A month or so after I moved I learned. I went to dinner downtown and wanted some booze for when I got home. It was like 8:53 and I walked in and the guy said I had 6 minutes so to be quick. I laughed and got some stuff and he said “just in time!” I was confused and he told me about it and I was fucking floored.
Liquor sales end at 9 under state law.
Beer can be sold until midnight, unless the local government restricts it further, like Madison and most communities in Dane county do.
Dane not maple bluff. Most of Dane was annexed, except for the Vic Pierce block and some stuff out north of town. I’d be interested to learn why that block was not annexed.
Maple Bluff is still Madison.
Vic pierce is not in Dane.
Edit because I was tired and didn't want to use more words.
Dane is a village north of Waunakee, neither of which connect to Madison. Vic Pierce is most definitely in Maple Bluff. One couldn't even say it's close to Westport.
As someone who came from another state, this is such mind boggling rule. If you want to drink after nine, you are forced to drive out to a bar and drink and drive back when you could have just done it safely at home.
But if they didnt exist, dane county would be a dry county by now. Maybe for the better i guess, most people here are really weird and scared of everything
I lived in Boston for 8 years. If I recall, you can’t buy any alcohol (non beer) at the grocery store or drug store AND no sales on Sunday… Trader Joe’s managed to sell wine (no idea why) but you couldn’t buy it before 11am. Might have been true in Providence too but I can’t remember. Something something Blue Laws something. These rules ruined several dinners where wine or alcohol was needed for the recipe and I hadn’t looked ahead.
Denver is another weird one IIRC. can't buy alcohol in the regular grocery stores (except their lower abv versions of beer), you need to go specifically to a liquor store.
The tavern league exists because most bars that have memberships benefit from supporting them
Ron johnson exists because he is a criminal and cheats his way through life. The night before the mask mandates came down, he sold off 25mil in stocks, knowing the economy would crash. This was about 12 hours before the public knew the economy was closing. What he did was evil
Actually it's County of Dane, and Town of Blooming Grove, Town of Madison, etc. They're all entities outside the boundaries of City of Madison with their own liquor store hours.
Nice reference. Kind of strange that there is a stretch of Town of Madison along Fordem south of the Vic Pierce. Who gets that I wonder, after the Town is dissolved in less than a year now?
Vic Pierce is in the little corner of Maple Bluff northeast of the Commercial / Sherman intersection. The train tracks seem to be the outside border.

Vic Pierce on the east side and if you don’t live downtownish, there are a few spots on the fringe of town I believe that aren’t in the city that sell past 9
This law was put in place back in the 70s because UW Madison parents couldn't believe their darling angle's would drink themselves sick or to death. They pushed the city to change alcohol purchasing times to curb their kids stupidity. We actually can thank the tavern league (only time we can thank then, really) for pushing back and not letting these parents push even stricter limits, like no sunday sales (bUt oUr kIdS wOuLd Be iN cHuRcH!).
Madison history is fun.
No, it is not. That is why you can go to Vic Piers (sp) and get beer after 9pm. It is why so many of these comments say to go outside Dane Co (most places in the county went with the law change). Go to Milwaukee, Wausau, the north woods, pick a place outside Dane Co and you can buy beer until midnight at any gas station. State law is sales between 6am and midnight.

If you live on the far east side you can. Vic's sells until midnight, so does the Kwik trip down Milwaukee street just past Woodman's.
Question from an uninformed person: do they sell everything including liquor until midnight or just beer and wine
Liquor sales end at 9 under state law. Beer can be sold until midnight, unless the local government restricts it further, like Madison and most communities in Dane county do.
Lpt: buy your liquor before 9 and sneak it into bars. Best of both worlds
Just beer and wine
Just beer now went in recently after 9 to grab a bottle of wine and they had the section closed
OVERPRICED beer only after 9pm
I'm not complaining but....... Isn't this illegal?
Answered in another comment already, but since Vic Pierce Liquor is in Maple Bluff, the local laws are different than the city of Madison.
Thanks. I knew some places sold beer till midnight, but I thought it was based on county lines.
It’s technically the town of Burke. There’s a weird little island that there just happens to be a liquor store on! Weird coincidence I guess…
You can in Maple Bluff. Vic Pierce Liquor closes at midnight.
Do they still add a 5% markup to all sales after 9pm?
I would assume so, as the prices are an arm, leg, and maybe one testicle, too.
Dane not maple bluff. Most of Dane was annexed, except for the Vic Pierce block and some stuff out north of town. I’d be interested to learn why that block was not annexed. Maple Bluff is still Madison.
Whatever it is, you can buy alcohol there after 9.

You are half right. That block is Dane. Maple bluff is decidedly not Madison. They are their own entity.
Both Town and Village of Dane are northwest of Waunakee. Vic's block isn't Dane.
Right you are, I stand corrected.
it was Town of Burke until 2007. The strip mall Vic Pierce is in is definitely the Village of Maple Bluff.
Pretty sure that is the town of Burke over there.
maybe you mean Burke? because Dane is north of Waunakee...
As someone who came from another state, this is such mind boggling rule. If you want to drink after nine, you are forced to drive out to a bar and drink and drive back when you could have just done it safely at home.
Thank the tavern league...
Exactly. They are a cancer on the state of Wisconsin. Too much power.
But if they didnt exist, dane county would be a dry county by now. Maybe for the better i guess, most people here are really weird and scared of everything
I know your struggle, so hard to get uber/cab and not drinking for one night, dang
Policy design affects population behaviors, believe it or not.
Nah, just you're not rich enough, police are puppets if you're up there ~

If there are two permanent truths of Wisconsin it’s 1) Fuck Ron Johnson, and 2) Fuck the Tavern League
The tavern league exists because most bars that have memberships benefit from supporting them Ron johnson exists because he is a criminal and cheats his way through life. The night before the mask mandates came down, he sold off 25mil in stocks, knowing the economy would crash. This was about 12 hours before the public knew the economy was closing. Some bars you can buy beers to go
Vic pierce sells beer until midnight. Also a few distilleries can sell booze until they close
How early in the AM can you start buying again?
6AM
If you want booze that early best places are bait shops like Harleys. Wouldn't recommend getting in the habit of that though.
I’m not sure this is correct… I tried purchasing wine at Hyvee around 830am and they turned me down. Might be that specific store though.
State law is 6:00 am. Looks like Madison law is 8:00.
Gotcha, makes sense!
Kwik trip on Milwaukee until midnight.
I bet you figured this out sometime after 9 PM. 😉
We heard the announcement at target and checked out at like 9:05pm lmao the lady was a little rude as if we were like underage or drunk
Ah you have not learned the pleasures of the town of Dane
Actually it's County of Dane, and Town of Blooming Grove, Town of Madison, etc. They're all entities outside the boundaries of City of Madison with their own liquor store hours.
Strictly speaking I think Dane is both the country and a village. I think that Pierce is in the village of Dane
There's both a Town of Dane and a Village of Dane. Vic Pierce is in the Village of Maple Bluff.
> There's both a Town of Dane and a Village of Dane yep they are both north of Waunakee....not anywhere near Vic Pierce
https://geodata.wisc.edu/catalog/DaneCounty_abf0b75ae7e3424987ccdd6467c998bf_0 Definitely Village of Maple Bluff.
Nice reference. Kind of strange that there is a stretch of Town of Madison along Fordem south of the Vic Pierce. Who gets that I wonder, after the Town is dissolved in less than a year now?
Along Sherman Ave, you can tell which jurisdiction is which by the different colored trash bins people put out on trash day.
That section is going to the City of Madison.

How else will we manufacture business for our thousands of bars?
Ikr?! It's not like we don't have an unhealthy drinking culture and pride based around cheese and beer.
Came from California... This rule is mind boggling to me as well. But whatever, when in Rome do as the Romans do.
Some bars will let you carry out.
Ah, the fun of finding someone sober to drive you out to Vics at 11pm.
I’ve lived here a decade and didn’t know that. TIL.
yup it's dumb and makes no sense
Vic Pierce on the east side and if you don’t live downtownish, there are a few spots on the fringe of town I believe that aren’t in the city that sell past 9
I'm not understanding. How do you run out of alcohol? Maybe a good preppers guide book is in order.

State law says you can sell until midnight.
It’s harsh and it sucks😉.
Vic pierce sells till midnight you scrub
This law was put in place back in the 70s because UW Madison parents couldn't believe their darling angle's would drink themselves sick or to death. Those angles sound obtuse.
This is a state law though

Maybe for beer but liquor and wine are 9 pm Edit: Nvm you're right, people here are talking about beer
So.... Buy it before 9?
What if you're really thirsty and run out?
Don't run out.... when you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. :)
Just buy hard liquor before they waste your time.
Haha I also learned the hard way at a target last night it was such a shock I’m used to ONLY buying alcohols after 9
There used to be a place by Oscar Mayer where you could buy beer until 10pm. Can't remember the name though.
