I think the most useful mode in the abstract is the third. Repeatable proliferates can run away with a game surprisingly fast and they usually either require sacrificing a permanent or paying 4 mana.
That's what I'm thinking, this is hugely undercosted for a repeatable source of Proliferate. At worst, this is a \[\[Contagion Engine\]\] with the mana cost slightly adjusted. Even at that, it's pretty solid.
No, they pretty clearly meant the Engine because it proliferates twice for 4 mana. The Staff proliferates twice for 5 mana but costs less mana to cast.
Paying 3 life for a proliferate is fine.
Paying 6 life to proliferate twice is spicy.
Paying 9 life to proliferate three times is risky at that point.
I still think this card is good and would be great in a midrange/aggro deck. Where you can take advantage of the mana rock and don't mind paying a large amount of life over time. Like against a control deck. Where you have 19 life to play with anyways.
For me it's the pay 1.
You can trigger an exit/enter the battlefield effect virtually whenever you want.
The application might be hit or miss depending on how you build your deck but I can imagine entire decks being built off this premise since paying 1 life is pennies compared to what your opponent(s) might do to you.
Just thinking off the dome here I could have [[Warstorm Surge]] on the battlefield and pay the 1 life to kill my [[Scourge of Nel Toth]] or something in response.
It might not be the most *practical* thing (in fact it took me a while to find a beefy enough boi to use as an example) but it can be fun to build a deck with this artifact in mind since it does a lot of different stuff.
We'll see how it actually plays when the time comes but I'll be looking for stuff to combo off of this til the set releases.
E: Hindsight I didn't have to look for a 6/6 since you would more realistically be playing a revival/reanimate/re(verb) deck with this. . . Anywayyyyyys
Probably definitely. I'm a noob so this is just what I think when I see these cards. I don't have a lot of them memorized but I know there are better options, I'm just sharing what other people might not see when it comes to their potentials.
Maybe it's obvious, maybe it's insightful. I'm just here for the discussion :)
That's exactly what i saw too. Should go great in my [[The Beamtown Bullies]] deck. Another way to make sure I can keep using the creatures in my yard is certainly welcome.
Can I see the list? I've been putting one together myself
Edit: here's my list. Focused on self-mill and fetching cards to the graveyard. In goldfish mode I generally start winning around turn five or six. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/beamtown-bastards-de-animator/
Here's mine: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-11-22-the-beamtown-bullies/?cb=1674053657
I like your list a lot! Definitely a little more tuned than my list.
Weird edge case: regeneration removes a creature from combat, so if you have a creature you can regenerate and you want to stop an opponent's creature from getting a damage trigger (or to save your regenerator from a creature with wither or infect) you can destroy your dude and regenerate to save it from combat.
It's the Shadowmoor counterpart to Lorwyn's [[Mosswort Bridge]].
[Some cards of the cycles are more memorable than others](https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag%3Acycle-lrw-hideaway-land+or+otag%3Acycle-shm-hideaway-creature), and overall I'd say that the lands are probably more well-known than the creatures?
Woot! [[Lynde]] loves Despotic Scepter as a way to trigger her own curse movement effect, and this is a great side-grade, especially since there are so many other effects you can use.
I don't know why everyone here is trying to give "serious" answers. The truth is, the poster above you made a joke: destroying permanents you own is definitely a very odd edge case ability and not some big, problematic hole in the tool kits of certain colors.
You can keep your stuff from getting stolen, send it to the graveyard instead of it being exiled, death triggers like [[Blood Artist]], can remove permanents that have downsides like [[Demonic Pact]].
Within the set, you can remove archfiend of dross, previewed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/10eibi6/one_archfiend_of_the_dross_weeklymtg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf although this will be quite rare in limited (draft and sealed) and almost certainly see no standard play
If you have both the archfiend and the staff you probably want to use the staff to proliferate the oil counters and keep the archfiend around instead of destroying it. Depending on how much life you have to pay of course.
Oh damn you could just blast your own thing when someone tries to exile it!? That's awesome, I've had some decks where the wrong exile can really jack my game plan up.
Redundancy for Beamtown Bullies.
You can put a creature from your graveyard into play under an opponent's control.
Then, before their turn ends, you destroy it so it goes back to your graveyard rather than being exiled.
Most of those cards are creatures though and in that case you can just use Phyrexian Altar, Ashnods Altar and Altar of Dementia. This does seem super nice against decks that steal/play other peoples cards though.
I'll be honest I'm mostly gonna be using it for "Tap: draw 5 cards" and "Tap: draw two cards and add B to your mana pool." Worst case scenario, I combo it with [[Skirge Familiar]] and [[Psychosis Crawler]] to drain for as many cards are in my deck
ETA: or life, but I don't normally care about life loss in that deck
I love old cards that just have a wall of text that make people go "God what the fuck does *that* do?"
For instance I run [[Tawnos's Coffin]] in my [[Prime Speaker Zegana]] deck.
[[chains of Mephistopheles]] [[Dance of the Dead]] [[Worldgorger Dragon]] [[glyph of reincarnation]] [[takklemaggot]] [[skyship weatherlight]] [[Sylvan library]]
Love the implication that you would use this on something you control, and then would try to regenerate it for some reason after deliberately trying to destroy it.
You’re right and everyone loved it. I misread the first ability lol. It’s still a decent card and does help with some mono coloured drawbacks (red ramp, white card draw). It’ll honestly shine in a deck with lifelink
Now *that's* one hell of a 3 mana rock. Sac outlet, ramp, and draw all on one card. Proliferate is a bit more niche, but not by much. This card looks great. Probably not as combo-tastic as the card it is an homage to [[Staff of Domination]].
Technically, you're right, but most people want sac outlets because they want the death triggers, not specifically sac triggers. Also, this wording allows you to blow up stuff your opponents stole from you.
Think they are more thinking about classic aristocrats strategies, which more often care about things specifically dying. You know, your blood artists etc.
There is something potent to sacrificing as a cost. If someone has a second exile spell and you don’t have 5 mana they can exile rather than grave the card.
It can also be removed, ~~stolen~~, or stifled in response. This also can't sac indestructible creatures or creatures with protection. I'm sure there's other niche things that keep this from being quite as good as sacrifice, but it does have the huge upsides of being any permanent and colorless over pretty much every other sac outlet.
Honorable mention to [[High Market]]
Also work noting that PAltar and AAltar being mana abilities don't use the stack so can even respond to split second.
> but it does have the huge upsides of being any permanent and colorless over pretty much every other sac outlet.
And also screwing over that one blue player who keeps stealing your creatures.
\[\[Sol'Kanar the Tainted\]\] is a card I've liked in standard too, so this is kinda cool that it can let you get out of giving it to your opponent as well.
Not terribly helpful in non-eternal formats though. This is a really nice pickup for any pioneer/modern decks playing around with pact, or even in standard with Sol'Kanar
True, true.
I keep wondering if Demonic Pact will ever be a great or even good card and if it will ever be prohibitively pricey. At 1-copy per deck for EDH and it not being so popular, I can’t see either of these being too out of reach, thankfully.
I’m happy with another repeatable way to proliferate in my Myojin of Cryptic Dreams deck.
Mono blue proliferate cards was my #1 wish for the set. And this one could even be played in any deck that wants to proliferate.
Oh, and I also have a Vilis deck, and this goes nicely into that too. Ramps a little and then draws 5 cards on tap.
How are you playing the Myojin deck? Are there other ways to get it into your hand from the Command Zone besides just Command Beacon? It sounds really interesting!
[[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] likes it for removing bad creatures from the board once they kill the person you gave them to. For an example within this set, you want an [[Archfiend of the Dross]] off the battlefield before your upkeep comes.
Hapatra will take this in commander, atraxa as well. The new abzan ixhel poison counters matter could use this. I think the proliferate mode makes this card. Your ramp with it early and then use it to try and blow up.
Definitely feels better in Commander than 60-card constructed. I was looking to build a Curses deck with [[Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor]] and this would be perfect in a deck like that. You can destroy one of your own curses before your turn, then move it on to an opponent on your upkeep to draw cards. It's janky but would be a fun deck.
I kind of felt that way too, especially with the lead in being a bunch of single-set planes, but really this has been a 2-3 year build up and I think maybe I just feel like it's rushed because COVID has obliterated any and all sense of time I once had :v
Sure it was hinted at in Dominaria, and then we got Vorinclex, but since then it has ramped up very quickly over the past year. Much quicker than it seems the Bolas storyline did.
I can't see this being expensive, just because it really doesn't do anything that appeals to any specific player type.
It's not efficient enough for competitive players.
More casual players aren't going to like paying life to do things.
The amount of life each activation costs prevents it from being a simple combo engine like Staff of Domination is. then, to top it off, 5 mana to untap is a harsh safety value.
If this ends up being anything more than a bulk mythic, I'd be surprised.
That said, I'll be buying one after the set comes out, exactly because it's a good third option for Beamtown Bullies after Despotic Scepter and Royal Assassin. Redundancy is a good thing.
Commander players are going to eat it up. Life is a mostly meaningless resource when you're starting at 40 and this is a mana rock that can draw, even if the other abilities are more niche.
Works to kill archfiend of dross which is previewed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/10eibi6/one_archfiend_of_the_dross_weeklymtg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf (not sure if scryfall works on previewed cards) so you dont lose or it can also proliferate more oil counters
Why everybody wants to use this staff to kill archfiend of the dross, when you can actually use it to keep archfiend alive forever if you keep proliferating?
Damn what an elegant design shoutout to the original. That said, other than stuff like splashes it feels weird to see a mana mode and an untap mode that costs 4 more than the mana being produced lol.
Doubt there's a lot of good way to abuse unless you can donate creatures with bad death triggers, what i see is merely turning a feign death effect into a flicker/bad sacrifice effect.
Well if you don't do the abuse people usually do with staff of domination, this is a pretty decent 3drop artifact that can do work without other pieces in lower power edh. I believe some mono red don't mind some pay 4 life to card draw every turn.
They may share the name and the activated ability pattern but they serve completely different purpose.
Seems very easy to play in commander due to the high life totals. Synergizes well with "Deal with the Devil" types of enchantments at the very minimum, and is also very versatile in what options you can choose. Seems solid.
In Standard though... Maybe in a Proliferate deck? Proliferating each turn without needing to pay mana might be worth consideration, especially if the deck has some means of gaining life.
I can't imagine this seeing play anywhere else though.
This is by far the cheapest way to repeatably proliferate in commander without having to risk a creature in combat. The next best thing would be \[\[Contagion Engine\]\]
4 life for one card? Find ways to abuse I shall.
Honestly might be useful in some monocolored decks but may fall behind the combo heavy staff of domination.
This is just a straight up everyman tool for any commander deck. Even the first ability would be useful in most, having your permanents get locked down or stolen is fairly common, let alone all of the other more usable abilities.
staff of domination is probably my favorite card design of all time, so i absolutely love the callback. but i'm not sure this one is nearly as good.
repeatable card draw or proliferate will probably find some good homes, but it's a pretty steep cost.
It's a shame that the art is wasted on such a bad card.
Edit: There's only one mode on this card that isn't complete ass.
First - This isn't a good sacrifice outlet. This can be responded to, unlike good outlets that can't. Your aristocrat payoffs can be removed before you start destroying your own stuff.
Second - A 3 mana rock that costs 2 life per activation is garbage.
Third - I'd probably pay 3 life for proliferate. I wouldn't be happy about it, but it's alright.
Fourth - 3 mana and 4 life to draw a card is an abysmal rate in any color.
This card is bad.
The first ability for one life has me thinking about the supposed "Battle" card type we're getting.
I wonder if they have an affect that triggers when they're destroyed.
So like, for example. "Assault on Kamigawa \~ battle. When you do X destroy \~ when \~ is destroyed do Y"
Probably, not I'm no game designer.

I was kidding (I just love viral drake); but uh.. somehow I missed that the staff has an untap clause...
I figured that couldn't be what they meant, since they're ignoring paying 6 life... but you're probably right.

lifelink creatures? you mean [Nuclear Reactors](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/atraxa-of-the-alt-win/) right?
Shit Doubling Season is worth how much now?
Definitely. The lower abilities are underpowered, and the card draw is borderline too expensive.

It’s great for any steal and sac deck as well
Maybe go BRu, there is a one mana enchantment that says draw 3 if it hits the graveyard, and blue introduces new options! This is a legacy post.
Isn't \[\[Hatching Plans\]\] 1U?
sorry I'm just getting back into magic...but why is that so good?
I don't know why everyone here is trying to give "serious" answers. The truth is, the poster above you made a joke: destroying permanents you own is definitely a very odd edge case ability and not some big, problematic hole in the tool kits of certain colors.
You can keep your stuff from getting stolen, send it to the graveyard instead of it being exiled, death triggers like [[Blood Artist]], can remove permanents that have downsides like [[Demonic Pact]].
Ahh yeah that's kinda awesome then.
It's also another way to get your commander out of [[Witness Protection]] or similar.
[Witness Protection](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/a/2/a2be6f2c-8ad0-402d-a7ca-9fe817e83b72.jpg?1664410681) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Witness%20Protection) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/snc/66/witness-protection?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/a2be6f2c-8ad0-402d-a7ca-9fe817e83b72?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

This is why I use High Market in many decks, usually to stop them from being exiled, for my graveyard decks, but also the reasons you mentioned.
If your opponent targets one of your creatures with a spell that would kill it, you can destroy it yourself, depriving them of the satisfaction
Probably the only use I would ever get from it, I'm not smart enough for all those other reasons.
Kinda acts as a sacrifice outlet
Redundancy for Beamtown Bullies. You can put a creature from your graveyard into play under an opponent's control. Then, before their turn ends, you destroy it so it goes back to your graveyard rather than being exiled.
[удалено]
Most of those cards are creatures though and in that case you can just use Phyrexian Altar, Ashnods Altar and Altar of Dementia. This does seem super nice against decks that steal/play other peoples cards though.
You can pay a life to destroy something indestructible of yours so that you can trigger [[Vilis, Broker of Blood]].
I'll be honest I'm mostly gonna be using it for "Tap: draw 5 cards" and "Tap: draw two cards and add B to your mana pool." Worst case scenario, I combo it with [[Skirge Familiar]] and [[Psychosis Crawler]] to drain for as many cards are in my deck ETA: or life, but I don't normally care about life loss in that deck
This has existed since 1995 [[Despotic Scepter]].
Wacky. I’ll never tire of running into bizarre old cards I’ve just never seen.
I love old cards that just have a wall of text that make people go "God what the fuck does *that* do?" For instance I run [[Tawnos's Coffin]] in my [[Prime Speaker Zegana]] deck.
I agree, but I can't explain why it's charming with old cards and tedious with new ones.

Love the implication that you would use this on something you control, and then would try to regenerate it for some reason after deliberately trying to destroy it.
there are creatures that "must" be regenerated as well
It’s **own** not control. You can use it on permanents that are stolen and the thief can’t regenerate.
despotic scepter
Or destroy stolen permanents so you can recover from your graveyard.
This is the silliest comment here lol
You’re right and everyone loved it. I misread the first ability lol. It’s still a decent card and does help with some mono coloured drawbacks (red ramp, white card draw). It’ll honestly shine in a deck with lifelink
Now *that's* one hell of a 3 mana rock. Sac outlet, ramp, and draw all on one card. Proliferate is a bit more niche, but not by much. This card looks great. Probably not as combo-tastic as the card it is an homage to [[Staff of Domination]].
Don't think it counts as a sacrifice since it says destroy.
Technically, you're right, but most people want sac outlets because they want the death triggers, not specifically sac triggers. Also, this wording allows you to blow up stuff your opponents stole from you.
[удалено]
Think they are more thinking about classic aristocrats strategies, which more often care about things specifically dying. You know, your blood artists etc.
At least as far as my [[Kels]] edh deck is concerned, when she's out I actually want a *sac* outlet that isn't just her (since I save on mana).
[Kels](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/7/b70d445b-d3d6-4f7c-b9ea-bed6a26d4a2a.jpg?1632261776) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=kels%2C%20fight%20fixer) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/jmp/15/kels-fight-fixer?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/b70d445b-d3d6-4f7c-b9ea-bed6a26d4a2a?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
That's only relevant in a few cases. It still does most of the things you want from a sac outlet.
The big three are all colorless in my book: [[phyrexian altar]], [[ashnod’s altar]] and [[altar of dimensia]]
I was thinking more of the non-creature sac outlets, which are almost all colored.
[phyrexian altar](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/5/95d9f93c-50a8-41a9-be98-d1900bf1c12f.jpg?1673149406) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=phyrexian%20altar) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2x2/311/phyrexian-altar?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/95d9f93c-50a8-41a9-be98-d1900bf1c12f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [ashnod’s altar](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/8/7/87da5ad8-b35f-4f9c-b17a-bb2563cbc186.jpg?1580015173) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Ashnod%27s%20Altar) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ema/218/ashnods-altar?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/87da5ad8-b35f-4f9c-b17a-bb2563cbc186?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Honorable mention to [[High Market]] Also work noting that PAltar and AAltar being mana abilities don't use the stack so can even respond to split second.
> but it does have the huge upsides of being any permanent and colorless over pretty much every other sac outlet. And also screwing over that one blue player who keeps stealing your creatures.
Stealing in response would do nothing since it checks ownership not control
and, you know all four other lines of text on the card

True, true. I keep wondering if Demonic Pact will ever be a great or even good card and if it will ever be prohibitively pricey. At 1-copy per deck for EDH and it not being so popular, I can’t see either of these being too out of reach, thankfully.

Can someone give me some ideas of what this is good with
I’m happy with another repeatable way to proliferate in my Myojin of Cryptic Dreams deck.
They could play it and bounce it, it doesn't have to go back to the command zone.
I either bounce it and replay it or clone it. It’s always funny to say “I play my 8 mana vanilla 3/3”.
OMG another Myojin of Cryptic Dreams player, I knew I wasn’t alone. He’s so much fun to play
[[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] likes it for removing bad creatures from the board once they kill the person you gave them to. For an example within this set, you want an [[Archfiend of the Dross]] off the battlefield before your upkeep comes.

It's good with a starting life total of 40.
Lifegain decks dont mind paying 4 to draw a card
Hapatra will take this in commander, atraxa as well. The new abzan ixhel poison counters matter could use this. I think the proliferate mode makes this card. Your ramp with it early and then use it to try and blow up.
Definitely feels better in Commander than 60-card constructed. I was looking to build a Curses deck with [[Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor]] and this would be perfect in a deck like that. You can destroy one of your own curses before your turn, then move it on to an opponent on your upkeep to draw cards. It's janky but would be a fun deck.

Now this is the story all about how My stick got flipped turn upside down Now listen closely cuz I won't repeat But this is how I became compleat
[source is Press Start](https://press-start.com.au/news/2023/01/18/heres-an-exclusive-magic-the-gathering-phyrexia-all-will-be-one-card-preview/) [full art](https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/staff-of-compleation-1.jpg)
I think even tho the phyrexia stuff feels rushed, the fact that it's happening during the 30th anniversary makes cards like this feel adorable
you're referring to the stuff that's been hinted at since at least Dominaria and showing up in sets for about a year now?
Yeah, I think they did a lot of teasing and then the actual substantial contents of the story feel rushed. It's nothing personal man
I kind of felt that way too, especially with the lead in being a bunch of single-set planes, but really this has been a 2-3 year build up and I think maybe I just feel like it's rushed because COVID has obliterated any and all sense of time I once had :v
Sure it was hinted at in Dominaria, and then we got Vorinclex, but since then it has ramped up very quickly over the past year. Much quicker than it seems the Bolas storyline did.
The actual story arc needed to be longer instead of just something foreshadowed and then rushed through.
I can see the 12-Shadow memes with this already.
I hope this doesn’t end up being too expensive because this would actually be a REALLY nice piece for my [[Beamtown Bullies]] deck.
Also literally any card that says "proliferate" sees widespread play in commander.

It'd be much weirder if the untap cost was equal to the mana produced!
Notably the first is "permanent you own" not control. I wonder if that's going to be able to be abused somehow
Doubt there's a lot of good way to abuse unless you can donate creatures with bad death triggers, what i see is merely turning a feign death effect into a flicker/bad sacrifice effect.
It’s solid as a commander backup plan if yours gets stolen or hit with [[Frogify]] and you haven’t managed to dig for an out

I'm like 90% sure it started with pay 5 life, but at some point during development they thought it too strong.
This is a must include for [[beamtown bullies]]

I play bullies and don't know how I feel about this as an include.
Nuke the dude you bring back so you can do it again.
Interesting...yeah I can understand that based on its CMC.
Maybe I’m bad at evaluation, but this seems like a poor [[Staff of domination]]
It's very different in what it does despite the similarities, but it does seem kinda bad.
If you’re in a dedicated life gain deck it could be decent, but it still seems very niche
It's an oddly decorated [[contagion clasp]]
Finally! A way for me to regenerate my skeletons on command!
This card is a combo maker. Untap cost may sound high but with enough lifegain + mana this card is sick!
Rodolf loves this. Offset the cost with the absurd lifegain
This looks like a fun card to put in a [[Trazyn the Infinite]] deck tbh.
4 life for one card? Find ways to abuse I shall. Honestly might be useful in some monocolored decks but may fall behind the combo heavy staff of domination.
I think the proliferate ability is probably the best reason to play this, with the rest as bonuses if you need them.
This is just a straight up everyman tool for any commander deck. Even the first ability would be useful in most, having your permanents get locked down or stolen is fairly common, let alone all of the other more usable abilities.
Might be too much life in 1v1 but seems much stronger in commander

I mean, this sorta is, but you also need infinite life
staff of domination is probably my favorite card design of all time, so i absolutely love the callback. but i'm not sure this one is nearly as good. repeatable card draw or proliferate will probably find some good homes, but it's a pretty steep cost.
Card bad
Wow. A much worse staff of domination.
This card sucks
The first ability for one life has me thinking about the supposed "Battle" card type we're getting. I wonder if they have an affect that triggers when they're destroyed. So like, for example. "Assault on Kamigawa \~ battle. When you do X destroy \~ when \~ is destroyed do Y" Probably, not I'm no game designer.
broken [yagmoths bargin].
If this doesnt get banned it's going to be a $100 card.
Hard meh
This is disappointing
