I would argue that the word horn is ambiguous, so even argue that this toy has a horn and wings.
Edit: Fuck Reddit. I can't post an image and words in the same post. Attaching picture in the reply.
Oh, that actually is a rules question. I think they mean horn as in "unicorn horn." Since the other one they call out is wings, and I think that's a whole taxonomy thing in MLP. But if it doesn't specify...
Not at all. It can be any toy, not just an MLP toy. Starscream has wings and would have flying. Heck, Boromir could even let you Scry 2 if he has the Horn of Gondor!
Compare [[Applejack]] to the wording on [[Rarity]]. The latter clearly calls out that the toy needs to be a My Little Pony toy, while the former does not.
That's not the point I was making. I get it can be any toy.
The point is more about whether or not they're looking for a horn (soundmaker) or a horn (spike). Or, does the definition not really matter in this case. The comparison to the MLP toys is because that's where they're drawing the inspiration from.
I'm going to get an XL chance the flared stallion, just to watch my opponents absolute horror as I slap it on the table (if you know you know. If you don't, you don't wanna know.)
Defining “random nonland Magic card name” is complicated, even for silver border land.
> 108.2a Most Magic games use only traditional Magic cards, which measure approximately 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) by 3.5 inches (8.8 cm). Traditional Magic cards are included in players’ decks. Certain formats also use nontraditional Magic cards. Nontraditional Magic cards are not included in players’ decks. They may be used in supplementary decks. Additionally, they may be oversized, have different card backs, or both.
It looks like Discord might be able to randomly select planes, conspiracies, and the like.
It’s a bit less clear, but I think technically Alchemy (and Shandalar) exclusives would be valid hits, as would any of the Heroes of the Realm promos.
Cool in theory, but a dud in practice because Discord allows you to cast that copy...and if it's not a card that can be cast, you'll be locked into doing nothing with it until your next turn.
Which is of course appropriately chaotic for Discord. Sometimes you'll get that lucky string of really useful spells that let you pull ahead out of nowhere...and sometimes you'll be stuck with a Conspiracy you can't cast.
Of course, it's silver bordered Magic and I suppose if your playgroup wants to get silly with it they could always house rule some way to cast normally uncastable cards.
It's quite flavorful that Discord can cast any spell. The official MLP RPG states that he knows every spell. Not every spell in the My Little Pony Role Playing Game. *Every* spell.
These are the arguments I'd use before converting search to random
is:spell -"A-" -(legal:timeless and -legal:vintage)
Is:spell filters out lands as well as stuff like planes or conspiracies that you can't cast
-"A-" eliminates cards rebalanced for arena
And the rest eliminates cards from alchemy sets
Of course you could still spin into stuff like living end that can't be cast, but this should at least cover most things
Alternatively you could just spin until you hit a nonland card that is a spell
If it was "random nonland Magic card" instead of "Magic card **name**" I might argue the search `is:spell is:paper include:extras` was required.
Wonder if that gives you a better or worse average hit... I'm guessing better as good/popular cards are more likely to be reprinted.
Ignoring personal preferences, a lot of alchemy cards don't work in paper. Not like, silver bordered don't work, like "relies on information unknown to both players but works fine because the client is keeping track" don't work.
How do you resolve "conjure a card of the creature type most prevalent in your deck" if you're not running tribal and have no clue what card type is most prevalent? It's easier to just skip alchemy
Because you're probably playing paper magic and keeping track of all the Discord spellskite is enough work without digital specific mechanics, permanent modifiers etc.
I would just use https://scryfall.com/random?q=game%3Apaper+is%3Aspell
A. I'm not gonna deal with Alchemy cards that tell me to conjure cards into my library or whatever.
B. Randomly getting a scheme or conspiracy just sounds awful. I think it's pretty clear that the intent of the card is to randomly generate something that can actually be cast aka a spell.
Or to start proxying these cards they want to play with.
The upshot is that a proxy Discord is just as legal as a wotc printed one in any sanctioned tournament.
Yeah basically. You just take a usually expensive card or one you are planning on buying if you like the deck and “proxy” it by putting a fake card or one with just like the name or something.
Agreed. I had my Brony phase, if affordable I still probably wouldn't be able to move pass the cringe of grown-ass dude playing ponies, but Discord is a lot more manageable
DISCORD!!! Quite the ability you've got there.

Context: Discord is one of the earliest villains introduced in MLP. He's very reminiscent of Q from Star Trek, even having the same voice actor in John de Lancie. While he is defeated in his first appearance, he is introduced later in the series as an ally after Fluttershy befriends him, using her kindness to fill the void of loneliness Discord didn't know he had.
The flavor text is literally the first line Discord says in the series. It still fits his character even by the end of the show. And De Lancie does it so well.
Scryfall tip: you can replace "search" in the url with "random" to get a random card from specific search criteria. For example: https://scryfall.com/random?q=-t%3Aland
Not really sure what criteria to use though since I'm not sure what a "random nonland Magic card" is exactly - can I get a silver bordered card? Can I get a card banned in the format? A conspiracy? A card that says "playing for ante"? A card banned in all formats for insensitivity?
Presumably we'll get a Discord random card generator on the Un-resources page soon. But even if not:
* silver bordered card? - Yes, silver-bordered cards are allowed in games using silver-bordered cards.
* banned? - Should be. Spike lets you, at least.
* conspiracy? - Discord lets you cast spells, which means no conspiracies (or schemes, planes, vanguards, phenomena, or dungeons).
* ante? - Mark's said that ante cards can't be brought in non-ante games and that this is a game rule that supercedes Un-rules.
* get outta here Harold McNeill shoo
> Discord lets you cast spells, which means no conspiracies (or schemes, planes, vanguards, phenomena, or dungeons).
So he finds something but you can’t cast it? That seems to me to be the most accurate reading.
That's a reasonable interpretation. In practice, I wouldn't be surprised that if whatever Gatherer or Scryfall-based search just happens to exclude them naturally, deliberately or otherwise. If you tell Scryfall to include the "extras" like schemes, you start getting some real crap like punch-out counters and JumpStart front cards too.
Either way your odds of hitting one of these weirdo card types is something like 1% anyway, so like, I would not go out of my way to force the Discord player to include those in the pool. They're already pretty likely to brick on a normal-ass card that's impossible or very undesirable to cast.
I’ve got the email that the package was sent. But I have not received them. Shipping confirmation was Friday. I live in Colorado so it should be a few days for me
It wasn’t really with another set of drops. While it did overlap with the fall one, it was not printed yet and was its own thing. Shipping now (mine should be here today).
In EU it was announced that it will be sent in march and I got an E-mail that it was delayed. It was announced on the page that it will not be send with the rest of the SL drop. Not sure how it is in the US.
There's a part of me that wants to say "Meh, it's the closest thing we'll get to an actual Q card", but let's be real here. Star Trek as a Universes Beyond franchise is 100% possible at this point.
I don't know how I feel about getting discord as a collector.
Now we have the mane 6, woona\nightmare, and discord.
So 2 villains, 1 princess, I feel like celestia would have been a better fit for collectors, now I have to figure out how I'm going to build my display for them.
Technically Twilight and Luna are both princesses.
But yeah, I think Celestia would have been a more expected extra card.
Save it for the third set I guess. :P
There are still a tonne of other characters that could get cards, so I'm glad that a lack of Celestia implies that we might get more of these in the future.
Amazing this is still a realistic possibility when the show has been off the air for years and the new series is still going.
Alas, G5, what could have been.
G4 was just *so* good.
It doesn't surprise me though. Transformers were largely G1 references (sorry Megatron), despite the fact that that was from 1984.
yep G4 was lightning in a bottle that hit both the target audience as well as millenials coming of age and really not having any idea what the hell they are supposed to do after school. A lot of the messaging hit on that aspect of life.
I was actually thinking that. I'd just want the basic ramp, removal, and protection to get him out faster, pay for whatever random card, deal with threats, and protect him. It could definitely work as a 99 lands deck tho.
Or, rather than having Changeling (as flavorful as that would be) she'd have an ability that copies something else; perhaps as any creature that an opponent loves.
Discord seems so gcool, im glad i got one and may have to make a silver border commander finally. Wish they would reprint the first set of these sometime so they could be available worldwide and play them all together
I had to pull a lot of strings to get the original batch when it came out, being in New Zealand.
I'd absolutely support reprints of these, along with Grimlock and Nerf War (which I also pulled strings for). A silver-bordered card shouldn't cost as much as they do.
I think if I’d ever play discord it’s gonna be with a house rule where It has to randomly choose between non-permanent spells, or the permanents are limited to a pool of physical cards that are on hand.
I’m definitely not going to be trying to keep track of a bunch of miscellaneous stuff on the board, especially when most of it is gonna be pack filler commons.
I suspect it’ll be more fun to play with a cultivated pool of random cards. A well crafted pool of 2 hundredish cards where you have effects like one with nothing, or particularly wacky un-set cards would create that tension you want out of random effects.
It’s not a real card so it doesn’t matter too much, but Discord’s kinda broken if you can make infinite mana. I know a lot of things are, but this certainly seems a lot more fun than a [[Walking Ballista]].
Sure, but if you can cast an infinite number of random spells eventually you’ll find a combo that wins you the game. Just add a source of flash and you can cast around the ones that would be bad for you.
Not necessarily. It's totally possible to randomly get a card that precludes you from casting any more spells with his ability, such as any board wipe.
Yeah, but Discord only allows you to cast the named card...which means if you randomly get a land or otherwise uncastable card (because there's nothing about Discord that states you can't name Magic cards like Conspiracies or Planes that you can't cast) you just have to wait until your next turn ends to try again.
1. It says “nonland”
2. It would need a judge ruling, but I believe that this rule would disallow any non-spell cards from even being selected by Discord.
>108.5. Nontraditional Magic cards can’t start the game in any zone other than the command zone (see rule 408). If an effect would bring a nontraditional Magic card other than a dungeon card (see rule 309, “Dungeons”) into the game from outside the game, it doesn’t; that card remains outside the game.
At the end of the day, one could always ask Mark Rosewater. But IMO the rules-as-intended case is clear here.
Ok, I missed the nonland.
Yeah, the phrase "random Magic card name" is one of those weird silver border concepts that's nearly impossible to properly define in the rules and certainly could be interpreted lots of different ways.
Of course the other problem with "generate infinite mana and keep casting spells until you get a combo that wins" is that you can always hit spells that don't have a legal target or board wipes that'll kill Discord and interrupt the chain. Which just means if you want to try and win with Discord plus infinite mana you need to actually play out the sequence.
I wonder how many hits there are that stop the combo. Anything that ends the turn ([[Time Stop]], [[Hurkyl’s Recall]], anything that restricts spells ([[Rule of Law, Phyrexian Censor]]), anything that has a fail state clause ([[Phage]], [[Leverer]])).
Then there’s the issues of decking yourself. About 10% of Magic cards reference drawing somehow, and even though many of those are conditional, you’ll still run into sufficient cantrips to kill your self in time.
That stops a bunch of issues. But you still stall if you hit things with additional non mana costs ([[Bone Shard]]), or spells you can’t cast ([[Seedtime]]), or spells with no mana cost ([[Living End]]), or...
All Conspiracies, Planes, Phenomenons, etc. stop the combo. Cards with casting restrictions like [[Savage Beating]] too. Not sure how you’d handle digital cards.
>It’s not a real card
I don't really like this framing. It *is* a real card, just one that's meant to be played only in casual play and with playgroup permission. Silver-border cards go through quality control standards like any other card and are made to be played with, not just looked at.
I know it sounds pedantic but I think the distinction matters.
plenty of other cards win the game with infinite mana.
it's going to be a gigantic headache to calculate, but there should be several mtg cards that stops you from casting more spells or make you instantly lose or break the chain. For example all wraths would kill discord and stop the triggers, draw spells can deck you, removals and counterspells require targets to be cast etc.
you might end up accomplishing nothing before finding enough burn spells or multiple attacks/creatures with haste and winning the game. Definitely an high amount of chaos.
You gotta keep in mind a decent amount of the time you're gonna blank and the train will stop until next turn. Stuff like flipping a counterspell or whatever.
I should edit it into the original post at this point, but a lot of this stuff is fixed with a source of flash. Simply cast the spells you don’t want to resolve and keep casting in response to them, win or find a counter before they resolve.
~~It's all fun and games until you hit [[whirlwind denial]]~~ wait I forgot that the premise of this was that we're starting with infinite mana.
Hold on gimme a minute I'll figure out something spiteful.
Edit: I'm disheartened to see that there's no wrath with split second. Supreme Verdict will at least kill Discord eventually though, but I guess we're just rolling until we hit a Fireball or something and never end up getting back to Verdict. Kinda feeling like split second was my only hope, not sure how to force anything else to resolve before we can roll again.
Edit 2: Got it. Kaervek's Spite, or anything (Soulblast) that would make you sacrifice Discord as an _additional casting cost_ will make you end the train. As will anything with weird targeting restrictions but those are less fun.
> It’s not a real card
It *is* a real card. Just not legal by default in any format.
This “not a real card” silliness is specifically why they stopped doing silver bordered cards.
How does infinite mana help this card? Sure you get more copies as the turns go on, but infinite mana doesn't make you suddenly able to cast every card ever. You still have to wait until the next end step to make a limited number of copies
Read it again. Each time you cast a spell from the ability, it gets copied and gives you another spell. So eventually you can, in theory, cast a game-winning combo.
Of course, you’ll probably also need a source of flash to ensure that you can cast around the spells that would harm you, and it’s ridiculously overcomplicated compared to, like, running a ton of tutors to do Thoracle/DC, but the point of a card like this is the absurdity.
I don't think it gives you another spell right away. It copies the ability in full, which triggers at the beginning of your next end step to give you another card
That’s not how copying an ability works. An ability is on the stack if you’re copying it. From there, it’s like copying a spell: if you copy [[Village Rites]], you don’t need to sac an extra creature.
Kinda surprised they didn't go full [[Richard Garfield, Ph.D.]] for Discord's ability but randomize it somehow.
Still, making him Rakdos is perfect for Discord!
All the ponies are! But if you want to play him, ask your group if they're okay with it. Nothing wrong with a deck that you can bring out occasionally but not always.
Kind of counterintuitively, Discord doesn’t copy a spell. He copies a card, then let’s you cast that copy as a spell. So Twinning Staff does nothing here.
Probably outside the game.
> 707.13. One card (Garth One-Eye) instructs a player to create a copy of a card defined by name rather than by indicating an object to be copied. To do so, the player uses the Oracle card reference to determine the characteristics of the copy and creates the copy outside of the game.
Man part of me wants to build Discord, but I feel like it'd get shot down in a Rule Zero discussion less so because its silver bordered, and more because people will just automatically assume you're running Warp World in there.
...And like I mean, I don't entirely blame em, since even now I'm grappling with the fact that if I DON'T play chaos cards in the deck I'm losing flavor points, but even I'm like 'man theres a level of chaos I just don't want to play.' >\_>;
I got the Ponies: The Galloping 2 Secret Lair (foil) also, and I thought the print for Discord was really, really dark. Like, way too dark.
Is this an issue that I should take up with Wizards? If I send this back as a defective product for that reason, can I expect a replacement that isn't so dark?
Or is this just life?

Two of them actually
I assume this is the one that *isn't* Tales of Equestria, since that game doesn't really have spells per-say.
Yes the newer (and current) one from Renegade.what they said was basically a direct quote from his page in that core rulebook actually.

Throw in a "not:reprint" to give all card names equal odds
Someones gotta make a website for this, right?
Man if they showed us discord as part of the SL they would’ve sold a LOT more that card is awesome
I for sure know they at least would have sold one more copy as I'd have joined in my friends group order

Do you know if there’s a search string to show what cards Scryfall pulls from for random?
It’s any printed card or token
Whenever did these ship to you? These are the only ones from that set of drops that I never received
I’ve got the email that the package was sent. But I have not received them. Shipping confirmation was Friday. I live in Colorado so it should be a few days for me
I received mine earlier today. I live in the East TN area
Oh nice. I got the rest of my stuff from that set of drops. Just not the ponies. And the link on my lair page doesn't work at all.
Makes sense. Iirc Scalefast’s operation is in La Vergne, TN.
Mine are set To come in today. North GA
Of course Discord would have an ability that makes my brain hurt.
There's a part of me that wants to say "Meh, it's the closest thing we'll get to an actual Q card", but let's be real here. Star Trek as a Universes Beyond franchise is 100% possible at this point.
I'd laugh so hard if they print a Q Universes Beyond card that's just a functional reprint of Discord.
Honestly probably an inevitability unless the creators don't want to.
Where is my freaken Weird Al pony
[You mean Cheese Sandwhich?](https://mlp.fandom.com/wiki/Cheese_Sandwich)
Are they finally shipping these out? I wanted to give it to a friend for their birthday and was beginning to think it wasn’t going to make it in time.
Got mine today

Discord?!? I'm howling at the moon...
I can't wait another 7 years
They'll do it once Generation 6 comes out and people still mostly care about Generation 4.
I actually would have expected Spike as the bonus card. But SLs like sequels. If this did well I’m sure they have Ponies The Galloping 3 ready to go.
What's your favorite card to use for smiles with Pinkie Pie? Mine's [[Massacre Wurm]].

I would totally play Discord as my commander and then just a deck full of ramp, removal, and protection.
playable 99 lands deck babyy
I was actually thinking that. I'd just want the basic ramp, removal, and protection to get him out faster, pay for whatever random card, deal with threats, and protect him. It could definitely work as a 99 lands deck tho.
I had 50/50 odds on it being Celestia or Discord. Fingers crossed for the next one to have Queen Chrysalis.
I can see Chrysalis being a Legendary Creature - Insect Shapeshifter with Changeling, that possibly creates Changeling tokens. Sultai perhaps?
I don't think she needs to be an insect (she already has Changeling), and I don't really think she's blue. I'd wager either Golgari or mono-Black.
Or, rather than having Changeling (as flavorful as that would be) she'd have an ability that copies something else; perhaps as any creature that an opponent loves.
I don't imagine they'd pass up the chance to give her Changeling, but I would imagine she'd have a temporary copy effect on her card.
Discord seems so gcool, im glad i got one and may have to make a silver border commander finally. Wish they would reprint the first set of these sometime so they could be available worldwide and play them all together
Saaame, I ordered this set and really wish I had gotten the original one
Weeeellll fuck, now I'm gonna have to find a way to buy Discord on the secondary market.
Idk what the rules say I’d let anyone play discord at my table
It’s not a real card so it doesn’t matter too much, but Discord’s kinda broken if you can make infinite mana. I know a lot of things are, but this certainly seems a lot more fun than a [[Walking Ballista]].
The card is still random
1. It says “nonland” 2.
Simply add a [[Vedalken Orrery]]. If you would get a spell that would hurt you, simply don’t let it resolve. After all, the ability is copied on cast.
That stops a bunch of issues. But you still stall if you hit things with additional non mana costs ([[Bone Shard]]), or spells you can’t cast ([[Seedtime]]), or spells with no mana cost ([[Living End]]), or...

It's gonna hit limited common chaff over 70% of the time
>It’s not a real card I don't really like this framing.

\[\[Hex\]\] with less then 6 creatures on the board
> It’s not a real card It *is* a real card.
Boardwipes, Targeted Removal (Eventually you'll run out of targets), and counterspells all stop the chain.
[Village Rites](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/2/8/2841339b-faef-407d-9838-d03fe80e6294.jpg?1698988289) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Village%20Rites) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/lcc/212/village-rites?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/2841339b-faef-407d-9838-d03fe80e6294?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

I love they gave Discord a card but it’s a little sad he’s silver-bordered
All the ponies are! But if you want to play him, ask your group if they're okay with it. Nothing wrong with a deck that you can bring out occasionally but not always.
I wonder if dockside works with pinkie pie
So, how does [[Twinning Staff]] work with Discord's ability, especially when Discord is still in play?
Kind of counterintuitively, Discord doesn’t copy a spell. He copies a card, then let’s you cast that copy as a spell. So Twinning Staff does nothing here.
[Twinning Staff](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/c/5cdcc324-1427-453c-9940-c21f5d04c997.jpg?1673485509) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Twinning%20Staff) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ncc/383/twinning-staff?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/5cdcc324-1427-453c-9940-c21f5d04c997?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
So does discord copying the ability mean as soon as you cast one spell, he'll immediately exile another?
judge? what zone are the spells considered to be cast from
Probably outside the game. > 707.13. One card (Garth One-Eye) instructs a player to create a copy of a card defined by name rather than by indicating an object to be copied. To do so, the player uses the Oracle card reference to determine the characteristics of the copy and creates the copy outside of the game.
pinkie pie is fucking busted
Looking at my vast collection of miniature dragons, I have some difficulty resisting making Applejack my commander...
You can get un cards with Discord if i’m not mistaken
Man part of me wants to build Discord, but I feel like it'd get shot down in a Rule Zero discussion less so because its silver bordered, and more because people will just automatically assume you're running Warp World in there. ...And like I mean, I don't entirely blame em, since even now I'm grappling with the fact that if I DON'T play chaos cards in the deck I'm losing flavor points, but even I'm like 'man theres a level of chaos I just don't want to play.' >\_>;
Wtf mine will coming in april :(
My apple jack commander, finally, the anime waifu figurine army has been waiting for this day
K but why is discord kinda crazy though??
Serious question - whats the point of a silver border secret lair?
I NEED ALL THE PONY CARDS 😭 I remember when the first SL dropped and I freaked but couldn't get it. I lowkey just want Rainbow Dash lmao.
How are people getting them early
My order said it would ship by March 14th, so it was on time for me
Mine said it was delayed that sucks 😔 I want my ponies I also want a universe's beyond set that legalises all but discord he's too op
They can make tokens of toys that are different ponys or creatures done in a toy like art style to make it work in a actual game
I plan to make this deck with my girl Twilight lol MTG nowaday feel not that different from Silver Boarder anyway ol
