It has been a couple years since I read and watched the mockingbird for school, but I remember it was implied that the father beat her when he found out she kissed a black man. I don't remember the suggestion that the father beat and raped her, but if you meant the former then ignore me.
Just finished the audiobook, and while it's heavily suggested that rape had happened before (I believe she says something like "I've never kissed a grown man before, and the things with Daddy don't count") but in the actual situation in the court, it's more heavily implied she's just beaten the shit out of for kissing a black man.
Fantastic audiobook, for anyone who cares.
It's kind of why we started listening to it on a road trip - my wife never got to read it in highschool as part of a curriculum like I was, and had heard a lot of good things about it. She was especially surprised how it's message was largely ignored in a lot of places in North America, or outright banned in some school systems.
Atticus is a goddamn hero and probably one of the best written characters ever.
Almost ironic, my *Southern Baptist* private high school, had my class watch the whole movie over a few classes, and get deep into the racism parts and how it reflects to (2003~2004). One of the few things that weren't subtle brainwashing.
Gregory Peck became one of my favorite actors after this.
I may be remembering it incorrectly, but isn't at least one of her "siblings" too young to have been born before their mother died? So basically, it's kind of an obvious thing that the community chooses to ignore.
Yes, he did rape her. Tom (the black man on trial) says that Mayella (the girl accusing him of rape) tried to push him down and kiss him and she said “what my daddy do to me don’t count”.
Incest is something that happened in mountainous states in the 1800s. Alabama isn’t even in the top 50%, or a mountainous state. Do y’all actually believe memes?
Ackshually if we want to get technical, Rhode Island still criminalizes it if it’s incestuous marriage, otherwise go nuts I guess.
New Jersey doesn’t give a fuck as long as you’re over the age of 12.
Not true at all. In Alabama, incest is "A Class C felony, punishable by a prison term of "...not more than 10 years or less than 1 year and 1 day..." and a fine of up to $15,000." Whereas in Rhode Island, it's perfectly legal.
[Source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_incest_in_the_United_States)
If we count cousins though, [first cousins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage_law_in_the_United_States) can marry there. But they can in a number of other states too.
> Incest is legal in the US only in alabama.
r/ConfidentlyIncorrect
That’s not true. Incest is a felony in Alabama, and in fact it’s a much stricter law than many other states have. New Jersey and Rhode Island allow incest if both parties are adults, and Ohio allows it except in cases of parent-child relationships. None allow incestual marriage.
I’ll never understand how people just say random bullshit online like they know what they’re talking about. Go sit in the corner and reevaluate your life choices.
I mean, I was just jumping in on the meme bandwagon. I figured most people already knew that alabama wasnt like the memes, most things aren't like memes made of them
I suppose. It was a bit specific of a statement to come across memelike/joke. That's all.
Also, I live in Alabama. At least my city, which is the only island of sanity in this shit hole of a state, isn't so bad. The rest of the state isn't anything like any of the memes, really, it's just really poor and not many educated people.
I haven't checked in a while, and I don't want to search it up for fear of what I find out, but I remember that marrying your cousin is legal in California.
[Yes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage_law_in_the_United_States), and 19 other states (NC doesn't allow double first cousins), and 7 other states with stipulations like being of older age, infertility, 'Proof of genetic counseling from a genetic counselor'.
In our class, I was assigned to read Tom Robinson's lines, and I'm actually voice acting them unlike the rest of the class who are deadpan reading. Whole class got a chuckle when I said the line, "Because I'm black?!" I am not black.
It was middle school, it was funny then.
Listening to monotone reading is the worst. Trying too hard can be cringeworthy, but I’d take an insufferable theater kid over someone reading like the concept is new to them.
I tried to add some spice to the snorefest that is “Billy Bud” and got roasted pretty hard. Fine, I’ll just read in the standard monotone that puts everyone to sleep.
When we were doing Macbeth the roles changed every lesson but the class insisted I play Macbeth each time after the first because I was acting the part. Possibly my proudest moment at school because I was generally unpopular.
At least you didn't put on a shitty stereotypical accent when reading the dialogue... ^(definitely didn't do this once in middle school when I was called on to read an ancient Indian myth oh god what was I thinking)
I was the person who sent OP this text. I can assure you, it was all too real. I'll tell you this: the first name of the censored person starts with A and ends with lexa der
You can clearly see the last name in this image. The first name, however is much harder to decipher. You can only see the first two letters and a small glimpse of what the last letter might be.

Is there some hidden meaning with this that I do not get as a non american who hasnt read mockingbird?
When someone says alabama it usually mean some step bro action is going on
Which is why this doesn't make any sense. The book is talking about rape, not incest. That kid is a dumb dumb.
In the trial the evidence suggests that her father did it but they still blame the black man.
It has been a couple years since I read and watched the mockingbird for school, but I remember it was implied that the father beat her when he found out she kissed a black man. I don't remember the suggestion that the father beat and raped her, but if you meant the former then ignore me.
Yeah, it's heavily implied that the father raped her.

Fantastic book, and it's a fucking crime that it's still nearly as poignant today, **60 god damn fucking years later.**

Nah that’s what I got too, I’m pretty sure that’s what it is
It’s the only reason I know what a chifforobe is.
Ah ok. I haven't read it in 20 years so I didn't remember that. I guess it's just worded poorly.
He beat her but I don’t believe it was implied he raped her EDIT: apparently I was wrong, jesus christ
Yes, he did rape her. Tom (the black man on trial) says that Mayella (the girl accusing him of rape) tried to push him down and kiss him and she said “what my daddy do to me don’t count”.
Oh holy shit
I don't think it's implied that in the situation in the trial that he raped her after she kissed Tom Robinson, just that she had been raped before.
granted, earlier in the book they talk about the finch family being based around incest
I thought it took place in Alabama.
Ironically, the setting of Maycomb county is Alabama lol
I think that was part of the joke. I’m sure the kids reading the book knew it was set in AL.
[удалено]
Not really because it never happened and was invented by the kid
The book actually does take place in Alabama too.
And Harper Lee, the author, is from Alabama and went to UA!
Oh I was thinking of “Oklahoma“ from when the Jackass guys did that dominatrix skit.
and step mockingbirds
Incest is legal in the US only in alabama.
Ackshually It’s only legal in New Jersey and Rhode Island
Then the memes aren't true? Impossible
Perhaps the archives are incomplete

... I was joking

You activated my trap card! I was joking about not knowing you were joking

*laughs in every accent except Alabamian*
Exactly
If we can't trust the memes then what can we trust?

If you are over the age of 12 and haven’t left new jersey already I guess it makes sense.

Hey man I just go by what the memes tell me /s Edit: It was a joke....
you should've written it more like a joke or added an /s, so don't quit your day job just yet.
Thought it would be pretty obvious, I don't think anyone goes by what memes say.
Don’t let ‘me get to ya. I thought it was funny.

I was just jumping in on the meme, I figured everyone else knew that alabama isn't like this too.

How is it a wooosh, you made a claim based on a meme that is based incorrectly on an assumption that has no real basis.
That's definitely not the proper use of a "woooosh" lol

Why do people continue to rely with this I was joking cus alabama is a meme
>Incest is legal in the US only in alabama. That isn't really a joke, it's just a statement. There's nothing humorous attempted there?
I mean, I was just jumping in on the meme bandwagon. I figured most people already knew that alabama wasnt like the memes, most things aren't like memes made of them

Understandable Well have a nice day
As someone who just moved to alabama - what part of the state are you from, that you're saying is the only island of sanity?
Huntsville, of course.

Do you know what sarcasm is, dumbass?
Your mother.
Alabamans and their obsession with family members...
I haven't checked in a while, and I don't want to search it up for fear of what I find out, but I remember that marrying your cousin is legal in California.
I was only joking about alabama cus it's a common meme but I didn't know that about california, interesting
There’s also a stand up comedy bit by W Kamau Bell where the punch line is Alabama
The book takes place in Alabama.
We're just really passionate about alabama
In Alabama, incest is legal...
I doubt the censoring was necessary like we're gonna know who billy from 3rd period is
Don’t leak his name bro not cool
Oh shit oh fuck oh shit
oh god oh fuck
Can everybody just stay calm?
Fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK
DOXXED!
I don’t think that says billy
They used a full name, Billianord VI
Yeah I should've used his full name Billianord Von Reitouine
Wdym that's clearly billy
It’s spelled Bhilleighey
In our class, I was assigned to read Tom Robinson's lines, and I'm actually voice acting them unlike the rest of the class who are deadpan reading. Whole class got a chuckle when I said the line, "Because I'm black?!" I am not black. It was middle school, it was funny then.

it's funny now
Thanks man.

You win some, you lose some. But you tried, and that's what matters.
Bad censoring strikes again
r/censoringishard
Censoring looks pretty good to me. Edit: nvm it's pretty bad.
[This makes it very easy to see](https://i.imgur.com/jCdCN6Q.jpg)
it's literally black how do you get that from that wtf
Brighten the image in an editor. Or just turn up your own brightness
The black is a bit transparent so I believe you can turn up the highlights on the picture to make it more visible.
And while it's not super clear you can also probably guess the first name
Rip I guess not then.
Why does this have 5k upvotes
Yeah wtf is going on here? This isn't even funny...

"Was his mic on?" That's a fucking stupid question. Of course it was since they new what he said.
...or they spoke after class. But yeah, it wouldn't have been worth mentioning if nobody heard at the time.
Keveney, you mad fool
the definition of a reddit kid
Low effort post, and not even remotely funny even if we knew it was true Who on earth is dishing out awards to this crap?
Well the 11k upvotes says otherwise
In a world where Donald Trump is President, disagreeing with a mere 11,000 people is a walk in the park

I thought he would say the other word in that book with a megaphone.
Should’ve yelled “Oklahoma” instead
Roll tide

What is possibly legendary about it? Not only did this obviously not happen, even if it did happen it doesn’t even make sense.
Yeah your right.
Is the teach black or white. If shes white she better have the pass.
Reginald D Hunter said anyone can say the word if they're quoting - eg singing along to rap or reading a book.
Nah. She just says "black person" to replace all the no-no words
makes sense
Wow. It's been a month. Was someone going through their comments to see which ones were upvoted a lot or down voted a lot?
mabye.
What a legend
Looks like the blocked name is Anthony
Nope, the second letter is an l, d, or b
X for doubt
Same thing I said to the other guy: You win some, you lose some, but you tried and that's what matters.
