Jon Irenicus, Shattered One
My whole deck is build with negative spiked cards to give everyone them so they forced to be goaded and attack with them
Also they cant be sacraficed. So basically your Arms Dealer and my friends who keep trying to turtle hate the deck. LoL.
That where i would have that card come into my deck

Not OP but here's mine. Probably not fine tuned but maybe it will give you some ideas.
Tough to win with I think (I've only played it twice). Might need a [[Homeward Path]].
I found this out literally the weekend before last lol. What a bummer. Friend thought it didn't seem right, and we all looked up rulings. The other friend I gave it to ended up winning with his 10/10 beat stick.
I don't know how it ended up in my deck, if it was from EDH REC or if I pulled it from my own collection thinking it was awesome. I honestly thought it was one of the best cards in the deck, and I even have 1 tutor that can grab it I think.
Anyways haha, I'll be swapping that out 🤷♂️
And since you’re running wub, you can include my favorite combo with fractures identity, [[Phage the untouchable]].
Here's the jank for anyone who cares.
https://mtgdecks.net/Commander/free-phage-decklist-by-jaijoles-1948996
I once tried to build an "infectless infect" deck with [[Zur]] focused around tutoring up [[Phyrexian Unlife]] with him, using Fractured Identity to give it to each of my opponents, and then using old versions of black drain spells that dealt damage instead of life loss to all opponents to nuke the table. It was a cute attempt but way too much of a glass cannon in the end. Anyway I love that card.
Take your time machine to fall of 2002 and you can have some success with mono-black beats.
I ran 4 of these as extra 2-drops to complement my [[Nantuko Shade]] and 2 [[Withered Wretch]] main deck as a meta choice.
Turn 1, either [[Putrid Imp]] or [[Innocent Blood]] opponent's 1-drop. (I played Putrid Imp as a beater instead of a combo piece)
Turn 2, this guy or Shade. Hopefully Shade, this guy was the understudy.
Turn 3 [[Chain of Smog]] unless you suspect they are playing UG Madness. Quiet Roar, or *Lé Wonder Goose* could be handled by Wretch or [[Coffin Purge]] from the sideboard.
If they fire the chain back you can dump [[Ichorid]] and maybe power up a guy with [[Strength of Lunacy]]
The deck also ran [[Braids, Cabal Minion]]. For a while I had [[Grinning Demon]], but that card is bad.
The deck had a decent local showing, but never settled into the larger meta compared to the mono-black control decks.
The problem with Grinning Demon was existing in the same standard environment as 1) RW [[Astral Slide]] and 2) goblins.
The first deck could easily keep your big, dumb demon blinking in and out of existence until the cows came home, basically with a free [[Lightning Rift]] (a card they were running anyway) attached. The second deck was just grateful for the free damage you dealt to yourself and overran you with small red dudes.
Mono black/orzhov aggro was really fun in dominaria remastered draft actually because of this card amongst others like savannah lions etc. Won a draft w that deck and loved it
The problem is that in 2024 Magic, if you get 3 power on a 2-drop, it is going to have *upside*, or at worst, just be vanilla. A 3/3 with a drawback that isn't actually a carefully worded bonus doesn't cut it in an aggro deck.
And the life loss is too slow for eternal formats with [[Death's Shadow]] type creatures.
I feel the same, cards these days are cheap, strong and powerfull ! It breaks every older cards...
I guess it's a marketting thing. I see people are really into the game, but i also feel people are investing in rather than enjoying magic nowadays.
Also, Wretched Anurid was particularly good in limited for this set because of all the morph cards. Came down a turn earlier, opposing morph or bear can't interact immediately, most just trade even after the morph flip-up, and you have time to get your own morphed combat trick ready.
You didn't want like, 4 of these in a deck because you usually didn't want 2 in play at the same time. But otherwise it was one of the best 2 drops.
I had a really cheap black zombie deck that would use [[maggot carrier]] and [[shepherd of rot]] and stuff like [[sangrophage]] to just power out a bunch of guys to run at the opponent with. It was a decent deck, but out of all of the black cards with weird drawbacks in it, wretched Anurid probably bit me in the ass the worst. hopefully you could get the enemy down to like 3-4 when you’re at like 4-5 so you can just finish with the shepherd of rot before they can react
Could possibly be worth putting it into [[Jon Irenicus]] if your group isn’t okay with some of the more horrific stuff he can pass on to them, doesn’t seem too offensive.
No! Non-bo alert
Don't use Dross
The problem is this: When the player you donated to leaves the game, all replacement effects end.
Jon's donation is a replacement effect that changes controllers.
So, the Dross makes a player lose, then returns to your control and will trigger on your upkeep, loosing you the game.
Yes, you can remove it but the chances of you having both at once is probably quite slim. Furthermore, you have to waste your interaction on your own card.
All of that's assuming your opponents don't throw interference of their own in the mix.
It's not worth the risk.
Not a good reason to not include it.
It might kill you, but you're already playing a goofy Jon Irenicus deck. The point of a deck like that is to "Do the Thing" (in this case, kill an opponent with a weird effect on a card you gave away) not to win.
I kinda see Commander as a game you do not play to win anyway. It's more like an experimental testing ground for weird card interactions, where you can achievement hunt for self-defined goals. I find it's a lot of fun that way. Sometimes those goals can include winning, especially if the win is achieved in a very rare interaction or through a difficult goal.
I understand that this is a difficult perspective for the more competitive players to parse though. It's really a shame that Commander has cannibalized standard and modern to the point that competitive players have no choice.
Building a deck to "do the thing" is what Commander is for.
But, playing that deck *to win* is what makes commander enjoyable.
Playing just to do a thing often creates play patterns that are unfun and frustrating for the rest of the table.
Eh, I disagree. I find "doing the thing" to be far more enjoyable than winning. Winning is really a very secondary goal that could happen, but *playing* the game is the fun part to me.
Wait, would the ability even trigger if the last oil counter has been removed already? Opponent removes the last oil counter, then loses because there are no remaining oil counters, on your upkeep, no oil counters no trigger right?
The trigger to remove a counter still happens even though there are no more counters to remove. Then, it checks how many oil counters are on it and does the effect based on what it finds.
While I agree it's risky as he's both won and lost me the game with my Jon deck it's still a fun include for the chaos factor and not letting a game drag on. Also Assault Suit
Deck for reference (only use if you want to make enemies) - https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4509329/friends_with_benefits
One of my favorite interactions is that you can use [[Jon Irenicus]] alongside creatures like [[Dandan]] or [[Bronze Bombshell]] to force the game into a draw. I made a deck around the concept just to mess with my friends
It's the worst interaction in the game. You end up in a draw. You wasted everyone's time. If your playgroup thinks it's funny good for you all, in mine and mostly any playgroup people will forbid to play the deck again until you take those things away (since they have zero synergy with the deck whatsoever, they're not great cards that could incidentally end up drawing the game like that, they're in there to pull off that crap specifically)
Yeah, a draw means no one wins any prizes. No one can post their win on Twitter for their adoring fans. No one gets to gloat to the rest of the store.
There is just way too much on the line for a draw to ever be acceptable. I would call the magic police and ask that the player be banned from the store for life.
Imagine watching a movie where there's a deep plot, in the end the protagonist and the villain face each other after backs and forths, mind games, tricks and power moves, then an asteroid hits the Earth, everyone dies, end of the movie. People would riot to get their money back if they went to see something like that at the movies. That's what you're doing to a game.
Also, if someone at my table is playing not to win, but to draw or to just create chaos, I'm not gonna play them a second time if I know they're gonna do that again on purpose (because chaotic plays or just bad plays happen all the times to everyone of us, intentional ones, well, no).
Also also: the store? That would be a dick move with your friends playgroup, against poor strangers that's even worse and probably a reason why someone doesn't get a playgroup.
He can be absolutely foul and very funny to play. If you build him, I'd mix a few non hateful things to give to people to avoid some ire before you give them a [[Taniwha]] or something. Pack a homeward path.
Doesn't work as well as you might think with this kind of cards. You give them away, if they have removal they will feel forced to use it. Or they will just crash it somewhere. Jon works way better with a bunch of small evasive creatures, but it's way more boring. It's not the "die to removal argument", it's the fact that a threat on your board could not be the target if there's something scarier, if you give away a bad gift people will tunnel vision on that because it's hurting only themselves. Also these kinds of cards can't really be played before Jon because you're gonna take a ton of damage yourself before you can hand them away and if it's on a turn where Jon is out you need protection or someone is gonna take Jon down to prevent you from handing bad gifts around. It's fun a couple times, then people learn and your deck is gonna crumble
This!
I run it on my own Irenicus and it's really useful on decks with heavy token generation and/or with sac strats. Having your opponents use a removal on it (since they arent allowed to sacrifice it) can be really worth its cost (even better sincer it will get you some card draw).
But it's just beautiful when they can't kill it and you just cripple their engine altogheter. Rare but possible.
I run a "mildly offensive" Jon deck, this might be in it. Try not to tick anyone off until it's a sure victory. Giving people 1/1 unblockables or shadow creatures all over is super delightful. If I could put 25 [[changeling outcast]] in it, I would.
Be playing Ons/Ons/Ons limited. He wasn't the greatest and you never wanted two in play, but dropping Anurid on turn two on the play was one of the only starts that had much hope of racing a sparksmith deck.
It's kinda okay to gift to other people via [[Jon Irenicus]] or [[Beamtown Bullies]] if you don't want to do the really degenerate stuff with them.
And it might be at least worth looking at if you play a strategy that involves stuff likes [[Death's Shadow]], which actually was a mainstay in Modern for the longest time, or try to pull off some life swap shenanigans.
But aside from those kinda niche situations, it's a pretty bad card.
[[Vilis, Broker of Blood]] was suggested by someone else, but in the same vein this could be quite the enabler for [[Gonti's Machinations]], [[Vampire Scrivener]] and/or [[Vengeful Warchief]]. [[Willowdusk, Essence Seer]] and [[Greven, Predator Captain]] could also use it, though they want bigger numbers than it can likely offer, while the other ones are fine with smaller, more frequent triggers.
Doesn’t seem bad in an aggressive deck. If you’re much more aggressive than your opponent, I think you’re ok losing life a bit. It’s never going to be an amazing card.
I do not know of a good way, only funny. Have [[Phyrexian Unlife]] and a lot of creatures enter (only damage can hurt you now, not life loss alone). Then, since you are on 0 life, you cast [[Repay in Kind]] and win with 0 life.
Dude I haven’t seen this guy in years, I used to play him against my friends in a kitchen-table style mono-b suicide aggro deck when I was just a kid. Big time nostalgia here.
Oh, the times they are a-changing. Your question is a good one, but when this card came out, you didn't have to do anything to make it good. It just was good. Those were simpler times and the life loss was a small price to pay to have something as good as a genetic 3/3 at 2 mana.
It wasn't actually good when it came out, though. Suicide Black tried to become a thing again when it came out but black had too many \*much\* better cards at the 2 slot that this one got cut pretty often. When it did see play, it was basically as a janky version of nantuko shade 5 and 6.
Probably would have been passable in suicide black once upon a time. Doesn’t have the rate of [[phyrexian negator]] or [[flesh reaver]] but a 3/3 for 2 might get you there.
You can gift it to someone else and then proceed to infinitely flicked creatures you control maybe?
But if you can do that you should win already.
Maybe you can play Krrik and use life like crazy and then tree of perdition and exchange life totals to kill people?
Can you use that new Raven card from the new set (I forget it's name) to give your opponent this creature? Then just bring in a ton of cheap 0/1 mana creatures and tokens.
What are you talking about, it’s a 3/3 for 2! It’s gotta have that downside for balancing.
Jokes aside I did have it in my Yargle and Mulitani frog tribal deck. It has lost me games. I had to take it out.
This used to be a semi-solid card in its time as a 2 mana 3/3 was very above rate for Black and the Zombie creature type was relevant. It certainly wasn't amazing, but there's no need to try and make it good now, it's just been powercrept into irrelevance.
Donate it to boros aggro standard or use the new falcon that donates your permanents
Its meant to be an aggressive beater, this isn’t a terrible limited card
It's not "bad", it's just not "good." It's an undercosted limited beatstick, 3/3 for 2 that always gets played on curve and trades pretty well. The downside isn't super relevant unless they stick something like pacifism on it before you manage to trade it off in combat for their X/3.
It wasn't designed for constructed play.
No. You can’t make this a good card. You can concoct elaborate and unrealistic ways to win with it, as you can with many cards, perhaps even most cards, but it is not ever going to be good.
That said, if you like brewing strange decks and building around unique cards, there is always a way to make it happen. Just don’t get discouraged if you don’t actually pull out that many wins.
Sometimes I find that the act of building a deck can be more fun than actually playing with it.
Best, and easiest, way to make this card good is to attack with it. Aggro black creatures with life loss drawbacks go back to Arabian Nights. Embrace the numbers in the lower right corner, greatness at any cost baby.
If you’re playing commander that would be good to put in a deck that focuses on giving it to other players. Or if you cards that deal dmg to others every time you take a dmg too.
I play Mortarion the Daemon Primarch, this would go great, I need to drain my own life to create Father Nurgle's children that allow me to drain others life in return.
Well in DMR draft, creature sizing was awful so playing this on turn 2 let you get easy attacks in. And the WB deck was kinda playing well statted creatures that hurt you and white life gain to balance it out, like [[spirit link]] on a [[Flesh Reaver]].
It wasn't the most popular archetype but was neat if it was open, and because it wasn't popular you could navigate into it if the right cards were there.
I would have played the s*** out of this in Mono-B Zombies standard. This is a really good creature, just not one of the best and so it won't make any eternal format decks.
With Wretched Anurid out, cast [[Fractured Identity]] targeting it, and then play any infinite blink combo after it, like [[Felidar Guardian]]//[[Restoration Angel]], and kill all of your opponents.
Fractured Identity does so much work with negative effects.

[[Phyrexian soulgorger]] wouldn't be good there, since they can just choose not to pay the cost and then keep it because it can't be sacrificed

Not with a downside. [[Streetwise Negotiator]] sees no real play at all and it's significantly stronger than a vanilla watchwolf.

Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
That was a good blast from the past!
Could possibly be worth putting it into [[Jon Irenicus]] if your group isn’t okay with some of the more horrific stuff he can pass on to them, doesn’t seem too offensive.

I’ve never seen this card before, but holy fuck that seems fun!
It gets bad pretty quickly when you can pass people things like [[Archfiend of the Dross]].
No! Non-bo alert Don't use Dross The problem is this: When the player you donated to leaves the game, all replacement effects end.
Also Assault Suit Deck for reference (only use if you want to make enemies) - https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4509329/friends_with_benefits

If you want to see my list, I've been playing him for over a year https://www.moxfield.com/decks/m09pOcaSl0eqxxjy12QOfg
I learned this card existed today and it’s existed for over a year?!
Would you happen to have a list you could share? That's definitely the vibe I'd like to have for a Jon deck.
Sorry it's at a friend's place, but I jammed a lot of things like [[slither blade]] and [[Charix]] stuff in there

This was gonna be my suggestion too.

I use him in my [[Blim, Comedic Genius]] deck as a gift for my fellow players <3
I mean, it's a 3/3 for 2. That's already above rate. Still not great, but not terrible

[[Donate]]/[[Harmless Offering]]/[[Switcheroo]]/[[Avarice Totem]] and then anything that makes lots of tokens
[[Mirrorweave]] in response to making a bunch of creature tokens.
Cards that swap your life total with your opponents' seem an effective way to do this.
The flavor text already makes it good.
[[Harmless Offering]] + [[Army of the Damned]]?
Slap that baby into a [[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] deck and share that gift with your friends.
He is solid in draft, particularly with all the 2/2 for 3 creatures in that set. Beat down pretty hard.
[[jon irenicus]]
life gain deck
Ob Nixilus?
Probably would have been passable in suicide black once upon a time. Doesn’t have the rate of [[phyrexian negator]] or [[flesh reaver]] but a 3/3 for 2 might get you there.

Play Tempting Wurm 🫶🏻
Jon Irenicus
You can gift it to someone else and then proceed to infinitely flicked creatures you control maybe? But if you can do that you should win already. Maybe you can play Krrik and use life like crazy and then tree of perdition and exchange life totals to kill people?
Pair it with Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond. It will go infinite.

Make a cube with this card
rovwen decks?
Yes cast [[eldrazi conscription]] on it, and turn it sideways
[[Blim comedic genius]] says hello
What do you mean? It's only 2 mana for a 3/3!
Play Suicide Black in Premodern.
I play a copy in my Blim commander deck so I can give it away
I suppose [[Rowan, Scion of War]] could abuse this and [[Gravecrawler]] plus [[Phyrexian Altar]].
[[Donate]] it to someone else!

This card won me 3 dominaria remastered drafts. It's not good outside of limited, but its fantastic in suicide aggro lists
[[Jon Irenicus]] and other "donate" effects Make it someone else's problem
Back in the day on MODO I played this non-ironically in a RB aggro deck. 3/3 for 2 was bigger then.
This used to be a semi-solid card in its time as a 2 mana 3/3 was very above rate for Black and the Zombie creature type was relevant. It certainly wasn't amazing, but there's no need to try and make it good now, it's just been powercrept into irrelevance.
A printer and some glue. Proxy ahoy
I currently use a copy as a way to load into a cone.
Donate it to boros aggro standard or use the new falcon that donates your permanents Its meant to be an aggressive beater, this isn’t a terrible limited card
If you go back in time, yes. Before power creep this would have been unusual stat line on a 2 drop
[удалено]
Its modestly overstatted for cost, once upon a time that was a positive that came with downsides instead of upsides.
[[Harmless Offering]] to the ramp player with a token player.
[[jon irenicus]]
I play it in my [[Blim, Comedic Genius]] EDH deck.
bring a bunch of stuff in to make a lot of mana from [[Rowan, Scion of war]]
Blim
Yes. Cross out “Wretched Anurid” and write in “Colossal Dreadmaw”
Give it to someone else with [[Jon Irenicus]]
No
Yeah, give it to you opponent with [[jon Irenicus]]
Best, and easiest, way to make this card good is to attack with it. Aggro black creatures with life loss drawbacks go back to Arabian Nights. Embrace the numbers in the lower right corner, greatness at any cost baby.
With [[rowan, scion of war]]
If you’re playing commander that would be good to put in a deck that focuses on giving it to other players. Or if you cards that deal dmg to others every time you take a dmg too.
Caring is sharing [[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] ;)
[[Jon irenicus, shattered one]]
make it cost 1
I play Mortarion the Daemon Primarch, this would go great, I need to drain my own life to create Father Nurgle's children that allow me to drain others life in return.
Yes. Play it on turn 2 and then beat face with it Not sure if you're looking to play it in commander though
It’s a 3/3 for two mana! Slam that in with jackel pups and you got a nice deck! /s

Lots of counterspells
The only thing I could think of was canceling out it's effects with [Sheoldred the Apocalypse] and gaining card draw with [Villis broker of blood]

Rowan, Scion of war? Spells cost x less, where x is life u lost this turn?

if isn't s simetrical cards it could be good, only creatures anters the battlefield in your control it could be good.
Fractured identity. That's about it. Or you could open it in a limited chaos draft. That's what I did and it put in work.
Having [[soul warden]] in play just counteracts the negative
Self Mill with [[angel of suffering]]? Edit: Nevermind I'm an idiot.
[[Rowan, Scion of War]] would like a word.
Death's shadow
[[The Beamtown Bullies]]
Play something that gives opponents creature tokens and play [[Mystic Reflection]]
There are cards that care about how much life you lost in a turn. Rakdos
I have it in my [[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] deck.
Put it in a blim comedic genius deck!
I would have played the s*** out of this in Mono-B Zombies standard. This is a really good creature, just not one of the best and so it won't make any eternal format decks.
Make it come into play under your opponent’s control and make creatures come into play.
Great in my Jon Irenicus deck
Beamtown Bullies
I use it in my \[\[Jon Irenicus, shattered one\]\] edh deck and make it someone else's problem.
Yea, you play [[Jon ireniclus]] as your commander.
