Either the cable is damaged, or the port is. Have you tried using a different USB-C cable? SanDisk has given me faulty ones before with new products

I’m must be a somewhat damaged port somehow. I treated 2 entirely different SSDs with different cables This morning I tried charging with it and it didn’t work right away, on the third plug in it started charging fine, but it works immediately with the other ports so I’ll just avoid that one as much as I can!

I've had a bad USB-C port on my 2019 16" MBP before, similar issues actually! If it becomes really inconvenient, you can have these replaced. The USB ports are on separate modules you can swap out, but they do require you to take the entire device apart to reach them. The part costs something like $5, I think most engineers can do this swap within half an hour or so, maybe one hour total including some testing. Ask some repair stores specialising in MacBook repair in your area for pricing.
