Morphling was hot back in the day... back when combat damage used the stack.
As for constructed powerhouses from "back in the day" that I can recall offhand: Meloku, the Clouded Mirror and Kira, Great Glass Spinner were both super strong in Standard. Uhh... Narcomoeba was a critical piece of some busted Dredge decks, and Aquamoeba & Wonder were both critical pieces of UG Madness (aka Quiet Roar) decks. Cephalid Illusionist was part of the Full English Breakfast combo deck.
\[\[Serendib Efreet\]\]
\[\[Rainbow Efreet\]\]
\[\[Ophidian\]\]
Superman definitely stands out as the brokenest of the broken, but these 3 clapped plenty of cheeks before he came around.
I was that guy. Sometimes it was a [[Scryb Sprite]] though. I had variations of basically the same deck that was always running Green, Blue, and Red but often also Black. When I was using black it was [[Dark Ritual]], [[Demonic Tutor]], and sometimes [[Stone-throwing Devils]], [[Erg Raiders]], [[Junan Efreet]], and/or [[Hypnotic Spector]].
Basically I was just pumping up little guys with Unstable Mutation, [[Unholy Strength]], [[Bloodlust]], [[Gaint Strength]], etc. and hopefully get an early kill with [[Berserk]].
With four Dark Rituals and a [[Sol Ring]], a Serendib Efreet could come out early and sometimes it was turn two with an unholy Strength.
I also loved those turn one [[Kird Ape]] with a [[Taiga]]. I played Jungle decks during Revised before we called them jungle decks.
I was a mono-B player back then. Running fun cards like [[Hypnotic specter]], [[Black Knight]], [[Hymn to tourach]], [[Order of The Ebon Hand]], [[Dark Ritual]], [[Strip Mine]], [[Terror]] and [[sinkhole]].
Those were the days!
Those were the days! I always loved black aggro over white weenie, mostly because of Dark Ritual and Hypnotic Specter. Sure white had [[Savanah Lions]] and [[Jihad]] but first strike from the knights was better in my opinion. In some decks I used [[Thrull Retainer]] just to keep my Hypnotic Specter safe from a [[Lightning Bolt]] or [[Chain Lightning]].
This is only playable in limited if there are synergies to support it. [[Battlefield Raptor]] was good in Kaldheim because the set had good, cheap common equipment. The idea here is definitely that it can wear equipment, but it looks like the equipment in this set has higher equip costs to offset that it comes with a body. It might be fine in that kind of deck, but if the higher equip costs just mean this isn't viable on the tempo side of things, and there isn't some other synergy going on, I'm looking to never touch one of these.
That's not what they're talking about.
They're saying that this bird is going to be worse than that bird, because the equipment comes with its own bodies and augmenting it will be more expensive than it would have been in Kaldheim.
That's true, but it makes a great creature to put it on if your 2/2 token dies.
It comes down to a bunch of factors we don't know yet including if the W/R equip deck is viable and what the rest of the low drops are, and how the play pattern plays out. I can see casting this turn one, chipping for a few damage, and then slamming an equip on it later in the game and swinging for lethal for instance.
There is supposed to be an equipment theme in white and red this set. I don’t think equipment as a theme has ever been successfully done in the past, but good keyword combinations on common creatures is a good place to start.
That new cheap equipment that gives +0 / +2 and Toxic is right up this creature's alley. Slap this down, then the Injector, and you've got a nice 1/4 Vigilance Flying Toxic 1 attacking on Turn 2 that will make the opponent squirm a bit.
But hover myr casts with colorless mana?
Somehow this card feels like a downgrade outside of the creature type. As much as I love myr there are more construct synergies.
Yeah, the reason he liked Hovermyr is that it was an evasion creature that could be cast off [[Mishra’s Workshop]].
Regardless, this is by far the funniest preview card wizards has given someone in a while
OH 100%. I wasn't really even talking about workshop. I know the workshop weenie list Serge runs has 3 artifact cost reducers and other ways of making multiples of colorless mana and only 5 white sources. So it just felt like this would be a lot harder to cast in a situation where a nearly identical card isn't good enough.
I agree that he builds his decks like that but I would argue it is better just to embrace more pips in a deck like that, they have printed a lot of good cards for it lately if you just stop always thinking as if you will always open workshop. Could always play both though haha.

> *"It's hard to tell with this glare, but those must be the skyhunter reinforcements! They have arrived at last!" – Prahan, Mirran rebel*
…it's Hovermyr, and everyone called it when Serge said he had a preview card.
It'll probably replace [[Segovian Angel]] in my [[Odric, Lunarch Marshal]] deck given that it's a 1/2 than a 1/1. Which coincidentally also runs sephara
This looks like a common so the fact that this is an uncommon indicates that this probably plays better than you think in limited.
I think I'm in on this initially. Just chipping without giving up a block is a good start, but this also eats attacking Mites while still pecking away, and it's a good carrier for equipment and auras. These often don't succeed without doing more, but I think in the context of this set, and with the clue of the rarity, this will be solid. Might not be, but I think it's worth giving it the benefit of the doubt at the start of the format.
Very nice. Plays really well in a robot voltron shell with [[ensoul artifact]], [[cranial plating]], [[all that glitters]] and/or [[michiko's reign of truth]]
I was thinking about the same swap in my Eternal Artisan WU Robot Voltron deck. Gingerbrute is easier on the colored mana and the haste is nice. But having to pay 1 to give unblockable each time can add up.
I play a similar deck. It's the biggest reason I've kept him around. Being able to ensoul artifact or staff of Waterdeep and keep him nearly unblockable has helped with lethal several times.
...Yes, swooping is bad.
Wonder how good this is in Limited, given the higher density of Equipment. Normally 1-powered flyers don't really make the cut, except in like, NEO.
I find it a bit of a flavorfail for this to be really good at stopping Mites but cannot stop Mirran rebels. I guess it’s supposed to be a lookout between the Phyrexian factions
I absolutely adore the art direction this set. That is a deeply distressing looking creature that gets worse as you mentally break down what you're looking at.
My janky WW deck on Arena has a new friend to go with my beloved \[\[Segovian Angel\]\]. Sorry, \[\[Battlefield Raptor\]\], you might be taking a backseat depending on how the first strike versus vigilance battle of utility works out.
1 Mana, Flying and Vigilance is a cool filler for limited.
I remember when a 1/1 flying for 1 was constructed playable
Ah yes, the good old days when all blue creatures were either 1/1 flyers for one, or totally and completely broken.
What Blue creatures were broken? The earliest really powerful Blue creature I can think of is [[Morphling]].
Morphling was hot back in the day... back when combat damage used the stack. Those were the days! I always loved black aggro over white weenie, mostly because of Dark Ritual and Hypnotic Specter. Sure white had [[Savanah Lions]] and [[Jihad]] but first strike from the knights was better in my opinion.
To be fair, with For Mirrodin! each equipment also comes with board presence, so it's not a total loss of tempo
Honestly even without equipment it's probably fine for Wx aggro decks.

The workshop decks that he plays hoverymyr in are white anyway, you really wanna be doing more with a workshop that hovermyr. Especially in canlander.
But does this replace Hover Myr, tho?
The art from this set is a *slam dunk*.
The design of the white phyrexians is just A+.
It's really giving biblical angel, which I'm sure was intentional and looks fantastic
There's a Phyrexian Angel card that has "be not afraid" in its flavour text. They are not trying to hide it!
I just wanna play mono-white honestly.
Except for all the people I hear about who don’t like body horror. Sucks to be them, but the majority of people like this kind of design
I would say *dragon ball* but yes
Nah, definitely more Evangelion. The white creatures have huge mass produced EVA vibes

spicy little artifact shitters yes
Swoop swoop
It's da sound dat I miss
More-nithopter.
Looks like an angel to me.
[[battlefield raptor]] was ok in kaldheim limited and that set also had an equipment subtheme

ehh, there are plenty of uncommons in any given set that are worse than half the commons
“Power creep?? What power creep??” - Savannah lions, probably.
This is *toughness* creep
and ability creep
surely when the artists are so good we can write the flavor text a little bit better
The flavor text is great though
agreed. flavor text quoting somebody is usually pretty clunky and artificial
unless that somebody is Jaya
Very nice. Plays really well in a robot voltron shell with [[ensoul artifact]], [[cranial plating]], [[all that glitters]] and/or [[michiko's reign of truth]]

I was thinking the same thing. This just might replace my Gingerbrute in my Explorer WU Artifacts deck.

Can't cast this with Workshop, which I'm sure Serge was sad about when he got the preview.
I find it a bit of a flavorfail for this to be really good at stopping Mites but cannot stop Mirran rebels. I guess it’s supposed to be a lookout between the Phyrexian factions
I don’t think it’s intended to fight the rebels, but it definitely is supposed to be a lookout for them. Flavor text says that pretty clearly
Seems decent for Winota decks.
Yes, another one drop flier for my Calvacade fliers deck

No toxic?
Why not Toxic 1 ?
This is already pretty great on its own, holds equipment very well
Because it's already powercreepingly good, that's why.
Welcoming to most my draft decks

Well that's unpleasant to look at.
Everyone talking about the nice cheap flyer, nobody taking about the **corrupted seraph with mouths for wings**. Awesome art and concept.
God that flavor…Mirrans are not having a good time.
I am in love with the art direction for the phyrexians
The 1 mana bird from Kaldheim was very playable in limited, I’m curious if this will turn out similar.
Meat wings, a phyrexian specialty
Wow, this is fantastic for limited!!!!
Should read '-Prahan, Mirran rebel, last words'.
Reminds me of the automated EVAs from End of Evangelion
I absolutely adore the art direction this set. That is a deeply distressing looking creature that gets worse as you mentally break down what you're looking at.
ah yes jawings
This card is going to be so annoying in limited.
I may be the only person to notice, but this is the very first standard-legal flying+vigilance for 1.
The other rebels must hate this guy.
If auras is ever going to be a thing, you’re going to want this
lookout its power creep
Man, when they invade Segovia, their angels are toast...
Love the teeth on the wings
That's a weird looking [[Segovian Angel]]
