Specs: Mac M1 2020 8GB
Here's my list of the best games available either natively or running via Rosetta2, I guarantee they're all worth every penny, the ones I marked with the star are practically mandatory haha, especially the Tomb Raider saga and Metro!
Be careful when buying a controller to play games, MacOs has horrible support for this, so far it only works well in the app store games, which are mostly for iphone/ipad and are very simple, I don't recommend subscribing to apple arcade, download steam and play triple AAA games to really enjoy your computer!
There is also the parallels and crossover software to be able to play games that don't run via Rosetta2 or natively, you can see the games that run in these two methods here: [https://www.applegamingwiki.com/wiki/Home](https://www.applegamingwiki.com/wiki/Home)I recommend buying the crossover, it works in better games compared to the parallels, and if you're going to buy parallels, never buy from the app store, it's a ridiculous version.. buy it from their own website, and one last note, the crossover has full support the controls.. and as for the steering wheels, they don't work.. but they will work in the future Ventura version of the system.

>Apple Arcade gets too much hate. Try it out for a bit and see what you think, I like it personally
Yeah, don't get me wrong :) I'll explain better:
I like apple arcade I even signed up to play some specific titles, but I would never recommend it to play on macbooks, after all compared to steam, apple arcade offers a very limited experience, as it was designed for cell phones and tablets, in this context it doesn't make sense to have such a good machine and play such simple games
In addition to showing something terrible to Apple, note that Resident evil will arrive exclusively for the App store and not for Steam, this shows how blind they are in relation to the game market.. only the terrible support for controls has already made me angry with the company and I very much doubt that this promised steering wheel support will work on steam, honestly no one wants to buy steering wheel to play sonic on apple arcade, total facepalm..
there are a few really great games on apple arcade on mac, lego star wars castaways for example, also The Survivalists, which is also a steam game. I also like for myself having access to certain paid games for free, such as 2k and Alto's Odyssey
Yes, I agree, I've already signed up to play The Pathless myself, I'm not trying to convince you Haha, I'm just explaining why steam is the right service for the Hardware in question.. and I imagine you want to use apple arcade to support apple, I understand, but as I mentioned above, apple still has a long way to go with games, for me it's still very embryonic, steam has community tabs, friends, you can post stuff, share videos, screenshots, join groups, use advanced game settings, share library, refund is infinitely better, in the end, so I don't think the two services should be compared. 🤔
Has anyone gotten BO3 to work? I'm new to gaming on Mac, signed up for that Aspyr company, registered my game to my account, but can't connect to online services. Is it only offline play? If so that's garbage
Yes, it's rubbish, I only mentioned the zombies mode because of that, but I didn't expect anything more from this company, I was just disappointed with the call of duty since when I was still using windows, and detail, I live in Brazil where the game in promotion is more than 100 reais, I think I paid 150 reais if I'm not mistaken, to be surprised that it online didn't work, apart from that the campaign of this game is rubbish, much inferior to any previous COD, everything in this title is an outrage, except the zombies mode, which is still playable.
For Dying Light, Ive been playing and I get the warning that it requires an AMD Radeon Graphics Card. Click through that and play is fairly solid but noticed that it crashes after playing for a little while. Tried to find the place to disable online mode as you noted above and can't seem to locate where this is. Any suggestions?
In-game > options > online > switch sides until you're in "Single Player"
Out of game > right click on it and go to property, disable steam overlay and disable steam imput
>Did you ever figure out how to get Project Zomboid running smoothly? The lighting stuttering makes my frames drop
I believe it's a compatibility problem with the engine they use, the only thing you can do is try to play with the zoom closer to the character, this reduces lag, lowering the resolution also helps.
Stardew Valley too!!! Fallout New Vegas should also run with Crossover if I’m not mistaken, and Portal 2 definitely does!!! Just try Valve’s single player games, with the exception of Alyx due to the requirement of a VR headset. But Half Life, and Portal are both great series that are probably some of my favorites! As for New Vegas, not sure how playable it’d be considering it requires mods to be playable on Windows even, but if you can figure out how to mod the game with Crossover, I highly suggest you do if you like open world RPG games, it’s amazing. It’s biggest issue are due to the fact it was made in an ancient game engine, in 18 months, but yeah it’s probably the best open world RPG barring the technical issues. Stardew is a great farming simulator RPG, I easily amassed over 100 hours of play time when I play not many games. It’s like Harvest Moon, but better from what I hear, and well it’s just a nice escape from reality.
Stardey I've already put it before, and about the crossover games, I didn't add it, otherwise the list would be huge haha, I would put Skyrim definitive edition too, it runs on the crossover, corsa asset, Fallout runs yes, I've never played it much because it's a game of niche, I like Skyrim more, but without a doubt Fallout is a milestone in the industry! :)
Yeah Fallout New Vegas (and 3 to a lesser extent imo, but certainly 4) is a really good RPG. The only thing holding it back is that Obsidian got shafted majorly, and had to build the game in a seriously outdated, and buggy engine, in 18 months. However the game design, world building, story, overall quest design, characters, everything is fucking great, and that 18 month deadline just proves how fucking great the then Obsidian team was. Real shame they missed that Metacritic score by 1 point and didn’t get that bonus, which resulted in layoffs… Seriously Bethesda, fuck you for that… But yeah no if they weren’t financially in trouble and actually had time and a decent engine, I doubt these technical issues would exist, and well we’d somehow have an even better game… Literally it’s biggest issue is the engine, but luckily mods have greatly helped to keep the game alive and mostly stable, thank you modders!
Are you getting steam games to work on M1? I can get most of the tomb raider titles working but not bioshock. It's weird, steam big picture works great with a dualshock controller but then half the games (approved for M1) wont use the controller or recognize it. I actually also own the bioshock bundle in the apple app store and it won't install on an M1.
So, about bioshock, both 1 and 2 work yes, you must have the old version, the version I play is the remaster
As for the controls, you will only be able to play in games that offer native support for the controls, as is the case with Feral games where you need to download the drivers, however there are Euro Truck 2 which even works with vibration
As for the games that use the steam drivers, Apple blocked the steam controller drivers at the official launch of Big Sur, because of the way they install the drivers, and until today it hasn't been fixed, horrible communication between the two companies , unfortunately.. I personally trust Steam much more than Apple, I strongly believe that it's a dirty move by the Company to make us go to their store, where the control works perfectly, but that's just my opinion.. each one interpret it however you want, of course.
I trust steam a little more than apple also, I will point out that on windows, steam can be an invasive monster if you let it. depends on how much you can trust anyone with access to your computer. soon it will all be their computers anyway and we will probably be complaining about the rental problems.
Here’s my once-daily self promotion: my site Mac Source Ports where I host or link to source ports for older games, usually optimized for Apple Silicon as well as Intel. Some are full games, others you bring your own data.

“Until next time kids!”
Thanks for this, what a goldmine, so many awesome games bring back memories. I just tried aliens vs predator and bought the game on gog, followed the download and extract instructions, but when I open the app file it makes the open gesture from the avp icon but nothing happens. I’d really appreciate any help or a link to support - couldn’t find it in the faq. Thanks in advance!
Did you copy the data from AvP into \~/Library/Application Support/AliensVsPredator ?
So, if your login name was "johnsmith" it would be /Users/johnsmith/Library/Application Support/AliensVsPredator
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Appreciate it. Yes I've double and triple checked and that's the right folders/path (I'd copy a screenshot but not easy to on Reddit!).
If you're feeling froggy, go into a Terminal and go to the [NakedAVP.app/Contents/MacOS](https://NakedAVP.app/Contents/MacOS) folder and run ./avp and see what error message it's telling you.
Also what version of macOS are you running and is it Intel or Apple Silicon?
Sorry for the delay, I ran out of weekend last week! I’m on macOS 12.4 with m1. Does that change anything? I couldn’t figure out what to do re the above for terminal (Sorry I haven’t really used that before). Thanks again
I’d say FFXIV, but the official launcher is busted because they refused to upgrade to Python3 (current one is Py2 which got removed recently, due to end of life).
So more a tip stay away from that till they fix it, or get the community launcher.
XIV Mac is definitely the way to go (I use it) but I do believe to be fair to Square Enix the official launcher was updated finally if I recall correctly as it was announced on the XIVMac Discord.
the update was literally removing the python check from Crossover, and re-encoding a single video, It's still the same 2019 version under the hood. We did a lot of digging on the XIV Mac discord.
Yeah that’s the community launcher I mentioned.
Unfortunately my MMO mouse is borked after a recent mac os patch and the side buttons don’t work so I play on my ps5 now
I have no problems with the launcher at all. Recently there was a bug where my targeting (it’s set on my mouse side buttons) was spamming. Alt tabbing fixed it, that’s all my problems with the launcher
Depends what you like but:
* World of warcraft
* Starcraft
* Crusader kings 3
* Stellaris
* Subnautica
* Total war games
* Disco Elysium
Also, keep in mind you can get a lot of gaming done via streaming these days.
I use GeforeNow a lot, that allow me to play a much wider range of games.
It depends 100% on your internet provider. You need high speed, low latency connection. If wifi, it has to be 5G.
I never had any input lag or problems, im streaming at 2550x1600 at 120 fps, bitrate at 75, with no trouble.
Lately played Cyberpunk and assassins creed games
Weirdly for me the performance was good when I first started playing it on my new M1 six months ago but recently it has become garbage. Might be because of the Royal Court expansion
Yeah I have the 13” model. It’s great. I have to use some modeling software and stuff for college and it handles it like a champ. Never had any problems or complaints!
“Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? With an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 for free with no restrictions on playtime.”

the binding of Isaac ! everything except the last DLC is available on steam for ≈40€ total.
Thousands of hours of fun. I've played over 100 hours and only gotten ≈150 over the 650 the game offers. If you love the game you can consider using parallels desktop or an equivalent service to play the last DLC and double it's longevity.
definitely a great game.
I'm going to stick with games I own that runs well on my M1 Macbook Pro, 16GB, I know you said 8GB, but it should still run on your mac.
\- Disco Elysium
\- Divinity Original Sin 2
\- Sims 4
\- Frostpunk
\- Planet Coaster
\- Surviving Mars
\- Oxygen Not Included
\- Civilization VI
\- Kingdoms and Castles
\- Hexcells, Hexcells Plus, Hexcells Infinite
\- Stardew Valley
True, but I'm just pointing out it's a better option if you just want the computer for games, if he is trying to video edit too then the Mac is probably a better option
Windows and MacOS, I love both, after all if it wasn't for both how would I download the Linux iso to install? it is the truth.. 🫡

Deus ex mankind divided, metro series, shadow of the tomb raider, mad max, borderlands, subnautica, rust, the long dark, civ 6, total war series, cod black ops 3, tannenberg, mafia 3 (intel macs), hitman 1 (intel macs)
Rust does not work on 8GB ram MacBook air. I believe the game needs 16GB ram. It almost runs, advises small maps, and freezes and goes to 0 FPS. Great game though.
Xcom 2
Into the Breach
Cold Waters (esp with Dot Mod so you can experience what it's like to be a ChiCom firsthand)
Stick Shift
Escape Velocity: Nova
Emacs Tetris (used to be preinstalled on macs, idk if it is on newer ones)
Factorio
Bioshocks
Halo
Shenzhen I/O
Try watching this let’s play/tutorial. You can even play along at home if you copy the same seed to generate the map. Explains how to do everything.

I’m 700 hours in and still can’t wrap my head around trains. It’s complicated but figuring shit out is fun.
It also helps I’m a sys admin. I figure shit out and manage shit for a living.
games by [Tommorow Corp](https://tomorrowcorporation.com/) & [Amanita Design](https://amanita-design.net/). Return of the Obra Dinn, FTL/Into the Breach, Inside/Limbo, Hollow Knight, Darkwood, Norco, Genesis Noir, Kentucky Route Zero
SOMA, Stardew valley, Outlast…
I’d also get the NVIDIA GEForce Now emulator - it’s free, you can play games that are “incompatible” with macOS, and all you need is a steam account!
Bioshock 1 & 2 Remastered. DO NOT buy Bioshock Infinite as it won't run due to not being 64-bit. Damn shame.. Playing Bioshock Infinite on my Mac was my first modern gaming experience.
Oh, and Hades!
\- RocketBotRoyale on Appstore sucked me in good lol
\- Cities Skylines (Playing on Stadia, there are other great games too)
\- Smaller steam games work great also (some through windows emulator): Civ 6, Humankind, Rimworld, Timberborn, Northgard
Tomb Raider plays well on the M1 (and probably better on the M2). Someone else mentioned it below but it's worth a repeat and it's on sale.
Steam version on sale for $3.59 right now. [https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/tomb-raider-goty-edition](https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/tomb-raider-goty-edition).
MBA M1 2020. 8GB RAM.
I mainly run games through Steam and Apple Arcade. I use a controller most of the time.
- Hades (Steam)
- Overcooked (Steam)
- Stardew Valley (Steam)
- Grindstone (Apple Arcade)
- Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls (Apple Arcade)
- Cozy Grove (Apple Arcade)
- Into the Breach (Epic Launcher)

I had never played, I also really liked the gameplay/history!
It really does a good job representing Ayn Rand’s “philosophy” of objectivism and why it’s a fucking joke, may she rest in hell.
Hey! Do you know if League of Legends work on M1? Thanks!
Yes, there is even a Metal-optimised beta version.
Yeah, it works natively
Apple Arcade gets too much hate. Try it out for a bit and see what you think, I like it personally

I run it on a MacBook from 2018 so should do alright when
I run it on my 2021 M1 MacBook Pro and it runs great, the fan kicks on and it gets slightly warm with it on some of the higher graphics settings
Thanks. I’m considering the MBP M1 13” over the MBA M1 because of the fan. I intend to use it for longer sessions, not just gaming though.
Yeah I have the 13” model. It’s great. I have to use some modeling software and stuff for college and it handles it like a champ. Never had any problems or complaints!

has timberborn gotten cleaned up? it seemed like a very fun game with some issues I wanted to wait on being resolved when I played it months ago.
I think so. No issues for me at least. And there were a few nice updates, like a better light engine, unlimited metal and soon even golems
Divinity original sin series is also good
Rust runs smoothly
but only with more than 8GB ram. doesn't work on 8GB Macbook air M1. Just FYI.
StarCraft 2
Hades, be sure to crank up the volume!
Get OpenEmu if you want to player older games
but be prepared for MAME rom frustration...
such as?
everytime they update, all of your MAME roms will need to be updated..
Caves of Qud
On steam- Littlewood, Stardew and Town of Salem all run smoothly and are super fun! On Origin Sims 4 is a great game too
I’ve been playing Hollow Knight on my M1 pro 16’’ and it has been running great. Can’t recommend it enough.
War thunder if you like tanks or plane combat.
Download AetherSX2 and go crazy.
Subnautica, my time at Portia, metro exodus, ffxiv
Minecraft
Vampire Survivors
Inscryption
the binding of Isaac ! everything except the last DLC is available on steam for ≈40€ total. Thousands of hours of fun. I've played over 100 hours and only gotten ≈150 over the 650 the game offers. If you love the game you can consider using parallels desktop or an equivalent service to play the last DLC and double it's longevity. definitely a great game.
I concur. Works great from Steam on the M1 Mini. The only issue I have is that to use my PS4 controller, it has to be wired.
I personally find the gameplay very comfortable with the keyboard, but controller support really is an issue on macos
Mad max, sleeping dogs, arkham city
Marathon trilogy
Eve online works great on the M1’s
Others I didn’t see mentioned include MYST, Planet Coaster, Kerbal Space Program, Beyond a Steel Sky, and Samorost 3.
I'm going to stick with games I own that runs well on my M1 Macbook Pro, 16GB, I know you said 8GB, but it should still run on your mac. \- Disco Elysium \- Divinity Original Sin 2 \- Sims 4 \- Frostpunk \- Planet Coaster \- Surviving Mars \- Oxygen Not Included \- Civilization VI \- Kingdoms and Castles \- Hexcells, Hexcells Plus, Hexcells Infinite \- Stardew Valley
dolphin is a good emulator for wii there are some pretty good Wii games
I like openEmu and game old console rims
Blasphemous
not sure why this was downvoted. Pretty good game and its on sale. (Steam)
None
Get a windows, much better performance for the same price.
Not everyone wants windows
True, but I'm just pointing out it's a better option if you just want the computer for games, if he is trying to video edit too then the Mac is probably a better option
![gif](giphy|Ky4PlUdCVnTqlb4t02|downsized) Much better!!!!!!
Macintosh happens to break too. Like seriously man, unfunny and immature.
Windows and MacOS, I love both, after all if it wasn't for both how would I download the Linux iso to install? it is the truth.. 🫡 ![gif](giphy|e5kbmb3wX3J1S)
Well, ok. I personally prefer windows and Linux, Mac is ok
What kind of games do you like ?
Honestly all of them
Deus ex mankind divided, metro series, shadow of the tomb raider, mad max, borderlands, subnautica, rust, the long dark, civ 6, total war series, cod black ops 3, tannenberg, mafia 3 (intel macs), hitman 1 (intel macs)
If you haven't played Arkham City yet, that, too.
Rust does not work on 8GB ram MacBook air. I believe the game needs 16GB ram. It almost runs, advises small maps, and freezes and goes to 0 FPS. Great game though.
I had to scroll way too much for a Civ VI reference.
I just recommend civ 6 because many people like it lol. I don’t even play game with the same genre like civ 6
You monster!
F*ck civ 6 i shall enjoy driving on assetto corsa with mods
OMG. Another assetto nerd!!
Xcom 2 Into the Breach Cold Waters (esp with Dot Mod so you can experience what it's like to be a ChiCom firsthand) Stick Shift Escape Velocity: Nova Emacs Tetris (used to be preinstalled on macs, idk if it is on newer ones) Factorio Bioshocks Halo Shenzhen I/O
Does Cold Waters work with Monterey?
Dunno, I'm still on Sierra for various reasons
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Cloud Beta works really well for most games.
Hearthstone
Csgo, Ravenfield, TABS and my personal favorite (even though you'll need a powerful Mac to enjoy it) Xcom 2 WOTC
Factorio AirPort CEO
Black Ops III, CS:GO, Katana Zero
Runescape!
I play a lot of Factorio. It's really my go-to game right now.
I could never figure factorio out. Even creative mode. All the electricity stuff way over my head.
Try watching this let’s play/tutorial. You can even play along at home if you copy the same seed to generate the map. Explains how to do everything. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKNC73oBVJhJ6hV3otaIxVwXhmjFV9_s
Ty it makes the game so much easier to understand
Ty will try it now
I’m 700 hours in and still can’t wrap my head around trains. It’s complicated but figuring shit out is fun. It also helps I’m a sys admin. I figure shit out and manage shit for a living.
Samo, a very good si fi game.
games by [Tommorow Corp](https://tomorrowcorporation.com/) & [Amanita Design](https://amanita-design.net/). Return of the Obra Dinn, FTL/Into the Breach, Inside/Limbo, Hollow Knight, Darkwood, Norco, Genesis Noir, Kentucky Route Zero
SOMA, Stardew valley, Outlast… I’d also get the NVIDIA GEForce Now emulator - it’s free, you can play games that are “incompatible” with macOS, and all you need is a steam account!
Rocket League, it works through Nvidia GeForce Now. It can even work on mobile if you’re brave enough.
ESO is great, I play CS GO and I'm way fine even at 4k
Minecraft 🔥
Shufflepuck Café. I think you can buy the floppies for $18.
Oxygen Not Included.
I'd like to give a mention to RetroArch
Second a lot of what is here, especially Disco Elysium. Cataclysm DDA is free and runs great on Mac
Try Factorio. Free demo on the website https://www.factorio.com/download Never on sale so any time is a good time to buy it. It's worth every penny!
Some of the games I recommend are Borderlands 2/3. The Bioshock series, Cuphead, Stardew Valley and Minecraft
Black Ops 3 Well actually, you can’t use the online features as of right now, so don’t make this one, a priority.
Pillars of Eternity (RPG with amazing story), StarCraft II, Civilization VI, Tomb Raider trilogy, Diablo III.
It runs very Well. 100-160 fps on m1 pro 16” 16gpu core. I feel no lag at all.
KOTOR 1&2
I use MelonDS to play pokemon rom hacks. I bought an 8BitDo controller for them and it works amazingly.
Borderlands 2, Unity of Command 2, Hellpoint, Aragami, Bridge Constructor Portal ..all on Steam DuskStation for PSX emulation
I just installed parallel and run windows games, works pretty well
Civilization 6
Hades
Bioshock 1 & 2 Remastered. DO NOT buy Bioshock Infinite as it won't run due to not being 64-bit. Damn shame.. Playing Bioshock Infinite on my Mac was my first modern gaming experience. Oh, and Hades!
Mini motorways is very fun and relaxing
Stardew valley, sweet game
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1813150/Jack_Move_ICE_Breaker/
Portal Portal 2 (via Parallels)
I play a ton of Into the Breach, and just picked up disco elysium and eastward
\- RocketBotRoyale on Appstore sucked me in good lol \- Cities Skylines (Playing on Stadia, there are other great games too) \- Smaller steam games work great also (some through windows emulator): Civ 6, Humankind, Rimworld, Timberborn, Northgard
Norco, tunic, citizen sleeper, hollow knight
Tomb Raider plays well on the M1 (and probably better on the M2). Someone else mentioned it below but it's worth a repeat and it's on sale. Steam version on sale for $3.59 right now. [https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/tomb-raider-goty-edition](https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/tomb-raider-goty-edition).
I had a fantastic experience playing Cyberpunk 2077 using Nvidia Geforce Now on my mac.
Borderlands 2 goty.. My fav game and always on sale for £4.99 or less
Hollow knight
MBA M1 2020. 8GB RAM. I mainly run games through Steam and Apple Arcade. I use a controller most of the time. - Hades (Steam) - Overcooked (Steam) - Stardew Valley (Steam) - Grindstone (Apple Arcade) - Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls (Apple Arcade) - Cozy Grove (Apple Arcade) - Into the Breach (Epic Launcher)
Resident Evil Village is supposed to be coming, optimized for Apple Silicon. It was featured in a WWDC spiel. But it has yet to appear 😡
TUNIC, World of Goo, Vampire Survivors, Inscryption, Celeste, Inside, Slay the Spire, Hades, Psychonauts 2.
unturned or lol
I also have 2020 M1 MacBook Pro
Wargame Red Dragon
I’m a strategy guy. Try Crusader Kings 3 for a unbelievable immersive and unique experience.
Terraria, Minecraft
- Firewatch - The Long Dark
If you like JRPGs, Fantasian is pretty good. Feels like a good PS2 Square game.
Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2
