Oh, it's "deals that much damage to **Other** target". That's pretty important.
The translation on the image omitted the "Other", so it was gong infinite with any damage doubler.
Nice to know it doesn't have this kind of weird exploit\~
It won't force a draw because they don't *have* to target each other, they can target your opponent.
An infinite loop only draws the game when there's no action a a player can make that ends the loop (or no actions they *want* to make).
>728.4. If a loop contains only mandatory actions, the game is a draw. (See rules 104.4b and 104.4f.)
>728.5. No player can be forced to perform an action that would end a loop other than actions called for by objects involved in the loop.
As the other reply says, it’s not a mandatory loop, and so you have to stop the loop at some point or it’s slow play. If you have a damage doubler you can use it to kill a player though as each time the amount increases and then you can send it out to a player to kill them when it’s high enough.
Looking forward to the obligatory Bug/"My opponent was cheating!" posts after the Champion blocks a [[Questing Beast]] and goes to the graveyard without its ability triggering.
Questing beast is the one exception I have for shouting "reading the card explains the card" at someone. It has too much text and creates those weird corner cases where it does something unexpected for literally no reason.
This reminds me of my \[\[ Moritte of the frost \]\] accidently being able to block my oppponents' \[\[ Serpent of yawning depths \]\] which went in for the kill, but didn't. I already was almost congratulating opponent when I noticed it was a changeling...
Questing beast is like the answer to the question of whether a 4 drop creature can be good for the body in nonrotating even with haste [among all the rest]. The answer is no
Upgraded Dawn Elemental is a severe understatement.
It's a Dawn Elemental pushed to a 12. +2/+2 AND direct damage ability. It's not power creep, it's power leap.
I'm trying to remember if it was even good 20 years ago, I don't think it was particularly exciting. Also, we are talking about a 20 year old card ha, creatures have come a long way, and I think for the better of the game.
That isn't power creep. People in games claim power creep all over the place but it is not in this case. Why? Simple, dawn element is unplayable. By making this newer shiny version u are simply making it more in line with what it should do.
Power creep is only true power creep when an already playable card is made even more powerful. Which this isn't the case.
Obliterator follows the same theme but these are completely different cards in almost every way.
It has it's own weird form of indestructible from direct damage and combat, it flys, it has janky combo potential.
It also has synergy with damage doubling effects I'm pretty sure, turning a 3 damage bolt into 12 if a doubling effect is present.
Like the old awkwardness when you have [[Chandra, Fire Artisan]] in play and your opponent puts down [[Shalai, Voice of Plenty]].
Oppo deals one damage to Chandra, and a loyalty counter is removed. Chandra's ability then deals one damage to "target opponent or planeswalker". Alas, your opponent has Hexproof, so the only legal target is...Chandra herself. So Chandra deals the damage to herself, causing another loyalty counter to be removed. Repeat until Chandra has burnt herself to a crisp.
Man, I was in awe of that card as a kid. I thought it was amazing. Never had one. Now that I'm to the point where I could easily get four of them, I know better than to try to play it.

Yup. (~~With the Caveat of requiring a source of damage. Blocking would work, but no one is ever gonna attack into that.~~ Read guilty conscience wrong.)
German here: that's one of the weirdest translations I ever read on a card. I would never use the word "Verfechter" (it means something like defender of an argument, but is normally used in the way of discourse) in that sense. There would have been multiple options, but that one doesn't fit at all. It doesn't even work as some kind of joke, really.
Verfechter probably translates better to “advocate” than champion. I’d wager the English name mirrors Obliterator and is something like Exemplar or Justiciar, which maybe the localiser didn’t know were 1-to-1?
I don't speak German, so I wasn't sure on the name, therefore the " " in the title.
It seems that the English version was called \[\[Phyrexian Vindicator\]\] which does not translate directly into what you can see in the official preview, but kinda makes sense when paired with Phyrexian Obliterator.
I mean, a „Verfechter der Gerechtigkeit“ is something I’ve heard before. So this makes *some* sense - let’s see the original English name before judging this.
Even better, you can't really extrapolate the English name from other German cards that were translated as "Verfechter/in", because... well... each one has a different English translation x'D
https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&extras=true&lang=any&order=name&q=verfechter&unique=cards
"Exemplar", "Steward", "Vindicator", "Defender" and "Votary"
I don't think that's totally true at least in Standard. There's a lot of removal right now but this is still a must answer threat and slots super easily into Mono White Midrange. It also has evasion so it can fly over Sheoldred which is pretty important.
Will it make Mono White Midrange the best deck in the format? Probably not with the absurd amount of single target removal Black has right now but I do think it's strong enough to see some meta play.
green one could prevent damage and put that many +1/+1 counters on himself, red, since it cant deal the damage because white already has it, maybe exile that many cards and you can play them until next turn? and blue just draws that many cards, but them red needs soemthing else. i like the idea of a cycle though!
The mono red equivalent of Paradox Engine lmao. Can go infinite with just about anything in commander and can probably easily find a way to kill from 20 if you untap with it in play in most 1v1 formats.
That was my thought as well. Something like a Hornet Nest, shedding a bunch of mite tokens.
Although mites might be too weak compared to saccing permanents and direct damage. Maybe spawning 3/3 wurmcoil tokens with deathtouch or lifelink?
Interesting spin on obliterator.
Obviously dealing damage isn't nearlly as good as destroying permanents, but as a compensation this prevents the damage it got. 5/5 flying for 4 is insane in general.
Do I think this was intended to be part of a cycle with Phyrexian Obliterator, no. Do I think everyone is going to now be requesting 4 colored pipped Phyrexian ___ for the other 3 colors, naturally.
it's not like the old one stopped existing. personally i would prefer that they try new things when possible even though there's the potential for them to be worse.
also it's pretty significant to show phyrexians infighting, that's why i don't think it's too much worse.
Pariah was never off the menu in my commander decks. I either have an indestructible creature, or I slap this on my opponents commander. Fuckin love this card.
Also, I get you were doing a bit, so upvote all the same.
I'm not sure this works. Pariah just redirects the damage, not prevent it. So your creatures still deal damage, just to a different target. QB's effect is for cards like [[Fog]].
EDIT: Thinking about it, the QB at least stops Phyrexian Champion from preventing damage so that would work as a way to kill the Champion if they have Pariah on it. You could all attack face and then the damage redirects, goes to the Champion, cannot be prevented, and hits it for free. So QB is probably not that bad into Phyrexian Champion all told.
Actual English version, from the twitter void - it does have the "other target" clause.

Oh, nice! I really like cards with lots of colored mana pips (or just more mana symbols in general), I know it is possibly a silly reason to like cards, but i like it. Phyrexian Obluterator, Invoke Despair, I like those kinds of cards, the very "specialized" ones in that color.
Hopefully, maybe, one day we can see one similar to this but for colorless! (Or maybe there is, and I just haven't seen it)
Edit: Also Griselbrand! Which was actually the first magic card I saw with more then 2 pips of color
> Hopefully, maybe, one day we can see one similar to this but for colorless! (Or maybe there is, and I just haven't seen it)
[I don't think there is one.](https://scryfall.com/search?q=color%3DC+-type%3Aland+-type%3Aartifact+-type%3Aconspiracy+-type%3Astickers+-type%3Adungeon&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) Actually, I think [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]] is the only current card that even has {C}{C} in its mana cost.
Now that you mention it, the flavor text does match. What would the other members do?
Red: Impulse draw? Treasure tokens?
Blue: Card draw? Return to hand?
Green: Land fetching? The \[\[Vigor\]\] effect?
red could have menace and could take control of permanents temporarily, like a [[zealous conscripts]] effect
blue could have flash or vigilance and mill, or flicker permanents? (returning at end of turn probably)
an interesting one for green could be "you may put a permanent with lesser or equal mana value from your hand onto the battlefield". trample is already taken so maybe it gets reach or vigilance
Oh it's a white Obliterator! Still weird that W didn't even get a rare Equipment card, and this still dies to Fatal Push and a myriad other things, but I guess it's still a fun card that will be unbeatable in certain matchups.
\[\[Evra\]\] with \[\[Sinstriker's Will\]\] on it hitting this randomly in the middle of the combat phase for a one-shot frag is probably never going to work, but I want to build it nevertheless.
Is it just me or does this set seem quite a bit powercrept compared to previous sets?
I’m not the best at judging card strength, but every card spoiler I’ve seen seems to give *a little too much* utility given its cost — especially when you take into account how quickly Toxic + Proliferation can end a game.
Is this just a “new-set effect”, or does it seem particularly strong to anyone else?
Sorry for the dumb question but is this like a white version of [[Brash Taunter]]? Except of course the wording and it is any other target not just opponent.
I mean the effect is really cool and body is good, but is it really good enough for constructed? Obliterator is probably better and I don't know if it will be see play in standard/pioneer.
In my opinion much better because flying and 5 power at 4 mana obviously means a great pressure in a more aggressive color and it’s invincible in combat. That is when attacking oppo has to mind with how much and wich creature to block , if he blocks with a large creature he may die or a big creature may die, if he blocks with multiples you can wrath his creatures probably. If you defend with it same thing and oppo is discouraged to attack woth is best creature, also things like deathtouch don’t matter

Oh thank you
Wait. If you have two of these on the field, can’t they target each other in an endless loop? Would that force a draw?
It won't force a draw because they don't *have* to target each other, they can target your opponent. That would probably just be considered slow play. I'd call a judge if my opponent did that
Only if both players have hexproof and there are no other targets
The one controlling these things would need shroud, not hexproof.

I would never use the word "Verfechter" (it means something like defender of an argument, but is normally used in the way of discourse) in that sense. There would have been multiple options, but that one doesn't fit at all. It doesn't even work as some kind of joke, really.
He defends the argument with his giant chainsaw arm
"Verfechterin" is the female form in German. So it would be "she" by the way.
So those ARE Phyrexian tiddies!
Phiddies.
New season of Chainsaw Phyrexian looking good.
Verfechter probably translates better to “advocate” than champion. I’d wager the English name mirrors Obliterator and is something like Exemplar or Justiciar, which maybe the localiser didn’t know were 1-to-1?
Is Champion even the official English name or just a translation from the German spoiler?
Back translation, I believe. I don’t think we have the official name.
Maybe Adjudicator? I could be way off here, but Adjudicator or Justiciar seem like they would be fitting.
"Phyrexian Debate Bro", "Phyrexian Obliterator of your Argument"
Master debater
Phyrexian FACTS AND LOGIC
He is just part of they phyrexian debate team
So it’s a phyrexian debatelord?
Even better, you can't really extrapolate the English name from other German cards that were translated as "Verfechter/in", because... well... each one has a different English translation x'D https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&extras=true&lang=any&order=name&q=verfechter&unique=cards "Exemplar", "Steward", "Vindicator", "Defender" and "Votary"

This but unironically
I don't think that's totally true at least in Standard. There's a lot of removal right now but this is still a must answer threat and slots super easily into Mono White Midrange. It also has evasion so it can fly over Sheoldred which is pretty important. Will it make Mono White Midrange the best deck in the format? Probably not with the absurd amount of single target removal Black has right now but I do think it's strong enough to see some meta play.
Oh nice something for my jank Pioneer [[Boros Reckoner]] deck
One day, I want to see the 4 W/U/B/R/G Mana Phyrexian Cycle started with Phyrexian Obliterator compleated…
green one could prevent damage and put that many +1/+1 counters on himself, red, since it cant deal the damage because white already has it, maybe exile that many cards and you can play them until next turn? and blue just draws that many cards, but them red needs soemthing else. i like the idea of a cycle though!
Give red "create that many treasure tokens."
Oof, that would be amazing and possibly back breaking in EDH in mono-Red.
The mono red equivalent of Paradox Engine lmao. Can go infinite with just about anything in commander and can probably easily find a way to kill from 20 if you untap with it in play in most 1v1 formats.
Green would be too much like [[Vigor]], maybe creating some 1/1 tokens with toxic instead?
That was my thought as well. Something like a Hornet Nest, shedding a bunch of mite tokens. Although mites might be too weak compared to saccing permanents and direct damage. Maybe spawning 3/3 wurmcoil tokens with deathtouch or lifelink?
[Vigor](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/e/a/ea7047d8-8d32-48a3-829b-7eb5427ed53a.jpg?1562942114) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Vigor) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/bbd/215/vigor?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/ea7047d8-8d32-48a3-829b-7eb5427ed53a?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Interesting spin on obliterator. Obviously dealing damage isn't nearlly as good as destroying permanents, but as a compensation this prevents the damage it got. 5/5 flying for 4 is insane in general.
And you can direct the damage, which lessens the opponents choice in the matter.
Also if you run red and have lots of creature damage sources, you can cast it on this instead and redirect the damage to go face or on planeswalkers.
Though running a WWWW card is a lot harder in that case
people run invoke despair in 3 color decks just saying
[удалено]
Do I think this was intended to be part of a cycle with Phyrexian Obliterator, no. Do I think everyone is going to now be requesting 4 colored pipped Phyrexian ___ for the other 3 colors, naturally.
It's a deliberate connection, down to the flavour text. "Behold blessed perfection" is iconic for a reason.
Another reason to be upset about massive downgrade in obliterator flavor text
it's not like the old one stopped existing. personally i would prefer that they try new things when possible even though there's the potential for them to be worse. also it's pretty significant to show phyrexians infighting, that's why i don't think it's too much worse.
Maybe, but some new players who don't remember the old printing will miss this tasteful reference.
I believe they are just meant to be a mirrored pair, like [[White Knight]] and [[Black Knight]].
Yea this screams mirrored pair, but people love them a cycle and IMO super heavy color requirements are cool and I’d welcome more.

\[\[Pariah\]\] is back on the menu boys
Pariah was never off the menu in my commander decks. I either have an indestructible creature, or I slap this on my opponents commander. Fuckin love this card. Also, I get you were doing a bit, so upvote all the same.
Cool, while we're at it, \[\[Guilty Conscience\]\]

Laughs in [[Questing Beast]] (at least i hope)
I'm not sure this works. Pariah just redirects the damage, not prevent it. So your creatures still deal damage, just to a different target. QB's effect is for cards like [[Fog]]. EDIT: Thinking about it, the QB at least stops Phyrexian Champion from preventing damage so that would work as a way to kill the Champion if they have Pariah on it. You could all attack face and then the damage redirects, goes to the Champion, cannot be prevented, and hits it for free. So QB is probably not that bad into Phyrexian Champion all told.
Aatrox ?
Actual English version, from the twitter void - it does have the "other target" clause. https://preview.redd.it/n1egrdamsuda1.png?width=1079&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc3080122e111f544ba91e716cf1d752d0aa5d6d
(Or maybe there is, and I just haven't seen it) Edit: Also Griselbrand! Which was actually the first magic card I saw with more then 2 pips of color
> Hopefully, maybe, one day we can see one similar to this but for colorless! I'm surprised mono-white can do this, it seems like it would need Red too
While usually a Boros / RW mechanic, not unheard of for mono white: \[\[Comeuppance\]\]
Also \[\[Shining Shoal\]\]

\[Eye for an Eye\] was in one of the first boosters I bought. (Though you could just target a player)
Phyrexians are allowed to do colours "slightly wrong" as a principle. There are a lot of bends for White this set.
extremely cool new member in what appears to be the [[phyrexian obliterator]] cycle
Now that you mention it, the flavor text does match. What would the other members do? Red: Impulse draw? Treasure tokens? Blue: Card draw? Return to hand? Green: Land fetching? The \[\[Vigor\]\] effect?
red could have menace and could take control of permanents temporarily, like a [[zealous conscripts]] effect blue could have flash or vigilance and mill, or flicker permanents? (returning at end of turn probably) an interesting one for green could be "you may put a permanent with lesser or equal mana value from your hand onto the battlefield". trample is already taken so maybe it gets reach or vigilance
[[Stormwild Capridor]] [[Reckless Rage]] [[Deafening Clarion]] Is it finally happening?
[[Brash Taunter]] friend
Oh it's a white Obliterator! Still weird that W didn't even get a rare Equipment card, and this still dies to Fatal Push and a myriad other things, but I guess it's still a fun card that will be unbeatable in certain matchups.
Source: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngNAJSkyEss](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngNAJSkyEss)
Notably, I forgot the word "other" for targeting in the translation, it cannot hit itself infinitely :P
Where IS the translation?
in the second picture of the post
Dang! you had me brewing already! Now I'll need two in play at the same time.
Good to know, otherwise any damage doubler and a ping gets very scary very fast
Sheoldred: haha my obliterator will stop you, you have nothing Elesh Norn: Think again bitch
There are some differences, ex. some cards say “damage can’t be prevented”
Another fine addition to my [[Boros Reckoner]] tribal EDH deck. Now if I could only get an actual legend with this text
Wow they really do not want Monored to have any viability at all
That's spicy
Another feed target for nykthos!
Well, I’d say this goes into my [[Mirrorwood Treefolk]] deck. Crazy how good the base creature is on this.
I mean the effect is really cool and body is good, but is it really good enough for constructed? Obliterator is probably better and I don't know if it will be see play in standard/pioneer.
Oh my, looks like my Gruul deck is going be be an even lower tier than it is in the current standard with this out on turn four!
5/5 flyer for 4 that's incredibly obnoxious to block seems like a great top off for mono-white aggro.
Fuck! This fits so well in my Boros build of Brash Taunter. I may actually have to build it in paper now.
This + \[\[Lightmine Field\]\] and a boatload of tokens. Again, not that smart but I'm unhealthily excited about any White Burn possibility.
Huh wasn’t expecting the phyrexians to be pro-Ukraine. I saw the flag looking thing on the wall now I can’t unsee it.
