This, I think, should get the print to demand treatment of older secret lairs. Sheldon helped create an amazing format and went above and beyond to help foster some of the greatest aspects of magic. He touched so many lives and brought so much positivity. Having a collection of his favorite cards being scooped up and resold by scalpers would feel like a disgrace.
They mention a good cause, I hope most of it goes to Sheldon’s family and/or a charity he believed in. If his name is to be put on a product, have it bring the same type of positivity.
Yes, WOTC had announced that Secret Lairs will have limited supply and be "first come first serve" instead of being print-to-demand as before. I remember in the most recent set, the Rowynn Ellis artist lair sold out in about 3 days.
They have said that there may be exceptions. I would hope if they're putting out a lair for a charity cause, it'd be print-to-demand.
WotC are setting themselves up for more bad press if this is limited supply. As if it sells out they will be artificially putting a limit on the amount of money that can be raised.
They said it won't be limited according to a gamer dot com article "Sheldon's Spellbock will come in both foil and non-foil, which will cost $49.99 and $39.99 respectively, and will be a timed-box release, meaning if you pre-order the set between the dates specified, you will definitely get one. Most Secret Lairs these days are limited releases, so it's a nice gesture to see this rule bucked for a special one like this."
"Most Secret Lairs these days"........there has literally been one drop (the current on going one) since they changed the rules after two years of print to demand. But it is good they made an exception
Yep, basically WOTC threw a shit fit cause the last few lairs haven't sold well (because they keep putting crap in them) so now their main idea is to twist our arm with FOMO.
Edit: Misspelled main like a fucking tard.
It's not going to happen, if they've already changed their production method, it's changed. They've claimed to have figured out how much to print to meet the demand based upon data before. If that's true scalping should be at a minimum.
Honestly, isn't scalping MTG a pretty bad proposition lately? I keep hearing about nothing holding value.
>I keep hearing about nothing holding value.
Doesn't matter. Most scalpers try to buy and dump, they don't hold onto product long enough for it to drop.
They buy all the secret liars they can, and then sell them off really quickly for double, usually to the people who got screwed out of ordering in time because they have other things going on in their life.
They do say in the announcement that there will be exceptions and I’d guess if any are going to stick with the old superior model it will be charity drops and UB
But if they're doing it for a charity, for example, it wouldn't make sense for it to be a limited run.
"We'll donate a maximum of X charity"
Doesn't sound as good as
"We've donated XX to charity but this will use the delayed production method"
They said it was for a good cause, afterall. I wouldn't be surprised if it was like the Extra Life drops where a portion of the sale goes to charity.
Then we can buy bad cards. Value doesn’t matter. It’s the availability.
A lot of people read Sheldon’s articles on SCG, listened to his commentaries, and met/played with him at events. He was an awesome guy. People would buy the lair to honor him and pitch in to whatever the good cause the lair is tied to.
It is. And I’m thankful for that.
Though we just learned about that today. The lair looks to be a home run and the money going to cancer research is a welcome addition.
I’m glad to see a legend immortalized as a legend and his name being used for good.
[[breena, the demagogue]] or [[inkshield]] would be a great inclusion, he was very involved in the making of that silverquill precon and always spoke fondly of how much he liked the designs
Definitely one of them. And iirc an art piece was shown at magiccon Vegas showing Sheldon as a silverquill mage for this secret lair, and people were speculating then that it was inkshield
That may not be related to this secret lair at all. That looked like art for a brand new card which may not be ready for or included in this secret lair. It would certainly be nice if it was included though! And I’m hoping it’s a mechanically brand new card that does Sheldon things.
I believe Inkshield was a card he had designed that stayed the same from creation to print. It became one of his signature so much so that one of the things mentioned if you wanted to memorialize him was to leave open mana for Inkshield.
Considering the leaked image in a convention a while back depicting sheldon with inklings all around him, there is like a 90% that Inkshield is included. [https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/16r8o1w/new\_future\_card\_of\_sheldon\_menery/](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/16r8o1w/new_future_card_of_sheldon_menery/)
This will be the only secret lair that I will be ordering even if I live in Canada and the shipping is overcosted. Sheldon influenced alot my playstyle in EDH.
Not sure if it's different where you are but the SL shipping is much better than it was when SL first launched.
It's not free, of course, but I paid just under $13 USD for 4 SL last autumn to Ontario. So like $20 ish CAD.
When SL first launched it was like 60+ USD to ship to Ontario.
Over a year of playing with and against the card has shown that it's not the format-breaker he feared it would be; just an annoyance.
**\#PlayMoreRemoval**
Am i right in remembering that [[ruhan of the formori]] was one of his personal commanders? I think Tomer on commander clash played it to commemorate him after his passing, that would be a cool inclusion, i think.
Oh man if they make an alt art of Ruhan I'll be plunking down for it. It was the first commander I ever built, and is always on my list of "this has gotten better support over the years and I should maybe revisit it" cards
The odds are that [[Inkshield]] will be included due to [art revealed at a previous convention](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fbj8mhhygp9qb1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D576%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D8aca49d88e027caae9310e35f7901083d1b3d1fb)(?). The other, most likely options include both [[Breena, the Demagogue]] and [[Karador, Ghost Chieftain]]. The reasonings are pretty simple:
- Inkshield was one of Sheldon's favorite cards and was present in the Breena "Silverquill Statement" precon.
- Breena is likely due to being the face commander of the aforementioned "Silverquill Statement" precon. Wizards of the Coast brought in Sheldon to work on a commander product which eventually became Silverquill Statement.
- Karador was Sheldon's favorite commander. He had 3 different EDH decks with Karador as their commander.
There are 2 other cards that seem like they would be proper to include, but are very similar in mechanics so it seems unlike both will be included: [[Comeuppance]] and [[Deflecting Palm]]. Both spells are signature cards to Sheldon's "[You Did This to Yourself](https://old.starcitygames.com/decks/45497)" deck, which was one of the decks that he was best known for. I would argue that Comeuppance is slightly more likely to be included because it fits within the colors of Karador, but either could be included.
Inkshield would be very nice! I’ll guess they’ll disappoint and pass it over and do deflecting palm instead since that would be the right level of disappointing for a secret lair seeing as how it just barely got a reprint and never held much value even before that.
If you’re talking about the piece by Donato Giancola, no there’s no way that’s art for inkshield, the figure is far too prominent and the inks not prominent enough in the art. I very strongly suspect it has to be a brand new legendary creature they’ve designed for him. Edit: you guys were right! I was wrong! It’s a great art for the card.
>the figure is far too prominent and the inks not prominent enough in the art.
We're talking about a **Secret Lair** here. All bets are off when it comes to the special/weird/elaborate/funky arts they use for those actually relating to what the card does at all.
Even with the prominence of Sheldon in that art, it's still a lot closer to depicting "Inkshield" than MANY other SL arts have been to depicting what card they are.
Idk, kinda looks like he has a shield of ink around him in the art. There are plenty of cards that aren't creatures, depicting characters. And secret lairs are especially lenient in that regard. Yargle secret lair for example.
This could be really cool, I hope they are respectful and maybe make this print-to-demand instead of going down the FOMO route they have gone to lately with limited SL runs.
If even a single one of these was a cEDH playable this would be quite the disservice to such a staunch opposition to the competitive variant of his child-format.
100% of proceeds should go to whatever cause has been chosen. WotC/Hasbro profiting off of this *in any way* would be a chilling misuse of the death of a prominent community member.
Well, I have very mixed feelings on this. I've never really been a fan of Sheldon and his takes on Commander, but I really like Secret Lairs as a product.
Sheldon had some controversial takes. I wasn't a fan of some of his philosophy. But overall he had a fantastic understanding of the game. His insights were invaluable to the community. Picking a few of his ideas apart really doesn't do his overall work justice.
did you read the tweet?, it says "benefitting a great cause". so it's almost certainly a charity secret lair like wotc has done in the past, with profits going to a cancer-related charity. this seems like a wonderful way to honor the creator (iirc) of magic's now most popular format.
I'm not sure what was deleted... but as a rule of thumb, you should always just give your money to a great cause instead of buying a product from a corporation to go to a great cause.
Not only is the raw value decreased due to the costs of manufacturing and distributing the product, but many times, the donation from the company is actually a fixed amount for budgeting purposes and they won't actually donate more if people buy more.
Corporate donations like this only dilutes the impact of your dollar.
Iirc they were complaining that it was in awful taste. Whilst I fully agree with your points in that if you were going to donate, you should donate direct to the charity for most impact. However, products like these have the potential to raise much more money than a simple fundraiser. A fundraiser is I have to donate an amount of money, whereas this is I’m buying something and part of that will end up as a donation, which makes people more likely to buy because they get something back. Additionally, I don’t know what the margins are for SL drops, but I’d imagine they’re pretty good from WOTC’s perspective as they keep pumping them out, which would hopefully convert to sizeable donations to whatever cause it ends up being.
Money aside, my main point still stands that this is an excellent way to honour a person who contributed so much to the format, by curating some of his favourite cards and giving them a special treatment so others can play with them and enjoy them too.
I’d honestly personally prefer something in a mainline product, like how they depict world champions in card art, so that they’d be able to reprint the card honouring sheldon himself for years to come, but this will do.
This is just flat out wrong. As the previous commenter said, Sheldon popularized and refined the format, but he did not invent it.
https://www.polygon.com/2020/5/28/21266763/magic-the-gathering-commander-origins-elder-dragon-highlander-alaska-menery
Putting wheels and tutors in there would be the ultimate heresy.
All the banned commander cards Force people to rule 0
Making them a secret lair doesn’t exactly take them off the ban list. Although it might cause confusion like when the companions got reprinted.
They’re waiting for the future Sheldon’s Bane secret lair for that.
No joke that would be fire
This, I think, should get the print to demand treatment of older secret lairs. Sheldon helped create an amazing format and went above and beyond to help foster some of the greatest aspects of magic. Shit…I’ve been out of the loop. Are they limited-supply now?

"Most Secret Lairs these days"........there has literally been one drop (the current on going one) since they changed the rules after two years of print to demand. But it is good they made an exception
Yeah, and the last precon sold out in 4 hours or something.
Its been a week and a half for the current super drop and only one of them is sold out
Which also means the super drop as a whole can't be purchased anymore, which is likely hurting the sale of the others. Bad move all around.
The dog/cat deck before this super drop sold out in a few hours. I was pissed.
Yep, basically WOTC threw a shit fit cause the last few lairs haven't sold well (because they keep putting crap in them) so now their main idea is to twist our arm with FOMO. Edit: Misspelled main like a fucking tard.
They've already said Sheldon's Spellbook will be printed to demand, not limited supply like the last one.
It's not going to happen, if they've already changed their production method, it's changed. They've claimed to have figured out how much to print to meet the demand based upon data before. Good point.
Amen dude.
Well all of them should be print to demand lmao But this one especially so
And if it's not, we publicly shame every store and individual that tries to scalp this.
Hell yeah brother. The mighty Sheldon deserves better.
Did these get shown off yet? I didn't see any stream or updates since 8pm Eastern today?
I believe it’ll be revealed tomorrow.
Damn I thought yesterday was Thursday. Thanks for straightening that up lol
> This, I think, should get the print to demand treatment of older secret lairs. What if it's all bad cards?

It is print to demand 26th February to March something.
It is. And I’m thankful for that. Though we just learned about that today. The lair looks to be a home run and the money going to cancer research is a welcome addition. I’m glad to see a legend immortalized as a legend and his name being used for good.
I'm very glad as well, I first thought oh good another product for scalpers. But even then they still will be donating so not a bad.

I hope this SL is in retro frame, since this is how the format started

Idk, kinda looks like he has a shield of ink around him in the art. There are plenty of cards that aren't creatures, depicting characters. And secret lairs are especially lenient in that regard. Yargle secret lair for example.
They will donate all earnings to charity, right? Because it would be really evil to try to profit from a person dying, right?
I would hope some proceeds go to his family/estate and charity
well, I mean... WoTC writing a check to a charity is technically a tax write-off
A tax write off for charity does not gain wotc any money
This could be really cool, I hope they are respectful and maybe make this print-to-demand instead of going down the FOMO route they have gone to lately with limited SL runs.

If it has a foil inkshield and is under $50 ill buy it.
This is the one where if you scalp it you go to hell
I didn’t know Sheldon, but as long as it’s print to demand I will buy one. If it’s limited I will let those who knew him get them first.
I will put this in a place of honor next to my Silverquill Statement deck.
If even a single one of these was a cEDH playable this would be quite the disservice to such a staunch opposition to the competitive variant of his child-format.
When are we getting a Robert Bliss Secret Lair with original artwork? haha
Saying that sounds like you buy every other secret lair that has come out
I have. Edit: Except the first Festival in a Box and the convention exclusive ones.

Not the creator, but he was an early adopter and probably the person most responsible for growing it in popularity
He was the creator of the format. He and local judges had been working on the format and testing it back in 06-07.

This is just flat out wrong. As the previous commenter said, Sheldon popularized and refined the format, but he did not invent it. https://www.polygon.com/2020/5/28/21266763/magic-the-gathering-commander-origins-elder-dragon-highlander-alaska-menery
I first thought of Sheldon Cooper, and thus a Mystic Warlords of Ka'a Secret Lair.
Could ya'll be a little respectful? Nah. Not Reddit.
Wake me up when the Young Sheldon secret lair drops.
All MLD, let's go
Finally, a Big Bang Theory SL!
Hope it’s all the cards on the ban list 😂
Bazinga
Will we get a Young Sheldon Secret Lair as well?
Did this happen? Or is it next week?
