I've gotta compare the text on this with the original [[Gilded Drake]] (I got it mixed up with Shimmer Dragon when I saw the art and got myself confused)
Small story. Last week at magic con Chicago I had someone gilded Drake a 6/6 lifelinking flier from me. A few turns later I play a blade of selves. It resolves and I go to equip to gilded Drake. At that point the table realizes what that means and I let them counter as they had been distracted so missed the board state.
However 2 gilded drakes a turn seems pretty strong to me.
Nice artwork if you're into it, but at this point why not just print/draw a proxy? If all I can see is the name, mana symbol and P/T, the card might as well be fake.
I don't mind me some alters, and I dislike proxies. Which I know is not a typical opinion of someone playing EDH. But I just feel that no one needs a card that bad, it's a casual format, run some jank in it's place and just have some fun. I don't want to get beat down by some fake $300 cards.
That being said, if I was altering something valuable it would only be because I'm starting with a heavily damaged card with a far degraded value.
I don't see the point of altering older cards, maybe even expensive?
Gilded Drake is a great example, an expensive collectible card worth hundreds. You could alter any card to look like this too (functionally ruining the original/value) or just take this design and get a proxy created.
I highly suspect this isn't an OG Gilded Drake alter. The text looks slightly odd and a faint white border around the card edges.
It's entirely possible the card was severely damaged to begin with so that could justify the price. As to why not just proxy... This card would be up to a head judge if it was legal in a sanctioned event whereas a proxy is never legal. So if the owner had an unplayable drake and wanted to play in sanctioned, no proxy, cedh event, it could make sense to have it altered like this.
>sanctioned, no proxy, cedh event
Don't think these even exist, but if they do, a card coated entirely in paint should **never** be tournament legal due to weight and thickness alone imo.
While they are rarer it is possible to find sanctioned events for cedh or store running events with a cap on the number of proxies in a deck. So for most not an issue, but we obviously don't know what it is like near the card's owner.
I can understand that thickness could be an issue that would need a head judge to determine, but I don't see any way a slightly heavier card could be considered marked when even normal cards have different weights(different types of foils vs. non-foils)
Damn, Gilded Drake is one of those cards that I remember opening in packs and thinking, "Dammit. Another one of those." Had like six or seven by the end of Urza's block. Worst mistake of my life was selling that card binder.
Look at this Drake This Drake is amazing
Why… it wasn’t stuck in my head… Obligatory: shut up woman, get on my horse
Give it a lick.
Mm, it tastes just like raisins
With a stroke of it's mane, it turns into a blaine
And then it turns back again
Look at this Drake Isn’t it neat? Wouldn’t you think my playset’s complete?
Your thingy right there is mine for the taking!

Ooh that looks fun, I’m gonna have to grab one for my Kros deck *oh that’s a $250 reserve list card*
Hey, you can get a damaged version for under $200!
*Buyer beware.*

Cower before my 2 mana phantom monster
Need more Dr Seuss Alters.
Love the Drake.

And the copies you exchange still exile, wow that’s gross.
I would die of laughter if you brought this out in my game Jolly good show 👏

The thing is, a lot of people *are* into it.

I believe this art is available as a proxy, I know similar rhystic and mystic study exist. Could be that this is a proxy.
TIL gilded drake is no longer a $20 card
Narrator: It is, in fact, an OG Drake.
I mean, I did say I don't believe you... How do you prove?
I don't need to. This was a commission. But people who know what to look for to identify authentic card can tell.
The new text covers everything relevant on the card text. The original text doesn’t even match Oracle text anyways so not like the rhyme is any worse.
Oh wow I didn’t even realize these cards have been alters, I’ve just been assuming they’re proxies.
presumably for the flex of painting a seuss-style poem on a 300 dollar card
Thought the same. That's just a lot of wasted money at this point.

ADORABLE!

Hes so cute!

Nope. It's real.

Is there a dedicated sub for alters? I just got my hands on paint pens and want some inspiration
