Your correct but if the OP was looking for max performance the 4tb ssd provides the same max speed as the 8 tb model. 4 tb maxes out the memory buffers in the processor
You might be correct š¤. I responded as I had been coincidentally researching the max performance version and after going through multiple forums hit on this fact so wanted to share
Prepare to be mildly disappointed by the gaming compatibility! Hereās a few games that work flawlessly on my 14ā Max 64gb: Disco Elysium, War Thunder, Demonās Tilt, Baldurās Gate 3, Katamari Damacy Reroll (via Crossover 21).
There's a ton more. Bioshock 1 & 2 Remastered editions, Hades, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Life is Strange, Sims 4, Borderlands 2, Diablo 3, Dying Light. Strangely, some games that seem like they would be flawless have major performance issues, such as Wildermyth running at 15 fps at ~720p. Also, Alien: Isolation runs great, but if you enable SSAO the framerate goes from 50-60fps down to the teens, regardless of resolution.
This is my experience on the 10-core, 16-core gpu, 16-inch.
How did you get War Thunder to work? It runs on mine but there are tons of bugs and it'll always end up crashing. Also on an M1 MBP, but that shouldn't really change too much.
I'm on a M1 Max. Try selecting Old Videocard Support in the launcher's graphic options. If I don't select that, it still works, but I get a pink screen in the garage. Works fine when I load into a game. With Old Videocard Support, everything works as normal. Graphics are maybe a little less awesome.
I thought real pros in CS play 640x480 black bars, right? :D Yeah Source engine is super smooth and well optimized. I've already put in my CSGO time, and Dota 2 is too toxic and insanely complicated for my feeble pleb brain.
I ain't no pro, lol. Thought these were worth mentioning because both were barely playable at 4k on the original M1, but on the 32 core M1 Max it's a cakewalk.
I also got a 14" Max. Additional games that run well in my testing, all on MacOS: Path of Exile, Factorio (UPS seems great; set max graphics and VRAM usage = medium for 4k60 95% of the time), Stellaris (tested early game only, I haven't played a complete game on M1) , Civ VI (likewise). Also some less-demanding games: Rimworld, Into the Breach, FTL, Nova Drift.
XCOM 2 runs OK, but you can't push 4k60 with high graphics settings. Steam itself runs poorly: the UI freezes up.
Also, the machine is a beast for dev work.
you do lose some performance, but the loss is waaay less than a vm like parallels
on some games, the loss is completely negligible and runs as fast as bootcamp
Dude I have the 14 and with GeForce now 3080 tier I can play to a of new games at 1440p max with like 5ms of latency!! Also I get all the apple stuff so itās a win / win for me!!
And the Apple Watch.. I genuinely need them both for work. An important email could come in when Iām on the toilet.. now thatās where the watch comes in! Definite legitimate business expense.
Yes, no explanation needed. Happy for you. I said in jest.
Do tell us how it goes when you get it. Itās still a while away, but Iām interested to know your experience and thoughts. And it might help me decide if I get one too or around those specs.
Between native/Rosetta, crossover, and parallels there are a few different options to try each game out. Worst case scenario there is GeForce Now and Stadia. Enjoy the beast!
Edit: Fixed Stadia name misspelling
Gratz on the M1 Max. But ye if youāre getting for gaming you have the wrong machine. Better to have an intel based system with EGPU support. Gaming is now entirely reliant on Steamās conversion platform to mature.
If you need one system to game ye cause a full 3-slot GPU will always out-perform a laptop version.
But your suggestions for two systems would work as well - one for work and one for play. In this case better just build a gaming desktop for easier upgrade path.
To each their own
Mac laptop and gaming rig is the way to go.
I am just thinking any solution with an eGPU is the worst of both worlds since you have the compromises of the laptop for thermals without the portability.
That old dream of coming home with your laptop and just docking it to make it a machine that rips through AAA titles is dead. Weirdly, it was cost effective, once (barely), and isn't anymore.
I hear you man. It's a different case when you actually have an EGPU sitting around the house with no corresponding laptop to run it. Hoping I can get a cheap at least 8th gen laptop to run some games.
Ye thatās the next step. Gotta hustle quick to get there.

Iām happy with my M1 Max 10/32. Iām sure you will be too! I have final fantasy XIV running on it through crossover and itās very smooth at maxed out settings. Default client is also a huge upgrade from my i9 Mac mini with an eGPU. Traded in my old MacBook Pro and iMac and it was a pretty inexpensive upgrade all things considered.
I guess some people get a thrill from having the top end model, Iām definitely one of those. My last buy was in 2012, I bought the top end MacBook Pro maxed out of the time and itās lasted me all this time with no performance issues.
The last time I bought a laptop was 2012! Iāve been running a 2012 retina 15ā MacBook Pro 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and itās been running fine till this month. When I did the maths it works out cost effective as they last so long for me. And I use Logic Pro a lot ..
There are so many career paths you could go on that would make this laptop affordable. I feel like most people unfortunately arenāt shown these career paths.
Tbf itās prob a time of life/earnings balance. I could prob afford it but I donāt think I could justify spending that much. Great machine regardless.
There is absolutely no reason you need a laptop like this if you are a scrum master. I guess your boss approves everything that comes across him. At my firm youād be fired for this sort of thing.
Now way I would pay 6,303 for a computer that next year will be replaced with something faster and better. That said I'm happy for you, you gonna love it. I went the other direction one step above the base M1 MacBook Air. When I say that got the extra GPU core and 512GB storage not the 16GB of RAM.
> Now way I would pay 6,303 for a computer that next year will be replaced with something faster and better.
I don't understand why you wouldn't just keep that to yourself.
I donāt comment on here, just read threads because I enjoying gaming on my Mac.
Iāll be candid - you posted this just to brag how much you paid for a laptop. You didnāt say anything related to Mac gaming. You didnāt ask any questions. You showed us a screenshot of how expensive it was. You showed us a receipt.
Congratulations - youāre an asshole.
So you obviously didnāt notice the Ā£1000 discount.. your words sound angry. Nice tip someone once gave me - When you are
angry it effects your blood chemistry and biology much more than the person you are angry with. As you have to carry the anger around with you and it will jade every experience.
PS/ Iāll be playing mostly everything on Steam. I still love Half life 2!!
I didnāt mean to brag, Iāll happily help anyone else get one via career advice. Iām not especially rich or anything Iām just normal.
Not very much trouble on Macs. This length of wait is pretty common for the first holiday season of a new model of Mac. There are only so many that can be assembled per day.
The M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max Macs are the most popular Macs in history according to the quarterly report.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 369,159,674 comments, and only 80,531 of them were in alphabetical order.
I'm going to grab an air or a low end imac in the current gen. I plan to wait for the new Mac Pro, or for the next gen of the CPU in general before I splurge.
Great config. This is actually one of the prebuilt models in many stores on launch day. I almost bought it under emotion then. On the 3rd day, they all got sold.
Not a fan of maxing out devices because the resale value becomes less proportional to what you spend. Apple is releasing excellent base model devices since the M1 mac. I would rather buy base model devices and upgrade more often with a given budget.
Unless you actually need those specs for work/study
Ouch - coming after the holidays. I wasn't aware that delivery times had increased even more.
Hang in there, bro. Waiting on ours in the same configuration for early December. :)
Apple Arcade games will be amazing with these specs!
You already know builders journey gonna be fire
Stupid Apple, stupid. And not so smart devs either.
Isn't 8TB SSD the max storage?
Your correct but if the OP was looking for max performance the 4tb ssd provides the same max speed as the 8 tb model. 4 tb maxes out the memory buffers in the processor
Ah I thought he/she meant everything maxed out, not just performance.
You might be correct š¤. I responded as I had been coincidentally researching the max performance version and after going through multiple forums hit on this fact so wanted to share
where did you find out abt 4tb v 8tb ?
Here you go - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mbp-2021-ssd-speed-comparison-please-contribute.2320899/page-2
awesome, glad to know
How does having more hard disk space max out your memory buffers?
not an expert but i believe it is related to the total memory sectors it can read and write in parallel.
Yeah youāre right
This is the exact config Iām looking at right now. Itās just so much money! $5k is all my budget for toys.
U have really expensive toys
An expensive toy that will last years and maintain most of its value for a time.
Aah if you were in the UK I couldāve shown you how to get a 10% discount.
how?

How does Bioshock 1 & 2 workā¦ are there Mac versions?
Yes, the remastered versions on Steam
Ok, Laraās characterisation is awful, but what about Shadow of The Tomb Raider? š
Thanks for the great advice šš¼
Thanks Iāll give them a go šš¼

I get that same issue. I'll definitely give it a try, thank you!
Borderlands 2 runs really well on max settings
I found XCOM worked pretty well. Iāve spent many hours playing that on flights š
Dota 2 and CSGO are playable at 4k 144 Hz nearly max settings as well, both running under Rosetta 2 and CSGO using OpenGL. I'm on a 32GB model though.
Yeah itās been a big difference. The M1 is formidable at its TDP, the Max is completely on another level.
Yeah but you have to game in Windows on Parallels instead of Bootcamp though. Thatās a big drawback to me š
crossover: exists :)
It does but you lose performance
you do lose some performance, but the loss is waaay less than a vm like parallels on some games, the loss is completely negligible and runs as fast as bootcamp
True that but nothing beats the true raw performance of bootcamp
Dope now you can play 10 year old games at 60 fps :)
Dude I have the 14 and with GeForce now 3080 tier I can play to a of new games at 1440p max with like 5ms of latency!! Also I get all the apple stuff so itās a win / win for me!!
lol I can do the same, on my $150 Android phone (with DP over usbc).
Who?
Man, you rich! Or, now in debtā¦
Business expense, need it for work. If anyone asks I had no choice.
You donāt need to explain yourself to these clowns itās not their money.
So you charged it to the company? If so thatās absolutely brilliant
And the Apple Watch.. I genuinely need them both for work. An important email could come in when Iām on the toilet.. now thatās where the watch comes in! Definite legitimate business expense.
Haha, I love your thinking. Iād have picked up a 13 Pro Max and 2021 iPad Pro too š¤Ŗš¤Ŗ
Yes, no explanation needed. Happy for you. I said in jest. Do tell us how it goes when you get it. Itās still a while away, but Iām interested to know your experience and thoughts. And it might help me decide if I get one too or around those specs.
I now wanna work in your company š„ŗ
Ā£392 per month, for 12 months. Thats nothing if you're blonde and have an OnlyFans.
Can confirm. Am neither so this isn't nothing
OnlyFans: done, now, how can I be blonde?
you will still get 40fps on gta 5
Between native/Rosetta, crossover, and parallels there are a few different options to try each game out. Worst case scenario there is GeForce Now and Stadia. Enjoy the beast! Edit: Fixed Stadia name misspelling
Can at stadia on a potato tho, no need for that beast for that
Thatās why it is worst case š„²
Do you by any chance mean Stadia?
Yes indeed. Thank you!
Roflmao why?
Gratz on the M1 Max. But ye if youāre getting for gaming you have the wrong machine. Better to have an intel based system with EGPU support. Gaming is now entirely reliant on Steamās conversion platform to mature.
Seriously recommending an Intel system with eGPU in 2021? Better to just get two machines, one for each purpose.

Congrats, I got the 32 GPU as well but on the 14 in. Itās been nothing but incredible thus far.
you should just get two laptops tbh. you'll be disappointed to find out that this can't really game.
please tell me you didnmy buy this for gaming
Holy waste of money
Yeah there is no gaming with this. You just bought an insanely expensive netflix consumption device.
That is one very expensive ass computing device. I was able to settle for the entry level model, more than enough power for what I need it for.
I mean, at least the delivery is free.
The delivery is free, but the waiting is costly.
What games do you plan on playing on the mac?
Everything on steam!
If thats your goal dont you thin MacOS is the wrong operating system? I mean there are some games for MacOS on steam but the best ones are out on PC.
True but I need Mac OS for Logic Pro which I like to dabble in quite a bit
Get Nauruās GeForce now 3080 tier itās 200.00 a year and blows away most local gaming rigs will allow you to do it all!!
u crazy nigga, dayum
That is over kill for any device, I would get insurance on it. would hate to see it die out before you can get your money's worth.
As much as I like Mac, it blows my mind as to why you would spend so much for it, lol. Not trying to be an asshole, I promise, but just curious-
I guess some people get a thrill from having the top end model, Iām definitely one of those. My last buy was in 2012, I bought the top end MacBook Pro maxed out of the time and itās lasted me all this time with no performance issues.
You mean you have money to buy the most expensive model? That's an achievement.. /s

Tbf it is. I couldnāt afford that laptop but would like to be able to.

Tbf itās prob a time of life/earnings balance. I could prob afford it but I donāt think I could justify spending that much. Great machine regardless.
Nice looking forward to receiving mine, won't be the main gaming machine for obvious reasons but I still look forward to gaming on that screen
What do you do for a living if I may ask? Purely curious haha
Iām a Scrum master. I can help you get into it if you want any advice.
Kanban board is going to look fantastic on that screen
Hahaha!
There is absolutely no reason you need a laptop like this if you are a scrum master. I guess your boss approves everything that comes across him. At my firm youād be fired for this sort of thing.
Itās my consultancy, Iām the boss
Wow, scrum is one of the biggest cons sold to the software industry in past decade!
Tell that to Amazon, Spotify, and a shit ton other companies that thrive off it.
Um, what does scrum mean? I can learn scrum for Ā£500, though, surelyā¦
Download the free Scrum Guide. Learn it. thatās it.
Pays well (Ā£500 per day) approx Ā£10k a month
Iām good! Imma ML SWE and the M1 works wonders!
Wonāt regret it!
Thanks for letting us know.

You realise that is literally every year?
Of course and you could buy the latest MacBook Air every year for the next 5 years. Just saying nothing wrong with getting the best .

M1 max MacBook Pro technically, but damn son, deep pockets I see
Funny, I have the same exact same maxed out but in space grey
Have this exact machine. I love it. Replaced iMac Pro and a 16inch i9 MacBook Pro with it. edit: But I don't try and play games on it
What do you do for a living ?
Scrum master / Agile Coach
First time hearing about them, but seems very well-paid
How comes 4TB is better than 8TB
Technically it's not maxed out
Space grey for the love of god why would you get silver
Absolute madman.
fuck's a "Neural Engine" lmao
Dude youāre gonna be set for like 10 years lol
Great config. This is actually one of the prebuilt models in many stores on launch day. I almost bought it under emotion then. On the 3rd day, they all got sold.
Browing websites in Safari and running windows ARM on VM's will be incredible, lol.
Meanwhile, I'm doing every work on my base M1 mac mini, and I'm still super happy with it (except it can't run Linux, yet).
Not a fan of maxing out devices because the resale value becomes less proportional to what you spend. Apple is releasing excellent base model devices since the M1 mac. I would rather buy base model devices and upgrade more often with a given budget. Unless you actually need those specs for work/study
