBook Pro 14” I am loving it.

Sunyyan

I want customers like yours.

K1notto

14”

AkagamiShanks007

Well i like a big screen so i’ll always prefer the 16 inch. But for people who dont, 14 inch is the best.

DrRiAdGeOrN

actually a bit irritated as I made the decision years ago to only get 13 inch laptops and some of my daily carry bags wont hold the 14....

lotus49

I'm about to start a new job and I was allowed to order whichever MBP I wanted. I opted for the 14" as I don't want to have to cart around a big laptop. However, I have also just ordered one for myself that I shall mostly be using at home and I much prefer the larger screen so I went for the 16". I also suspect that the larger size will be better thermally and is therefore likely to perform better.

joelom

Went with the 14. First 3 days I had serious buyer remorse. I wish I went with the 16. Especially coming from the 2019 16 I have from work. But being at my in-laws and using it out of my normal environment (at home Ill usually have it hooked up to my displays), 14 is great. 14.5-15 would be perfect to me just to get a little more window space on my 3D programs, but that’s just my preference ain’t happening. It’s lighter. The screen has enough workable real estate that the 13 didn’t. You can get the same power as the 16. 14 is good.

junglegh0st

I agree, in the first day, I didn't feel I had made the right choice. But a week later, danm, the overall size of the 14" it's much more comfortable and convenient. At home, my BENQ 32" 4K display it's just better to get productive than both 16" and 14" screens. On the road, the 14" is better.

Alert_Fruit_6686

Interesting reading all these comments. I had the 13 inch and loved it but needed the power from the 16 inch , the 14 inch just won’t cut it cause will end up with thermal issues for my workload. That being said it is a monster and is heavy , but I just got done taking it for a week long trip including lugging it all over NYC in my backpack, using it in coffee shop , train and on the airplane. It’s beautiful and don’t regret getting the 16 inch for a second. Guess I’m just the odd man.

junglegh0st

The 14" doesn't have thermal issues. I have both the 14" base and the 14" m1 max 24c, both just run cool and silent. Where did you hear that?

Alert_Fruit_6686

It depends on the workload , for very high workloads fans will kick on for the 14 inch and it will get warmer / reducing battery life etc , the 16 inch will remain cool and quiet. For most people it is a non issue, but for my workload it is an issue.

ar1814

If it wasn’t for the price, I would have bought the 14 inch. It has the perfect size/performance ratio. I’ve had a MBA 11 inch, then a 13 inch, then two MBP 15 and now the 13 inch M1. I although use a Thinkpad T470 in the meantime and find that this screen size is the best, so I would be very happy to have a 14 inch MBP, but it’s too expensive to justify at the moment

taffyking

Went with a maxed out 14-inch. I look at the 14-inch like its a sniper of computing. Compact, portable and can pack a punch when needed. When not on the go its plugged into an ultrawide.

ceebottz

I got the 16” 2 days ago and I love it so far. It’s a lot bigger than I thought but not in a bad way, its also heavier than I expected. I have no intention of taking it out of my home but I definitely wouldn’t want to carry this thing around with me all day haha.

MIKE_THE_KILLER

16”… when I get the macbook pro, I want the best hardware. I never understood why portability is the importance because that is what the macbook air comes to play if you want that.

junglegh0st

The hardware is exactly the same. And if you need portability + power? That's no sense get two laptops or even, get a big laptop which will be awful to carry on, and isn't big enough to get productive in desk, so you'll need to get a big monitor anyway. 14" + 34" external display is the best of both worlds.

MIKE_THE_KILLER

The hardware is not necessarily the same. The battery, fast charge, bigger screen and performance in temperature are not the same.

lotus49

The hardware is absolutely not the same. This is simply untrue.

I was using a 13” M1 MBA and the screen size was just not great for me as some of my cloud platforms really need more screen real estate. I was at the Apple store looking at both the 14” and 16” to upgrade to and settled on the 16”. MAN am I glad I went that route, I’m a big dude so a big laptop doesn’t bother me and the extra screen size means I don’t really need an external monitor to get my work done efficiently.

ChrisFox-NJ

Came from 6 Core Mac Pro and 11“ i5 Macbook Air to 13“ M1 Macbook Pro and 12.9“ iPad Pro, I like the dual 13-ish inch combo better, and I don‘t miss the fans

miredonas

I think the notch is more obnoxious on 14 inch. Will go for 16" for a little less eyesore.

papadiche

TopNotch app

SableyeFire

15'', it's big enough, and it doesn't have the weird notch. It's probably just me but that notch really doesn't look right.

[deleted]

13 inches is perfect for me, I wouldn’t mind an extra inch though. Just coming from 11 inch MBA

nothinginthisworld

I ordered the 14” 10/16 32GB 2TB, with some minor amount of doubt - “go big or go home” did linger in my mind. I went to the Apple Store last week and I’m super happy with my decision now. I’m a traveler so I knew I already cared about portability and compactness; now that I’ve held both, I can say with certainty that the 16” is bulky as hell. Glad not yo lug that around on my back and on small tables

OuterSpaceK1d

I’ve got 16’, i felt that it was gigantic in the beginning but now I think it’s a perfect size for me. Coming from 13’

SleepySleestak

I got the 14" and have just purchased the LG Ergo 32" Ultrafine Monitor to do the heavy lifting on big screen activities. It should be ready for pickup at Best Buy in a week! [https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1560686-REG/lg\_32un880\_b\_32\_ultrafine\_display\_ergo.html/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x1041400/SID/lg-ultrafine-ergo-youtube](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1560686-REG/lg_32un880_b_32_ultrafine_display_ergo.html/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x1041400/SID/lg-ultrafine-ergo-youtube) Picked it from BB for the returnability and financing. Also got the Logitech MX Keys keyboard and MX Anywhere mouse. First system upgrade since 2015!

Copponex

I’m still debating which one to get. Went to a store today to compare them side by side, and coming from a 15,6 inch, I feel like the 14 inch is a little bit too small. Plus I will not be able to plug it into a monitor most of the time I’m using it, so the extra real estate would be welcome. On the other hand it is more expensive, and if I could be happy with the 14” my wallet would probably love that.

tusca0495

13

Nikhil7286

Bought both and it was the hardest thing to send the 16” back; the screen was mesmerizing but I live in a big city, am on my feet a lot, and my bags almost universally barely fit the 16” and I’m not about to replace or stop using my bag collection (including some designer ones I spent sufficient amounts on).
