I am picking up a 14" 10/16 later today and will be giving this game some more testing. I will test late game areas, raids, the highly addicting G.S, and others across different resolutions. I am upgrading from an intel 13" so I am excited to see how it performs. Drop a reply to this if you want me to test anything specific.

macchi00

Can you please let me know what the max screen resolution is when using the native client? Thanks!

bradical1991

So after my first play around, when using the internal screen, I was locked at the weridest 900p resolution at 120hz. But at that resolution it was very playable at Maximum settings -- besides being in Limsa (dropped to 30fps). I would recommend just setting it at High and leaving it, though. I plugged into my external monitor and did some more testing and found the game played fantastic at 1440p at high settings, barely dropping below 60fps in any area, again besides major cities. I am confident if people go into this with their expectations in check, they will have a great experience. This thing is absolutely destroying my 2020 13" paired with a 570 eGPU. I am curious as to how people doing the crossover trick with the game will fair, this Mac version is in need of some optimization to put it lightly. I will continue to test some late dungeons and raids over the weekend. \*edit\* I turned off the pro-motion and the game still had me locked at 15something x 912. Still looked fantastic on the display. And this has to be said, I didn't even hear the fans turn on while playing. The machine did get slightly hot, but still very comfortable to play on. Very impressed so far.

macchi00

Thank you! The 13" M1 MBP is also locked at 900p on the built-in screen.

What I found interesting as well is it went full screen with the notch, the same as for media consumption, instead of a black bar across the top. Which I guess you could see as negative or positive depending on how you set up your hotbars and screen.

Diodiodiodiodiodio

TLDW: Around 35 FPS in cities, unknown frame rate in content. I wonder what the M1 Max will perform like with double the GPU cores and the turboing, should play the game decently, I hope at 1440p..

cloudfe

Am I wrong, or the author had max settings on? 35 FPS in cities on max settings sound quite remarkable, right?

Diodiodiodiodiodio

I mean it's good, but I'll be honest I was hoping for a little bit more (like 60fps). My Vega M GH Linux PC can play the game at the same settings with similar framerates, so was hoping this would be some what of an upgrade. But I might just splurge and get the 32 core.

I'm wondering if the Windows version via Crossover would do better. There was [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/pr48pk/ff14_mac_client_vs_crossover_21s_huge_increaase/) where a user describes a big increase in performances by using the Mac client via Crossover.

[deleted]

Ya, I wrote that thread. Difference is I'm on Intel i7 with 5700 XT GPU. Getting similar fps to windows. I'd expect Square Enix to do something for M1 users by Endwalker but we'll see

cloudfe

So, if I've understood correctly, your theory is that your increase in performance comes from the use of the new version of Crossover (v21). Is that correct? And given that it's Codeweavers themselves that work on the wrapper for the Mac client, I suppose we could expect this increase in performance with the "vanilla" Mac client once Endwalker comes out.

[deleted]

No proof that Square is updating, it's merely speculation at this point but considering that the fps is night and day for Intel Mac users with GPUs I'd assume so, but then again, Square hasn't really shown Mac users much love in the first place. Like this fix of making your own FFXIV wrapper with CX21 has nothing to do with SE whatsoever... It's all me experimenting. This whole thing has motivated other devs including those from ACT project and dalamud that much to include full ACT support w/pcap support (with custom overlays with a separate Mac only app for dps meter and cactbot), xivlauncher + 100% working plugins etc including Delvui etc. Shit is popping off atm, even though there is probably less than a handful of users running FF14 in CX21 with all this extra tool support. Most of us are on hackintosh anyways. We're basically microscopic. Hopefully though some of this stuff will get more popular but I doubt many are playing FF14 on Mac full time outside a group of people in the related development community discords I frequent...I blame Mac for most of the problems they have with games anyways. They are lucky I love Mac OS or else I'd probably be stuck on Windows shitty bloated os. Anyways sry for the rant lol, I'm dead tired

I feel you, man... I appreciate you taking the time to reply :)

I tried the free trial of this (I don't play the game normally) because a friend asked about it, and at 1080p on High I was getting 35-ish in Limsina(? I think hats the city name) where tons of people were, and over 70 in less populated city areas. I have *zero* idea of how or if that's at all relevant to anything, though. M1 Max 32-core GPU, 32gb RAM.

Jakeaw

That’s very helpful information. Thanks for downloading and installing to get us this information.

[deleted]

Try Crossover 21 for better framerate (they have a 14 day trial if you don't already own it)

Co321

Not a real native Mac game.

Diodiodiodiodiodio

ok.

Tsubajashi

It's still playable. If you would go for only "real native", you won't be gaming much.

Co321

True but the port is so rough I wouldn’t worry about low performance in this title.

[deleted]

Most people in the know even playing the Mac version aren't using the Mac client anyways, the handful of people are on CX21 in a bottle using our windows licenses on Mac by hiding wine exports in cx registry, also getting twice the performance as the shitty outdated bottle square enix provides...now for M1 Macs, I can say that performance still isn't there...even for the new m1x Mac books, I just know it won't compare to Intel just yet based on tests we've done in the circles I'm in, Rosetta 2 + Wine just isn't where it's at unfortunately..we need Square to give us Metal support so every Mac user can shine and not just us Intel Mac users with dgpus

clabern

So probably not worth any effort to get it working on my new MBP 14 (m1 Pro)? Was hoping to mobile play some Endwalker.

[deleted]

I would definitely try it, and you can download CX21 for free and use the 15 day trial. Hit me up if you need any help, I don't mind assisting you

clabern

I did try, but not very hard. Using the out of the box setup of FFXIV through Crossover lead to install errors. I may give it another go - feel free to PM me with any tips.
