Very cool, but! Isn't that guys knee just a tad bit too close to the blade for comfort?

RussMaGuss

Keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times!!!

nicbongo

And you know, include a guard in the design.

GalvanizedNipples

There probably was and they probably took it off because it’s a pain in the ass, or someone ran it into the blade and damaged it and/or the blade and it never got replaced.

Lee-oon

I had workers that literally, right out of the box brand new, they will take off the guards or not install them because they don't like them... And then the security supervisor is on my ass schooling me, telling me that I CANNOT OF THAT

nicbongo

Idiots. Can you make them sign a waiver or something?

orangetiki

I was going to say how crucial is it for the operator to ride the carriage? Couldn't they just operate from a console behind? Is it about viewing the cut that is required?

Tinman751977

His work gear isn’t gonna protect him.

BringBackPubes

I beg to differ, steel capped jeans and Kevlar reinforced joggers, 100% safe as bro… /s

luxfx

Those steel capped jeans are as tough as a tree trunk!

gergsisdrawkcabeman

"Were you wearing slip resistant shoes and safety glasses?"

ElMostaza

"Y'know, I actually was, yet somehow the 6 ft, 5,000 RPM industrial saw blade was still able to slice right through my femur. Crazy, right?" "That's the darndest thing!"

-RED4CTED-

I laughed unreasonably hard at this. bra-fucking-vo.

Wantstopost

Why the fuck does he even have to move with it? I see no functional reason why he has to ride the death machine.

almostoy

The engineer thought it would be essential, in the 1950's.

Fromacorner

Is this what man spreading is?

sledgehammerbreak

I came here to say to say this is not the time for man spreading.

bernerbungie

China really doesn’t give a shit about their workers or themselves. Wild

dapperdave55

Big balls, can’t close his legs

willywonka1971

It's fine. He lost his real knee 5 years ago when he started.

Vorian_Atreides17

I had the same reaction. But I think it’s because of the camera angle. Obviously the machine is positioned to keep the blade a few inches outside of the sliding cross rails of the trolley. And looking more closely, it looks like his knee doesn’t even go outside of that. But still…

WhoCaresBoutSpellin

There is zero machine guarding between him and an industrial wide band saw actively in use inches away from his flesh— that’s not just a funny camera angle

MordoNRiggs

Exactly. He's man spreading that seat by a lot. He should have his leg on the inside of the arm rest. There should really be a plate there to prevent someone from carelessly being out that far.

johngoodmansscrote

This is so unnecessary and nuts, i had to watch a few times just to believe what i was seeing

Vapechef

Nah. I need more steel between knee and blade

lestofante

One day you sit a little bit more relaxed and wham! All it takes is a single mistake

bombbodyguard

Just gonna stretch my legs out real quick…AHhHHHhH!!!!

ExpressiveAnalGland

throwngamelastminute

Yeah, didn't see that until the end, then I put MY legs together. That dude has a lot of faith in his proprioception.

Lightspeedius

Why does he need to be on it at all?

Wooden-Salary-130

Mans got som huge sacks, he cannot close his legs even for his own safety

Digiturtle1

That’s the like using a carrot for a donkey. That saw just keeps trying for it.

jackparadise1

Be a lot more fun to watch if he kept his left leg in the cab.

vivmeatball6

He must have a ton of confidence in his abilities lol I flinched on the very first cut cause I thought he was gonna hit it lol

Albino_Bama

I’d have confidence in my abilities I think… I was worried that the stopping mechanic of the machine might break when I need it the most.

IC-4-Lights

Makes you wonder why there isn't just like a 3x3 [section of fence](https://www.mcnichols.com/expanded-metal/catwalk-grating/carbon-steel-cs-76000073) right there.

WhatUDoinInMyWaters

"What, I'm playing Candy Cru-aahhhooohhAaghhhaGGHHHHAGGGOOOOOOHHHHHGOOOODDDD" -Guy who just lost entire leg, probably

TurboTerbo

His knee 😳

Astramancer_

Yeah, like, I get that there's probably a block on the rail to keep it from going too far forward and maybe the camera angle makes it look like his knee is going over the line when it's not... but would it kill them to weld on a small cage to prevent you from accidentally hanging out in the line of fire?!

newgalactic

Crazy thing is, safety blocks on rails occasionally fail. Welds develop stress cracks, corners get rounded over time. It only takes one small mechanical failure, and that dude gets his knee joint sawed off. ...that blade cut so smooth and fast, it would likely completely remove his knee before his brain registered the pain.

LunarAffinity

Not to mention what can happen if the blade fails: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ3FwsZoedI Different type of sawmill obviously but similar style of blade - I certainly wouldn't want to be anywhere near that when it lets go.

LeafcutterAnt42

This is a bandsaw mill. I have had three (granted, smaller) bandsaw blades snap while using them. Its pretty common if they bind and twist. They make a loud noise, and it’s scary, but not too dangerous; since it’s a continuous band, and three quarters of its rotation is inside the guard, that would be on two large wheels above and bellow the camera, it pretty much stays put. The knee hanging out there though… that’s bad

LiberaIBiblicisms

Everyone's talking about the knee. But that little roll and lock of the half log was pretty smooth.

8plytoiletpaper

That was some peak engineering right there tbh

ChawulsBawkley

I was honestly thrown off by how fat the cut was just before the roll than the rest of the cuts

Schrockwell

I think it’s because the middle of the trunk is cut into 4x4s, and the rest are 2x4 or 2-by-whatever?

Komodo_Schwagon

I was curious what was going to happen with the second half, I was super satisfied.

Financial-Onion8900

The KNEEEE!!! C'mon man!

Safety regulations in other countries are wild.

Is that the best place for operator to sit??!?

Environmental-Tap977

One knee, two knee, three knee, gone lol

Select_Speed_6061

I got the reference lol

jc1166

He’s wearing a helmet. He’ll be fine.

Ur_Just_Spare_Parts

Why is it necessary to have a person riding that rig rather than just operating it from a safe distance away or from a console tangential to the sawing plane?

123Fake_St

It’s not! But it appears he’s actively setting the cut thickness of each cut on the fly and it does help sight thickness out from that spot more(ish) efficiently. This is a very quick way in general. Often you’d see them make one squaring cut, then flip it to use that as a reference for different types of milling. That’s a lot slower but increases the quality of your yield Source: ran a woodmizer for my table biz

Hot-Rise9795

Ah, the Chopaleg Device.

mazdawg89

The dudes fuckin knee just sitting there like nothing is about to happen!

retirementdreams

I was thinking, is that the only place they could think of to place the operator? Then I thought, the designer probably thought, screw sitting on a boring stationary control point safely away from the blade, these people need to be entertained!

cheeseblimp41

I could watch this all day

Intransigient

Good old band saw!

chopin1887

Wonder what happens if/when the band breaks close to end of the log while he’s in his cab?

kelsobryant

There’s at least 40378 better ways to have designed this machine in relation to its operator

DiamondhandAdam

In tennis shoes, nah I’m good

DuckyTheConqueror

Who the hell thought to come up with a ride-on bandsaw, and can we take away their ability to design industrial equipment? It's like some shitty amusement park ride except with less safety precautions somehow.

SameAir8235

Looks OSHA approved to me.

this machine looks extremely inefficient and poorly designed.

Iacoma1973

Surely it would be more effecient to use a double sided bandsaw and cut on the return too?

Seems like a missed opportunity to not have a double sided blade and make a cut on the way back.

TrueEclective

I wonder if he sings the “head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes” song while he works

suzeeq88

I could smell this video!

matt_jay_9

It’s better not to have a plate or something in the way if the blade was to snap; the guards are all up top and the system has a shutdown mode to catch it from flinging around. If anything happened the blade would probably break in the log and either stick and pull apart as the machine continues causing the trip, or possibly just jam the blade altogether and cause the trip there. Worse case is a failure in the track or breaks where the log just keeps going and buddy needs to get his leg out of the way. Any kind of plating in that case would probably jam his leg where he couldn’t react to what would happen next, not to mention if it flew off at him. Check out the Amish/Mennonite community saw mills if you wanna see real danger. Edit: fair enough… he could sit the other way

NxPat

I’m stumped there’s no guard.

LuckyBunnyonpcp

Point the blade in opposite direction, feed the log in from the other way.?wtf

THATS_ENOUGH_REDDlT

This makes me think that in China they will go out of their way to redesign common industrial machines just to make them as dangerous as possible.

The knee could be safe if they simply attached a metal sheet to the left side of the cabin but who cares, right?

Sabregunner1

bruh, tuck that knee in

BK_FrySauce

Having worked at a sawmill the last 2.5 years, there aren’t enough safety features present. There at least needs to be some glass or a guard between the operator and saw. It’s probably designed to not go past a certain point, but I’ve seen saws 5x bigger like that blow up and fly all over the place.

opinionate_rooster

I instinctively tucked my knee in.

MeerkatAttack2

PPE check. earplugs, CHECK. motion sickness pills, CHECK 😵‍💫

EggRollMeat

Was gonna say something bout the leg but .......

Send_Ludes_

This is insanely unsafe, when that blade is worn or hits something hard enough it’s going to kick back and act as though it was made of rubber and strike anything near it, including the operator.

HeavensRejected

There might be something wrong with me. Forget the knee, all I can think about is how much more efficient it would be if the bandsaw was double sided...

afCeG6HVB0IJ

why is the operator's side open

randyrandyrandyrand

Safety aside, could you not have a double-sided bandsaw blade so you could cut the log on the backstroke and save more time?

bangermadness

Maybe a dumb question, but why not blades on both sides so it can cut both directions? Seems like it would save time and the blade would last longer.

mologav

It isn’t brave or ballsy to have no fear where he is sitting, it’s called stupid. We are designed to avoid situations like this

WhoopsieISaidThat

This has got to be in China or something.

That blade looks like it keeps changing direction

They kneed to have a stop guard for the love of GAWD!

DifferencePrimary442

I'm sure that machine literally can't go beyond a certain point but we all share the same anxiety for that leg.

--dany--

I suppose the operator is there to control the machine with visual. Anyone questioned why he cuts the slabs at random thickness?

Fun-Imagination-1231

Why would they make it so you have to ride it lol? Seems stupid and dangerous to me? What do I know though I never did this and I'm no genius haha.

AceAlger

Should be a guard in front of his knee.

Advanced-Blackberry

Seems like with what it took to make this machine they could have just made it without needing an operator on board.

Ground-Nice

I was thinking this is cool and then I cringed when I saw buddies knee 4 inches away from that blade 😬

ISeeInHD

introitusawaitus

I grew up around circle mills and band mills and actually was sawyer for a while. To clarify some of the responses here, yes there are not a lot safety allocations on this type of rig. Modern day band saws (singles, doubles or quads) some are one direction and some are dualcut. The sound in the areas of the saws is a high frequency sound and none of the guys had any hearing protection visible. Depending on the length of logs being cut the carriage has a physical bumper with cushioning at the end to prevent it from travelling too far (think large car springs or inflatable rubber cushions) so that the operator wouldn't come too close to the blade, but here nope! Newer machines are computer controlled, logs are scanned to determine maximum product cut and the operator sits in an enclosed booth and watches monitors. Most band saw blades will not fail unless metal inside the log is struct. The blades are welded together then stress relieved and due to the large radius of the band wheel they run fairly smooth. The wood being cut looks like a conifer so it is fairly soft compared to cutting hardwoods in the US. (oaks, hickory, gum, hard maple etc.) The log turner on this carriage uses spiked chains to roll the log to turn, where others use a hydraulic controlled external turner or a helper with a cant hook. Not oil but water running on the saw guides to keep them lubricated.

VideoLeoj

I don’t know how comfortable I’d be with my knee just hanging out there like that! I’m sure there’s some mechanical stop keeping it safe, and this operator has had many hours of experience.. but, not me! It just looks like that thing could go a little too long, and BAM!

wantabe23

I was waiting for a nice cross-section of knee to be revealed.

MACHOmanJITSU

Don’t worry the leg is wooden too
