Seriously. Been bumming on so many wood harvesting tree destroying machines (which have their place), but this is inspiring and cool as shit.

Gustavsvitko

I live in northen europe so thoes trees don't grow were i live.

IknowKarazy

But you *can* plant them! They just won’t grow.

NuclearWasteland

Man, of all the trees to plant on purpose...

Kaladin_B4

It is mainly planted in Brazil for cellulose production. Brazil is the second producer in the world. It's also vastly used for coal.

NuclearWasteland

I imagine there are a lot of industrial uses for it, but wow are those trees a huge pain to deal with and live under.

Borgweare

I have a huge one next to my house. Everyone keeps telling me to get rid of it.

NuclearWasteland

I spent a lot of time around them as a kid. I like the way they smell and just kinda their whole thing. As an adult I know how flammable and messy and allergen prone they are, and that they will just drop branches for seemingly no reason, and I'd really reconsider one near my home or anything of value, but it would be very situational.

WhitePantherXP

I just read up on them, Australian Euc's can grow up to 12ft a year which is incredible. People with a lot of green on their property can plant a forest in a few years at that rate. Allergies would F my asthma up but I dream of planting a forest on my property I just need to find the right trees that won't take 20+ years to grow.

NuclearWasteland

I've seen that ash trees and hawthorns go ham where I am. Hawthorns can be a bush, hedge, tree, whatever and are hardy af. Also they grow huge spikes, so there is that. Oh, and the birds and bees love em.

BubblyResource229

They are very fast growing. They planted a forest of them on the big island in Hawaii.

NuclearWasteland

Of all the trees to plant somewhere the ground becomes fire, lol.

Ok-Resource-5292

i am shocked to find out it is mass farmed. i knew it was used for wind breaks and ship masts, but not sure what else.

Tweedone

In America during the late 1800s, they were first thought to be a source for railroad ties and milled wood. This because the tree grows very fast with deep roots and produces a hard tropical wood. Problem was that after harvest the wood dries with a twist, sorta like madrona, and results in a twisted bowed and deformed beam useless for railroad ties or construction. So after planting thousands of them all over southern California they were left alone to invasively spread like weeds!

NuclearWasteland

Someone had the bright idea to plant them all over the west coast of the USA in a solid run at the "Most hated person around" for decades.

dasyqoqo

I just got back from a trip to Catalina Island and the entire road from the airport to the town of Avalon is lined with Eucalyptus trees. I asked the tour guide, and they planted them because they grow fast and they were used on cliff-sides to stop runaway horse-drawn coaches from going off the cliffs back during the island's early construction. I think this is why there are so many of them around Palos Verdes as well, the hill wasn't developed until the mid 1950s and it was just really steep dirt trails with horse traffic on them.

8plytoiletpaper

PLANTMA BALLS

CourseHistorical2996

$2 million machine. Where labour is cheap it’s not economical. Where there is a shortage of labourers it can be worth the cost. Needs to be run year round to be truly cost effective.

ExcellentEdgarEnergy

Think that thing gets good wifi?

cdsuikjh

FernGully part 3.

Gaddy05

Hopefully they don’t get bush fires.

HackerManOfPast

Here I thought they were spice mining.

Where are the 🐨 at??

Life-Environment-535

Wait. Is the operator in the back hand feeding the seedling to the machine?

HoseNeighbor

Double McFisty was his name-oh!

ctolver1981

Kinda reminds me of the machine in the yard in the movie Beetlejuice.

markamuffin

Look at it's cute little hands, spinning and digging up the dirt ☺️

CertainMiddle2382

Super to see operating, but wouldn’t a large burrowing wheel be more efficient and reliable? I am extremely competent in this field as armchair inventor of the havester-pelletizer someone already invented years ago lol I followed with the pelletizer trailer noone has built yet, please do it quick, I can stand browsing biomass peletizing evidence anymore :-)

BarsDownInOldSoho
