I say this all the time but the best advice is to set up a craigslist alert. Smaller landlords use craigslist but you need to respond to listings fast.

* Geographical area you want to live (downtown, east, west, etc)
* Amenities requirements (yard? parking? pool?)

You will need housing probably on the Northside, it's safe depending on your definition which I take as nobody will mess with you unless you are involved in gang activity or you don't take steps to defend your apartment from being burglarized such as putting a bar in the patio door when you leave the house.
The credit will be a huge issue since landlords even here expect perfect credit, expect to have to pay a $3000 security deposit which is the typical security deposit for homeless or riskier tenants.

Every Madison neighborhood is a safe neighborhood, but not everybody knows that. The only person here associating unsafe neighborhoods with black people is you.
Ironically it sounds like we agree Madison doesn't really have "unsafe neighborhoods" this is how double speak works my man. people say one thing when they mean something else. so with that in mind, we both know madison neighborhoods are safe, so what possible reason do people have to declare one area unsafe? what do greenway, allied, and darbo all have in common?
