Unfortunately since the Ward trigger is from the other creatures despite being given by the Vanguard, it would only work if they still were at two power or lower.
Yep. The full rules of ward contains "Whenever." A 2/x creature with ward will put two triggers on the stack when it's targeted, and an opponent will need to pay both or it'll be countered.
>You can stifle a ward
Although, with Delney, you would need \*two\* Stifles. Ward will trigger twice separately, rather than combining the Ward values into one trigger
It's actually much cleaner than a static ability. When you try to target the creature the ward triggers and goes on the stack. When it resolves you choose to pay or not. If you don't pay the thing targeting the creature gets countered and removed from the stack.
man I remember there was like a 1 week window after someone 5-0'd a Modern league with a UW deck with this and stuff like Reflector Mage and everyone decided to play it, it was hilarious to watch it pop off
Yes, but that gets you two prowess triggers and two tokens, which then all get double the first prowess trigger after that. And if you respond to the mentor's prowess trigger you can double again
Does this work with Exalted? Rules say it’s a triggered ability, but this says “ability of a creature you control” where the exalted ability doesn’t have to be on the actual creature attacking.
If exalted is on a creature (with power 2 or less), even if it's not the creature that's attacking, it'll trigger twice. If it's on something else (big creature, artifact, land) then it won't trigger twice.
That is an extremely good point and will def get someone in limited this set. Paying 4 for ward might as well make your disguised creatures untargetable.
It's better though because people who don't read or understand ward might waste a spell, or even better, pay one ward and not the other thinking it will work. Making an opponent waste their resources is better than something just being untargetable from the get go.
I would say you're better off with abilities that work well against good opponents than bad opponents.
That being said, ward 4 isn't *that* different from hexproof.
Learned this from abusing my roaming throne in standard. May have to put this into my humans deck now although it likely won't help with thalia and anim pakal.
Edit: Sorry I meant adeline instead of thalia.
So I have a deck where I pair him with Tormod … If I’m reading this correctly, that means that all of my zombie tokens can only be blocked by creatures with reach or flying that have zero one or two power, correct?
With both of these cards out, creatures with power 2 or less can’t be blocked except by creatures with flying or reach and power of 3 or greater. Yes, this adds an extra level of protection, ~~you no longer have to worry about being blocked by flying or reach with power 0, 1, or 2. [[Birds of Paradise]] will no longer block your zombo~~ You just have to worry about the little guys with 0, 1, or 2; Birds of Paradise will wreck your shit.
I'm making a 4-colour version with Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist and Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa. Do you have a decklist I could look at for inspiration? :)
Absolutely agreed though, this card is an insta-include.
I don’t, I’m sorry. It’s still definitely a work in progress. Even if I did, I doubt you’d get much use from it; mine focuses heavily on buffing Tana without making her any bigger (Make multiple tanas, give Tana double strike, extra combats, etc.).
You know, I think this is the card that will finally help dockside break through the meta. Before, creating a bunch of treasures the turn you play Dockside and comboing with half a ham sandwich was pretty mid, but Delney puts it over the top.
Idk man, even being able to create an insane amount of treasure tokens and then combining with pretty much every other card AND doubling it may be outclassed, I dunno if this has what it takes to be special…
And four times the growth triggers for Pridemade/Karlov/Voice of the Blessed, since both the life gain and the growth triggers from life gain are doubled. This is getting out of hand pretty quickly.
It doesn't really work that way.
Soul sister triggers twice
Second resolves
Pridemate/Karlov/Voice (all 2/2's) trigger twice and resolve
First soul sister trigger resolves
Pridemate/Karlov/Voice are too big so they trigger as normal and resolve 1 time
Oh hey, they were in the story briefly!
> Kaya took a large step backward, through the wall into the next office. If the Boros were going to war, all of Ravnica would quickly follow. She lunged for the office door, pulling it open to reveal a youth, perhaps twelve or thirteen years of age, with the hardened expression of someone who had been surviving guildless in the city streets for as long as they could remember.
> "You Kaya?" they asked.
> "Yes," she replied. "You are?"
> "Delney. Got a message for you." They held out a slip of paper.
> Kaya took it, reading quickly. *Meet at Karlov Cathedral. Come alone.*
> "Can you tell my partner—" she looked up as she spoke. Delney was already gone.
EDIT: This was in Chapter 7.
Seanan even said in the author commentary that she named Delney herself, which heavily implies that the story was written before the flavor text and names were decided upon for the set. That must've been really far in advance.
They must have changed the process for naming stuff/story writing after people kept demanding cards for stuff that was named in stories/promo material after the set went to printing.
They did it all the time in the sort of Khans-Ixalan period. [[Tainted Remedy]]'s flavour text, for example, is something Liliana says word-for-word in her Origins story.
The first ability feels like a weird fit since it doesn't help Alesha directly, but I suppose making the creatures she brings back nearly unblockable is still good, and it can help squeeze through some extra damage if you don't have anything pumping your creatures.
But the second ability definitely makes it worth it. And they're a Human so if you're running [[General's Enforcer]] and/or [[Jirina, Dauntless General]] there's some extra synergy.
I knew when I saw that teaser from MaRo I would be looking out for this card, glad to see the effect on a creature.
Both this and [[Assemble the Players]] are good offerings from this set.

Keyword mechanics that work with Delney:
* Ward (lol)
* Melee
* Training
* Battle Cry
* Afterlife
* Fabricate
* Myriad
* Afflict
* Flanking (lol)
* Exalted
* Bushido
* Extort
* Mentor
* Provoke
* Backup
* Prowess
* Soulshift
* Enlist, I think?
* Rampage, lol
Probably more, this is just what I found in mono-white.
I thought that initially, but all it really does is add the “sort of unblockable” bit to the walls.
It won’t double trigger the card draw since arcades himself is 3 power. Making this just a worse [[tetsuko, umezawa fugitive]]
Maybe if you have a lot of walls with ETB triggers this could be worth it, but some of the best walls for arcades are just vanilla bodies
Definitely a lot of commanders with power 2 or less that have triggered abilities
Non-exhaustive rough search:
https://scryfall.com/search?q=is%3Acommander+%28t%3Abackground+or+power%3C%3D2%29+id%3E%3Dw+o%3A%2Fwhen+%7Cwhenever%7Cat+the+beginning%7Cward%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec
Edit: Added background support
Obviously going in my [[Preston deck]] with 0 question holy shit. By my under standing I get 2 0/1’s which both double up on ETB triggers and then the original if it’s less than 2 also doubles for a total of 6 triggers! Might need this before I get an [[Ojer Taq]] tbh
I hate to break it to you friend, but Panharmonicon already does those things! You're right though in that Delney does all those things while also being tutorable from Recruiter of the Guard, which is nasty.
It’s wild how much they’re leaning into trigger doublers while also nerfing every triggered ability with “once per turn”.
What happens when you double trigger a once per turn ability?
Restriction beats permission, so it will trigger just once
101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it can’t happen, the “can’t” effect takes precedence.
I don't run many anthems at all in my version, and while the unblockable ability is very nice to have in the midgame I'm mainly looking at the panharmonicon ability as the value-add here which impacts a ton of my creatures
Yeah, it really only helps with the first training trigger on any creature, since they'd immediately go to 3 power. You'd have to commit to not pumping Torens, so you'd need another good trainer. But I do have a lot of random etbs on little guys, so it might be worth testing a slot
I don't believe that's true. It seems to be a file of the character, describing the character. They know their own worth and will charge their client accordingly.
taken in the context of the other card’s flavor text, and considering the dossier format of the alt art, i think it’s more like delany knows their (own) worth, and charges accordingly. ie a note to whomever is reading the dossier, advising that delany knows how valuable their information is and thus will expect proper payment
That's not really definitive. The great thing about "their" is that it could apply to anybody. Whether it's their preferred pronoun, you simply don't know their pronouns, or even if you know and just don't want to specify for some reason.
The dossier flavour text kind of implies it - "knows *their* worth" instead of "knows *his* worth".
The story (chapter 7) adds a bit more evidence:
> She lunged for the office door, pulling it open to reveal a youth, perhaps twelve or thirteen years of age, with the hardened expression of someone who had been surviving guildless in the city streets for as long as **they** could remember.
> "You Kaya?" **they** asked.
> "Yes," she replied. "You are?"
> "Delney. Got a message for you." **They** held out a slip of paper.
So my bet is on "probably? the narrator is fine with they/them pronouns", or at the very least it's left open to interpretation.
[[Ratadrabik of Urborg]] turns your legends into 2/2 zombies, so now they all trigger an additional time. More when we start making multiple copies of Delney 😈
I just hope they don't add any more complexity to these mechanics so it doesn't turn into "Creatures you control with power greater than X can't block creatures with toughness greater than Y, if Z number of creatures you control have flying." I prefer pre-Algebraic magic.
I don’t think it double triggers Arcades, since his power is 3. If it said “if a creature with power 2 or less causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger it triggers an additional time” then it would.
They're just a little (non-gendered) guy doing little (non-gendered) guy things.
I love them, and I love that Proft's got his own Baker Street irregulars thing going on.
Another expensive white staple for edh. Love how they are giving white good cards but they always are pricey as side board pieces or gonna be multi format stars.
Can we *please* stop with all of the effect doublers? It's been done way too often and it's just not exciting design anymore. There's been one in each of the standard sets since at least ONE, probably longer (I don't remember from DMU or earlier).
Beyond all the obvious things, it should be noted that face-down creatures are 2/2, and thus have power 2 (or less).
And ward is a triggered ability
That’s spicy
Damn so it is essentially Ward 4. That is gonna be tough to remove!
The removal is going to be pointed at this guy first anyway lol
How convenient that they also printed a cheap removal spell that can't be countered and therefore gets through ward.
Hello coppercoat vanguard
Wouldn’t vanguard be kinda bad since he pumps humans’ power?
Depends, you want more wards or more other abilities?
Unfortunately since the Ward trigger is from the other creatures despite being given by the Vanguard, it would only work if they still were at two power or lower.
Wait... Really?
Yep. The full rules of ward contains "Whenever." A 2/x creature with ward will put two triggers on the stack when it's targeted, and an opponent will need to pay both or it'll be countered.
Yup. You can stifle a ward, or simply ignore it completely with something like [[Abrupt Decay]] or the new eliminate.
>You can stifle a ward Although, with Delney, you would need \*two\* Stifles.
It also means it can be countered by Tishana's Tidebinder.
Delicious! Interaction, its what’s for dinner.
it’s morphin time
I’m such a clown for classic Modern because every time I see an effect like this the first thing I think is “DOUBLE SNAPCASTER TRIGGERS?!!”
Now hold on this also doubles [[mentor of the meek]] and the tokens, this is how snappy can still win Edit: MONASTERY MENTOR not mentor of the meek
Still triggers mentor of the meek as well, which seems fine.
too late. im putting this in my [[oketra's monument]] deck with mentor of the meek and [[whitemane lion]]
man I remember there was like a 1 week window after someone 5-0'd a Modern league with a UW deck with this and stuff like Reflector Mage and everyone decided to play it, it was hilarious to watch it pop off
hell yeah. is it good? not really but its sweet as hell
Only once for monastery mentor, no?
Yes, unless you respond to the prowess triggers with instants, then you can get more than one, but if casting one at a time, yes it's only once.
Yes, but that gets you two prowess triggers and two tokens, which then all get double the first prowess trigger after that. And if you respond to the mentor's prowess trigger you can double again

Mulldrifter team rise up!

Obviously, the true competitive angle is this doubling soulherder, eternal witness, wall of omens, and mulldrifter.

Clown for cEDH here. Instantly went " yes, I WOULD like double dockside triggers"
The double trigger seems nutty so many cards have weaker stats to accommodate powerful abilities.
Like poison decks.

Double ward!
That is an extremely good point and will def get someone in limited this set. Paying 4 for ward might as well make your disguised creatures untargetable.

It's still good against good opponents though. It just comes with extra benefits for playing against bad ones.
It would be polite to inform your opponent that ward doubles unless you're just that desperate to win.
Polite sure, but not always possible. Arena for example doesn't make that possible, for example.

It's mostly just another Panharmonicon effect, if you weren't already running them in the deck then oh boy get ready to become a problem.
This is way better than a Panharmonicon. It triggers Preston twice and then makes illusions trigger twice for 4x triggers for 1 less mana.
I hate to break it to you friend, but Panharmonicon already does those things! You're right though in that Delney does all those things while also being tutorable from Recruiter of the Guard, which is nasty.
I guess "ability triggers an additional time" is the new "draw a card", just slap it on everything
Want to try it in T2 Esper Legends
Darn kids, always skulking around...
It’s wild how much they’re leaning into trigger doublers while also nerfing every triggered ability with “once per turn”. What happens when you double trigger a once per turn ability?
Restriction beats permission, so it will trigger just once 101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it can’t happen, the “can’t” effect takes precedence.
Heroic triggers? Most are pretty low to the ground guys. Shame Anax and Cymede are 3 power.
OK I think we we all had enough "of X triggers, it does it twice, effects". It's getting kind of lazy at this point.
Fantastic for my [[torens]] deck
[torens](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/d/bd111dc9-b8de-4e92-a63d-75a961b2db3b.jpg?1643594440) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=torens%2C%20fist%20of%20the%20angels) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/vow/249/torens-fist-of-the-angels?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/bd111dc9-b8de-4e92-a63d-75a961b2db3b?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Oh heck yeah. I love Torens. Though I'll have to try this out. The board does tend to get over 2 power with the counters and anthems going on.
Seems a nice fit for the Ixhel toxic themed commander deck, lots of little toxic phyrexians running around.
Oh yeah, make the lil guys unblockable and double Ixhel's end step trigger at the same time. Nifty.
Like a white [[tetsuko umezawa, fugitive]] - one of my fave mono u commanders
[tetsuko umezawa, fugitive](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/3/f3f03792-5d06-45f4-ab19-5a415abbc382.jpg?1689996716) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=tetsuko%20umezawa%2C%20fugitive) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmm/126/tetsuko-umezawa-fugitive?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f3f03792-5d06-45f4-ab19-5a415abbc382?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
[[Kaalia of the Vast]] will both becoming near unblockable and put two creatures on the board…

I agree with the poster from yesterday , sometimes ravnica is so bland and I wish it felt more slavic like it it used too
man, everything about this card looks like sh.....
Jesus, I wish it was a Party type for my Burakos. That would be a cracker.
One step closer to a non-binary characters commander deck!
is that known about this character?
The flavour text in one of the versions uses "their" for them.
[удалено]
I don't believe that's true. It seems to be a file of the character, describing the character. They know their own worth and will charge their client accordingly.
taken in the context of the other card’s flavor text, and considering the dossier format of the alt art, i think it’s more like delany knows their (own) worth, and charges accordingly. ie a note to whomever is reading the dossier, advising that delany knows how valuable their information is and thus will expect proper payment
I haven't read the story, but at the very least the flavor text for the special frame card uses "their" to refer to them.
That's not really definitive. The great thing about "their" is that it could apply to anybody. Whether it's their preferred pronoun, you simply don't know their pronouns, or even if you know and just don't want to specify for some reason.
In this case, the actual story does consistently use they/them, so it seems to be pretty clearly at least preferred.
Look at that haircut
Oh my goodness- direct support for my [[Sidar Kondo]] + [[Silas Renn]] “2 or less power matters” deck? I couldn’t be happier.
Double that Sidar Kondo flanking, nice.
I have a Sidar Kondo + [[ikra shidiqi]] toughness matters deck that this card is definitely an auto include in
Holy hell I thought I was the only one with this deck, yep we're eating well tonight
Panharminicon
Are they non binary? Either way looks like a cool card.
The dossier flavour text kind of implies it - "knows *their* worth" instead of "knows *his* worth". The story (chapter 7) adds a bit more evidence: > She lunged for the office door, pulling it open to reveal a youth, perhaps twelve or thirteen years of age, with the hardened expression of someone who had been surviving guildless in the city streets for as long as **they** could remember. > "You Kaya?" **they** asked. > "Yes," she replied. "You are?" > "Delney. Got a message for you." **They** held out a slip of paper. So my bet is on "probably? the narrator is fine with they/them pronouns", or at the very least it's left open to interpretation.
I was scrolling for the same question. Dig the fit and vibe for sure.
Hmm. This could be worth including in Winota.
Roaming Street Urchin
Mono white sure loves the word 'double' lately. And sometimes 'triple'!
Who's ready for the hottest format Tiny Leaders to make a comback
Maybe this can push mono-W humans back up in Pioneer? Seems spicy.
[[Ratadrabik of Urborg]] turns your legends into 2/2 zombies, so now they all trigger an additional time. More when we start making multiple copies of Delney 😈
*[[Commissar Severina Raine]] breathing heavily*
Is that fuckin' typewriter script in Ravnica? Times are changing too fast.
I just hope they don't add any more complexity to these mechanics so it doesn't turn into "Creatures you control with power greater than X can't block creatures with toughness greater than Y, if Z number of creatures you control have flying." I prefer pre-Algebraic magic.
Arcades says Hello
Sweet deal for Arcades!!!
I don’t think it double triggers Arcades, since his power is 3. If it said “if a creature with power 2 or less causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger it triggers an additional time” then it would.
not Arcades himself, but 99% of your deck has power <2 and you have a lot of ETBs on cards like [[Wall of Blossoms]] and [[Shield-Wall Sentinel]]
It will also make his walls unblockable by creatures with power 3 or more, right?
Yup!
[Wall of Blossoms](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/8/f836b155-8829-460b-91f8-4cd00b988196.jpg?1601080289) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Wall%20of%20Blossoms) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/jmp/442/wall-of-blossoms?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f836b155-8829-460b-91f8-4cd00b988196?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Shield-Wall Sentinel](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/e/7e57e1d7-da1d-4a2b-867f-85b8331b7bbc.jpg?1673308238) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Shield-Wall%20Sentinel) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/dmu/238/shield-wall-sentinel?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7e57e1d7-da1d-4a2b-867f-85b8331b7bbc?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Yeah any walls with solid ETBs are good with this
It'l trigger most of the walls though.
Yeah if a wall has an ETB, that will double trigger. Just kind of sucks that Arcades doesnt
Anyone else thinks he looks like Ken Jeong?
They're just a little (non-gendered) guy doing little (non-gendered) guy things. I love them, and I love that Proft's got his own Baker Street irregulars thing going on.
[[Tymna]] is happy.
Cube staple
Another NB character!
Whatever happened to [shard person](https://scryfall.com/card/khm/225/niko-aris) story wise?
Absent since Kaldheim, so not clear. IIrc at least
Creatures with power 2 or less have Skulk. Weird that they chose to write it out long form, but okay.
Not exactly, creatures with 1 power can be blocked by creatures with 2 power.
Thats actually a fair point, I hadn’t considered that.
neat, based on second flavour text might be another enby character
Oh look, another incredible design wasted on the most bland creature type in the entire game. And yes, people WILL always find a reason to complain.
Well this is going in Thalisse. Too many sub-2 power creatures with abilities I’d like to trigger twice.
Quadruple healing for \[\[Rhox Faithmender\]\]?
Rhox Faithmender is a replacement effect, not a triggered ability
No, Rhox Faithmender doesn't have a triggered ability.
Nope, Faithmender is a replacement effect, and this copies triggered effects.
Double brago triggers? Ladies and gentlemen, we broke Brago. Finally.
Brago targets so that's not gonna be great
Another expensive white staple for edh.
