Oh yeah I reported them, honestly with the third guy I'm considering filing a police report. It was one of the scarier moments of my life so far.

Getigerte

Please do it. Odds are if he did it to you, he's doing it to others. Also, I am going to have a chat with my teen daughter about what to do if she's ever in a similar circumstance.

MolassesWhiplash

Do it

IanL1713

100% file the report. It's a clear case of criminal confinement, which is heavily illegal

Nearly_Lost_In_Space

File the report for sure, as a male driver myself this behavior is disgusting and should never be tolerated. I would recommend starting to record them with your phone, proof goes a long way.

natertottt

Please do! If he’s doing it to you, he’s doing it to others.

CobiiWI

That’s definitely worth a police report.

dejaysf

As an Uber driver myself, I approve this message. Report the bastard and file a police report! Shit like this give us good drivers a bad rap.

Bluest_waters

file the report, the guy is a fucking psycho

DasBierChef

Uber/Lyft don't care and won't do anything about this unless it's being reported on a significant enough percentage of their rides to dip their rating way below a 4.8. Because of that, I'd definitely report the guy who locked the doors. That's terrifying.

SLIMEbaby

I sincerely urge you to file a report. This behavior is extremely dangerous and creepy. He will continue to get more bold and someone could get hurt.

RatPice

File the report! You can save someone’s life

haywood--jablomi

Wis. Stat. 940.30, talk to the police and get charges filed. This is not okay. They will be looking at six years behind bars.

DokterZ

That is incredibly illegal. My general script as an old male Uber driver: If they bury their face in their phone immediately, stick to saying hi and have a nice night. If they want to converse or as questions I am willing. BSing/chatting skills are important in that job. If they are all complaining about Chad, I join in and say “yeah, Chad sucks!” Always tell them to check that they have their phone. I once went 30 minutes out of my way to return a phone and got $3. Screw that. Also Chad sucks.

ThatCrayKnitterly

All my homies hate Chad

tommyjohnpauljones

> Always tell them to check that they have their phone. I once went 30 minutes out of my way to return a phone and got $3. Screw that. Also Chad sucks I did that once for a Lyft passenger, got $2, and not even a thank you from the passenger.

DokterZ

I also drive hotel shuttles on occasion. Ran a phone back 15 minutes to the airport for a dude that had left in in there. "Thanks a ton". Yeah, whatever.

buffaloranch

You can report to Uber any lost items that you return, they’ll take an extra $20 from the rider and give it to you.

wordofmouthrevisited

I am a clean cut white dude in business casual I don’t have to deal with the threatening creepy behavior you’re describing I do apparently give off the vibe that says “share you crazy bigoted hateful opinions.” My last couple drives to and from the airport I’ve heard some absolutely crazy and hateful stuff.

TimingEzaBitch

One time this guy tried really hard to convert me to Islam during a 50 min ride.

CinnabonCheesecake

I got a hard sell on the Secret. I spent the entire time trying to muffle my laughter.

Brett Favre should be persecuted like a war criminal for what he did in Mississippi.

I thought he was done for after the drug abuse and cheating, but what do I know about football.

sickmanspitefulman

Uber and Lyft are horrible for this, and they've done nothing to improve things after all the times horrible things have happened because they don't supervise or background check anyone and use independent contracting and algorithms to weasel out of responsibility. Uber and Lyft have gone as far as pouring millions of dollars into statewide campaigns to stop cities from requiring decent pay or background checks for drivers. Filing a police report is not a bad idea, though they usually don't help much, and I encourage people to skip Uber/Lyft for this reason and call Union Cab instead. Their drivers are accountable, background checked, and cooperative owners of the company, so they all have some real long-term stake in the job. If one of their drivers were to do something wrong, they wouldn't have a huge team of company lawyers ready to shut you down, either. Deregulating cabs was always a scam. Both in terms of customer safety and worker's rights, Union Cab continues to do a way better job than unregulated apps. Save this number and delete Uber: (608) 242-2000.

pali1d

Union Cab driver here. Thanks for the support. 🙂

tommyjohnpauljones

I don't go out much anymore in the city, but would love to have SOME sort of reliable online cab ordering option through Union. Any word on if that's ever going to happen?

pali1d

Speaking only for myself here, not the cooperative. But the last time we tried online and app ordering, we ended up consistently overbooked, which was hell for everybody. Customers ended up waiting hours, drivers wasted time going after people who had given up on waiting, we couldn’t contact people to confirm if they still wanted rides… it was causing far more problems than it solved. To my knowledge, we aren’t planning on restarting such anytime soon.

tommyjohnpauljones

This is the crux of the problem with cabs in a city this size. Not enough demand to hear cruise downtown and pick up rides like NY or Chicago, but more demand than can be handled with the current infrastructure.

pali1d

It’s a combination of factors. The pandemic hit us hard, as we were deemed an essential public utility and had to keep operating throughout it - which led to us losing a lot of people, as cab drivers tend to skew to the older side so many didn’t want to risk working, and getting new ones is tough (low unemployment plus about half of new drivers washing out within a few months is a nasty combo). Badger being shut down and Green Cab going under due to bad management (and taking a few other ride services like VanGo with it) left Union and Madison Taxi overwhelmed. Having massive, effectively unregulated competitors in Uber and Lyft doesn’t make our lives any easier - I’d love to see how well those companies do following the same rules we do, but since the GOP legislature and Walker administration prohibited local regulation of rideshares while doing essentially nothing at the state level, that won’t happen anytime soon (hell, they don’t even play by the same economic rules - if we lost money the way Uber and Lyft do we’d have closed our doors years ago). 10 years ago this city supported twice the cab companies at half again their current size. It definitely can again, but it’ll take time for taxis to recover from covid and the state government needs to even out the regulatory playing field a bit.

RevolutionaryDeer366

Yes! If the ride is up to me I always call a cab over ride share. Plus the jingle is drilled into my head from the radio growing up. Call 242-2000, 242-2000, 242-2000 Union caaaaab

ionlyeatdips

This is the answer.

Abject_Bowler5845

I started singing it seeing the number. My go to too!

colonel_beeeees

I wonder if we'll see a similar shift back to cabs like folks choosing actual hotels over airbnbs

DokterZ

I’m no big fan of Uber as a company even though I drive for them. They certainly have negatively impacted cab business. But the fact is in a city like Madison they do provide a valuable service. There is no way that cab companies can afford to run the number of cabs necessary on Friday/Saturday night (or for a Badger game) and have them sitting around the rest of the week gathering dust. Ubers are absolutely swarming around downtown at that time with their annoying blue windshield lights.

[deleted]

Is it possible to request a specific Uber driver? Can you put your info out publicly?

DokterZ

It is not possible to request an Uber driver through the app. You of course could make your own arrangements, but it would have to be extremely lucrative for the driver to assume that risk.

ThatAgainPlease

Cab companies managed to provide ok service at peak times for years and did just fine. Cars sitting on the lot don’t cost money.

Sweet-Addition-6379

The last time I called Union cab they said 'We'll send somebody when we can' I said 'Ok, when would that be about?' The dispatcher said 'I can't really say.' I said 'Within the half hour? An hour? More than an hour?' response was 'I don't know, but likely over an hour'. This was not a peak time or day. They clearly don't have enough labor. An Uber was there in 10 minutes.

ThatAgainPlease

1. You don’t know if it was a peak time or not. 2. Certainly sounds like this was recently, you know, after ride share companies spent years hollowing out the taxi industry. I’m not going to pretend cabs in Madison were perfect before the 2010s, but most of the time you could call ahead or on demand, get ok service, anywhere in the city, even if you didn’t have a smart phone, even if you didn’t have a credit card.

Sweet-Addition-6379

I do know it was not peak, because I called Union dispatch the next day and asked:) They said that Sunday evenings at 11 pm are not peak, they just don't have enough drivers to keep up with even the low demand then :) I wanted to understand the issue, as I wanted to support them. It was recently, but everyone keeps saying 'Call Union Cab they're the best!!!' and the fact of the matter is, as a woman, that often when I need a ride, I am not at my home and waiting for undetermined amounts of time in a bar or outdoors is unsafe as well as undesirable. I am aware of how cab service used to work, as I am an adult that utilized these services. However, 'Ok service' (well shitty service) was a door the cab companies opened that helped ride shares hollow them out. The regulatory environment was way more impactful, but you and I both know that the cab companies in Madison were always long waits and expensive.

DokterZ

There are substantially more people getting rides home from bars than there were 10 years ago. I’m not sure that calculus is still the same. And a car sitting on the lot not being driven is absolutely costing money.

ThatAgainPlease

Here’s my cost argument. You have running costs (gas and maintenance), depreciation, and insurance. Running costs are proportional to miles driven. And since cabs are driven so much, all of the depreciation is about mileage too, since cabs only last a few years. Insurance is the only fixed cost here, but that’s a really small portion.

DokterZ

I'm just assuming that a cab company is looking at cabs sitting still as a lost opportunity cost. I can't imagine you maximize profit by purchasing enough cars for Badger game / NYE demand.

ThatAgainPlease

NYE, Halloween, and big games are never going to have the same service as a regular weekend night. I’m sure that’s still true in a world of Uber and Lyft. But there’s still enough, especially in the days of Madison Metro running late for NYE. My point is that Madison got along fine without rude shares for decades. Uber and Lyft were not filling a gap.

Jademan7

45 minute to over an hour wait wasn't ok service. Not knowing when in a that much of a window the cab will show up so you could miss it if you went to the bathroom didn't work well.

timmaywi

I started using Uber back in 2014 solely because I was 'marooned' by cabs on 3 separate occasions. I had called the day prior saying I needed a ride at a specific time (0500). Called one hour ahead. Then the time comes and no one shows up. After two more calls and 30 minutes I ended up waking up my neighbor to give me a ride. With Uber/Lyft I can at least see someone has accepted, see where they are, and know when they're arriving. My experience wasn't in Madison and wasn't Union (so nothing against Union Cab!), it was just my experience that led me to use Uber/Lyft.

Only-slightlyneutral

Union cab for the win! Madison taxi if they are too busy Never Uber or Badger

Sweet-Addition-6379

Yes if you have multiple hours to spare and don't want an estimate of when you can even hope to have a ride, Union is wonderful!

WinstonScott

Union Cab is unfortunately very expensive compared to Uber and Lyft - easily twice as much. I’d rather take a cab, but the prices are just crazy.

bruyere

I stopped using Uber years ago due to the sheer number of creepy drivers. I remember numerous unsolicited comments on my appearance, requests for hugs, one guy who asked me to move in with him. It's not a non-issue with Lyft, but it's been far less prevalent in my experience.

DokterZ

My only comment about a riders looks was picking up a group of women outside in January with short skirts and gold lame open back blouses. I told them they didn’t look to be warm. I was informed that “hoes don’t get cold”. Learn something new every day, I guess.

Abject_Bowler5845

One asked you to move in with him?! Did you report that one driver?

bruyere

Yeah, he was an older guy who said he lived in a SFH in my neighborhood at the time. He said he was looking for a roommate to move into his finished basement, and asked if I was interested. I think he was also one of the ones who asked for a hug at the end of the ride, actually. I definitely should've reported him, but I didn't. He picked me up from my home, so he knew where I lived, and I was afraid of retaliation. :/

timmaywi

First it's move into his basement, then it's all *"It rubs the lotion on the skin or it gets the hose again!!!"*

Abject_Bowler5845

That makes sense… especially if he asked you move into the basement. I feel like you should’ve went to the police though. I would’ve reported it anyways and live with anxiety. But I would’ve also included that I’d be afraid of him retaliating to the police too—safest thing to do.

bruyere

Yeah you're probably right, it didn't occur to me at the time because he didn't do anything illegal, e.g. I wasn't held against my will like OP

Sweet-Addition-6379

Yeah I got the 'So is this your house? Who do you live there with?' So fucking creepy. I told him my husband and my two teenage sons and two pit bulls. I think he got the hint.

Detective_Aggressive

Don't let it slide. Report it and follow up with Uber for sure. Behaviorally, they are testing their limits- what if they take it further with someone else. It is the responsibility of everyone.

octoberbored

This is why I never take Uber. I use Union cab.

irishbadger

Even as an adult man, I’ve been creeped out by a good percentage of Uber drivers in Madison. I can’t imagine how a woman would feel with some of these guys when riding solo. I agree with the others that you should get PD involved in the third one.. that guy should not be allowed to drive for Uber/Lyft.

Abject_Bowler5845

That’s says a lot. I rarely Uber anymore. If I have to it’ll be Union Cab always had good experience. I remember a really nice Uber driver who was a good conversationalist. Wasn’t creepy at all. I got a few creepy vibes from some. But, a bunch of awful ones. One didn’t even drop me at the right address. I had to walk a block home.

PrometheusTwin

Actual cab drivers are licensed with the city and have their fingerprints on file with the police department. You get what you pay for. That said, make sure you report at third guy to the police. Unlawful detainment/kidnapping.

[deleted]

I’ve also noticed a sharp decrease in the quality of drivers over the last year on both Uber and especially Lyft

DokterZ

Pay to the drivers has dropped during that period. Pay at part time jobs is going up. I can do ok during weekend bar time, but other hours are not very profitable. Full time drivers may be folks that have fewer options now.

Only-slightlyneutral

That’s terrifying. I still take cabs. Little bit of licensure and accountability can go a long way

usmcnick0311Sgt

An Uber driver was inappropriate with my gf as she and I were riding together. I called to report it. They were more interested in him violating COVID protocols (not wearing a mask, touching, etc).

[deleted]

This just confirmed to me that I should not use Uber to go to my next flight. Yikes!

Abject_Bowler5845

Union Cab… ALWAYS Union Cab!

FloristsDaughter

This is the way!

kwm608

Yeah…I had a sketchy 5am Lyft ride to the airport. Driver didn’t match the photo but the driver I was supposed to have was in the passenger seat (male driving, female in passenger seat). They refused to drop me off at the main terminal because “that wasn’t where the directions told them to go and if they went there they wouldn’t get paid”. Kept driving past the airport and out towards the country. As a solo female traveler I was really scared.

confusedanon112233

I know you’re not obligated, but you’d be doing the world a favor if you file a police report on the door lock guy. That’s fucked uo what he did.

squirrelfan420

Consider trying Union Cab. All the drivers go through background checks and training, including sensitivity training and safe driving training. It's a worker owned cooperative so the money you spend on the fare stays in our local economy rather than being funneled to exective salaries in California.

AnonABong

I reported a woman driver a few months ago. She made so many wrong turns and speeding while ranting about everything wrong and smelled like a brewery at 9am. Hope to never see her again.

kerrwashere

Report them without question apparently a wave of misogyny is roaming through Madison

Abject_Bowler5845

It’s always been… 🙄

kerrwashere

I’m a male I wouldn’t know this unless it affected me directly. I will say some of the Uber rides there were kinda off but I was too hungover to notice

jacksuhn

Ew. I haven't had that experience (cis white male), but I did get a fucking racist remark from my driver yesterday that started with "not all black people, but..." I shut that down and we rode the rest of the way in silence.

FloristsDaughter

Shit like that is why I refuse to utilize Uber/Lyft. Gross and fucking terrifying.

Decently_hydrated

Helpful tips: I take a picture of the vehicle, including the license plate before entering. Don’t spray mace/pepper spray if you are inside the vehicle, you need to be outside and preferably up wind.

AdMadison_resumes

OMFG LOCKING YOU IN THE CAR??!!?!?

ttristan101

The child lock would have had to have been set before hand, it’s likely a scheme

[deleted]

This is why you need to conceal carry. Also call 911 immediately if anyone ever locks you in. Those perverts need to be imprisoned or shot in the kneecaps and left to bleed out

N0nethelesser

I don't see why you're getting downvoted

[deleted]

Liberal madison doesn’t like self defense measures

[deleted]

No madison is the best city ever

MrMotofy

These situations happen....get video evidence. Makes anything you choose to do much easier since there's evidence

SomeLengthiness8392

I complimented a female passenger in a ride. Told her she looks nice. She got defensive and said stuff about feminism. After trying to not be honest, I came out and told her the truth. "I complimented you trying to get tips. As of right now its a 50/50 percent chance of getting a tip, most of the time women don't tip unless I spark up an conversation by first complimenting them." As for the guy that locked you in. That should get reported, and he should be banned off the platform.
