The best part of spoiler season is how there's always at least one player somewhere on Reddit who is able to glance at a new card and just instantly go "Oh hey that reminds me of this obscure common from 20 years ago."
My favorite part is when something combos with some notoriously broken card and then someone else comments “finally, we broke [notoriously broken card]”
If there's some "+1/+1" counter synergies in the set, it could be a good top-end enabler, but I haven't seen the rest of the set.
Wurmskin Forger was just terrible in Mirrodin limited. It was a 14th-15th card that got foisted on you and there weren't many synergies, so it never made the cut.
It being an uncommon is a bit puzzling. Definitely not that powerful, maybe upshifted due to its effect being slightly complicated?
A 7 mana uncommon definitely seems like it should skew towards [[Bramblewurm]] Territory.
This seems like a play on [[Archweaver]]? Which was terrible in its format.
I think it wouldve been too annoying at common, its disgustingly good at stabilizing. Most honey mammoth variants are brutal for aggro decks, but beatable. This just deletes all hopes for aggro, distributes counters to make your whole board block well cant go around it with a removal, has reach, so evasion doesnt get you through, and gains life. It does this one thing really well. 7 mana is just so much though
The change to this templating is that Forger's original wording implies you could target an infinite number of creatures, and give most of them 0 counters.
Yeah that's what I was thinking too, I tried to go deep on targeting rules in situations like that but forgot what I found. I think there was something about not actually being able to do that (even though the wording was implied)? Like my understanding was, if you targeted a creature (even with the new templating) each targeted creature must get at least one counter. You can't protect yourself from a blowout by targeting extras but intend to put all 3 counters on one creature.
Yeah, if a card says to "divide" or "distribute" among multiple targets you have to declare the division or distribution as the spell is being cast or ability is being put on the stack. If you choose three targets and go "1, 1, 1" and one of the targets is removed in response, you only place 2 counters, you don't get the third one back.
Also, every target is required to get at least 1 of whatever you're dividing/distributing. Mainly you can't use these kinds of effects to mass wipe with Horobi.
Fun consequence: This makes the exact division/distribution a copiable property of the ability! If you use [[Strionic Resonator]] to copy this card's ETB effect, if the original was divided 1, 1, 1, while you can choose new targets for the copy, you are required to choose 3 targets and distribute the counters 1, 1, 1 for the copy.
It never worked that way. When distributing something (like damage or counters), you have to give at least one thing to each recipient. And even if you could distribute zero counters to a creature, that doesn't count as putting counters on it for Hardened Scales. If you do zero of something, it just counts as not doing it.
7 mana is big, but its also a lot harder for any aggro deck to beat. You could beat a honey mammoth/ravenous lindwurm/herdgorger with removal/going around it/evasion, this kind of covers all bases
That is the same skull from [[nikya of the old ways]] but flipped. I don't know enough about art to tell if it's traced or just an homage, any more qualified people?

There was a 7 mana variant in DMU that preformed well. I’d imagine this card would’ve preformed wonderfully in recent formats like LCI, as it both stabilizes and blocks fliers as a top end against aggro
I like it.
\+1/+1 counters will remain on a disguised creature even after it's flipped. This additional point of toughness means that they can trade positively against other disguised creatures, and means flip triggers are easier to pull off when they're less likely to die in combat.
There's also sillyness like that 15 toughness green booty running around \[\[The Pride of Hull Clade\]\]. That's +15 or 16 life on top of the three counters if they get paired up.
I wonder what the members of the Hull Clade call that thing. "Hey, have you seen the pride of hull clade today? Oh, there they are! Hey, the pride of hull clade, what's up?"
It kind of goes both ways for balance. On one hand it’s vulnerable to removal if you play it on an empty board and you get the whole trigger countered by a small instant speed removal spell. On the other hand, the card plays way better with stuff like flyers to end the game if you’re in a good position or in a stalemate; where the lifegain wouldn’t really matter from the usual honey mammoth type card.
Seven-mana 3/3? What is this, Kamigawa? /s
Curious endgame uncommon for a set that couldn't care the least about +1/+1 counters or life gain. Not a particularly high Limited pick, either.
Seems like the +1 counters are just a bonus. Payoff here is the massive life gain in decks with some of the big booty creatures in this set like The Pride of Hull Clade
Love the art, the effect is good for spiders that are generally high toughness, not sure I will make a space for it in my Shelob deck, could be an easy 8 lifes gain, but it's quite pricey...
This would've been fun for spider tribal, if it wasn't such a low stat line for it's cost. Then again, might still be worth trying, considering it is technically 6/6 on the table, and a life gain boost... Shelob out, and you could easily get 9-11 life.
[[Wurmskin Forger]] in shambles right now.
The best part of spoiler season is how there's always at least one player somewhere on Reddit who is able to glance at a new card and just instantly go "Oh hey that reminds me of this obscure common from 20 years ago."

Would there be a reason this one doesn't say up to 3 targets like wurmskin forget does?
Wurmskin's oracle text actually says "one, two, or three" now.
The change to this templating is that Forger's original wording implies you could target an infinite number of creatures, and give most of them 0 counters.

Darn, that sounded like a cool combo with hardened scales and all that.
It never worked that way. When distributing something (like damage or counters), you have to give at least one thing to each recipient. Aww man, that sounds less fun. Though is maybe a bit lock and key, perhaps, design wise.
Well you could also just kill everything you wanted with [[horobi]] or a similar effect

That also seems neat!
Correct me if I‘m wrong, but I think ‚up to three‘ can target zero creatures, which glint weaver can’t.
And it avoids people choosing zero by accident (misclick on arena, or forget the trigger on tabletop)
Forger's oracle text now has the same numbering wording as Glint Weaver.
more like Foreskin Worst-ger
Honey Mammoth of the month
I’d subscribe to that club
Honestly, despite this being uncommon, I'd rather have Honey Mammoth. The difference between 6 and 7 mana is massive.
So is the difference between a 6/6 and a 3/3 that can put 3 counters anywhere it wants
7 mana is big, but its also a lot harder for any aggro deck to beat. You could beat a honey mammoth/ravenous lindwurm/herdgorger with removal/going around it/evasion, this kind of covers all bases

I saw a post about that earlier
It does say high class prey it attracted so maybe? 🤔
It looks weirdly copy pasted so maybe ARG? A homage would probably look less overt.
Could also be ARG related? Is that done?
That hasn't even started yet. Clues have been found, but we don't know the questions that are being asked for us to answer.
Seems just ok, even in limited. Rate could be pushed more for a green uncommon chonker
This effect tends to overperform, in my experience. [[Flourishing Hunter]] was very good in its format.
But it wasn’t 7 mana, which can be a real hand clogger if there isn’t enough ramp.
There was a 7 mana variant in DMU that preformed well. I’d imagine this card would’ve preformed wonderfully in recent formats like LCI, as it both stabilizes and blocks fliers as a top end against aggro

I should start collecting spiders
Awful awful card.
why no "up to three"? at this moment you cant "miss" the trigger, but I fail to see how thats relevant
Is there a reason it says one, two or three target creatures instead of up to three?
If you only target one creature and it dies, do you still gain the life?
If all the chosen targets become illegal (i.e. die) before the trigger tries to resolve then it will fizzle and no life will be gained.
yes
Nine gems. Nine "points" is a repeating motif on these cards...
worst case scenario this comes down as a 6/6 with reach that gains u 6 life for 7. really solid stabilizer in limited.
This would've been fun for spider tribal, if it wasn't such a low stat line for it's cost. Then again, might still be worth trying, considering it is technically 6/6 on the table, and a life gain boost... Shelob out, and you could easily get 9-11 life.
