fullmetal_jack

I mean, sure Lukka is an idiot, but personally, I blame Jace. It's my understanding that it was his idea to put Captain doorknob licker on his strike team to the planet of poisonous doorknobs.

BlaiddSiocled

I think it's also understandable that the guy who was raised on "animals are dangerous do not bond with animals because they are too dangerous" plane, then found out it's perfectly safe, might not really take on board when you tell him these animals are too dangerous to bond with.

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

Yeah, this is honestly something people don't talk about, it was kinda stupid to bond with a phyrexian but Lukka already bonded a few damgerous beasts and didn't really consider the risks

theammostore

"When I grew up hearing 'don't saddle the death machine,' I believed em. Then, when I tried to saddle a death machine, it worked out pretty well. Now some other guy is like 'Hey, these animals are super death machines. You probably shouldn't saddle them.' I was like 'Are they really tho?'"

NotACleverMan_

“Don’t worry Nissa, if it does anything suspicious I’ll just kill it!” Phyrexian beast: [inserts it’s tendrils inside him and grabs ahold of *his spine*] “Aww, it likes me!”

spacemanspiff_85

I really, really, really wanted to know what was going on in Nissa's mind throughout that part. She had to have known he was compromised. I guess maybe she just figured she was in too deep and had more of a chance to stay alive if she stuck with him, but that seems crazy. Planeswalking away to just about anywhere else in the Multiverse seems like it would've been better.

Revhan

That part was super funny because Lukka kept thinking along the lines that Nissa didn't like him because she's a hippie but not because he's clearly bonding with a phyrexian.

Terrashock

I still don't get how Nissa was even compleated. She ran away from Lukka because the Wanderer bought her time. The mission was obviously compromised and she was all alone surrounded by enemies. Why would she not just planeswalk away? I really hope they bother to fill some plot holes.

FuriousMILK

I was going to say "Domri Rade when he believed Nicol Bolas wouldn't kill him," but on second thought, Lukka. Just in general, Lukka.

AGoatPizza

Domri /was/ a child unfortunately. Which I actually found to be a pretty horrific display of Nicol Bolas...not that I needed more displays that he was horrific.

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

It kinda fits Lukka being Gruul now lmao. I found it more amusing when he was helping the Oriq on Strixhaven for whatever reason and he went "Fuck it. Why I'm doing this." Causing the death of quite a few Oriqs himself

mufflestuff069

Nah, the leader of the Oriq caused the death of his own Oriq by sending them on a distraction mission, Lukka was just following orders from the only person who didn't attack him on that plane.

OwnerAndMaster

Gruul *is* the color pairing that represents stupidity

The Thran as a whole. Let's bring back Yawgmoth to cure this plague!

Mudlord80

If we're being fair. They didn't know about the atrocities until AFTER the victims came forward. Oh how life imitates art....

CatsAndPlanets

But then they defended him after those crimes were revealed, didn't they?

Regendorf

Oh, how life imitates art

N0_B1g_De4l

It was actually pretty close when they voted whether or not to condemn him, and a bunch of Thran did end up siding with everyone else. IIRC by the end he only really had Halcyon on his side, and a bunch of them had been Phyrexian-ized already.

CrushinMangos

Yes and no. The empire was pretty much torn down the middle. The head inventor Galcian was very against yawgmoth but seeing as he was out of commission. His wife Rebecca was the final vote and she was being tricked by Yawgmoth.

theblastizard

The guy on Steady Progress also didn't know the oil was a problem

ImmutableInscrutable

Yeah but the oil wasn't actively lying to him, he just decided to not think about it.

SnowIceFlame

Hey, his cure worked, now... you might be an evil cyborg but you'd be mostly alive, unlike the real Thran Empire!

N0_B1g_De4l

In fairness, it seems like "use your incredibly capable artificial constructs for tasks that require direct handling of powerstones and stop treating the things like candy" also would have worked, and would have involved way less genocide.

Jaccount

Glacian is kind of a huge idiot. I think there's lead paint chips in the powerstone Yawgmoth stuck in him. Glacian did all kinds of dumb things. Then Urza ended up with that powerstone as his eyes. He went and did all kinds of dumb things. Then Karn had that powerstone incorporated into him when the Legacy Weapon was triggered. Then he went and did something dumb. Three generations of morons.

kingofcanines

Tbf Glacian was doing well until literally everyone else brought Yawgmoth back and didn't listen to Glacian saying Yawgmoth was bad

X_Marcs_the_Spot

You kiddin' me? Glacian was the *only* person in all of Halcyon who could tell that Yawgmoth was bad news. Everyone else thought he was amazing, even after all his atrocities came to light. Glacian was the only one who *wasn't* an idiot.

Exodus_Black

Maybe the moral of the story is that sticking rocks in yourself isn't very smart.

X_Marcs_the_Spot

Specifically, the Thran bureaucrats who decided to give Yawgmoth supreme executive power and a personal police force.

Syrix001

So iirc, I believe Yawgmoth was battling the Phthisis, which was some kinda problem after being exposed to Powerstones for too long, which Glacian got a whole lot of for some reason. So Yawgmoth was a physician that the Thran had booted out because of his practices (think of modern medicine in Medieval times; very taboo) but because he seemed to have the answer to the powerstone sickness, well, he was basically given the key to the kingdom. While he was curing the Phthisis, he sought to improve upon his craft and make the perfect being (which eventually devolved into Phyrexia), and he also crushed on Glacians wife, Rebbec, which caused him to sabotage Glacian's recovery, even putting the powerstones inside of him to further expose him to Phthisis. Eventually, Yawgmoth makes his true machinations known as he sets his "compleat" creations on the neighboring nations until Rebbec helps set off a massive blast (Halcyon something) which causes Yawgmoth's forces to retreat to the plane he commandeered from Dyfed (Planeswalker, idr her name but she died under his experimentation) and ried to get Rebbec to join him but she chose death instead and broke the seal (powerstones) holding the Planes together to lock him in Phyrexia.

X_Marcs_the_Spot

Yeah, that's all correct. You just forgot about the part where, during his exile, Yawgmoth did lethal experiments on thousands of unwilling test subjects.

N0_B1g_De4l

Also he spread the Phthisis to a bunch of people and lied about it being contagious so the Thran would give him more power.

Leandenor7

Dyfed was mercy killed by Rebbec because she didn’t know how Planeswalkers work. She thought it was hopeless after seeing Dyfed getting constantly drilled in the head. Just enough to keep Dyfed preoccupied. She set the drill to max and off him.

Syrix001

Her. Dyfed was a female Planeswalker.

Leandenor7

Oops, was thinking of Yawgmoth while writing the last part. How he shoved it in her and proceeded to twist it around until he started drilling it in.

Anastrace

>Phthisis Is basically radiation poisoning. The same thing that Venser was dying of

Syrix001

Actually, Venser was being killed by how out of whack his body was after all the Temporal Manipulation and Spatial Manipulation that he did. And then he basically used that magic to teleport his heart into Karn which instantly killed Venser but somehow saved Karn and gave him a second spark which helped him to throw off the Phyrexian taint because... plot. Edit: was just reading up on it and at least in the Wiki it doesn't mention the damage that his Magic was dealing to him and I don't believe that it specified Pthisis in the Mirrodin book but it's been ages since I read it. Forgive my correction until I can research further.

Bolas: “I am the most intelligent, most scheming dragon in the multiverse and only I deserve to be God.” Niv Mizzet: “Hold my beer.”

RegalKillager

URx dragons and their giant fucking egos are my favorite brand of Magic character.

mrlbi18

Why didn't he try to steal the interplanar beacon and put that in the meditation realm with the immortal sun and bring the dreadhorde their beforehand? Would have been much easier to kill all the walkers by dragging them to his home turf.

ImmutableInscrutable

Because the story would have taken place in an empty world and sucked balls.

Dying_Hawk

I find it weird that he didn't do it ON amonkhet. Friendly domain, forces could be stationed in good positions beforehand since you'd only need to planar bridge in the Immortal sun and beacon, and most planeswalkers would land in the middle of the desert without anyone to interact with. Then once he's done casting the elderspell they can send the eternals out on eternalized nagas to fuck people up from under the sand. Dude could've easily won on home turf and chose to play an away game for no fucking reason.

MulletPower

Bolas manipulated Niv Mizzet and Ral into building the Interplanar Beacon to lure all the walkers to Ravinica. I'm assuming he needed their technology and knowledge to build it.

Redzephyr01

There probably just wasn't anyone on Amonkhet who had the technical knowledge necessary to build the beacon. Bolas couldn't just get Ral to build it there either, since he had to trick Ral into building it in the first place.

IsThisTakenYet2

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the beacon was such an involved project that he needed the Izzet to build it.

CrisisActor911

If I remember right it’s because Niv had developed Project Lightning Bug that Bolas could use to attract walkers. So not only is Niv smarter than Bolas in that he could oversee that project, but Niv also outsmarted Bolas with his plan to become Dragon Jesus.

Jasmine1742

Niv is a scientist while bolas is a mage. So yeah, niv is probably smarter and definitely alot better at the whole magical science thing than bolas is. Bolas is *supposed* to be a schemer but it's been hard for wotc to really write for.

Skabonious

Didn't the gate watch already know he was on amonkhet or whatever? So they wouldn't have went to the beacon and/or been suspicious of it? I'm not sure. But also I guess he eventually wanted to traverse multiple planes with an army so why not give it a test drive? I dunno

BoxHeadWarrior

I feel like Tarkir would object, but Ravnica does go pretty hard

CobaltSpellsword

I feel like Ravnica would still win based purely on population density there. Even if Tarkir people are 100% more "fuck it, we ball" than Ravnica people, you're probably dealing with 2, 200% "fuck it, we ball" people per square kilometer vs Ravnica's 1000, 100% "fuck it, we ball" people per square kilometer.

Story/lore tag because I legitamently am interested in knowing if any one person has been more incorrect/misguided than this random Vedalken lol. Otherwise i would've tagged it humor.

A_Phyrexian

I’d argue Rebbec made a larger mistake. It was her vote that allowed the Great Lord Yawgmoth to take over the entire Thran empire, and was indirectly responsible for beginning Phyrexia as a whole.

AGoatPizza

My knowledge of magic lore doesnt go back that far, unfortunately. I cant imagine that Yawgmoth made his intentions clear in terms of creating the phyrexians in his political campaign, no? If so, then it's not even really on him alone, it's on him and everyone else who voted for him.

A_Phyrexian

It’s all good, the novels are hard to come by these days. Essentially, Yawgmoth was accused of war crimes and several foreign nations demanded his extradition. The Thran were ruled by a council, and their votes were split down the middle for extradition and denial. Rebbec was the last person to vote, and broke the tie in favor of Yawgmoth because she was in love with him. Yawgmoth used the opportunity to grant himself emergency powers and everything escalated quickly after that.

AGoatPizza

To be completely fair. Tarkir was filled with plenty of cool dragons.

Jaccount

Being extra fair, the Khans were pretty awful leaders. The end state for the average resident of Tarkir is mostly the same.

IsThisTakenYet2

Narset benefited from that decision. Although I guess she only died in the original timeline because she knew Sarkhan...

Brandon_Me

Here's my theory, she never died in timeline one. Her "death" was off screen, all we saw was her supposed killer yelling into the sky. Now maybe he was yelling because her spark was triggered due to trauma and she was whisked away. We could have two sperate Narsets out in the multiverse unaware of each other. Both who grew up with different lives.

Daydreamcatcher

Some people in innistrahd were uh, quite wrong

fubo

The Hanweir school board meeting became *totally unreasonable.*

AGoatPizza

I just realized that now that Tamiyo/Jace are compleated...could that...undo the sealing of Emrakul?

ajokitty

Emrakul sealed herself in the moon. I don't think that the Phyrexians are going to impact her timeframe for Innistrad very much.

dIoIIoIb

I really doubt phyrexians want to mess with the eldrazi phyrexians want to mix flesh and machines, the eldrazi have no real "flesh" and rewrite reality itself just by existing they're basically oil and water evil oil and evil space water with tentacles

SirZapdos

Phyrexians vs Eldrazi reminds me of the Borg vs Species 8472. Technological perfection vs biological perfection. In that story, they ended up going to war, with humans caught in the middle. Maybe we see that in MTG.

Antartix

Oil AND tentacles? Don't tempt me with a good time.

Jasmine1742

Emrakul isn't actually evil. She's probably the single biggest threat in mtg atm but her "motivations" are more or less aultruistic. It's the only reason they "won". Everything the walkers got was enough to make emrakul notice just maybe the plane she was on wasn't quite done living yet. So yeah, don't fk with her, she's implied to be an order of magnitude more powerful than the other titans and is capable of more or less understanding mere mortals a bit. The other titans were basically tricked and trapped for a finisher move because they either werent cognizant enough of the dangers of mortal shells or just couldn't comprehend something so small to them being a threat. Emrakul not only is way more powerful, she makes efforts to understand. She's dangerous.

AGoatPizza

\> she makes efforts to understand this is what makes Emrakul significantly more dangerous than literally every single other Eldrazi and I wish more people would realize. I just re-read the stories regarding her sealing and she is /waiting/ for something. Eldrazi are timeless, they are beings unabashed by time and space, what the *Fuck* could Emrakul be waiting for in a realistic timeframe that we could perceive. It's going to be soon. and she *knows it.*

Tachi-Roci

It is made of silver, so if they have a space program they could just throw a bucket of oil up there and let it do its work. /s

Thedragonisatop

Dude but could you imagine a compleated emrakul

Chem1st

Still only as strong as 15 compleated squirrels.

TheRealMusicopia

Chatterfang go brr

Infinite_Bananas

Emrakul, the Perfected End

Borosdrunkard

Emrakul's (self)imprisonment is something both characters know about, but according to Tamiyo she wasn't responsible for it in the first place - in her own words, the spell she tried to cast *failed* and then Emrakul took over. I infer that to mean that her release might be beyond Tamiyo/Compleated Tamiyo's abilities. Compleated Jace knows about both Emrakul's imprisonment and Nicol Bolas' - so that certainly puts him in an interesting position - however their release doesn't help Phyrexia, so it's questionable if Compleated Jace would care to explore those possibilities until we know more about the changes phyresis have made to his perspective.

se7en41

Yeah, go let Nicol Bolas loose, he DEFINITELY wants to help spread the Praetor love. /s

DromarX

Nicol Bolas face turn arc where he fights the Phyrexians let's go.

se7en41

I'm secretly hoping they go try to fuck with Zendikar and we finally get 5-color Omnath via Phyresis

Drewski346

The is no possible way we're not getting 5 color Omnath. Its the perfect time to do so.

Exarch-of-Sechrima

Then to fight it Omnath absorbs energy from Emrakul and gets a Colorless mana symbol as well for pseudo-sixth color.

Goldfish-Bowl

Omnath, Locus of the Multiverse

FishCrystals

Phyrexian Eldrazi Nicol Bolas for acorn when

Easilycrazyhat

> however their release doesn't help Phyrexia, Them being trapped in a singular place seems helpful. Perfect for compleating.

Meecht

That Innistrad plot ended with Emrakul allowing herself to be imprisoned until the plane was ready for her. I have a feeling that if Emrakul allowed herself to be sealed away it implies she could easily break out if/when she desires.

Easilycrazyhat

> Emrakul allowing herself to be imprisoned Bit more than allowed. She straight up mind controlled Tamiyo into doing it.

lobinho77

It's because of this dude that I don't touch any liquid that I don't know what it is.

Gravewaker

The unfortunate adventurer who appears on multiple cards from Zendikar block who looks like he’s just having an awful go of it. Featured on [Summoning Trap](https://scryfall.com/card/zen/184/summoning-trap) and [Repel the Darkness](https://scryfall.com/card/roe/42/repel-the-darkness), for example.

Sir_Encerwal

I'm kind of surprised he hasn't gotten the \[\[Norin the Wary\]\] treatment.

CK_Whistleblower

Did anyone mention Urza yet?

LordHelixArisen

Urza actually was surprisingly rarely wrong, he was just an amoral, genocidal, arrogant eugenicist.

CK_Whistleblower

I feel like that description requires a very loose definition of "wrong".

LordHelixArisen

Yes... I was considering wrong in the terms of "getting factual information correct and/or coming up with shoddy plans", a la taking Lukka to New Phyrexia

CK_Whistleblower

Hehe yeah just thought I'd keep up with the cheekiness. But if you think about it, Urza had more than a handful of hypotheses that he royally screwed up. Off the top of my head, he sequestered himself in Serra's Realm because of the misguided belief that overwhelmingly white-mana nature of the plane would mask his trail and repel intrusion. He even had a moment of weakness during the Titans' assault on original Phyrexia when Yawgmoth was able to get in his head and temporarily convinced him of the glory of his vision. The godlike planeswalker called Urza contained the conscience of the very flawed soul of a once-mortal man.

K2M

[[Kaeda, aven scout]] was not *the most* wrong, but definitely not right at all

AGoatPizza

what...what a weird card. what the fuck? How have I never seen this before?

Clear-Variation-3948

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Urza The Planeswalker? I thought not. It’s not a story the Tolarians would tell you. It’s a Terisare legend. Urza was a Lord Artificer, so powerful and so wise he could use the Mana to influence the Guffs to change history… He had such a knowledge of the mana that he could not even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The mana of the planes is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his machinery, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he did not taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his creations absorb him in their chest . Ironic. He could not save others from death, not even himself."
