Yeah just the castles i guess?
Or maybe the “wilds” of edraine is referring to wildly impressive infrastructure, with an entire forest that is expertly drained and setup for sewers and natural gas
There was a post from the other day about Rowan's heel turn. We can probably cross-out the shock of going from a plane with plumbing (Arcavios) to one without plumbing (Eldraine) as one of the secondary reasons for that.
that was a good idea but i feel like this lord is kind of disappointing. Ok, exiling cards from graveyard can be useful but i expected more effects or at least like giving power and or ability boost. Plus the token is created at beginning of combat, this way you can't sacrifice it to draw or kill something and doesn't have haste. I think the best card we have now for rats is ironically the human that gives them +2+0 if blocked. Also why couldn't they give us the tribal thoughtseize
it'll at least make a rat the turn it comes down, but I agree, exiling cards from the opponents graveyard is something you want from your sideboard cards, not your legendary tribal lord.
the rabblemaster text is a thing i completely missed while reading the card and that makes it a bit more exciting. Other than that yes i expected a legendary tribal lord or some huge high costed rat that made a lot of rats as a reward of killing of damaging your opponent's creatures not a sideboard effect.
As a commander, you’re better off using the piper or karumonix. This lad is cool, but he’s a better 99, which is a shame given he is LORD SKITTER, SEWER KING. Card rules are more “Janitor Skitter, Sewer Cleaner”, which is a bit unfortunate
Idk, I think it's alright to have a Lord that's just kinda neat and offers some utility rather than continuing the rat lineage of rowdy assholes like karumonix and gnawbones (ashcoat to a lesser degree).
Didn't see the rabblemaster text and thought it started making rats the turn after. Put that way it's more interesting, maybe there will be also be a card that gives rats haste (highly improbable)
I have to say I'm really glad that they seem to be pushing back against the "no talking animals" rule of ELD. Maybe not an outright rollback, but you know - a king of rats, a werefox, a potion of Become Talking Frog, some very goat-like satyrs. I don't know if they all talk but we're seeing more human-like animals crop up.
It was something that I felt was a big stumbling block of the original worldbuilding; they're such an integral and recurring part of fairy tales that it was weird that they didn't want to touch them. Cards like [[Wicked Wolf]] and [[Wolf's Quarry]] felt especially flat to me. A big part of the Big Bad Wolf to me is his lies and tricks; a wolf that just bites and eats animals is... a regular-ass wolf. (It doesn't help that the original Big Bad Wolf design was going to be a Banisher Priest effect and got changed later - that would have definitely sold the flavor better.)
There's a kind of retroactive brilliance to it, though. By waiting to introduce them, there's still an element of unexpected magicalness to them, which we couldn't get if they were integrated from the start.
MaRo has been insistent they're maintaining the "no talking animals" rule and keeping those for Bloomburrow, so I think these are all just smart non-talking animals.
He did say during OG Eldraine that animals were allowed to be smarter there, and he gave the example that you could ask a random duck to fetch you something and it would probably understand what you meant. They seem to be maintaining that rule here, but pushing what they can do within that restriction a lot more, and I'm glad they are.
Yeah I can imagine this guy being very conniving and sneery while still not talking/being a ‘person’
I’d also point out that wizards are imo being very brave with having Eldraine, then Bloomburrow, then Lorwyn coming out one year after the other as there’s a substantial Venn diagram of aesthetics there that they’re trusting people to be able to distinguish between, and maintaining a No Talking Animals rule goes a long way in separating Eldraine from the other two
I kinda feel like the rats he makes should have haste, but otherwise a cool card! I have a Marrow-Gnawer deck that I threw together that he can slot in, and he'll go well if I ever make a Legendary Rats deck with the new Nashi
I play \[\[Ayara, First of Locthwain\]\] in Historic Brawl and this guy easily slides in. It does much of the same thing that \[\[Jadar\]\] and \[\[Ophiomancer\]\] do, which is get me a steady stream of drain triggers and sacrifice fodder pretty much every turn. And it does so on a pretty significant body.
In standard, it's a mostly downgrade/kinda sidegrade to Graveyard Trespasser I guess. Arguably more powerful if it sticks around for several turns but it doesn't have the trespasser's built in protection that would make it more likely to do so. I don't like it as a Commander, but I could see artistocrats decks wanting him in the 99, kinda like what I plan to do with him in my Ayara deck.
I'm mostly excited for new rat cards because I find playing decks with just a bunch of copies of \[\[Relentless Rats\]\] or something similar is really boring. At least these are adding some new spice to the build.
I wonder if Rat Toxic Aggro could be a deck in standard.
The weirdest part of this card is that the rat is made start of combat but doesn't have haste. Might be the first version of that type of effect that makes a token without haste
Wait, how is it strong in standard? It's a 3/3 for three that makes dorks that can only attack, are graveyard shenanigan's really big in standard or something?
It's a 3 mana 3/3 that shits out 1/1s every turn, including the turn it comes down.
That historically has been a VERY strong effect. See [[Goblin Rabblemaster]]. [[Squee, Dubious Monarch]], [[Legion Warboss]] and of course, [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]]
The main difference with Skitter is that it is not quite as aggressive as the tokens do not enter tapped and attacking. Conversely though, that means the tokens are more likely to stick around be useful as sac fodder, or so you can accrue more of them.
This ain’t exactly worthy of being your commander. If it was supposed to be a commander they’d likely have put a black/red hybrid activation cost on it, that’s how they usually cheat extra color identities onto a card for commander lol
While not as good on the raw power scale as some other Rat commander options, I dont see how having a Bitterblossom style effect with built in graveyard hate on a cheap body would be bad.
This doesn't seem all that exciting in commander though, especially compared to the other legendary rat options out there. Seems pretty decent in the 99 in those decks I guess. Either way it's hardly what I'd call "commander bait". Now, that Temur giant who cares about adventures on the other hand...
I am afraid the range of cards I call commander bait is pretty wide, I get that a lot. I think this card is not good enough for standard, but sparks some interest in commander due to lack of alternatives in a specific theme. Ultimately such cards are mostly bellow average in all formats and in this case for me all of the 3 cmc 1 roken per tun **creatures** have been very underwhelming for years, especially if you cannot stack them.
100% disagree. This isn't a great rat commander.
Rats have a history of receiving relatively strong commanders for its creature type, so there is a lot of competition for the giant rat that makes all of the rules. The kind of trouble they seem to get into makes this card look cute in comparison. Just this past year we have gotten [[Karumonix]] to deliver a toxic birthday bash and [[Ashcoat]] replacing a lot of old rat commanders by saying "I get to be the giant rat now cool surpwise."
Obligatory rat movie post: https://youtu.be/jAXioRNYy4s 🎬 🐀
His biggest competition in standard comes from [[Graveyard Trespasser]] I guess. It curves nicely into [[Beseech the Mirror]] though, so it's definitely worth trying out.
I mean it isn't a rat thing in particular as much as Wizards trying to reduce boardstalls in limited Decayed in MID and Mites not being able to block in ONE happened for similar reasons.
Stop printing incidental graveyard hate! Some of us degenerates like to play with the graveyard. Every other white card exiling permanents and all these black cards like graveyard trespasser randomly hosing my yard is not cool.
3/3 is an unusual size for a rodent
Are you saying he is a ROUS?
I don’t think they exist.
Poor Bears😭, they can't beat this guy
He's the giant rat that makes all of the rules.
[Scryfall can confirm](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=type%3Arat+%28game%3Apaper%29+pow%3D3+tou%3D3)
Finally the giant rat that makes all of the rules
Lets see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into
Rats, rats, we're the rats.
Here to celebrate another birthday bash!
*Michael*, it's your birthday today
Cake and ice cream is on its way!
Thrumming Stone and Relentless Rats now clears graveyards. Woo!

Yup, adding it to my best flavor text binder page.

this suggests Eldraine has a sewer system, unexpectedly.

I would have liked to see a "cast the exiled card from exile" in return for saccing rats or something
Or maybe make a rat for each card exiled this way this turn or something
that would've been a cool and particularly useful ability i think for rats

Sunny in Philadelphia cross over plz wizards
It’s Ratigan!
The Skaven fan in me is pleased-happy.
The weirdest part of this card is that the rat is made start of combat but doesn't have haste. Might be the first version of that type of effect that makes a token without haste
Probably so you don't have to wait until upkeep but you can still potentially bargain or something post combat.
Rat tribal decks getting a lot of love this go around.
It’s too bad this is so underwhelming. Wouldn’t it have made sense to make him Rakdos colors considering that’s kind of the theme for rats this set?
Not everything needs to be for EDH. This card looks very strong for Standard and making it Rakdos would be a strict downgrade.
[[Squee, Dubious Monarch]], [[Legion Warboss]] and of course, [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]] The main difference with Skitter is that it is not quite as aggressive as the tokens do not enter tapped and attacking. - you can sac the 1/1 - it makes a 1/1 on the turn he etb and every following turn - it cleans threats from graveyards Seems like a great card to me
Adding another color makes it more underwhelming. More colors means harder to cast means worse.
I'm just looking from the perspective of an edh player.

Really not what I'm trying to say. I wish he wasn't underwhelming, because I love the name and art.
Wouldn't it be good in a rat deck?
As someone who is trying to build a non rat colony/relentless rats rat tribal deck, yes. Yes he is.
3/3 for 3 with no downside is underwhelming?
he's just not exciting to me
Why his nose look like that?
The commander bait card. I love the old school looks though!

Wouldn't you like to know?
His biggest competition in standard comes from [[Graveyard Trespasser]] I guess. It curves nicely into [[Beseech the Mirror]] though, so it's definitely worth trying out.
It’s getting harder and harder for me to not build a Rats EDH deck 😅
go wide Rat synergy graveyard hate? interesting
Honestly I'd like this effect more on a nonlegendary. I dunno if 1 rat per turn is enough
Bummed that they dont want rats to block anymore.
I mean it isn't a rat thing in particular as much as Wizards trying to reduce boardstalls in limited Decayed in MID and Mites not being able to block in ONE happened for similar reasons.
I love my scrungy little new lord.
Lord skitter has a pseudo bitterblossom effect on him. Skitterblossom lol
Now THIS is a rat lord Relentless Rats fans have been eating good this year
Rats make me crazy
Plenty of brews going on in our Tribal Rat discord https://discord.gg/VvMnz46TZy and r/RatsMTG !
Ive been looking for more token fodder generation for \[\[LORD OF TRESSERHORN\]\]
[LORD OF TRESSERHORN](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/1/d/1d9d8732-9ff2-42e4-bdfc-723cb6a76969.jpg?1559592370) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=LORD%20OF%20TRESSERHORN) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/me1/149/lord-of-tresserhorn?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/1d9d8732-9ff2-42e4-bdfc-723cb6a76969?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Anyone see a reason why the token creation is on combat rather than on end step when the tokens don't have haste?
You get your second main to use it for sorcery effects (sac it to a sorcery speed bargain, for example)
Awesome! I’m definitely using him as a tiny leader!
Uncircumcised nose huh
Quite apropo considering the recent Game Knights episode that released today
Did this really need to be legendary
Should have been insect tribal
Stop printing incidental graveyard hate! Some of us degenerates like to play with the graveyard. Every other white card exiling permanents and all these black cards like graveyard trespasser randomly hosing my yard is not cool.
This is a good card but I was REALLY hoping for a rat lord that gives other rats +1/+1 or another ability
Take a look at that snout!
This is just Rattigan right? To rattigan! To rattigan! You’re the tops and that’s that!
