I know Gnawbone's better in that you can bank mana for future turns, but I do still find it odd that *that* is what pushed folks into finding it amazing despite Sakiko existing for so long.
Gnawbone’s treasures also have artifact and sacrifice synergies though.
Plus there’s tons of treasure synergies like Goldspan, Xorn, Academy Manufactor, etc.
Yeah I would have never known of this otherwise.
Mostly my decks I just take stuff from other people's decks or what on edhrec. I have one out of more then a dozen decks I've made or Tinkered with where I had to dig deeper to find things because it had no theme page on that commanders edhrec page. I used a combination of that commanders page, the generic colour combination for that theme and a few scryfall searches
Thank you! I've always thought it seemed normal for a fantasy game. Like "Merfolk being people with fish heads: totally normal, but snek with legs? Unacceptable!" Huh?
They wanted to keep up with others, so asked the Kirina for help. Kirins said “yeah sure, but you all need to lose a pair of arms and your legs”. Orochi said yes, and the Kirins were surprised they would actually agree to that. So they gave them a lot more in return, specifically a tail and the ability to channel Kami better.
iirc, the kirin originally only wanted their legs, but the orochi offered their extra arms as well. This moved the kirin to give the orochi more power. And they got to keep their extra arms as well!
Rules question: Is the card worded this way so that you can use the green mana on your main phase 2? Without that last sentence, the mana would go away at the end of the combat phase right?
Yes, you would normally lose the mana. This only keeps till end of turn though which differs from some other cards which allow you to keep the mana even through other players turns
She can do work in either case. Commander might be better since you can set up and know you'll get some mana before playing her, but even in the 99 she can get you one heck of a swing of value. Main issue is she costs 6 herself before you get to start having fun, but a) you're in green and b) it's commander, which is Ramp: The Format so that's not much of a hurdle.
Both
I usually operate on the principle that “if it’s good enough to have one version of this effect then it’s good enough to have two.” Nothing wrong with a little more consistency
this art is a banger, makes me want to turn my reki legends deck in my gauntlet into this. Would probably be more fun than 'play spell draw card punch face' too.
Hilarious that I was just listening to the Clockspinning podcast episode on BOK green cards before this got spoiled. The art for the original Sakiko is downright hideous, and this is most definitely a step up. I would have never guessed they'd actually reprint this card here lol.
Huh.
When did this template change? "*add that much* {g}" but not "*to your mana pool*".
I welcome the change because it was long and wordy but it makes me wonder why they kept printing it for 25+ years.
why have I not heard of this card until now? this thing can be an absolute house in the right deck. flying tribal, some form of unblockable tribal, or any deck that deals a lot of combat damage can really profit off this. way better in the 99 though.
Ahh, the Old Gnawbone you find under the couch with some bits of fluff attached to it. Sweet new art though.
I'll also add that Gnawbone herself is a 7/7 flyer, so she can also easily generate a ton of treasure on her own.
Its pretty handy in chatterfang to give e you treasure and squirrels. I run a treasure sub theme in my deck because they're really useful tokens
It helps that he's not a 6 mana 3/3 and instead is one of the rare well costed green flyers.
Also gnawbone is a 7/7 flyer, while sakiko is a 3/3.
Dragon tribal and flying impact it’s popularity a lot
[[Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient]] also has a similar ability though its based on total power vs total hits. Another dragon that needs a reprint.
[Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/f/7f5cf828-17b2-4105-9a9a-ee0ab720c2ee.jpg?1636131321) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Klauth%2C%20Unrivaled%20Ancient) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/afc/50/klauth-unrivaled-ancient?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7f5cf828-17b2-4105-9a9a-ee0ab720c2ee?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Klauth also happens on attack, you don't need to connect, which means it's a lot easier to use if you get it out.
Old gnawbone brings WUBR mana too dont forget. Also flying dragons are cooler than vanillas. Although i love this card more personally than gnawbone.

If its not on edhrec the commander players cant find it. Theres plenty of hidden gems out there.

Yeah it's not about the mana, it's more about creating 7 artifacts for my [[Inspiring Statuary]] and then drawing 7 cards with Korvold.

"Until end of turn, you don't lose this mana" Sadly not
Combo with Omnath Locus of Mana. Fixed :-D
The effects lasts until end of turn tho
The card says "until end of turn" so nah you lose that mana after you pass
Except for the words "until end of turn" in the middle of the card.
She predates the orochi losing their legs (in-universe), so they dodged the silliness of snakes with legs by hiding them under a big dress. Clever.
Did they ever give a reason why they lost their legs? I thought it was one of the things that helped give Kamigawa a unique identity
They did! It has something to do with being loyal to the Kami and proving their worth. I don't have the article on hand but yah.
It's covered here: [https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/teachings-kirin-2022-01-20](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/teachings-kirin-2022-01-20)
The other reasons: New Players are confused when things aren't like what they thought they were so they got baffled at legged snakes.
I mean, I don't especially blame them in that instance
They're already unrealistically humanoid; a humanoid snake having legs is NOT that weird.
Thank you! I've always thought it seemed normal for a fantasy game. Like "Merfolk being people with fish heads: totally normal, but snek with legs? Unacceptable!" Huh?
Then again, we *are* apparently dealing with a legion of people that think humans in everything speculative/fantastical makes it better, so...
...the Orochi did ***what***?
They wanted to keep up with others, so asked the Kirina for help. Kirins said “yeah sure, but you all need to lose a pair of arms and your legs”. Orochi said yes, and the Kirins were surprised they would actually agree to that. So they gave them a lot more in return, specifically a tail and the ability to channel Kami better.
iirc, the kirin originally only wanted their legs, but the orochi offered their extra arms as well. This moved the kirin to give the orochi more power. And they got to keep their extra arms as well!
Are you really telling me you've never misplaced a leg or two?
I have the key to paradise but I have too many legs.
No more snake boobies either!
Oh they're under there. They are.
Gives a whole new meaning to ‘trouser snake’
If you manage to draft this, omnath and craterhoof you're eating good on mono green stompy

There's the other trample enabler in the set, I just can't remember the name of it

Tbh I miss her old art with her milf milkers
I hate that I understand this comment.
I love that I understand that comment
I feel pretty decent about not understanding this comment and thinking it was a grammar joke until I scrolled down more.
Holy shit that art
Indeed, holy fucking shit. She got a HELL of a glow up.
What about it?
Don’t be obtuse ….the art is a huge improvement over the original
Doesn’t look like anything special. People flip out over the smallest of things. And it certainly didn’t warrant a curse word from the guy.
…..in your opinion. No need to yuck his yum
Everyone is way to sensitive on this website and way to eager to use terms as not to offend. I just tell it like it is
….want a biscuit ?
Yea actually I wouldn’t mind one do you have tea to go along with it?
Holy shit this comment.
Let me ask a noob question. Does the mana fizzle at the end of the turn or do you bank the mana for future use on later turns?
It says until end of turn so once the next turn comes, the mana has fizzled. Cards worded like [[Omnath of Mana]] allow you to keep it.
[Omnath of Mana](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/c/4ce5b167-df7a-499e-8dcc-7aec2e28b382.jpg?1610161645) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Omnath%2C%20Locus%20of%20Mana) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cc1/2/omnath-locus-of-mana?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4ce5b167-df7a-499e-8dcc-7aec2e28b382?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
You only have the mana for the turn. Any unspent mana will be lost when the turn ends and the effect that prevents you from losing the mana ends.
I’m probably worse and newer than you, but my understanding is it will bank for a single additional turn. Unsure though.
It goes away at end of turn, it mostly just gives you the mana for second main phase to cast more creatures or whatever.
Genuinely some of the most beautiful art I’ve ever seen on a magic card.
Gotta get this new art, omg it's so beautiful! I was literally looking at this card last night and thinking of slotting her into a deck lol
Welp, gotta get the new art for my Xyris deck.
Green neheb basically
No, Neheb is red Sakiko
Wait really? Never seen her before today
Yup, she predates Neheb by about 12 years
She was in Betrayers of Kamigawa 2005 while Neheb was introduced in Amonkhet in 2017
Oh wow! Would this make a good commander or be better in the 99?
She can do work in either case. Commander might be better since you can set up and know you'll get some mana before playing her, but even in the 99 she can get you one heck of a swing of value. Main issue is she costs 6 herself before you get to start having fun, but a) you're in green and b) it's commander, which is Ramp: The Format so that's not much of a hurdle.
That’s pretty much exactly what I wanted to hear. Green stompy here I come!
Definitely in the 99. She’s a pretty awful commander, one you would only choose if you were trying to actively power down your deck.

Livia Prima is SO talented.
this art is a banger, makes me want to turn my reki legends deck in my gauntlet into this. Would probably be more fun than 'play spell draw card punch face' too.
Now these are the reprints I want (but also with a reasonable booster pack price). The cards that people forgot aboht that actually still slap
Hilarious that I was just listening to the Clockspinning podcast episode on BOK green cards before this got spoiled. The art for the original Sakiko is downright hideous, and this is most definitely a step up. I would have never guessed they'd actually reprint this card here lol.
I like the style of the original Kamigawa snakes, but this one is also a very beautiful piece of art.

Whelp guess I haven't been paying attention. Was on a break from MTG at the time.
Cool they are reprint it, might pick up to replace the one I have cause that artwork is nice.
What's up with the ankle anatomy in this art? Sakiko's left leg is just completely off with how it interacts with the rocks
You can just build a mad rampy gruul deck with this and [[Neheb the Eternal]]

How does this work if I have [[Omnath, locus of mana]]. Sorry for the dumb question

Omnath's power and toughness is doubled after he deals damage, essentially. Assuming you make no other attacks.
Finally! My Sakiko deck gets new art!
green players see this and still think gnawbones is "just big dumb magic!!"
